This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

    I ordered a 1060 on eBay and received a 1080

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 12:23 AM PST

I informed the seller they sent me the wrong card, they told me it was their mistake and I could keep it. I got the drivers installed and checked GPU Z, so it's not a fake card.

I don't know where I got this good luck, but I'm hoping it sticks around.

I riped my Amd rysen 2600 out of the socket

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 09:18 PM PST

I built my PC it turned on first try and everything was working perfect but, one week later it wasn't outputting video. I went through all the troubleshooting tips and nothing worked so i decided to just rebuilt it to hopefully fix what ever the issue was.

I took everything out of the case put the motherboard on the box I then unscrewed the CPU cooler screws and tried to pull the cooler off. I thought the thermal compound was just a bit solid so i pulled harder, the cooler came off.... with the CPU fused the the bottom and the retention leaver still down on the socket. i used a heat gun on the cooler to warm the thermal compound and twisted the CPU off there was 2 bent pins on the bottom so after seeing that and having a mild panic attack i slightly pushed them straight and went on with the build.

After putting everything back together and finishing the cable management up I closed the side panel and screwed the acrylic side panel back on and pressed the power button. IT WORKED IT FUCKING WORKED it booted up and has been working perfect for the last week, I was really nervous as this was my first build. I would also like to say thank you to all you guys for helping me put together the part list .

Built my 92yr old Grandfather a PC after I saw the abomination of All-In-Ones he purchased.

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 02:51 PM PST

My 92 year old grandfather is quite adept at computers for his age. He enjoys watching a mega-ton of porn, manipulating photos of bird shit to make it looks like there's a hidden image, and he's writing his first book.

Last week his Toshiba All-in-One with a first gen i3, 4GB's of ram, and a 500gb spinning drive shit the bed. He had multiple viruses and the computer was toast from age. He went out to Microcenter and purchased a Microsoft Refurbished Lenovo All-in-One for $400.

It was a hot pile of garbage. It took 15-20 minutes to boot into the operating system after every restard. It had an i5 laptop processor, 8GB's of ram, and a 500gb spinny drive. Garbage. Garbage. Garbage.

I took it back and I built him this instead. Since he turned 92 just a couple weeks ago and I didn't get him a gift I went ahead and covered the difference in cost for this PC instead. I am finishing it up tonight! He's not going to know what to do with himself. Yes, I am putting on malwarebytes and a better anti-virus software so he can't gunk it up. I will also put a direct link to pornhub as a desktop icon so he can safely watch his porn.

How did I do? Here are some pics of the parts!

EDIT: The computer kept crashing under a load (ha) and I'm now understanding how much overkill this is. Swapping to the items listed below. 2700x to G5400. New MB. 8gb single stick to 4gb dual channel.

Did I miss something? My PC seems to under-perform

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 02:07 PM PST

First of all, here are my specs:

Processor: Intel Core i7-7700K 4.2GHz Processor
Graphics: Asus GeForce GTX 1070 STRIX 8GB
Motherboard: Asus STRIX H270F GAMING ATX
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-3000 16GB

My computer doesn't seem to be performing to expectations. I just updated the BIOS (it was way out of date), and all other drivers are up-to-date but it doesn't seem to help. I just ran a 3DMark benchmark for Time Spy and got a score of 5979. I compared it with similar systems (same CPU and GPU) and benchmarks run in the last year, and my score is just below average. (Here is a comparison of my system with the top benchmark) Clock speeds seem to either be similar or, in some cases, mine are higher. Is there something I missed when building the system? Something I didn't install or something I did improperly? I need some help troubleshooting why my system is barely average. Or am I just expecting too much? I mentioned clock speeds because I'm not sure if any of these systems are overclocked.

    Thank you for your help!

What should I get for a CPU cooler for a Ryzen 5 3600 that will be used as stock or with light overclocking, that hopefully won't hurt the bank.

My current 4790k is getting long in the tooth and I have some money burning a hole in my wallet. I will be bringing over a 5700XT, Samsung 970 Evo (which I might buy another and RAID 0 for funsies) and a Corsair RM750 2019 edition modular PSU. I play lots of stuff like PUBG, SC2, RDR2 and want to be able to play these games while also running some VMs in the background for some home lab stuff. I want a nice motherboard and don't mind spending for "top of the line". I also require Intel NIC on whatever board I buy.

My main questions center around, how good is the Thermaltake AIO I have there? I'm buying it to match the case. Otherwise I'd buy a corsair but they're all made by asetek anyways right? I don't give two shits about RGB as well and in fact will probably replace the RGB fans with Noctuas or Cougars with excellent bearings in some obnoxious brown/orange throw-up color. So what do you think?

I also have a 1440p 144hz IPS Freesync monitor. The 4790k is going to end up in a NAS doing torrenting and file storage. Probably downclock the hell out of it, install UNRAID and fill it full of SSDs and HDDs. Most of this stuff will be bought at Micro Center as well.

How easy is it to screw up // accidentally damage pc components when installing a new hard drive?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 08:29 AM PST

Hi, I'm new to windows and PC builds and recently spent several weeks picking out, ordering, and watching // reading info on how to build a pc. I spent almost $1,000 on a nice setup, spent hours assembling it all , but when it turned on fans would spin, lights turned on, but the PC would not output to any monitor. I troubleshooted it and found a lot of possible issues from bios update to broken ram sticks to port damage to damaged motherboard.

Luckily I ordered all the parts on amazon and was able to send everything back for a full refund. I purchased instead a high end threadripper // 32gb ram // NVME m.2 SSD // gtx 1660 super pc for over $1,000 from an individual on ebay and it was suppose to come installed with in addition to the ssd a 2tb HDD but it did not. I'm receiving a small partial refund OR replacement for that component, but I'm very scared to install it myself due to my last experience with building a PC and considering the high $ amount I paid for this one.

The ssd it has installed is awesome when it comes to speeds but not large enough for all of the files I need on my PC and I need to somehow add another semi large non SSD hard drive.

Can anyone tell me how safe it is to install a new HDD without damaging, some good resources to do it, or a place to take it to to have one installed (no microcenter in central florida)

    Thanks family..

EDIT: thanks to everyone here for their responses and help. the seller just responded again and told me the drive is actually hidden in a hdd bay under the main area near the power supply and was just never initialized. After taking the case apart I found it and was able to get it working. Thanks everyone for helping me out, and I still hope someday I can build a brand new PC from scratch.

    1080p 144hz vs 1440p 60Hz for gaming/photo editing?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 04:08 AM PST

I know this question has been asked a lot before but the majority of time it's gaming only, whereas I have the Photoshop side of things to consider too.

I'm looking into upgrading my system and in a few months time my monitor.

    I'm currently using a 24inch 1080p 60Hz Dell u2412.

My system usage is 50/50 gaming and photo editing and I'm torn between going for a 24" 1080p 144hz (adaptive sync) or a 27"1440p 60Hz (no sync) A 1440p 144Hz is simply too expensive because I need an IPS panel ( can't edit on a TN).

I play a mixture of games both online FPS type and more story based Witcher 3 sorts and I know that both monitors would have their advantages.

Obviously the 144Hz would be great for 'fast' games, but does it make much of a difference to single player games? Or would the bigger screen real estate and detail be better for those games and Photoshop work?

I'm planning to be using an RTX 2060 Super as my GPU.

I'd really appreciated any input from anyone here.

My budget for the screen will be around £300 UK.

Trying my hand at putting together a budget build/finding used or cheap parts for fun. Does this combination of parts seem plausible?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 12:36 PM PST

So, assuming these parts don't sell before I get to them, I could get all of this: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/theradhatter/saved/#view=vVKf7P plus a case, cpu fan, and more fans, for a total of about $260. Curious if I'd be able to flip it for a profit. What do you think?

The only thing I'm not sure of is if the RAM would work on that particular motherboard since it seems like it only takes up to 2400, but could I scale that RAM stick down to 2400?

Where I live the ryzen 7 2700 is $20 more expensive than the 2600x. Which one should I get? I already have a be quiet pure rock (150W) cooler, and I'll be pairing it with an rx 5600xt

Dual 27" 1440p monitors worth it?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 01:56 PM PST

I sit like an arm's length away from my monitor, so pretty close. I feel like 2 27" screens would be way too big and I would neglect the second monitor. Any thoughts?

Also how is it gaming on a monitor that's slightly off centered to game on? Is it annoying? Both monitors will be slightly tilted so I don't have to move around my chair that much.

White LED on motherboard after every successful boot problem

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 11:24 AM PST

This is my first build so I'm still trying to figure this out. Initially when I first turned on the pc the white light on the motherboard stayed on and no output went to the monitor. Eventually I got this fixed, I really don't know how, and I managed to install Windows, update the bios, update the graphics card, even install steam. Then I put it in sleep mode and went to bed. When I woke up, I had the white led problem again and had to completely reinstall Windows when I got it fixed again (still don't know how). Now I have the white led problem again and I want to see if anybody knows what might be going on. Still no output to monitor.

Build list: RTX 2070 Super Asus x570 motherboard Ryzen 5 3600 Cooler master gold rated 650-watt psu 16 gb ddr4 3200 ram (Corsair) Intel 660 NMVE m.2 SSD

    Any help would be appreciated!

DRAM Error only when dual sticks are in

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 11:18 AM PST

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/jXCn8M

Built it last night and the TUF X570 was giving me a yellow light error for DRAM with my ram in slots A2 & B2 (2nd and 4th slots to the right).

This morning I tried using a single ram within A2 (farthest right). It then posted and I was able to boot, install windows and I'm typing this through the new comp.

I then tried every slot individually and it booted each time. I tested both individual RAM sticks into single slots and it booted.

As soon as I plug in both sticks, I get the yellow light.

Any ideas? I'm at a loss for what to do.

Everything is new except the peripherals and the hard drives. The monitors worked just fine this morning on my old PC. The QNIX monitor is the one having issues. Its only input is DVI and the GPU only has one HDMI out and three Displayports out so I'm using this adapter for the QNIX and a regular HDMI cable for the Samsung. Radeon Settings shows it is connected with via DVI-D. I have not activated windows yet.

    Micro Build

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 01:23 PM PST

Was wanting to build a new PC. Want to do a micro build and need some suggestions on parts and a case. Budget is probably anywhere around $600 to $1000. Biggest question is should I go with a 1080 or 2060 gfx card?

I need help building a new PC

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 01:10 PM PST

So, I would like to get a new PC (desktop) for about 600-700 € (750 $). I am not exactly a computer guy, I am familiar with some base components and which are powerful and which are not. Currently I am using my 8 years old NTT PC equipped with i5 (don't remember the series, can't check it for now) along with GeForce GTX 550 Ti. This is paired with 1 TB HDD and 12 GB of RAM. It perfectly satisfies my needs, I used to game a lot but now I don't. However I would like to have some more power available when I need it. This setup for me is very fast and fluid for it's age, I can't really complain. However I am in need of new computer.

Basicaly, I would like to have the same experience with my new up-to-date setup. I guess that GTX 550 Ti is even a bit too powerful for my current needs and I am not interested in sophisticated graphics card (FYI, Beam.NG is the most demanding title I am interested in and 550 Ti keeps up). I wouldn't like to have an integrated one as AFAIK these are too weak for smooth performance. What do you guys recommend? In terms of processor, my friend advised me to go for AMD Ryzen 5 series instead of i5, do you agree?

Also, I would like to pair it with 8 or 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. What else is important to me are 2x USB ports on the front of the case (2.0 or 3.0) and decent sound from my setup. I am no audiophile and I use like 100 $ speakers but I'd like the sound to be clear and crisp.

Please tell me if I should add anything, I am kind of newbie here. Thanks in advance!

My 3.0GHz RAM runs at 2.1GHz? Is this normal?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 01:09 PM PST

So, on CPU-Z my DRAM Frequency is 1064.1. So, in DDR4 terms that's 1064X2=2128 right? My ram is supposed to run at 3.0GHz.

I have the XMP Profile1 enabled on the bios and I have 2X8GB ram sticks(on dual channel). Is the speed normal? Is it like that because I have 2 RAM sticks instead of one?

Edit: In case this is relavant: The ram is G.Skill Aegis, CPU Ryzen 7 2700, Mobo DS3H

Edit2: Updating the bios seems to fix the issue, at least for me(and for now). I enabled the XMP profile and now CPU-Z displays a speed of 1497(so about 2994) as it should. Hope this helps someone with the same issue.

Some AAA games have been crashing on my PC. Time to upgrade or is there another solution?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 10:56 AM PST

    Troubleshooting Help:

    What is your parts list?

Intel Core i5-6500 CPU @ 3.20GHz (stock sink)

    R9 390X 8GB

    8 GB RAM

    (Should be all that's relevant)

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I would like to preface this with the statement that I am probably living proof that any bumbling idiot can build a PC. I knew enough to build a decent machine, but in terms of knowing how to manage what I've built, it's been nothing but confusion. Patience with my ignorance may be required.

I've been getting constant crashes to desktop while attempting to play Battlefront 2. Previously, the game has been able to run for some time before crashing and I made it through a good chunk of the campaign without issue but now it crashes on load. This is the worst I have had it, but I previously experienced a lot of crashes (sometimes freezing, requiring a hard restart, sometimes crashing to desktop) from Battlefield 5, and rare crashes to desktop from The Witcher 3. I am concerned my system is not good enough to run these games, but if there is a workaround without an upgrade, I am anxious to find one. I am aware that 8GB RAM may likely be inadequate for most new games and that an i5 generally doesn't cut it either. If this is incorrect, I would be glad to hear it.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

My GPU drivers were already inadequate for BF2 and had to be updated to even launch the game, so that's a fix I've already tried.

I followed instructions for a clean boot to remove taxing background programs, but no dice.

I lowered the settings of BF2, turned off Vsync and DX12, and set anti-aliasing to low. This did not work.
