This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

[OPINION] We should start recommending more high-fidelity audio products to people that have healthy budgets.

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 10:09 AM PST

I just upgraded from a typical USB "high-end gaming headset" (Logitech G935) to a DAC/Amp and a nice pair of headphones with a desktop mic, and all I can say is that the difference in quality is overwhelming and quite honestly breathtaking. For example, I used to think the directional audio in Hell Let Loose was garbage, but I now realize that I was hardware limited by my headset's poor imaging and sound-stage. Also, I've found myself re-listening to my entire music library because... just wow.

I'd consider my audio upgrade to have a MUCH greater impact to my overall QoL than increased frames per second and I now classify its importance to be equivalent to having a high quality monitor. I can confidently say that my audio setup is my most satisfying addition to my rig since getting my ultrawide monitor.

The folks over at r/HeadphoneAdvice are very helpful and they have a solid community guide that can point you in the right direction. Z Reviews on YT is also an amazing resource, the guy is a true audiophile and knows his stuff. Here is a link to his guide for gaming audio gear.

At the very least, r/HeadphoneAdvice should be added to this sub's list of related Reddits.

So, my PC just caught on fire...

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 06:32 PM PST

I sat down at my computer to write an essay. I try to turn it on, it won't boot. So I turn the psu off and on and the blue light turns on indicating it's booting when I notice through the mesh at the top that something is shorted out and sparking and may be on fire. So I immediately unplug it and begin venting the room out from all the smoke. It looked like it was coming from behind the CPU cooler on the motherboard.

I have a 2600k, rx 580, 32 gb ddr3, a 650 watt corsair psu, micro atx LGA 1155 motherboard (I cant recall the brand or anything right now).

So really what I want to know is how to approach this, and whether or not it is safe to start pulling components out. For now, I'm staying on the toilet seat until I get the guts to go back.

    Edit: reposting with picture

Second edit: realized you can't post pictures so I'm gonna link it instead

So my graphics card just set on fire...

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 11:48 AM PST

I have a HIS HD 7950 iceQ that just set on fire. This card has been used on a semi regular basis for years. I've been away for about 4 months, so its sat idle for a while. Played some games last night for several hours with no issues what so ever.. Today I turned my PC on and it was boot looping. Thought I could smell a tiny bit of burning, so I unplugged it, opened it up and gave it another go.

    This is the result: https://youtu.be/ToXuJhc0_Ag

Absolutely terrifying! So glad I caught it before leaving the room. Could have burnt my flat down! It was just continuously boot looping and setting on fire!

*Edit: Two in one day! Didn't even notice someone had already posted about their PC setting on fire today!

    Budget build for Brothers GF

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 12:36 PM PST

This Build will mainly be used for light gaming (AION, CSGO, Rocket League) and also for Internet browsing, Youtube, etc.

This is my first take at a budget build, since i only ever build mid to high tier PC's

I allready have a old Case of mine that I will use, but i want to change the Fans of the Case (i know they are 3 Pin and not PWM but the case has a Fan controller)

I would be happy with any feedback that you can give me

First computer build. Looking for some thoughts before buying.

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 11:25 AM PST

Current pc has an gtx 760. I think its time for an upgrade.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/VrFQcq

Didnt go for gen4 m.2 but went with the x570 motherboard because of compatibility and future proofing just incase.

Only things im not sure about is cooling and case. How hyped is the wraith prism cooler? Is it a mistake trying to save a couple of dollars on the stock cooler or is it really that good?

Dont know much about cases but didnt want to buy an expensive one if cheaper ones do just fine. Not worried about sound proofing and i like hardened glass.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

It's been about 5 years since my last build and I've been a bit out of the loop as far as the best components go, so I'm just trying to get an idea of if this is the best bang for my buck I can get.

I want to ideally RAID5 the three Samsung Evo 970s. The Gigabyte AORUS MASTER explicitly states RAID0 support, but doesn't mention RAID5, would I need to get a RAID Controller to accomplish it?

The main pieces I'm looking for advice on are the mobo and RAM. Are there better options available in the price range? Also, I just want to doublecheck everything is compatible. From what I can tell, these parts are good to go together, but would like so reassurance from you fine folk.

Thanks in advance for the help!

    Is this a stupid idea?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 09:21 AM PST

For the past several weeks I've been annoyed as all else because of how loud this "quiet PC" has been. From review to review, people commenting how "Noctua fans are superior!" Or "quiet case fans are actually quiet!", I was more than excited to finally build my first PC as a quiet one. Day one, everything seemed under the norm. A little whine here or there, but I didn't have anything to compare it to, so I just thought that's what the technology is these days.

That's when the problems started. I finally found out how to change my fans settings with AI suite, and while the noise has come down a noticeable amount, there is still a fan that is completely and utterly the most useless and annoying piece of shit I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. I've tried everything, removing fans and replacing them, changing around settings in AI suite and the UEFi, but no — it's one god damned fan that is the utter bane of my existence.

While looking around AI suite iii for (hopefully) some answers, I stumbled upon a fan that had (for some ungodly reason) been running at 3500rpm... I was confused.

I don't remember setting a fan to that setting, and if I can change it then why the hell haven't I already done it? I see "PCH_Fan", I look through settings... Nothing. Can't find a tab or preset for it. Decide to look it up to see how to change the PCH_fan speed... Nothing. Stumble upon thread after thread of people saying how Asus needs to add a way of changing PCH fan speed.

I wouldn't mind it, truly, If it was a tiny whine or a background noise, I'd be perfectly fine with it... But it's not. It's loud, and I'm up to here with this ear-soar.

If you were wondering, I've even stopped each individual fan to see where the noise was coming from. Lo-and-behold, no fan cancelled the noise of this cancer. The only fan I haven't tried that, so happens to be running at 3500rpm, is the PCH_fan... The fan I had thought not to worry about because it comes on a ducking $300 motherboard.

Temperatures are 40°-50°C for the CPU, and 45°-50°C for the GPU under idle conditions. Under load? CPU jumps to 60°-65°C and GPU 55°-65°C. Motherboard temps are 40°-45°C under idle conditions, and 50°-55°C under load, with the chipset being 70°-75°C under load.

Would it be a bad idea to just... Remove the damned thing? I'm prepaid to do whatever it takes — disassemble it, block it, hell; if it's not too much, cut the damned thing out. I just can't take it anymore..

Is integrated graphics a good idea?

I was thinking of putting an amd 3400g in my next build, and then saving up for a 1660s. Is this a good idea, or should I get a dedicated gpu now (I wont be able to afford a 1660s, so maybe a 1050)?

    Crucial ballistix RAM feedback

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 02:38 PM PST

Currently looking to buy this: BL2K8G36C16U4BL Ballistix RGB 3600mhz 2x8GB kit

It seems to have suddenly appeared as the cheapest 3600mhz RAM over here so feedback on the kit would be appreciated as there doesn't seem to be any information about timings that I could find. In addition it seems to be Rev-E that is apparently good for overclocking and all that but that's mostly irrelevant for me.

VR gaming rig and mobo queries

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 12:02 PM PST

    Long-time builder, first-time gamer.

Taking the plunge into VR gaming and experiences. Streaming to a 4k TV (as monitor) is also necessary. I don't think either of these uses would require more than a RTX2070S but am I wrong?

I'm also leaning to the Ryzen 7 3700x which should be able to handle these tasks, right? Since this is my first AMD build in 20 years, has anything changed? (j/k)

My current dilemma is the motherboard. So many choices, so many manufacturers, so much florid prose in their descriptions. Very little info on what their differences are.

From a VR focus, are there any features/specs that are absolutely required, or to be avoided on a mobo?
Are there brands to prefer or avoid? Do I need a 570 chipset or is 450 plenty? The stock cooler with the 3700x is sufficient for now? 3200 speed memory seems capable but should I get faster? Will this gpu even fit in the case listed? Is a board with PCIe 4.0 slots fully compatible with 3.0 cards? Was that a dumb question?

I would never say 'price is no object', and certainly don't want to waste money, but I can afford good stuff now so no need to get the 'minimum' required.

    Overkills? Bottlenecks? Critique away:

Tips for building a pc, havent built in almost 10 years

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 10:22 AM PST

I'd like a motherboard that can support both pci express 4.0 and also zen 3 in case I want to upgrade the cpu later this year or next one

CPU a 3600 or 3700x or any other suggestion, I'm thinking of 3600 and then upgrade? is a wise decision?

The most important thing is the storage, a pcie 4.0 storage of at least 256 gig, 500 better if price doesnt skyrockets

And some DDR4, I dont know which frequency.

Please if you can be specific about the parts the better, I'm older and a bit lost that I used to be in the past and overseas so my decision is final, cant return, etc thats why I really need help on this, IK think my budget is between 600-800 but can extend a little if worth it

Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and help on these requests.

I have a Ryzen 5 2600, MSI tomahawk B450 and a gigabyte 1660. The original display shows up perfectly fine. The secondary one (plugged into the motherboard because I don't have a displayport monitor/cords) is this because neither my mother board or CPU has integrated graphics? Using pop os for operating system if that helps.

New PC boot failing on VGA

I recently assembled a new PC for my mom with all new parts, however, whenever I start booting it up it fails after a few seconds with the light on the VGA on and restarts. it stays on for about 4~5 seconds on the first two but then Every third try it stays on closer to 30 ~45 seconds before restarting. I know the monitor I'm using is good, and I have the HDMI cable hooked up strait to the motherboard. What am I doing wrong?

I have an msi mobo and i opened bios. I changed the boot priority to the usb first(i put the highlighted color cd icon) and then a bunch of hdd after it. Idk why there are so many icons. Even if i put the usb icons first its still the same. Btw i have installed windows and put the flash drive in the pc.

Need some advice for a $300 budget build

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 11:21 AM PST

This build is going to be used mostly for 1080p gaming at hopefully decent settings and framerate. Since I'm on such a small budget I'm planning on going with mostly used parts. I've got a few I deas so hopefully you guys can give me your opinions. I'm thinking I could go with something like a Xeon E5 2689, but lga 2011 motherboards are kind of expensive so I would probably have to go with something like a HP z420 motherboard or some Chinese one. I'd pair this with something like an rx570. Or I could get a dell optiplex with probably a 4th gen i5, upgrade the power supply and put in an rx570. Both these options are not really upgradable/ future proof, but I'm ok with that because I really only need something for the next couple years before I can build something with a higher budget. Or maybe I could fit a cheap ryzen build in this budget that I could upgrade as I'm able to? I haven't really looked into that yet so I'm not sure if that would work. Any way thanks for the help!
