That time I learned almost every lesson people try to teach you about PC building...

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 07:44 PM PST

Decided I was unhappy about the idle noise of my mid range gaming PC, figured it was my dinky wraith stealth cooler that seems to run at higher RPM than everything else

Invest in midrange beefy tower cooler, wake up early on my day off to install it and try some light OC...

Until I start struggling with the AM4 bracket, keeping the stand offs and screws together, couldn't get the screws to thread "I don't understand why everyone loves this mounting solution, this is a pain in the ass..." until I realize the mounting plate on the back of the PC had come off, apparently after removing the stock cooler and I didn't realize..

"Ok well now I see this is easy and fast!"

Apply some thermal paste, slap on the cooler, struggle with the stupid fucking fan clips for 10 minutes but finally achieve victory. "Ok great! time to boot it up!"

Press power and the machine is still loud for just idling....."What the??? Ok let me check the CPU fan curves and optimize them etc"

Until I open the bios and realize one of my front 140 fans is plugged into the Pump header thats directly next to the Chassis 2 fan header....so it's been running at 100% for years.....How I didn't realize this super simple and common mistake I cannot tell you.

"😅 heh, Well, that was dumb , probably didn't need this new cpu cooler but whatever... I'll just check my mobo layout and reattach all the fans to chassis headers for proper control

..... Until I realize the Chassis 1 header is directly underneath this big new tower cooler and completely inaccessible without taking the new cooler off....

" heavy sigh well fuck.... Ok fine i'll just pop this off real quick, reapply the thermal paste and pop it back on, I don't even have to take off the fans since there's built in channels for the long screw driver!"

Unscrew everything until its loose but the heatsink is only barely wiggling, I give it a little twist back and forth waiting for it to release and pull gently and voila! CPU cooler comes off.....with the cpu still attached....

😲 ... "I just ripped the CPU out of the socket"....... fuck fuck fuck fuck

I frantically inspect all the pins and everything looks ok, my butthole relaxes and I carefully replace the cpu and lock it back down, clean off all the thermal paste

...Then I almost forget to connect the fan to the header I did all of this for in the first place... But I connect it, hide the cable, put on some thermal paste and go to plop the cooler down

...Except because I didn't take the fans off I can't see shit and im a good 50% off midline and can't get the screws anywhere near correct

So now curse myself again, take off the stupid fan clips, reclean and apply thermal paste, attach everything the normal way and let out a sigh of relief.

I struggle for another 20 minutes routing the other fan cables to keep them tidy but ultimately accomplish my goal, hopefully without destroying anything

So I plug everything back in AND............PC doesn't turn on now...

"Great, fantastic, I destroyed my system somehow because I'm an idiot...awesome..."

But then I realize I didn't switch the power switch in the back like a pro and everything works great. Idle noise is much lower but theres still something pretty noisy and I can't figure it out...

"what the fuck, I guess this is just what the quietest I can get this machine.... might as well start to look into some OCing..."

But then....while browsing the internet I hear a small click and my PC goes absolutely SILENT and it dawns on me......

"I have a small mechanical hybrid drive for cheap storage installed......could that noise have been the HDD spinning this entire time?????"

click on mechanical drive in explorer

Sure enough drive spins up and noise returns......FINALLY I FUCKING FOUND YOU YOU SON OF A BITCH!!!!

Needless to say I'll be swapping out that drive for an extra SSD I have lying around but this is the equivalent of scratching and itch you've had for years!

TL:DR Lessons I Painfully Learned Today

    1. Even for hardware adjustments you expect to be quick and easy, clear off a nice work area so you're not making and easy thing that much harder by having no work space

    2. Turns out the AM4 bracket on the back of the motherboard is very detachable

    3. If you're concerned about addressing noisy components, make sure you actually take the time to correctly isolate the offending piece...

    4. For your own sake, double and triple check that all your chassis fans are in the appropriate headers while you have your CPU cooler off, save yourself a hastle

    5. Ripping out your CPU from the socket with the cooler is an actual thing and not just something people tell you like "wear a static reducing bracelet"

    6. If your computer isn't even turning on, it's probably the power switch or something with power delivery in general

    7. If you can't figure out whats make that noise.... do you have non-solid state storage? If so could be your drive!

UPDATE I somehow bricked my installation of windows in the process of dialing in a 4.2 ghz overclock on my Ryzen 2600, started getting some funky errors and then rapidly progressed to a boot loop. I cleared my CMOS and everything with no luck.

Wiping my install (luckily didn't have any critical data) and deciding I need a dedicated system image backup solution (any recs?)

So a few days ago I got my mobo (MSI tomahawk MAX), CPU (Ryzen 5 3600) and psu ( Corsair 550 semi) and in a few days my ram (g skill 3600 2x 8 ) will arrive what games will I be able to play while I save up for my GPU

Edit: Welp after everyone saying it doesn't have a integrated graphics ig it's time to save $250 up lmao

Desperately need help building my gaming PC!

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 12:04 PM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Playing my laptop for years, I've never really been able to play most games I want to, and even when I could, it's been very low settings with terrible FPS. My goal is to be able to play games and enjoy them.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Screen res: 1920x1080p Framerate: I would love to have a 144hz monitor, so I suppose my goal would be 144 fps. As for game settings, I don't expect much or ultra settings, but would appreciate being able to play with medium-high graphic settings and still having high FPS.

Games I play: Fortnite, WoW, LoL, and Apex Legends. Obviously I know turning on shadows in games decreases FPS by a lot, so I wouldn't have this setting on. As an example, with Fortnite I would have epic view distance and maybe medium textures & effects.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

I'd like to keep my budget at €1200, however if you have any suggestions or advice that I should push for 1300, I'd like to listen.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

Sweden, so my currency is SEK. That would mean my budget is at 12 000 SEK - 13 000 SEK.

    My suggested build.

So I couldn't figure pcpartspicker out as I had trouble finding the parts I had in mind. So I made this list on the website I am planning to buy the parts from:

    https://www.inet.se/kundvagn/visa/13370301

It's in swedish, but shouldn't be an issue reading the components. And google chrome offers to translate webpages, so you could use that too.

I'd appreciate if someone could check the list out and give suggestions regarding what I can add, remove or keep to lower the price, or if this is what I need to go for in order to reach my goals mentioned above. Rather not go higher with the price. The total price for the build I suggest is 13900 SEK which is way over my budget, but that's because I am not very informed regarding how well certain GPUs perform so I picked one that looked ideal (2060), however, if someone has more affordable options I'd love to read them.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I just hope I can get help with this as I wanna build my gaming PC since buying a prebuilt one doesn't seem to be ideal, but I'm not too experienced regarding gaming PCs and components etc.

Upgraded from i7-3930k to 3900x; here are the results

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 06:30 AM PST

Like many, I have been sitting on a half-decent i7 rig for many years. Upgrading the graphics card every now and then kept me happy with gaming performance and I was struggling to pull the trigger on an upgrade.

Today I finally did it and went to an AMD Ryzen 9 3900X.

I kept the 1080 as I'm waiting for the 3000 series Nvidia cards to be released.

So here is a comparison of what a new CPU, motherboard, memory, and NVMe give you.

    TLDR:

    12% improvement in average FPS in F1 2019 (1440p)

36% improvement in average FPS in Far Cry New Dawn (1440p)

Monitor Suggestion: 24" 1080p or 27" 1440p with my setup? IPS suggestions only, please!

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 01:54 PM PST

I'm hoping someone can help me decide what kind of monitor I should buy based on my set up. I'd like 144hz, but I've been gaming on 60hz for the past 5 years so I'm sure even 75hz or 120hz would impress me, lol. I'm kind of overwhelmed with choice and having a hard time pulling the trigger.

    PC Specs:

    • MOBO: MSI B450 Tomahawk Max
    • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6 core with Wraith Cooler
    • RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16 GB
    • GPU: MSI Gaming Geforce RTX 2060 6 GB
    • PSU: Corsair CX Series 650 Watt 80 plus Bronze Certified Modular

Again, viewing angles and brightness/color accuracy is important to me (I mostly play immersive RPGs) so I really want to stick with an IPS panel. Any help would be appreciated!

EDITED to add the GPU, because I'm a dingus.

    My first PC build!

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 05:24 AM PST

Hey guys, new reddit user and soon-to-be PC owner here!

Sorry in advance for the formatting!

Anyhow, I've recently bought my first parts (incl. monitor, keyboard, etc.) and I'm currently waiting for them to be delivered. I was a bit confused about which parts I should get, but ended up ordering a build, which is most certainly overkill for my needs atm - 1920x1080 60/75Hz - but thought I'd share it with you guys for feedback/roasting xD.

    • CPU
      AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 3.6 GHz incl. Wraith Stealth-cooler
    • GPU
Gigabyte Geforce RTX 2070 Windforce 2X 8 GB DDR6 (read som mixed reviews about this, bought it for 399$).
    • Motherboard
      MSI B450 Tomahawk Max
    • Ram
Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-3600 C18 BK DC 16 GB (2x8)
    • SSD
WD Blue 3D NAND SSD 2.5" 1 TB
    • PSU
Gigabyte GH750 W 80+ Gold Certified (prob. going to get roasted for this, but I got it at a really favorable price, even though 750W is certainly overkill).
    • Casing
      Phanteks Eclipse P300 w/ 1 x 120 MM fan at the rear
    • Cooling
      2 x 120 MM be quiet! silent wings 2
    • Monitor, keyboard & mouse
I've copped a 24" ASUS monitor, with 60-75Hz refreshrate (def. going to upgrade this in the near future, no worries) & a Razer Cynosa keyboard along with a Razer DeathAdder Elite.

Total cost: 1.161,84$ (could've been cheaper w/o monitor, keyboard, mouse).

NB: I know I could've gone for a way cheaper build and still get incredible performance at 1080p gaming with a less costly GPU, easily could've gone with 3200MHz RAM also and less watt, but I'm going to be upgrading monitor/cooling/etc. in the near future and probably play around with OC'ing once I feel comfortable doing so & generally wanted to make a build that's going to last me a very long time.

TL:DR Noob builds first PC & goes overboard with parts ;)

Sorry for any grammatical errors, I'm not a native English speaker.

No red flags or any obvious ways to make it better?

I did not want to overspend on mobo - did not see a person. Decided to put in the extra £15 on the fan and go with Noctua instead of Evo 212, other than that I feel its quite standard.

Bit unsure about the PSU and whether it will manage?

Why does static electricity cause monitors to flicker / computer to reboot?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 08:47 AM PST

First of all is anyone else having problems with static electricity this time of year? I'm in Minnesota and using a fabric chair on carpet... and every time I have to touch my metal computer case it terrifies me.

I noticed on multiple occasions that if I accidentally transfer static electricity to my monitor casing it causes flicker. On another instance when I transferred a particularly large shock to my computer casing, it caused the computer to reboot.

Why does static electricity cause these to happen? Is it some built-in protection against shock? Is static electricity likely to hurt my gear?

    Thanks guys

    Final thoughts on AMD build

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 01:40 PM PST

    Hey all,

I am finally getting around to building a new PC. My last one was built in 2012 and isn't able to play some newer titles. I am looking for feedback on my newest proposed build. I am able to reuse parts from my previous build such as PSU and HDD to help keep the around $1000 for the PC.

I would also like to be able to handle VR games when I get around to saving up for a Headset. As well as handle newer games on Max settings. I believe this build should all handle that just want to hear other opinions before i pull the trigger.

I was struggling to pick out a good monitor that would use the GPUs full potential. So if there are any other recommendations I would love to hear it. I was hoping to spend about $300 max on a new monitor.

HELP My pc was working fine and now its broken

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 09:48 AM PST

I'm a student and my current PC is one that I built about 3 years ago, I've been using it and its been fine until today. Some really weird things are happening to it. I opened the side panel about a week ago to clean the dust and replace the thermal paste, and it worked good after doing that.

    The parts are as follow

    i5-6500, ASUS B150M Plus D3, 4x4GB DDR3L ram, Nvidia gt 1030, 128gb ssd and 1tb hdd, and a 350 watt Seasonic 80 plus bronze psu

Starting yesterday, the PC wouldn't post at all! I turned it off and pressed the power button yesterday and the PC blue led fan spins, the orange light on the motherboard glows, but the fans spin on 100%. Usually it gives a post beep but there wasn't any. There were no beeps, so i shut it off for the day

I didn't use my PC yesterday but today I needed it to do work, but it still did the same thing. I've been pulling my hair out for the past 5 hours trying to figure out what is happening to my PC.

Here are the things i tried already:

    1. reseat the CPU - nothing
    2. Try to run without GPU using integrated - nothing
    3. reset cmos - nothing
    4. Checked for bent pins on cpu, there werent any
    5. Change up the memory: There are 4 dimm slots, and from what i found, only 1 and 2 work. For example, with 1 Ram stick in each slot only 1 and 2 posted. with ram in 2 and 4, it didnt work and with ram in 1 and 3 it didnt work. But with ram in 1 and 2 it posted but with ram in 2 and 3 as well as 3 and 4 they didnt work. Basically dual channel is ruined.
    6. After it posted with 1 ram stick, i updated the bios but still nothing worked.

Basically right now only ram slot 1 and 2 work, 3 and 4 don't so it basically cut my memory in half and i only have single channel. It still works fine, but I don't have the money to replace my PC, and having only 8gb of ram for multiple tasks and apps running at the same time isn't cutting it. Any advice or is my motherboard completely screwed

Unable to use all of RAM and not sure where to go next

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 01:30 PM PST

So I tried to install a new GPU in an old motherboard and after a day my computer/MB seemed to have died.

Now after awaiting a new MB and a different GPU I have built my PC again, however I have two DDR3 4GB modules and I seems to only have 4 GB of usable memory.

So I am not sure if it is this new motherboard, or my two DDR3 that are over a decade old is unusable, but I come here in the hopes that maybe someone can offer some advice.

    Specs:

    MB: GA-78LMT-USB3 R2

    CPU: AMD FX-8350

    GPU: Radeon RX 580

    Memory: G.SKILL Sniper Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-14900CL9D-8GBSR

SSD: Can't really rememeber specific model

    PSU: Corsair 850 Watts

    OS: Windows 7 64-bit

Edite: Well this is embarrassing, I check each slot and two of the 4 seem to be acting up.

Basically you know how most of the time you put ram one after the other (if 1-2-3-4 then you pair 1-3 and 2-4), the 3-4 are not working so I just put both sticks in the 1-2 and now have all 8.

Well I feel dumb, but thank you to all in this thread who gave me suggestions

Help with X570 Aorus Elite and NZXT H700

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 10:31 AM PST

Hello everyone! I ordered the X570 Aorus Elite motherboard for my system, currently I'm rocking the TUF B450 Gaming Plus. My question is are there enough fan headers on the X570 for my build? There are three fans in the front of the case (preinstalled on the H700), two fans on the radiator (I have the NZXT X52 AiO), one more fan on the top and one fan on the back of the case. Am I good to go or do I need to purchase additional splitters/controllers? Thanks!

Hey guys so basically I bought a prebuilt pc a few weeks back. It's really good well I thought it was. I'm going to list the specs then I'll give the problem - i7 9700k 3.6 -2080 super - ssd 500 - 1tb hhd - liquid cooled cpu - 16 hbu ram 2666 (2x8gb)

For some reason when playing games it freezes a lot or I don't cap at 240 on games that wouldn't be too hard to run. For example like Fortnite. I'll hit 450 FPS at points but when something fast happens everything lags or when there's intense moments with a lot of things happening my pc going down to 120 FPS. Which feels horrible on 240 hz

Anyways I need suggestion on what to upgrade and why my pc isn't performing well

    Need Help Upgrading My PC

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 08:55 AM PST

As the title says, I need some help in upgrading my PC. It's fairly old at this point, about 2014ish and it came prebuilt. I'm planning on moving away from consoles and using my PC as the primary platform for myself so I'm hoping for something that'll last a while.

As per friend suggestion, I'm posting here with my specs. I'm not all to knowledgeable but I think I need a new graphics card? I can currently run stuff like Overwatch (on low settings) and some smaller Steam titles but anything current really chugs. Tried running Division 2 on all low with some performance boosting outside options and it was like playing a muddy slideshow. I was thinking of purchasing this as an upgrade but as I said, I definitely need more help understanding what exactly is needed. A buddy of mine mentioned more vram and it seems good on the outside looking in?

I'm open to any and all advice in upgrading my pc to run modern titles. I'd be happy with medium and stable frame rate, honestly. Only issue is my upgrade budget is around $500 CAD so that might get eaten up really quick if I don't know what I'm looking for.
