This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

It is finished. (First PC build)

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 09:26 PM PST

After 4 hours and many curses, me and a friend built my first PC. All in all, it wasn't all that difficult. Putting in the radiator only to realize we'd blocked the CPU_FAN pins was a bit disheartening, but other than that, it was great! That feeling of turning it on and seeing the BIOS is how I imagine birthing a child must feel like.

Without the intense pain and mortal danger of course.

    Here's the parts list!

This was an awesome build and a dream of mine. First SOLO build. Honestly not tough just cable management - I already noticed a few things I need to tidy up tonight as far as fan cables go. I was originally going for all white and was getting LL120s in white but then decided to do Black and White and did the QLs. I still painted in Plastidip the Cablemod vertical mount.

Im in love with this machine. A HUGE THANK YOU TO THIS SUB!I lurked on here for months picking and researching parts and ended up with all of this:

Just helped a friend upgrade from a HDD to an NVME drive.

    Posted: 17 Feb 2020 07:18 AM PST

So I have a friend who, a few years ago, wanted to get into the gaming space for a while, and he started looking for a PC.

The first one he got had an FX 4100 and a GT 710, which was good enough for him at the time. Now, he's upgraded his GPU to a GTX 970 which will hold up for a year or two more.

Just a few weeks ago, he told me his PC is starting to sound like a jet engine and loads things really slowly (He still had an HDD). So what I did was I threw together a parts list for him to upgrade.

The following is what I told him to get:

    Ryzen 3 1200 Gigabyte B450M-DS3H 16GB DDR4-3200MHz Ballistix RAM Intel 660p NVMe SSD 1TB

He really wanted a lot more storage, and also wanted an SSD since his games and apps weren't loading fast. And the Ryzen 3 1200 will give him a great IPC boost, bring the TDP down and reduce noise a good amount. Also, its motherboard allows for NVMe SSDs.

He didnt want to put it together, so I helped him out and put it together.

On a side note, he had an MA620P that was running off of an internal RGB hub instead of the motherboard, and with his new processor he could run it from the motherboard.

Anyways, after finishing up, I closed the side panel (I kinda worried if that was a bad idea) and turned it on.

    It worked first try!

We installed Windows, installed his programs, and got everything running.

After just a few days, he told me that it's so much better and responsive.

Best upgrades for an aging gaming PC?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2020 12:31 PM PST

Hey guys, I have an AMD FX8320 with a Radeon HD 7870 GPU, and my motherboard is a gigabyte ds3p AM3+. I have been having overheating issues lately, along with my VRMs overheating since this motherboard can't really keep up with modern demands, especially with this CPU. What is an $600> upgrade I could look into that would be able to grant me some better parts? I would like a Ryzen cpu but I know that means I'd need an AMD4+ motherboard, and I'm not too sure would a low price would be for one of those.

    Is my motherboard toast?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2020 10:53 AM PST

After powering down my PC last night and turning it back on this morning I immediately had issues with my monitors showing 'No Display'.

Unit boots to Windows but offers no display. Reset CMOS. Tested with 2 different known good display. Tested with 2 different known working GPU (Nvidia 2070 Super, EVGA GTX 1060). Tested with top & bottom PCIe slots. Also attempted with onboard HDMI to atleast access BIOS. And last but not least, reseatted ram into slots 1 & 3 instead of 2 & 4 and power cycled. No avail.

Edit (Update) So, I tried each stick of ram separately. Nothing. For shits and giggles since EZBUG code indicated no boot device detected I inserted my Windows 1909 ISO flash drive and instantly got display from my HDMI monitor. I loaded into Windows, rebooted into safe mode & uninstalled GPU drivers. Then I rebooted into Windows and reinstalled GPU drivers. Still no Displayport video, though. At this point I'm very confused at what the issue is but I am glad to have got the PC back up and running. Ideas?

First build and not quiet sure about the GPU

    Posted: 17 Feb 2020 05:55 AM PST

A little story up front. I bought my first gaming PC some while ago. This masterpiece by Asus was pure love and I shit you not, this magical beast lasted for 9 years but last summer the GPU died and since a the components were outdated I decided to build a new one from scratch.

I'm pretty confident about all the components I bought so far but the GPU gives me nightmares. I don't have enough money to spend it on something I might need to upgrade in two years (still going to university so the struggle is real).

So far my Set up looks like this: - AMD Ryzen 5 2600 - MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC ATX Mainboard - be quiet! Dark Power Pro 11 550W - G.Skill DIMM 16gb DDR4-3000Mhz

What I'm looking for is a GPU that doesn't make too much noise, has satisfactory cooling and will be able to render new upcoming games (Hellblade 2 for example) smoothly in HD quality.

I thought about getting the ASRock Radeon RX580 Phantom Gaming 8G OC GPU but since I read that the fans get quiet loud I'm unsure about that.. any help or suggestions will be appreciated!

I'm already thankful for those of you who read this until the end and sorry if I wrote something wrong, my mobile phone keeps trying to change everything to german :D

Is the SSD I bought not compatible with the mobo?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2020 02:04 PM PST

I bought an SSD as a gift for someone with the mobo below. The mobo isn't listed on pcpartpicker, but it does have an M.2 slot. I assumed they were compatible because the mobo supported PCIe NVMe. However, the SSD is not being detected. Is the problem that there are different PCIe NVMe standards for the M.2? Or is the M.2 port dead? Apparently this particular mobo has had other problems with dead ports. I have confirmed that interference from an HDD in the SATA port is not the problem.

    The SSD is a XPG SX8200 Pro 512GB 3D NAND NVMe Gen3x4 PCIe M.2 2280 Solid State Drive R/W 3500/3000MB/s SSD (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07K1HMMJC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). The mobo is a MSI Z97 Gaming 5 (https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/Z97-GAMING-5/Specification).

    Thanks!

Planning my first build and looking for a mentor

    Posted: 17 Feb 2020 01:59 PM PST

    Hi all,

Always dreamt of building my own and now that I have settled, that time has come. I'm looking for very experienced help to assist me through the process. I have read up on pc building, have watched a lot of videos, and I am cautious by nature so I won't be making rushed decisions and will be giving each choice a lot of thought. Sometimes too much thought :D

As a casual gamer I've always had low to mid-end gaming units, my current being a MSI GE72VR 6RF Apache Pro, so I'm very keen to building a high-end desktop. I have all necessary peripherals so my focus is on the tower only.

    Location
New Zealand. So mostly I expect this will physically be a solo adventure here unless my mentor so happens to be in Auckland.

    Budget
For the fun of it I started a savings account to make it more justifiable in 1/2 year's time. My budget is NZD$4500 which equates to approx USD$3000.

    Gaming
I currently enjoy PUBG with my clan. It serves its purpose well and as a clan we get a lot of laughs despite its known shortcomings. Mostly I buy AAA titles, my next one may likely be CB2077 when it gets released.

    Experience
I have taken desktops and laptops apart before, cleaning and re-pasting. I know what most parts are and I have an understanding for compatibility. I'm very excited about how much more I will learn from this project and I shall endeavour to be a good padawan!

    The Build so far
Fun101 is to start your own wishlist, which I have. Much of this will likely come to change when it's purchase time but it helps to practice choosing the right parts. So far I have shortlisted the following based mostly on "best X 2020":

I believe compatibility is achieved, which is most important, but not aesthetics. I need to chose my desired finished product appearance and then review once more based on that. Without getting carried away.

    Sourcing
I'd like to source the parts online on websites such as Newegg, and then see if the local NZ suppliers can price-beat or match. To save on shipping, etc...

    Priorities
Tempered glass finish is highly desired.
I'm new to RGB but do not wish for a unicorn barf. Rather a colour duo. White + X.
I'd like a PC that will last a good 5+ years as most in my care usually do.
To achieve a minimum of 144fps would be good to finally experience premium visuals.
I wish to aim for noise reduction for my comfort but also that of a growing family.
Heat reduction is vital to part longevity. As a laptop user, I fully appreciate that.

That's about it for now. If you require more please let me know and I shall edit the post going forward. If someone is keen to assist I'd be very grateful and I know how to show my gratitude. I'd suggest we discuss openly first then take it private to get more productive as time goes on. Again, we have ample time as my MSI laptop is going a fine job for now and this is a project for about 6-8months down the line.

Sorry for the long read. I figured I owe any interested party the courtesy of a proper introduction.
    Thanking you in advance,

    Yorick

RTX 2060 Super or RTX 2070 for 50€ more?

Anyways I can get a RTX 2060 Super or a RTX 2070 for 50€ more.. is it worth the 50 bucks?

Is is normal that the GPU is not fully utilized?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2020 08:36 AM PST

Here's a screenshot of what I mean. Often when I play some games neither the GPU nor the CPU reach 100% utilization. The frames don't seem that bad but I'm curious if my PC is capable of more FPS or not.

    Better choices?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2020 01:29 PM PST

Hi, attached is a pcpartpicker list that ive drafted up. Looking for some criticism and possible pointers to better parts for similar or cheaper prices. The theme of the build is basic (black and white, with as much white as possible) + rgb. I'm deadset on the case and the GPU but basically everything else is interchangeable. Keep in mind i plan to game a ton as well as dipping into content creation. So, any corrections that you would do?

Hi just a quick question if the rubber on the Cpu mount bracket on the rear off the motherboard is not In place will this cause my pc to short and not start due to it being conductive ? My pc currently isn't booting after recently water cooling it and stupid me forgot the rubber on the back off the mount. My pc won't boot at all where all hardware was tested before hand and not it shows no display and can't see bios or anything just straight black screen. Also I can turn the pc on with the main power button but it doesn't turn off afterwards.I have a orange Qled light on for dram and a red qled light for the cpu both showing errors. I was fairly worried at this and looked back through all the parts installed and realised I don't everything apart from put the rubber with the back plate for mounting the cpu block and I am now thinking this may be the cause off my motherboard playing up ? I'm guessing if the back plate is touching motherboard it can cause it to malfunction or short ? Any ideas many thanks
