    Simple Questions - February 29, 2020

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 04:09 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

New gaming build, hoping for second opinions.

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 01:10 PM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming primarily, internet usage/watching videos second. Not 4k, not VR, no streaming.

I'm not in a particular rush if there are releases/price drops expected within the next few months.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Highest requirement title is probably Star Citizen. Due to limited desk space won't be running more than 3x 1080 screens, likely 1-2. Other games include The Division 2, and possibly Borderlands 3/Metro/Outer Worlds.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Aiming for the $1000-$1500 range, possibly including a new screen to replace the 21" ASUS I'm using.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

USA. I have some gift cards for Amazon that I'm trying to use as well

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Mainly checking if there's any big issues.

Hello guys, need some advice regarding a new pc case with the best airflow possible. Cpu clearance must be 168mm and above (deepcool assassin ii). Currently using Deepcool Matrexx 50 and it's just awful, GPU temps go above 80c on 2k monitor while playing Apex Legends. Thanks in advance

Would I be good with this build to game and do normal computer tasks? I also have an online class with just an Ebook and some "live" videos. I'm trying to not be impulsive but it'd be awesome to go grab this and put it together tonight.

Or should I swap some things out and just order and wait for a better PC

    Switching from Intel to AMD

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 09:39 AM PST

I was wondering if someone could possibly give me a little advice. I was looking to make a few upgrades to my PC and I am going to be switching from Intel to AMD. I don't know a whole lot about AMD so I was looking for a little help. I currently have an I5-8400 and was curious as to what AMD processor I should pick up. I was looking at either the 2700x or 3700x. I have the money to go with the 3700x I'm just not sure if I actually need that though. It is mainly for gaming and I rarely do anything super intensive. I'm wondering if it would just be smart to go with the 3700x so I can just have it for the future. Thanks to anyone that helps and if you have any other suggestions besides those two processors please share. Thank you!

Is Ram compatibility a bigger deal with Ryzen mobos?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 09:19 AM PST

Hey there. I've got a b450i gaming strix from asus and have a kit of f4-3600c16d-32gvkc and f4-3200c16d-32gtzkw at hand both worked fine on my z170i pro gaming but neither of the sticks allow my b450 board to post. Its stuck at the yellow troubleshooting led indicating a ram issue. Bios isnt updated since it hasnt posted yet.

    I'm really clueless right now.

I am once again asking you for your help to build a pc

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 09:42 AM PST

So, I already asked sometime back on the simple question thread and people were kind enough to suggest this build. I have zero experience with building a PC and in what I could learn online, people seem to dissuade first timers from using small cases.

I will primarily be using this to try and stream to twitch and maybe start a YouTube channel.

I am looking for alternative and most value for money builds which are easy to assemble and would work reliably. I kind of don't want to spend more than 600-800$ but if that's a stupid price I can save more and buy later so not a hard limit.

DIY PC building has improved so much over the last 30 years...but IMO there are two more (little) steps I'd like to see...

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 07:19 AM PST

In terms of industry standardisation, general increase in robustness / quality, case designs and cable management, tool-less designs etc, it's so easy for any Joe Blow to get into this hobby now. However I think there are two minor steps we still need to make:

    1) PCI-E and Molex connectors are fucking shit. Even the highest quality cables will have the little metal bit that's a bit wobbly and doesn't always connect cleanly. We iterate so often through USB standards and a lot of other connector standards, it always surprises me this is the one that has remained stagnant for so long.

    2) Front panel cables. I think there needs to be an industry standard format. I've built many computers before and each motherboard has them laid out slightly differently, it's easy for me but for new builders it would be good if there was a universal format, e.g. audio is always to the left, followed by power, then reset etc.

Yes you're going to tell me these are nitpicky and I agree. My point is we've come so far, it feels like we're just a small hair away from evolving it to where it needs to be.

I am looking for a cheap 22” 1080p monitor (around £100) for gaming and work purposes. Must be from Amazon UK as I have gift cards. Would appreciate some advice on what is decent.

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 07:12 AM PST

It would need to have VESA mount and HDMI input. I have found either the HP22W for £79.99 or BenQ GW2280 for £89.99 that look ok but any other suggestions would be great.

Should I upgrade my GPU or CPU next?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 12:39 PM PST

Hi y'all, my current set up is:

    CPU: intel core i5-7500

    GPU: Nvidia GTX 1060-6GB

My computer can run most games ok but I often have to sacrifice a lot of quality to get decent frames in game and I find my computer randomly slows down at times for seemingly no reason.

I don't need to run my games on the highest graphics possible but I would like to be able to run them looking decently and still be getting good frames.

I have a 144hz monitor so I would like to make as much use of that as I can.

If I was going to upgrade one of these two components next which should it be and too what?

Any advice is appreciated, thank you :)
