Hardware Unboxed - Can We Still Recommend Radeon GPUs? AMD Driver Issues Discussed

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 05:03 AM PST

Excellent coverage of the driver issues by Hardware Unboxed.

    • Steve says multiple times that he has 5700 series GPUs in his daily driver plus two others in his house and has never had a significant issue.

    • They have not been able to replicate the issue in their testing.

    • Their user poll indicated a significant portion of AMD users having one or more issues with their GPUs.

    • Discussions with retailers indicate that returns of AMD GPUs are 5x normal but at the same time the retailers have also been unable to replicate the faults.

    • AMD has acknowledged issues but more than 7 months in they have not been fixed.

    • Steve ends with "going forward it will be quite difficult to recommend Radeon graphics cards" at the same price/performance of Nvidia.

If you dont know Hardware Unboxed, they are an Australian based channel that I would consider "leans toward AMD". Others have gone further and accused them of being AMD shills. They are not shills but have made no beans about being happy that AMD is producing better CPUs and arguably better GPUs than Teams Blue and Green, which is completely reasonable. So in that context, coming out so strongly in being hesitant to recommend AMD GPUs until the driver issues is fixed its pretty remarkable.

They make a very astute observation that bug squashing requires lots of users submitting lots of bug reports, but buggy drivers are driving people from the Red Team to the Green team, reducing the number of bug reports thus making it harder to eliminate bugs. They dont say it, but the most valuable bug reports are from "power users" who can give details on the system, driver revision, activities, etc vice the usual "it broke" that most people send in. This is a very dangerous time for AMD on the GPU side because of this. There is a risk that they lose the very thing they need to fix the problem - experienced users.

    Worth the 15 minutes IMHO.

    Did I ruin my motherboard?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 09:59 PM PST

My 4 year-old self-built computer just stopped booting and displaying anything so I went to pull the video card out and put in a cheapo one for troubleshooting—to see if the video card is busted.

Apparently I forgot to unlatch it, and pulled out the plastic slot itself, so now there are just loose wires.

A couple pictures of the board

Is this just totally hosed? Is there any way to re-seat the plastic bit or is that a lost cause?

If it is a lost cause, do I need to...snip or cover the exposed wires before powering it on again?

The model is a MSI X99A SLI PLUS ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard so I think there's another usable slot where I could put a graphics card, at least to get it limping along until I can come up with a better plan...but I would prefer not to hose everything else in the system, if possible. (I was hoping to just replace the graphics card! Sigh.)

    Which 2070s?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 12:32 PM PST

Hey guys I'm about to pick up a 2070 super in the next couple of days or so and was wondering which one of these 3 shall I grab? Is there even much of a difference beside prices?

    1) Gigabyte WINDFORCE OC 3X https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/tTCFf7/gigabyte-geforce-rtx-2070-super-8-gb-windforce-oc-3x-video-card-gv-n207swf3oc-8gd

    2) Gigabyte GAMING OC 3X https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/L3tKHx/gigabyte-geforce-rtx-2070-super-8-gb-gaming-oc-3x-video-card-gv-n207sgaming-oc-8gd

    3) EVGA XC GAMING https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/xxrYcf/evga-geforce-rtx-2070-super-8-gb-xc-gaming-video-card-08g-p4-3172-kr

I really like EVGA's customer service, and the good look of the card helps as well so is it a bad choice if I were to pick that one?

Edit: Thank you all for the quick replies, EVGA it is.

    Sapphire Pulse RX 580 8gb

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 12:57 PM PST

    Hey guys!

I'm thinking of buying off a used Sapphire Pulse RX 580 8gb (https://www.sapphiretech.com/en/consumer/pulse-rx-580-8g-g5 ) on craigslist for $150 cad (about 113.11 in USD). The seller said that they used it in their company machines, for software testing for about 2 years. They were okay with me testing it as well. I guess I just wanted to ask if I should go for it?
Also, if I do, what are the tests that I could try on it since he's letting me test it out for a day. I know unigine but if there's anything else that I should try please let me know!

    games crashing on 5700xt

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 11:26 AM PST

hi guys. i built a pc 5 or so weeks ago and am having some troubles. any time i boot up gears 4 or 5, it ends up crashing. i can get to the start of gameplay on 5 or just the menu on 4 and it just dies to black screen, requiring a power off/on. i've been on to amazon, who sent me a replacement card and the exact same thing happens. is this a known issue? i've read about the 5700 xt having driver issues. am i just better trying to change cards? if they'll refund me since neither card works, would a 2070 super be a more stable option?

full spec is ryzen 5 3600, tomahawk max b450, red devil 5700 xt. thanks

Ryzen 3900x vs 3700x - Why might I want to go with the 3900x?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 11:25 AM PST

I currently use my PC with the following applications/tasks:

Lightroom - photo editing Photoshop - photo manipulation Clip Studio Pro - drawing with pen display Illustrator - vector art FL Studio - music creation, lot of processing effects Would like to start editing Go-Pro footage

I also play the following games:

Minecraft with shaders Stellaris Cities Skylines DayZ Overwatch Destiny 2 Would like to play Cyberpunk when released

I plan on using 32GB of 3200 ram, an RX 5700 XT video card, and a Samsung Evo 1tb nvme OS drive, 2Tb ssd, 4tb hdd.

Based on this, and my intended workload, is there any reasons I might want to go with the 3900 over the 3700 or would the $160 dollar difference be better spent on other components? If so, which components?

    Thanks.

    Need help with dust

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 11:09 AM PST

I'd like some advice regarding cleaning/avoiding sticky dust. My PC is a few years old, and I'm slowly upgrading everything, but I don't want my new parts to have a bunch of sticky dust when they get older.

When I built my PC a few years ago, I'd try cleaning it around every 3-4 months and I would just have to use compressed air to blow out any dust. Compressed air and Q-tips to wipe some areas seemed to be fine until the dust started getting sticky after a few years. It became harder and harder to clean the dust off and using compressed air wouldn't even move the dust.

It seems like there isn't too much dust build-up inside my case, yet there is a thin layer of tar-like dust that comes off the fans/heatsink when I wipe it with a Q-tip and some 99% isopropyl alcohol.

No one in my household smokes/vapes, however, my PC setup is very close to the kitchen area. Is there anything I can do other than keep any windows near me open and clean my PC more frequently? Maybe getting a better case than my current NZXT S340 may help a bit?

I know the best solution would be to move my setup to completely avoid this issue, but I'd appreciate any other advice on what I else I could do for now.

Fried my Graphics Card - Need a New One

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 11:44 AM PST

I was using a Nvidia 1080 and the thing stopped working. I tried to restart my computer and when I turned my computer back on it shot a bunch of sparks out and died. The warranty ended just a few months earlier. With new cards coming out I am not sure what I should do. I am looking for suggestions from people of either what new card they would suggest I get, if I should wait for new cards for a price drop, wait and possibly buy a new card when they are released, etc.

    Thanks.

My disk drive is messed up and runs at 100% usage a lot and causes every function on my computer to lag.

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 01:54 PM PST

Hi, so as my title suggests this is quite an annoying problem. Im fairly certain its not a hardware isssue as i got a new hard drive installed and cloned my data over but the problem persists. Its gotten quite bad recently that restarting my computer is quite an ordeal and takes about 15 minutes of struggling to get to a useable point.

Ive run multiple malware scans and tried a lot of fixes like defragging and such. I've run every scan of my hard drive and files that i can think of but can find no solutions. I tried to reset my windows to default settings but it didnt even work.

Wondering if anyone has dealt with anything similar

    My first custom PC build!

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 08:09 PM PST

    https://imgur.com/gallery/FhSuMax

This is my first ever pc build. I've only had gaming laptops and pre-builts before, so this was incredibly satisfying to build and see it post first try! The cable management could've been better, but the case was cheap and I had to make do.

I did this on hardcore (stupid) mode because: 1. I didn't try see if it posted before putting everything in the case, and 2. I did my cable management before seeing if it posted or not.

Specs below: - CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 - Motherboard: MSI B450 Gaming Plus Max - Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 C16 Memory - Storage: Crucial P1 3D NAND NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD 500 GB - Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon™ RX 5700 XT GAMING OC 8G - Case: GIGABYTE C200 Glass - Fans: UpHere T12 Series - Power Supply: Corsair CX650 - Monitor: ViewSonic VX2458-C-MHD 24 Inch 1080P - Keyboard: Razer Blackwidow Tournament Edition - Mouse: Logitech G305 Lightspeed Wireless

Is the 5700 xt a better option over the 2060 super?

I currently have a i7500 and 1060 3gb card with 16 gb ram and play 1080 144hz (well I try to). Im wanting to upgrade the graphics card next and wanted a 5700 xt for ages but often I see there are thermal and driver issues. Should I just lose some fps and go for the super for stability.

About to pull the trigger on my first build - advice would be great!

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 01:13 PM PST

First off, here's My Build at microcenter.

This will be my first time buying a gaming pc! I'm intending to use it for game development and RPG gaming. I'm iffy on the graphics card and power supply because I feel like I could do better for both.

Also, I'm still hesitant to buy all of the pc parts now because I'm considering waiting until September/November to get better deals on everything. I wouldn't really use the pc yet since I'm a physics student and never really have time to do anything, and so I would have to wait till summer. But, I might be going on a study abroad and would only get to use the gaming pc for the month of May.

So, a few questions: Is my build good? Anything to change? Should I wait, or buy now?

    Thanks so much in advance!

(For some reason when I opened the link a second time, the RAM was replaced with a motherboard, and so you may have to refresh it!)

Getting black screen and not boot, Msi B450 tomahawk max + ryzen 3600x

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 07:50 PM PST

    • new parts, at first I was getting random black screen, slow starts with ssd boot drive, and now I haven't been able to actually do anything but go in bios

    • I first updated everything when I first got it working. Mobo, GPu, etc all were updated.

    • tried reflashing bios again, still no luck. No OC. All standard settings. Pc also wouldn't wake up from keyboard/mouse, only by power button. On boot the monitor will switch from hdmi to displayport and then turn off due to no signal

    • I'm losing my mind. I was told to get a B450 tomahawk max specifically for it being the best B450 board but it's been absolutely nothing but problems

    Parts: - corsair 450d case - ryzen 3600x - b450 tomahawk max - xfx 5700xt thicc iii ultra - team group ddr4 3000mhz 2x8gb - seasonic gold 850w psu - samsung 860 256g nvme m2 boot drive - samsung 850 ssd 500gb

Was really debating hard for two days tryna get a GPU. Currently eyeing this Zotac 2080 S, what do you all think?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 12:54 PM PST

Started w a shitty build i got from friend that is 4+ yrs old for 200$ containing an R9 280 with Fx 8320, I now bought a A320M with Ryzen 5 2600. So am now debating for a GPU and was thinking about a 2060 S first to fit in budget but heard that is not worth anymore/long term sell, so I thought of buying the ROG Strix 2070 Super for $600 with tax on amazon. But then I saw this Zotac RTX 2080 Super for 652 https://www.amazon.com/ZOTAC-15-5Gbps-Overclock-PowerBoost-ZT-T20820D-10P/dp/B07TKFMHB4/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=gtx+2080+super&qid=1581625107&sr=8-7So what do you all recommend? This is the first PC i am building and kinda just went along with it lmao from a shitty PC i bought for $200 from friend to test out pc gaming. I have a Dell UHD U3415W monitor which I plan to OC to 75 hz and do not plan on overclocking the GPU at all with my 650 GQ PSU.

Edit: New plan is to build from scratch, got myself a new case with the mobo (A320M) and pc and 16gb of 3600 ram as well.

    4 HD Cam Streaming PC

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 06:29 AM PST

    Hi guys,

Looking for some suggestions on a build that will be used to stream table top content IRL with up 2 4 HD camera feeds to the one machine.

Gaming is not required but would be nice if it could handle some newer release at a decent frame rate 1080p I guess.

Been looking at 3700x ryzens but not sure if that's overkill for what I'm asking for.

    Thanks
