    Simple Questions - February 21, 2020

    Posted: 21 Feb 2020 04:12 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

In theory, could I keep my pc outside when it’s chilly out?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2020 03:49 AM PST

I don't plan on doing this, just wondering why or why not I could or couldn't do this. Thanks

Check your motherboard vrm heatsink screws before declaring your build complete!

    Posted: 21 Feb 2020 04:28 AM PST

Just installed a second ssd in my b450 tomahawk max, which requires removing the back side panel. Whenever I do so I generally check that the CPU cooler backplate is still nice and tight. This time I noticed two smaller black screws to the right of the backplate and saw that they were holding the nb vrm chokes' heatsink in place, so I figured I'd check them too and lo and behold, they were quite loose. So I tightened them.

Nb "System" (as measured by hwinfo64) temps immediately went down by about ten degrees when I restarted the pc and stayed there at light load, a cool 31 degrees (they'd been around 40 previously iirc).

I've had this board since December and as far as I know the screws were never properly tightened until now.

Edit: crap I just realised there are two heatsinks towards the top of the board and one near the bottom right and the other two are covered by the motherboard tray of my case, now I feel like I need to remove the mobo and check if they're tightened as well. RIP my afternoon. LOoks like I tightened the heatsink over the chokes but not that over the capacitors or the mosfet or something else. All should be (reasonably) tight.

I'm referencing this (older, the design of modern mainboards may look a bit different) diagram to figure out which heatsinks I tightened. If anyone has a mainboard diagram for my Tomahawk Max I'd appreciate if you could link it. Thanks!

First build after 9 years! Red/Black Ryzen 1440p/144Hz Build Complete

    Posted: 21 Feb 2020 06:57 AM PST

After having an Intel 2500K gaming rig I built in 2011 for 9 years, I finally was tired of so many games having lower FPS in the past several years and had the cash to make a change. I actually crossed the dark side for the past 4 years or so (played Xbox One exclusively). Happy to be playing on mouse and keyboard again.

I bought the parts across two weeks, managing to get every single part on sale (no mail in rebates for me, though), and built it over a Friday night with a few beers.

I have ran some benchmarks/checked temps, installed and played games (1440p/144Hz is AWESOME), updated everything over the past two weeks and I'm finally ready to say it's completed! I am jumping into manual overclocking this weekend - pray for me.

    Finished!! Ryzen 7 3700X/RTX 2070 Super build!

    Posted: 21 Feb 2020 06:52 AM PST

So I used to help my dad build computers when I was like....12 (am 27 now) and I was an extra set of hands with a friend building hers a month or so ago, but I'm calling this my very first build. It was a roller coaster -- took way longer than it should've, but I did it!

Quick shout out to r/buildapc and r/buildapcforme for helping me finalize the build and answering random ass questions I had. You guys are the best!

Amazon sent me two motherboards like this. Should I keep it?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2020 04:35 AM PST

Got my Mobo the other day like this and not inside a brown box wrapped in bubble wrap.

    motherboard box

Amazon parcels usually come like this: amazon parcel

Contacted amazon who said they'll send a replacement. Got the replacement today and it came exactly the same!! Amazon said I can either return them for a refund or be given a 15% discount. It could be been damaged in transit for all I know.

What should I do? Is it risky keeping it?

Is micro center worth the 1 hour drive?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2020 08:37 PM PST

I live an hour from micro center, in about 2 months roughly I will be building a pc for the first time. I know micro center has a website for each location but for me it was finicky I put items in my cart that said in store then when I went to my cart they said un available so I'm just wondering in the general senses does micro center have better deals than online? Also it being my first time building do they offer a service where they would help me build it not do it for me but help? If it helps my budget would be 1600-1700 trying to get a 2070 super r5 3600 preferably 2 tb of ssd nothing fancy as I know the affect on gaming is minuscule. Thanks in advance!

    Mystery GPU

    Posted: 21 Feb 2020 04:26 AM PST

Two years ago, I bought a used 1050. It seemed to run fine. I recall playing a little Battlefield on it but didn't really use that desktop much at all.

Fast forward two years and I decided the barely used build was taking up valuable space and collecting dust. I put the components up for sale and quickly sold the ram, SSD and PSU. The 1050 was also garnering a lot of interest. I received an email pointing out the the vid card was definitely NOT a 1050. The 1050 does not have HDMI and VGA. Anyway, I thanked the person for pointing it out and pulled the ad.

    https://photos.app.goo.gl/iyFkPoCHfiiJfcFcA

I actually had no problem with the card and want to know what it actually is. Is it enough to find a matching HDMI, VGA, DVI video card with the same layout to determine what my card actually is?

I bought a fake video card and am hoping folks can help me figure out what actually is?

    What's this part

    Posted: 21 Feb 2020 06:24 AM PST

My little brother gave me his semi old alienware, so I was gonna throw it in a prettier case and give it to my daughters for paw patrol. But what is the little subboard off to the right? Can I just eliminate that to move to a new case? I'm thinking it's just a fan controller or something

Starting with a 2080ti to upgrade, need some advice

    Posted: 21 Feb 2020 10:00 AM PST

So I'm going to slowly upgrade over time, but was wondering what parts I can keep, meaning they won't substantially hurt performance if I don't upgrade them (this computer is solely used for gaming at 1440p, I don't do anything like complex video editing or the like). I'm mostly interested in knowing if I should upgrade my processor (will it bottleneck a 2080ti?) and motherboard (it's 4 years old). Currently, the only new thing I'm adding is the 2080ti, so I know everything functions together and PC Part Picker didn't recognize any problems. I'm sorry if this all sounds uninformed, I'm not very knowledgeable in this field.

    PSU DOA?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2020 11:29 AM PST

So, I'm fairly certain the PSU I recently got is DOA. But before I RMA it, I'd like to see if y'all have any ideas to try (short of opening it up).

    Why I think it's DOA:

    • Originally was using a different PSU, but it was too big for the case. System worked fine with it all wired up however. Picture of "Hydra"

    • New PSU refuses to boot when plugged into the system. No fan-spin when power button is pressed, or with a tester (jumping ATX Power On with Ground)

    • New unit fan stutters forward, stops, and then resets to initial position with the ATX cable plugged into the unit, but nothing attached to the end. Essentially, it just looks like the unit keeps starting and immediately stopping.

For additional info, the unit is Phanteks AMP 750W. Apparently it's made by seasonic.

Question about adding 120mm case fan in HP OMEN Obelisk

    Posted: 21 Feb 2020 01:36 PM PST

Purchasing this PC this week and want to do a couple of fan upgrades. There is a bracket pre installed for a 120mm fan on the top of the case but the motherboard only has an outlet free labeled "LC Pump" for a liquid cooler. Would it be okay to plug a normal 120mm air fan into that slot?

GPUs: How much of a difference do memory clock and memory bandwidth make, compared to boost clock?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2020 09:47 AM PST

    Hey gang,

I have all components ready to build my first PC; just need to finalize my decision on the GPU. First gaming system of any sort since my XBox 360, ha!

I'm stuck between these two specific cards. I will mostly be playing on a 1440p monitor @ 60fps, but have always been a console couch potato, so whenever my 1080p TV dies and I replace it with 4k, I may play that more instead (even though I know input lag, etc will be a factor). Even though I have no immediate plans to game at 4k, future proofing is on my mind, as I don't plan on frequently upgrading once I have this build.

You'll notice that specs are almost identical, although the updated version (ultra+) seems to perform closer to the 2080 super by most accounts. Memory clock and bandwidth are the key differences, although the boost clock is the same. I don't know a thing about manually overclocking, but I'm open to it, if the cheaper card could easily reach those numbers.

Do you think the extra $115 is worth it in this case, assuming I'm trying to reach roughly 60FPS in the near future at 4k? FWIW, I'll be a running a Ryzen 5 3600x (the x seems to be a waste, but I picked it up on sale for the same price as the 3600). Here are the specs:

EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER XC ULTRA GAMING

    ($570, B-stock/refurb, 1 year warranty)

    • 1800MHz Boost Clock
    • 288.0GT/s Texture Fill Rate
    • 8192MB GDDR6 Memory
    • 14000MHz Memory Clock
    • 448GB/s Memory Bandwidth

    vs

EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER XC ULTRA+, OVERCLOCKED

    (~ $685, new, 3 year warranty)

    • 1800MHz Boost Clock
    • 288GT/s Texture Fill Rate
    • 8192MB GDDR6 Memory
    • 15500MHz Memory Clock
    • 496GB/s Memory Bandwidth

Thanks in advance for your thoughts! Have a great weekend.

If my Mobo is 12v 4-pin RGB and I want to buy a 5v 3-pin ARGB fan, is there a converter for this? I'm sure this has been hashed out before with the popularity of the MSI Tomahawk, but I can't find anything.

    Posted: 21 Feb 2020 01:21 PM PST

I have a MSI Tomahawk Max which only has 12v analog 4-pin JRGB headers and I'd like to add some 5v 3-pin ARGB fan covers. I know that they aren't directly compatible but I'm surprised that I'm having so much trouble finding an adapter or controller to accomplish this. Does anyone have a product that can accomplish this conversion?

How do you know if certain power supply is powerful enough for future graphic cards?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2020 01:15 PM PST

For example i plan to build a future proof pc that will be able to support future Ryzen 5950 XT im unsure if that's right name for next graphic card form ryzen or for example NVIDIA Ampere when it comes out.

I'm looking at this power supply:https://www.winwin.rs/napajanje-1000w-raidmax-rx-1000ae-b-modular-80plus-gold-89-pfc-13-5cm-black-1163296.html

Is it good enough if i plan to pair it with Ryzen 3700 and future graphic card form Ryzen or Nvidia?
