    Simple Questions - February 24, 2020

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 04:16 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

/r/Buildapc and ZOTAC big PC giveaway and charity drive in support of the ASPCA!

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 06:08 AM PST

Whew. Six thousand comments on the GPU giveaway thread.

Those are rookie numbers! Let's keep going while Leonardo Dicapro stares at us uncomfortably.

While we're waiting on the mod team to go through all those entries, it's time to up the ante, and ZOTAC has given BuildaPC the exact opportunity we needed to make some huge gains in the "improving our sub's spot in the Reddit algorithm" and "us giving you free stuff" departments! We're also working with ZOTAC to help make a difference with the setup of a GoFundMe that goes directly to the The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals with donation incentives to unlock more PCs!

Wait, did he say "more PCs"? Damn right I did! The more everyone donates, the more PCs become available to win!

    So here's the deal:

    1. Free entry to the giveaway is submitted via a PCPartPicker Permalink (like this: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/YRKdGc) to our submission form of what parts you believe are in the 2nd PC from the left in this beautiful showcase.

    2. Additional entries to the giveaway are submitted via a donation to the ASPCA GoFundMe, every $5 donated will give you an additional entry. You must include your Reddit username in a comment to the GoFundMe after successfully donating to it for us to be able to track your bonus entries.

    3. PC #1 is included in the prize pool initially, with PCs #2, #3 and #4 being added to the prize pool for every $1000 the GoFundMe raises. #2 will be added at $1000, #3 will be added at $2000, and #4 will be added at $3000.

    4. Done and done. Wait for us to announce the winners!

Take some time to visit our sponsor's subreddit, Facebook or Twitter while you're anxiously waiting for the contest to run down. This is not required for you to participate or win, but we really appreciate the contributions of ZOTAC and their partners towards this giveaway and we think they deserve the plug here.

    Terms and Conditions

    • Entries close at 11.59PM EST on 02/03/2020.

    • Users who submit a valid entry, in the form of the Google Forms submission with a valid PCPartPicker permalink, will be entered into a draw for one of up to four complete PC systems as described below.

    • Additional entries will be added to the draw for every verified donation to the GoFundMe described above in the form of one additional entry for every $5 USD donated. You must comment on your donation after successfully donating to the GoFundMe with your Reddit username for your donation to be valid and attributed to your Google Forms entry for additional chances to win.

    Eligibility and Subreddit Requirements

    • This is a US-only giveaway - users from the United States of America (excluding Alaska and Hawaii) are eligible to enter. You must be able to provide a US mailing address if you win.

    • Users must have at least one previous comment or post on /r/buildapc to be eligible to enter.

    • Users must have an account at least one week old as of 24/02/2020.

First Gaming PC - Does this look good for 1440p gaming?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 03:32 AM PST

    Hi all,

This is my first attempt at building a PC, and I want it for gaming. I have taken advice from here, YouTube and people I know and would like to see what you all think of my build.

    Thanks!

Edit: Forgot to mention I was hoping to run at 144hz but will be happy with 60hz, suggestions for either is much appreciated!

    Type Item Price
    CPU AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor £143.99
Motherboard Asus PRIME X570-P ATX AM4 Motherboard £155.99
    Memory Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 Memory £79.98
Storage Samsung 970 Evo 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive £90.49
Storage Seagate Barracuda Compute 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive £49.99
Video Card Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER 8 GB GAMING OC Video Card £385.98
Case Phanteks Enthoo Pro ATX Full Tower Case £84.89
Power Supply Corsair RMx (2018) 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply £88.98

Edit2: To everybody commenting, I can't emphasize enough how much I appreciate the advice I have been given. I planned on thanking each commenter individually and tried to, but this post blew up and gained far more traction than I anticipated, so thank you all again!

Now an update on my build; from what you have all said I have managed to squeeze in a 2070 Super with only a marginal increase to the build cost over all! So it looks like I will be heading for over 60fps gaming at 1440p!

    For those interested, this is what I think I am going to go for, however I am still debating the RAM and will probably drop down to a 550W PSU;

Looking to build a PC ? Buy your parts as soon as possible.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 11:12 AM PST

    Hey Guys

So just a quick note I wanted to make to fellow lurkers out there who might be looking to upgrade / build their PC rigs in the very near future ; or people looking to buy expensive hardware in general.

Owing to China's factories being shut down for the time being and the imports being put on hold , the prices of hardware might start spiking significantly pretty soon. Plus I believe due to the demand for next-gen Consoles' manufacturing and hence for GDDR6 Memory , GPU prices might go up regardless.

Now I am not the most knowledgeable when it comes to Corona pandemic , however all of my Offline stores I visited recently conveyed that they will hike the prices of the hardware from March 1st. My relative working in imports said the same thing , and advised that I buy it all soon as possible.

I purchased my components today (will be posting the build ready pics soon enough) , since I was looking to build this rig next month itself anyway.

That's about it. Hope this might help some people be more prudent.

New built PC won't turn on if GPU is in.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 05:18 AM PST

I finished building my PC yesterday but I have an issue with it not turning on. If I have the GPU plugged in, the power button does nothing at all. If I take out the GPU the PC will power up, but then nothing will display. I originally thought it was a problem with the BIOS not supporting the CPU so I used an older CPU to test, but with the older CPU everything works fine, it turns on and I can use the graphics card. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing these problems?

Build: CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X GPU: GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER MoBo: ASUS ROG Strix B450-F Gaming Power: Corsair RM750 RAM: Corsair Vengeance (2 x 8GB) DDR4 3200 MHz

Working CPU is: AMD Athlon 200GE

Low FPS in everything I play, upgraded graphics card, same issue, should I upgrade motherboard and cpu?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 01:05 PM PST

Be gentle with me I don't know much about all of this and am learning as I go. I'll start with what I have.

    Processor: AMD FX(tm)-8320 Eight-Core Processor 3.50 GHz

    Ram: 16GB don't remember brand

    Graphics: GeForce 1650

My system model is labeled as to be filled by OEM, but I can see it's a gigabyte.

    Two questions?

    1. Why is my damn fan so loud? I've cleaned the computer many times it doesn't do anything. It's loud even while not doing anything.

    2. I only play Escape from Tarkov, used to play Pubg, and the highest frames I've ever had in-game was right at 40 and that was for a brief second, the rest of the time I'm playing at 20-35. I just upgraded my graphics card hoping that will solve my issue, it did not.

Should I buy a new motherboard and CPU or is there something I'm missing here? I'm sure I'm lacking info that y'all need so please tell me what you need and I'll add it in as we go.

Please help me, my PC wont launch games anymore

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 11:01 AM PST

    Hello there,

I got my PC about 2 months ago and since today it does not launch any games anymore.

I launched PUBG this morning (didnt play any match tho) and it worked fine. Now it will freeze once its the main menu. But in other games the crash occurs as well.

Its just like a screenshot where the game is frozen and then its usually a screen that is a solid color (grey, light pink,...) and then the game shuts down.

I tested this with Rainbow Six Siege (DirectX and Vulcan Engine), PUBG and Forza Horizon 4. However Forza will load into the game and Ill be able to play for 10 seconds if the settings are on the very low preset.

Also I suffer from random BSODs when Iam booting, but never once Windows booted. The errors are differnt each time.

    Things I tried:

    MemTest86 --> no errors, 1 pass

FurMark --> no problem, GPU was below 70°c at all times

CPU-Z CPU benchmark --> all good, no crash or anything, CPU below 80°c at all times

FurMark and CPU-Z stress test at the same time --> works, no issue (so most likely not a PSU issue?)

clear CMOS by removing the battery for 5 min --> didnt change anything

reset RAm to 2133MHz (disenabeling XMP) --> didnt change anything

DDUing GPU drivers and reinstalling them --> no difference, did it several times

verified Win10 files by cmd --> no errors found, OS seems to be fine

EDIT: In userbenchmark my CPU is suddenly underperforming (20th percentile) maybe thats something?

EDIT2: in the second test it isnt...the fxxx?

worth noting is that it first tarted when I played Forza Horizon 4 while the game was updating and it crashed then. Maybe DX12 corrupted,...?

    My specs:

    AMD Ryzen 3600x (stock)

be quiet! pure rock CPU cooler

MoBo: MSI B450 Gaming Plus Max

GPU: MSI RTX 2070 Super Gaming X Trio

    PSU: Corsair RM750X

Drives: Corsair MP510 240GB (Windows 10 and drivers)

WD Blue 1TB 7200rpm HDD (games etc...)

Please help me....Iam out of ideas at this point.....

What to Look for in a Monitor?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 07:11 AM PST

    Hey All,

Please don't roast me.. but I need some help. In my venture into PC gaming, I have learned a lot about computers. But as much as I read and learn about computers, I feel like I still know nothing about monitors. Ive been looking everywhere, but still feel like im getting nowhere in learning what I really want in a monitor, and what specs are important, and which arent as important. Can someone help explain to me which specs are important, and maybe offer a few suggestions?

For reference, I have a 1070, i7 7600k, and 16 gigs of ram (if this helps).

    Headphones

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 10:51 AM PST

I was wondering what are some good headphones for a reasonable price. It doesn't have to have a mic on it. Just need something that's good for sound, and hearing people's footsteps in games.

I had a problem yesterday where everything was working except for the fact that nothing would display, but I figured it out.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 02:36 PM PST

I went through every step to make sure everything was in its correct location, even removed the motherboard and every wire connected to the power.

Then I realized the only thing I didn't try to mess with was the memory. I'd installed it in the first and 3rd slots as was told to me in multiple tutorials. I told myself "hmm, I've checked everything else and the diagnostic lights on the MB are all off (meaning everything is working), but there isn't any light for the memory. Plus someone mentioned that the memory could be an issue."

I decided to switch the memory to the second and fourth, and everything worked just right.

    Thank you, all!!!

How necessary is a mechanical keyboard for a non-PC gamer?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 07:04 AM PST

I'm looking to upgrade my keyboard as I currently just have a standard Logitech bluetooth Keyboard Mouse combo (K330 if you must know).

I don't game on my PC but I do a lot of daily typing (coding, Linux Terminal, University work etc).

I've never owned a mechanical keyboard nor typed on one before so the variety of switches all seem very overwhelming for a first timer.

My main reason for upgrading is because I have about $60 Amazon.com credit, except I live in the UK so shipping is a b*tch.

I'm looking at the Corsair K55 as it seems to have good reviews and RGB (something I want), but obviously it's not mechanical (membrane keys). I could continue to save but I'm not sure how long it'd be until I save enough for a new mechanical switch keyboard and then I'm back to the question of switches :/

So is it really worth me saving or should I just get a cheaper RGB one now?

    Thanks for any responses :)

Never noticed how loud and annoying hard drives are.

This is a pretty simple post but man do hard drives get loud when under load, I used two have 2 in my system for games and personal media, but I recently decided to upgrade to an all SSD setup since there was a pretty good deal on them at my local microcenter. So I splurged a bit on some 2.t inch ssd's and wow now the PC is basically dead silent even when my ear is right next to the system. This goes along with all the other benefits of SSD storage faster load times and such. This is along Really glad the future of PC building is all about solid state storage and not spinny metal disks (:

Graphics card died; need advice on replacement

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 02:18 PM PST

    Hey everybody,
Thanks in advance for any input!

I have a pre built PC from 2012 and would like to replace the dead graphics card (3GB AMD Radeon HD 7950). I knew my graphics card was going to give out any time since it was benchmarking at 1st-3rd percentile for comparable builds. All drivers were up to date and dust was cleared up. Well I guess it finally gave in. Now the screen displays strange graphics artifacts after a 1-2 minutes after boot up.

I'm in grad school and don't have much time to game which is why I would like to put off building a new PC for 2-3 more years. I'm hoping replacing the graphics card will be cost effective to keep this thing chugging for a little bit longer.

I wouldn't mind any compatible graphics card with comparable performance. I'm not looking for a full upgrade. I plan on buying an all new graphics card for my new build in the future. Price is probably my biggest priority. Hopefully I can find something around $200 or less (preferably)

Here is some info on the build that I bought from HP:

    • Motherboard: Pegatron IPIWB-PB
      • chipset: Intel X79 Express
      • Expansion slots:
        • PCI Express x16 (Gen 2.0): 2
        • PCI Express x1 (Gen 2.0): 2
        • PCI Express x1 mini card: 1
      • Memory slots: 4 DIMMS, 16 GB max
    • 3GB AMD Radeon HD 7950 graphics card
    • 2nd gen Intel i7-3820 processor
    • 10GB DDR3-1600MHz SDRAM
    • 600W Power supply (unknown)
    • Couple of SSDs and HDD

Thanks again for any advice! Let me know if you need any other info.
