    Simple Questions - March 22, 2020

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 05:12 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

What do you think of my $520 Budget 1080p Gaming PC?

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 08:01 AM PDT

A friend of mine has been wanting to get into PC gaming but doesn't have much funds so tasked with a ~$500 limit I set out to try and build something with a combination of used/new parts and this is what I came up with.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/QsrVb8 PCPartPicker Part List

    Type Item Price
    Memory Team T-FORCE VULCAN Z 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory Purchased For $69.98
Storage Silicon Power A55 512 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive Purchased For $61.99
Case NZXT H510 ATX Mid Tower Case Purchased For $69.98
Case Fan ARCTIC P12 PWM PST CO 56.3 CFM 120 mm Fan Purchased For $8.60
Case Fan ARCTIC P12 PWM PST CO 56.3 CFM 120 mm Fan Purchased For $8.60

Custom A-Power AK 680W (Walmart Clearance) Purchased For $32.95
Custom MSI Radeon RX 480 4 GB GAMING X Video Card (Used hardware swap) Purchased For $108.00
Custom AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF (12nm) (hardware swap NEW IN BOX) Purchased For $80.00
Custom Gigabyte B450M DS3H Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard (hardware swap NEW IN BOX) Purchased For $72.00
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
    Total $520.59
    Generated by PCPartPicker 2020-03-22 02:17 EDT-0400

I knew I wanted to start with the Ryzen 1600AF because it can be easily overclocked and perform at a 2600 level. I don't have much experience with AMD gpu's but it seemed the RX 480 was roughly equivalent to a 1060 and should be a decent 1080p card for the price.

Could have went a little cheaper on the case and saved $30 but this one comes with 2 fans so really $14 ($16 less in fans to buy) and has really nice cable management and a super clean look.

Edit: General consensus is that the PSU is not worth the risk so it will be the first thing to be replaced.

Edit2: Okay replaced the PSU with the corsair one I was originally going to get. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ CORSAIR CV Series, CV550, 550 Watt, 80+ Bronze Certified, now I'll need to figure out if I can return the original.

Edit3: grabbed the wrong link: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/YQzfDx

This being my first attempt at a super budget build there seems to be a couple things I could have done based off replies to save some money and potentially upgrade the graphics card.

    1. The H10 case was designed to work with negative pressure. So the 2 fans it comes with are more than enough for this build. I could have saved $24 by not purchasing extra fans/hub and instead just a simple splitter for the 2 case fans.
    2. Original PSU I grabbed is not worth the risk. I did in fact buy an better alternative and updated the build.
    3. Potentially could have gotten a better gpu but it was part of a package deal with the cpu/mobo.

All in all, $500 was my budget and I did got over a small amount. There's lot of things I could have upgraded for an additional $5-10 here and there but that just pushes it even further outside my budget.

Thanks everyone for all the info!

    Switching from Intel to Ryzen.

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 04:43 AM PDT

Just wanted to ask. I'm going to be upgrading from intel to ryzen and wondered when switching mobo.

How do i remove the drivers that are associated with intel and how can i transfer my current windows 10 from my current mobo to the new mobo?

Also anything else i need to be aware of before doing my upgrade?

    Thanks!

After 4 months of roaming this sub I'm about to start.

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 03:49 PM PDT

For my 14th birthday I decided to use up all my savings to build my first gaming pc. My parents chiped in of course but I was taking a huge risk. I want to thank this sub for helping me out with finding the parts that suited what I was looking for. Btw micro center is heaven. Wish me luck as I begin the build!

Upgraded my GPU. I think it actually hurt my performance. Help me figure out how/what else to upgrade.

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 10:56 AM PDT

Backstory: I hopped on the Modern Warfare Warzone train with some friends and was getting horrible performance. My setup is about 5 years old with no upgrades. I decided to impulsively buy a new GPU without upgrading anything else. Landed on the RTX 2060 Super. Any tips to help pinpoint what exactly is going wrong? I can still barely run the game on low settings and graphically it actually looks worse (images to follow). Here is the current setup. I don't want to go crazy budget wise, but willing to shell out like 500-800 to fix up the rest of the components.

    CPU: Intel i5 4460 3.20GHz

    GPU: Nvidia RTX 2060 Super
    MOBO: ASRock H97M Pro4

    RAM: Dual Channel DDR3 2x4GB

    PSU: EVGA 500W

^images showing horrible textures in the sky/ground on modern warfare, this was not happening with my old GPU (970 GTX) I made sure to update my drivers and restart PC and whatnot.

Please let me know if you need any other information/analytics as I'm a bit of a noob when it comes down to the nitty gritty of all this stuff. I appreciate any and all insight.

Is now a good time to buy PC parts?

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 01:00 PM PDT

I've been looking at a PC build for a while now, and I heard that PC part prices will surge due to the Coronavirus, so should I buy my PC parts ASAP?

The delivery time for the parts on Amazon currently is over a month. Should I be worried about this?

    ULRTA budget build (upgrade question)

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 07:40 AM PDT

    Yo,

    ATM I'm running an i5-3470 4c/4t, Dell 0T10XW mobo (1155 socket), x2 ddr3 8gb 1600mhz & a GTX 1050 2gb.

I've found a wicked deal on an i7 3770k, would my mobo handle it? I'll be getting a used RX580 8GB as well as upgrading my PSU.

My two games are CS:GO & COD:MW. I already get 150-250fps on CS:GO but on CODMW it struggles immensely, even on 720p.

Keep in mind, I'm from Australia.

    Cheers!

My goal was to upgrade to something I could edit 4K videos on and enjoy looking at every day. When Ryzen 2 came out I knew it was time. This thing chews through rendering faster than my 4790K could by several magnitudes. I couldn't scrub through my timeline in Vegas with it stuttering. 32 gigs of ram is going to become the new 16, I've more than utilized it in rendering and modded minecraft.

I kept my trusty GTX 1060 because it's good enough for what I play for now (it struggles at 1440p 144hz). I got the HD rgb fans from Corsair because both sides of the frames are clear, which means my intakes have RGB shining through. The cable extensions are from cablemod, and the fan grill is actually a custom piece from jmmods, I reached out to them regarding a grill that would match the X570 Taichi and Jeff over there delivered! I painted some of it silver so it popped against the fan.

Also not in the PCpartpicker list is my HDD, a 3TB WD blue. It's almost full from games and video files. I am in the process of converting my old rig into a NAS.

My audio setup is the Audioengine A5+, with a custom build 8" subwoofer hiding under the desk. I have my Sennheiser HD6XX w/Dekoni memory foam velour pads, and they both run through a O2 ODAC. Sooner or later I plan on upgrading to a balanced THX 789, but one paycheck at a time.

The workbench table was something I just made recently. I used to have my PC and printer on a coffee table, and that was getting cramped. I designed this in 3D and built it in a weekend. This gave me room to store all my filament, and more importantly, rotate my second display horizontally. I'm pretty sure this could support a few people at the very least, I overbuilt it on purpose. Should be handy until it rots. The printer is a Printrbot Smalls with a bunch of custom parts I made for it. Reliable little sucker.

Let me know what you think about it! This is my current endgame for now, although those SFF builds are looking mighty fine as of late.

TLDR; Built a cool setup, check out the pictures, I paid the dog tax gimme them updoots (plz)

    Linus Tech Tip’s PC

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 01:48 PM PDT

So this is gonna be my first time building a PC. I'm not very knowledgeable about computers and after looking around I found a Gaming PC that I like. It's a build by Linus and is running: AMD Athlon 3000G 3.5 GHz Dual-Core Processor, ASRock B450M-HDV R4.0, Patriot Viper 4 Blackout 8 GB (2 x 4 GB), Seagate FireCuda 1 TB internal Hard drive, Cougar MX330-G ATX Mid tower case, and Consair VS 450 W. It's under $300 (but I don't mind spending a little more for better results) which is nice. I play games (with GTA V) probably the most demanding but overall my goal is a well rounded PC for everything as I'm a college student. Sorry for the paragraph but my question is what do you guys think? I can use all the advice I can get and intend using a Dell monitor (P2213 22") and basic dell keyboard also.

Questions for building my first pc

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 01:14 PM PDT

Hi! As you read I'm building my first pc and I need help.

Information: I've got a few components already, a cpu (i5-6500), 8gb ram, 1tb sata Samsung ssd and a cpu cooler/heatsink.

All I need is the motherboard, gpu, power supply and case, and I'm planning on buying from ebay. (I'm on a tight budget) (I won't be buying a second hand power supply dw)

    1) Once I've gathered all the components, do I get the screws from the components or do I have to buy them separately.

    3 Questions Regarding Budget

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 09:54 AM PDT

    1. What is the minimum budget required for a pc, in order to play every game in the "High" preset?
    2. What is the minimum budget required to build a pc that is considered a "next gen console killer"? (PS5, XBOXSX)
    3. Is it possible to build a pc that, will not only handle current games, but will also play with ease "next gen games" ? And about how much will it cost ?

New PC Boots, but it won’t start to BIOS

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 02:28 PM PDT

So a while back I wrote about an issue where nothing on the PC happened when I pressed the power button. A lot of advice led me to try a new power supply, so I did. That didn't work either. I tried many things afterwards, but the only thing that seemed to do something was removing and reinstalling the CPU. All the fans spin, everything lights up, but when the pc connects to the monitor, it doesn't go into bios, it just shows a black screen. It doesn't show "No Signal" so it is giving something but it is just a black screen. It is just built, so there is no operating system. I will install windows 10 once the system will successfully post. I've tried a lot of things, including taking out the CMOS battery for 3+ hours and putting it back in, but I'm open for ideas

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I am building my first gaming pc and need to know if this build is good. Once I get the okay that it's good I will be purchasing all the parts. I have a 144hz monitor and might get another monitor as well. I'm trying to game and stream. My budget is 1500. Thank you!!

My first build on my own

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 02:11 PM PDT

Hey guys, so I need advice on buying the right things to build a PC and thought this would be the best place to ask. Here is what I'm thinking:

    AMD Ryzen 5 3600 CPU- $297.00

    Cooler Master CPU cooler- $74.50

    Gigabyte x570 motherboard- $329

    Kingston HyperX Fury x2 DDR4- $188

ASRock Radeon RX 5700 XT Video card- $749

    NZXT C 750 W Power supply- $224.94

Tell me if you'd swap out any parts for better things. I already have a few things but only need to replace my motherboard which inadvertently makes it that I have to swap almost everything. I want this PC to run all the games in my Steam library because right now I can't even run borderlands 1 without it freaking out! My budget is probably about $2000NZD. BTW if my suggestions are the worst you've ever seen just know that I have never done this on my own before and all my PC parts are passed on from my older brothers so I never had to think about it much.

    My PC keeps freezing

    My PC keeps freezing

I build my pc a bit over a couple years ago, and i haven't had any problems with it until recently. I was playing Dota with some friend and it randomly froze for no apparent reason, I couldn't do anything apart from just pressing the off button and restarting, but when I would restart, it would just freezes again after a while. I thought it might be that i was overclocking my CPU too much, but that didn't fix the problem. I tried to clean the dust out of it, but that didn't do anything either. I thought it might have been my GPU, but i don't overclock that at all. I'm kinda out of ideas, does anybody know a fix or op has anybody had a similar problem?

    My specs are:

    Ryzen 5 1600x

    MSI 1070

    8Gb of DDR4

    ASrock AB350M

    and a VS650 corsair PSU
