    Simple Questions - February 22, 2020

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 04:09 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Big thank you to the sub for helping me complete my first build

    Posted: 21 Feb 2020 07:50 PM PST

Budget was initially $750, but in the end it came out to just over $800.

My kid's a big fan because he says it looks like Kylo Ren... so I'm going with that.

    • AMD Ryzen 5 3600
    • Asus PRIME X570-P AM4 MoBo
    • G.Skill Ripjaws 16GB (2x 8GB) RAM
    • Zotac GeForce 1660 video card
    • Corsair 650W Gold fully modular PS
    • Phanteks P300 tempered glass case

Already had the hard drives that I could use for now, planning on using this build as a base to upgrade in the near(ish) future.

Big thank you to /u/BlackSpirit2106, /u/danmyvan, & /u/dbhaley for the assistance with the build advice.

[Build help] Motherboard dilemma, could use some feedback

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 04:30 AM PST

    Hi guys,

My primary goal of this build is gaming (4K is not necessary just yet).

I'm thinking of building a PC with the following components:

Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X Boxed

Case: Fractal Design Meshify C - Dark TG

    RAM: G.Skill Trident Z Neo F4-3600C18D-32GTZN (32 GB, DDR4)

    Power supply: Corsair RM550x

    SSD: Samsung 970 EVO 1TB (m.2)

Motherboard: MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX OR ASRock X570 Steel Legend (Or any other X570 chipset motherboard)

GPU: MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Gaming X

Right now this build is about +- 1300 euros. That's great because I'd like to buy a monitor as well and my max budget is about 2k. My dilemma: Should I get the B450 chipset or X570 chipset. Is there really that much of a difference (price difference is x2).

I've decided to go for a RX 5700 XT because of the price. I saw the performance is somewhat 5-10% less than a 2070. Is this noticable?

I'd love to hear some feedback about this build before I'm clicking on the order button.

    Thanks in advance.

    $300 RTX 2060? OR $300 GTX 1660ti?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 05:59 AM PST

    Hey builders.

So I've been looking around on some good value GPUs, and I've found the the GTX 1660ti seems to be one of he best value GPUs. I've also seen that the RTX 2060 is better in performance, and this where my issue comes in. I've seen that there are some 300 dollar RTX 2060 cards and some 300 dollar 1660ti cards. Which one should I get? Are these 300 dollar RTX 2060 better or worse than the 1660ti? Are they better? Should I get the 1660ti instead? I'm really confused as to why they are the same price. Can someone help me decide between these two

(Please do not recommend me AMD graphics card or anything else besides these 2 GPUS. Thank you.)

Finalising a 1440p build from scratch - Ready to go?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 11:14 AM PST

So I've decided to switch from consoles my entire life and have tried my best to research parts/incompatibilities etc, and this list is what I've come up with.

It'd be useful to know if I've made any silly mistakes or if you'd advise any better? Aiming for 1440 144Hz where possible or at least 60Hz+ in high intensive games. Think CONTROL, Modern Warfare etc.

Use case: half gaming and half productivity (mainly programming with various VM's, hence the Ryzen 7 for the core count).

    Summary:

    • CPU: Ryzen 7 3700X (decided to try out the stock cooler)

    • MB: MSI B450 GAMING PRO CARBON AC (wifi essential)

    • RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB 16GB (some RGB would be nice)

    • Storage: Mix of NVME (500GB) and HDD (2TB) storage.

    • GPU: GTX 2070 SUPER (aiming for 1440p 144Hz if possible)

    • PSU: Corsair RM 750 Gold (ticked all the boxes + power needs)

    • Case: NZXT H510 (open to suggestions, this looked nice to use)

    • Fans: Corsair LL120 RGB x2

    • Display: LG 27GL850-B 27.0" 2560x1440 144 Hz (many good reviews!)

    • Keyboard/Mouse: Corsair K70 RGB MK.2 and Logitech G602 (pcpartpicker only had the 502)

I've been lurking for a long time so if I've made a mistake please say, criticism welcomed!

    Cheers all.

GPU help, been out of the loop for a while

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 04:47 AM PST

I need a GPU to run current gen games on 1080p or 1440p until the new cards come out. My current GPU died and I'm using an old one that only runs games like WoW or Fortnite, what are my options?

I have a 4690k CPU currently, I don't want anything too pricy and am redoing my whole build the month Cyberpunk 2077 releases because I want to play that on 1440p.

My HDD is running quite slow on my newly built PC

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 01:13 PM PST

I recently finished a new build and have been testing it out. I've checked on userbenchmark and passmark. Both are telling me that my disk drive is very slow. I don't understand why this is happening or how I can fix it.

    https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/24887234

passmark has 3956 as my total score. With CPU at 99th percentile, 2D graphics at 77th percentile, 3D graphics at 99th percentile, memory mark at 92nd percentile, and disk mark at 37th percentile.

Is the Ryzen 3700X twice as powerful as a 2600?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 03:20 AM PST

Here's my back of the napkin math:

    (8 cores/6 cores) × 1.5 single core performance (via Passmark) = 2

I'm getting into doing some bioinformatics work, so if I can sell my 2600 and upgrade for a few hundred dollars and effectively double my computing power, that's a pretty attractive prospect.

Computer randomly restarts when playing games.

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 12:23 PM PST

I built a pc yesterday and it was all up and working until I was playing a game and the screen randomly went black and the computer restarted. My intial thought was the gpu or cpu we're over heating so I put them doing stress test such as (cinebench, furbench) but both of ther temps stayed at reasonable tempatures. I'm clueless as to why it is still crashing? Any suggestions? Help is greatly appricated :)

    Weird boot issues

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 12:23 PM PST

I've been working on a Mini ITX build for the better part of 2 months now. I travel for work and want to have a computer that's easy to transport. Because I travel I haven't had time to work out all my issues until today, where I finally got my PC to boot. However after about 5 minutes it shut down while I was installing windows and I'm now having the following issues.

GFX Card will not boot, bottom case fans do not turn on and none of the LED's turn on either. All of the above turned on properly during my first boot and the only two things I can think of are a short in my PSU or a motherboard issue but I don't know how to test either. Due to the limited out of time I can work on the computer, I'm in a situation where taking everything apart and potentially RMA'ing the Mobo or Case would set me back by another 3-4 weeks potentially which I'd prefer to avoid. However at this point I'm not sure what other steps to take as I've never had a PC boot properly then suddenly turn off, only to have parts not boot.

Error message I got when the PC shut down: Blue Screen

"We've encountered a problem, restarting your computer now."

    Specs:

In Win A1 Plus Mini ITX (650W Power Supply built in)

    AMD Ryzen 5 3600

Gigabyte X570 Aorus Pro Wifi Mini ITX AM4

MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Evoke OC 8gb

    CPU over temperature error

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 12:15 PM PST

I've been hearing rumbling sound i think with one of the fans but it's quite subtle. I have had this error and read to install thermal paste again. I did and the issue did no go away, is there any common things I might be messing up? Like making the heatsink extremely tight instead of just normal tight, anything. Thanks if you have any help

AMD Wraith Prism USB connector can't reach USB 2.0 header on mobo

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 10:38 AM PST

Hey, I hope all is well. I own a AMD Wraith Prism USB (the stock cooler with RGB) and an Asus Prime X470 Pro. I understand that in order to control the RGB on the Wraith I have to connect it to a USB 2.0 header. The problem is that the cord is too short—it can't reach the headers on the motherboard.

Has anyone had a similar issue? Is there a way to fix this issue?

[HELP] PC won’t boot into windows after bios update!

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 08:24 AM PST

Hey, So I built my brand new pc yesterday and I was playing BFV when my pc randomly restarted. I thought it was a once off thing so I kept went back in and played for 2 mins and it happened again. So I looked up solutions and found upgrading the bios could help. So I was updating my bios and it got to around 86% when it randomly rebooted, I thought this was apart of the bios update so I left it for 4-5 mins. It was in the windows boot screen. When I realised it was stuck here and that the lights in my keyboard and mouse wouldn't switch on, I rebooted the pc and went into bios and it said the bios bersion I was trying to install was the bios version installed, so I went back and rebooted, and now it's stuck on the loading screen where you ussualy would boot into bios, but my keyboard and mouse aren't lit up and the only thing I can do is reboot. * I can enter bios, and flash it again, but when I flash it again it still doesn't boot into windoes* any help is greatly appreciated. the board is a gigabyte X570 gaming I've tried reflashing the board, I am able to get into the bios. But not windows

Did I get a bad RX5700xt or are the drivers still bad?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 02:12 PM PST

So I bought a used (the guy bought it they upgraded to a 2080ti the same week) I still have the box and the receipt.

Anyways after an hour or two of gaming, I get a black screen but the pc is still on I still get audio 80% of the time so it's not the whole pc that's crashing just the GPU. It only seems to happen on about 60% of the games i play.

    Does anyone have a fix?

the rest of my parts are:

    • Ryzen 5 2700

    • 16gb DDR 4 3600

    • Asus b450

    First PC Build

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 02:09 PM PST

Hey guys! I've been at work creating this build for a couple days and I want to see what you guys think of it. What I'm looking for in this build is: -1080p Gaming in titles like GTA V etc - Room to perhaps add a second monitor in the future - Overclock-ability? Not to informed on this. Will I need water-cooling? - 144hz 1080p display - 1000$ CAD budget

I've also got some questions: - could I do better with any parts? Are some parts incompatible? - is the 1660 super a good card? Is it still recommended ? Is there any better cards for around the same price?

    RTX2060 + CX450 PSU?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 01:14 PM PST

Hello, I am planning on replacing my my gtx1050 with a budget of £300. I have no idea if it is worth spending £40 more on an rtx2060 + 40 again for a better power supply or if i should buy the 1660ti for £260. However I want to hear your views whether I should save £40 by not buying a PSU and sticking to the CX450 as it should work fine with the 1660ti and should be questionable for the 2060. I won't be overclocking anything and most likely have Vsync on until i get a better monitor. Which im looking for a 120hz most likely. I wan't to have the better pc for the future and wan't to try out RTX and use it to its full potential but my primary focus is RDR2 and CP2077. Most likely every game at high-ultra settings at 1080p@60hz. My full specs:

    GTX1050

    Ryzen 5 2600

    16GB 3200mhz RAM

    Asus b450m-a

    CX450

    250GB SSD + 1TB HDD

Ready to buy pretty quickly, haven't upgraded in 8 years and probably won't for another good while so I want to start strong. Chose some specific parts because of microcenter availability/price, but not necessarily tied to them so any suggestions welcome. Not necessarily sold on needing the 5700XT, but I figured for the extra $40 from the 5700 it's worth the bump if I want to keep it for a long time.
