This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Older PC with a 1080 GTX. What should I upgrade next with $300?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 08:44 PM PST

I have an older PC that I put my 1080 GTX in. I'm wondering what should I do next to upgrade?

    • Motherboard: Asus P8H67-M LE
    • RAM: 8GB DDR3 1333MHz
    • CPU: i3-2120 @ 3.30Ghz
    • 650W Power Supply
    • Stock CPU Fan
    • SATA SSD

Given I have $300, what should I upgrade?

Has anyone had Gigabyte honor their warranty even if you forgot to sign up for the warranty 30 days after purchase, or allow you to register for the warranty? Say, your card broke 2 years into a 3 year warranty, would they still cover it even if you didn't register it/or in 30 days?

What did they do? Anybody experience this?

    4th build complete

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 09:42 AM PST

    Hey guys,

I posted this over on battlestations but I wanted to share this with all of you.

    The main pic

    more pictures

    building the desk

This is my 4th build since 2013, you may remember my latest build that I built into a desk. That is for when I go home, this new one was to upgrade my apartment desktop which I had originally built in 2014 and successfully lasted me 5+ years.

    So this has:

    -I7-9700k

    -Thermaltake p3 case

    -Msi z390 tomahawk

    -4x 8gb ram

    -Corsair 750

    -Msi 2080 super

    -4x sceptre 24in monitors

    -35in curved viotek 144hz

I originally went to hook everything up and got hit with the problem of "your GPU can only support up to 4 monitors". That was the general consensus across all of the forums even when using a proper displayport splitter. I found someone deep in a comment section saying everyone was wrong, and you can actually get 5 if you re-enable on-board graphics in the bios, which is normally disabled when you use a GPU, giving you one more display using the motherboard output.

The desk was built for around $250 minus glass. I had 1in thick bulletproof glass from my grandfather's retired business that I saved in the event I ever got around to building this project. The LED strips and acrylic crystals were cheap and from amazon, along with the toggle switch on the front. Wood was relatively inexpensive for 4inx4inx8ft beams. I built this desk in a way that it can be broken down into it's original pieces, unlike my first desk pc.

    Enjoy!

I blame u/klepperx for the suggestion of bigger monitors on my last build

Would this be good cooling for a 2080s? The green is where the gpu is, the red is for the fans that push air into the pc, and the blue is for exhaust. Any other way that’s better to cool this?

Planning on upgrading my GPU, can't decide.

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 12:42 AM PST

Hi, I've been using a GTX1070 with my i7-7700 for 3 years now, and I've decided that it's time to upgrade since I play at 144hz and it's hard to maintain it with my 1070 anymore. My spare budget is around 500USD and I can't tell if I should buy like a 2070 Super or just go with a 1080Ti? 1080Ti is cheaper in my country however my only worry is that the 1080Ti is getting older.

All suggestions and information is welcome

Update: decided to go with a 2070 Super, thanks for all the advice!

As said earlier, the main goal of this computer will be : virtual machines, programming and text stuff.

I may run 3 or 4 VM at the same time, that's why I'm getting a Ryzen CPU & 16Gb RAM. With the second slot on the motherboard, I can later expand to 32Gb if needed.

IPS monitors because I'm not looking for 1ms response time, just a minimum of 75Hz refresh rate.

Is there something that I can improve/remove/add ?

Finally replaced my almost 9 year old pc

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 02:25 PM PST

Watching for sales mentioned here as well as suggestions has helped me a ton.

Life happened and unfortunately money had to be moved to more important things.

The old system was an I7-940 with 16gb ram 74gb raptor drive. The thing has worked like a champ. Lucky for me the graphic card died in my old pc so this new one came at just the right time.

My son and I assembled a system we are very happy about.

    3700x

    Meshify C

    32gb ram

    1tb rocket 4.0

    2070 super

    650w supply

All in I have about 800 dollars or so out of my pocket. I have been saving up gift cards and cash from Christmas for quite some time. I still need to buy a monitor, but that will have to wait.

I can't believe I waited this long to build! It's night and day difference. The fans are so quiet I can barely hear them running. I stuck with the stock cooler. No plans to overclock. We mainly game and stream with some light 3D editing as well.

A few mistakes were made along the way. I had no power and initially thought I had a bad power supply. Turns out I forgot to plug in the power switch cable and the 8 pin power connector to the board. Windows 10 was slick and the quickest trouble free install I have ever had. No searching for drivers after windows or having drivers on a disk, etc.

Ok so I have a Ryzen 7 2700 (non x) with stock cooler, an msi b450 a pro max (same vrm as tomahawk max) and my case has 3 intake fans and 2 exhaust. What frequency should I put my cores to and what voltage?

    B450 or X570?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 12:28 PM PST

Which chipset motherboard should I get?

I'm upgrading my PC to a Ryzen 5 3600 and originally wanted to get a MSI B450 Tomahawk Max. But I've been thinking of choosing a X570 motherboard instead, I'm just not sure.

The motherboard I've been thinking of is the MSI X570 Gaming Edge wifi. It's pricier but also got some PCIe 4 slots and has better future compatibility. The higher price is not that big of an issue since I've been saving for quite a while now for a new computer.
I could use that one and use an NVMe ssd to its fullest and also install the new zen CPUs on the Am4 slot and the new generation video graphics cards on the PCIe 4, meaning I wouldnt have to upgrade my motherboard. It also helps that the bios wouldn't give me much headache with the R5 3600, since it's my first build.

Since the amd 550 is not out yet, I can't really compare things. What would you do?

Go with the Tomahawk and wait until I upgrade Gpu and CPU or buy it now. Some people also seem to have problems with the X570 chipset, while others praise it. Two ends of the spectrum or would you advise against buying that particular one?

    Need wireless functionality

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 12:33 PM PST

I'm looking for the best bang for my buck on a Wi-Fi card, as well as one that has Bluetooth compatibility.

Speed is somewhat important, although not essential. Latency, however, is of UTMOST priority.

I don't care either way if it's 2 separate cards or if it's 1 combo card.

    My budget is $30-60 USD.

Thank you all so much in advance! Haven't been here in a while but I love this sub.

    First pc build!

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 02:31 PM PST

After a lot of research I finally built my own pc. I'm not proud of how long it took to complete but it's done. It does feel somewhat satisfying having assembled the thing yourself. I ran into a couple of problems connecting the power switch to the motherboard, I had it plugged in the wrong spot but that was the only issue. I learned a lot reading some posts here. For anyone on the fence about building one, just do it if I can do it anyone can!

Raedon GPU driver issues, should I buy a different card instead?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 02:27 PM PST

So I was planning on buying a raedon 5700xt GPU for my first build but as I was about to go and buy it I started hearing, seeing, and reading about driver issues and making it impossible for people to boot their computers. Is there ant easy fix for it? Like said this is gonna be my first build and I currently know nothing about troubleshooting so I was hoping to avoid that as much as possible. Is it worth troubleshooting the thing or should I just spend more money and get a 2070 super or TI? And in case it matters I'm going with an AMD Ryzen 3700 or 3800x depending on the GPU I get. Any and all help is appreciated.

What would be the best upgrade for my older PC? (500€-600€)

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 02:04 PM PST

    Build Help:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Mostly for gaming (Apex Legends/PUBG, other esport titles). Would be great to have an option to stream at least at 720p (if possible 1080p) but it's not a must.

Other tasks I perform from time to time: Photoshop/Lightroom/Rekordbox

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

For gaming I prefer 144Hz, 1080p on high settings. Looking for stable frame rate/performance.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    500€-600€

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

Lithuania. Prices here are mostly a little bit higher then everywhere else (around 20-50€ per part).

This is my current PC and I'd love to get some help with what upgrade would be best for gaming/streaming at the moment..

    Need help upgrading PC

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 02:00 PM PST

    https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Austinll/saved/#view=RCX323

My PC that I built some 6 years ago is finally shitting the bed. I think it's the GPU that's dying, and if it's not I'll cry after I fix it.

Since my current build is a microATX I really don't want to go digging in there again cause of how tight it was, so I want to upgrade to a standard ATX case and mobo.

I haven't been in the know with parts since I built this guy originally, so I figured you'd be better to ask since this sub helped me in the first place.

I currently run a 1440p monitor, and play VR games. I'd like to keep the budget under 600 if possible. I figure since the GTX 980 is so old that budget could still give me an upgrade and be cheap.

tl;dr - new GPU, standard ATX MOBO and ATX case, < 600$. hopefully more power, and using the rest of my old parts. Thanks

    500$ Upgrade Build

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 06:51 AM PST

Hi guys, i've been saving up enough money for months now and accumulated 500$. Now i'm planning to upgrade my rig. Right now my specs are i3-7100, GTX 1050ti, 16gb Ram tforce 3200mhz 2x8(just bought recently), 520w seasonic m12i, I mostly use this computer for csgo, apex, and some premiere and photoshop.

Here's my first plan on upgrading my pc.

    • Ryzen 5 3600
    • Cooler Master Hyper 212 RGB Black Edition ( I'm not OC'ing my cpu, my room just gets hot sometimes)
    • MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX (or should i go with MSI B450 Gaming Plus?)
    • ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 512GB M.2 (using for os and storage since i don't have many files + i have another ssd Silicon Power Ace A55 256gb)

Ranging from 400-410$ from where i will buy it.

Or should I go with Ryzen 5 3500x so i can save extra money for my case and fans.

Need your thoughts about this thanks reddit!

After Upgrading my computer i'm planning to buy a 144hz monitor or should i upgrade my gpu first before monitor?

I edit videos and play games. Need advice for upgrade from i7 6700k

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 01:33 PM PST

I'm finding my self exporting 1080p and 4k footage more often now so I would like a good cpu/mobo combo that's more up to date. I'd also like a cpu that can get good fps in games aswell.

    My current specs:

    i7 6700k

    32gb ddr4 ram

    1080ti ftw3

I need something that will future proof me to easily work and export 4k footage. Thank you.
