    Simple Questions - February 03, 2020

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 04:16 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

    First full AMD RGB build

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 09:04 AM PST

    Hi,

Just wanted to share my latest build.

It's hard to get decent pictures of a blacked out glass window case, but irl I'm so pleased with the result.

Took a bit of trial and error and some research to get the entire RGB setup synced with MSI mystic light but today I finally put in the last piece.

    Speclist:

    • Fractal Vector RS
    • MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX
    • Ryzen 3700X
    • G.Skill Trident Z Neo 3600 C16 (16GB)
    • Sapphire Radeon RX5700 XT
    • Corsair RM750x
    • 1 M. 2 SSD and 2 Sata SSD
    • Scythe Kaze Flex RGB PWM 1800 140mm
    • DeepCool Gamer Storm RGB Convertor

GTX 1660 Super or RX 5600 XT for $100 more?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 07:37 AM PST

Please help me decide between these two GPUs. I'm not sure if the extra $100 is worth it or not considering the driver issues that AMD is having and the fact that the MSI card is the 12Gbps version of the RX 5600 XT:

MSI Radeon RX 5600 XT Mech OC - $409

GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER OC - $309

I'm building a small form factor system so am limited to GPU's that are 266 mm or less (SG13 case), which is why I'm looking at these specific cards. It'll have a Ryzen 5 3600 CPU and the display is a 42" HDTV 1080p 60Hz. Advice very much appreciated!

Is $1150 too much to spend on a pc for my age?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 03:24 AM PST

Hi, So I'm pretty new to pc gaming (only been playing for about a year and a half) and I've decided I want to upgrade to something that'll last me a long time. Im currently looking at a pretty nice build with an RTX 2070 super and R5 3500 but the total is around $1150 AUD. My brother who got me into the PC masterrace says that it's a great idea to upgrade (from gtx 1050 and i3) but my parents both think it's too much money for a 14 year old to spend and, well, they don't really know anything about computers and I think they're worried at spending so much on "a bunch of machinery". How can I convince them it's worth spending that money? Unless you have a counter argument? Any comment is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Quick question regarding b450 mobo and m.2

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 05:49 AM PST

This is my parts list as of right now, I'll be ordering tonight after work! I'm very excited, my only concern is that the motherboard might not support m.2 SSDs. Would anyone be able to let me know if it would work? I can always go up to an x570 mobo for the speed, I'm just trying to keep a budget.

Upgraded cases yesterday to a Corsair 220T RGB, encountering 100% CPU usage on all cores while running no programs. Can cases do that? I’m super confused

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 08:44 AM PST

Went from running 25-50% CPU usage on all cores with an old case even playing games, to 100% CPU usage at the desktop and the only thing I changed is the case. Would the front IO on the case be causing this? Super confused.

I accidentally applied customer fan-curve without needing to launch MSI Afterburner, then I removed my GPU and re-installed it, now it is gone and I need to launch Afterburner every-time!

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 07:07 AM PST

I have no idea how I did it initially, I own Gigabyte 1650 Super Windforce OC 4GB GDDR6 card. It has that lame 3D ACTIVE FAN BS that turns of the fan when GPU is under load but my GPU hits 50C at idle which I don't want it to be all the time.

I started by selecting custom fan curve option and disabling auto fan management on Afterburner, which was at 0% as default.

Then I went ahead and created nodes on the graph, hit applied and hit the tick mark on after burner's UI. It applied that curve and kept my fans running even when I started my machine without the help of afterburner running initially or what so ever.

But then, i removed my GPU to clean and re-installed it, now the automatic fan-curves disappeared. I have to launch AB all the time to make to make the fans spin. It wont pick up automatically like i did earlier.

Is there a way to permanently apply the fan-curve without needing to launch or make an app run all the time?

Latest Build Completed... It wasn't supposed to be this outrageous

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 01:17 PM PST

    https://imgur.com/a/vqmHRsI

This build started off because I wanted to build an air-cooled powerful PC. That eventually turned into a full hard tube custom loop.

I started with the the NH-D15 Chromax. I heard all of the rave reviews about it and decided to give it a shot. Next I decided to go with an Asus Strix 2080ti because it has great cooling and it matched the D15 chromax. I ended up buying 2 of them for the build. So now I had to decide on a platform... I need something with enough pcie lanes to support the NVLinked gpu's and the NVME drives that I planned on using. Cascade Lake-X was perfect for it. The only 10 series that I could find available for some reason was the i9-10940x. This CPU is actually great for a good balance between price, core count, speed, and cpu lanes. After getting everything into the case (MSI Gungnir) I realized there is not enough space for two huge cards like the strix without choking them. So I moved to the tried and true Lian Li 011D XL. With the new case I discovered that EK made a distro plate/pump/res combo specifically for it. Thats what led to it going from a non-rgb air cooled build to a full RGB custom loop.

Cpu is at 4.5ghz all cores Ram is at 3600mhz 860 QVO are Raid 0 FireCuda is Boot Drive 7600p is game/scratch drive

Im thinking about returning the omega for the encore to get the extra pcie lanes, and ram support.

    1440p 144Hz build at or under $1600?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 12:41 PM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming - namely in preparation for Overwatch 2. Would like the machine to be capable for other newer games as well.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1440p 144Hz minimum 60FPS but hopefully higher FPS at highest graphics settings.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    $1600

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

I've got two builds - one AMD and one Intel:

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I'd love to get a build together at or under $1600 for 1440p 144Hz including OS and monitor. I've included a 24 inch monitor here that I think works (my understanding is that Nvidia cards are now able to use Freesync?). In the Intel build I upgraded RAM and hard drive from the PC part picker recommendations to more reputable brands. I did not do this for the AMD build. My Main questions are

    1) Is my video card/monitor selection okay? I am presuming that I can enjoy the benefits of 1440p/144Hz on my main monitor while having an older crappy 1080p one as my secondary?

    2) Are there places I can shave off money while still meeting my goals on either build? I am not married to Intel or AMD, just whatever one better fits my purpose.

    3) Will I see a performance difference from 3000/3200/3600 RAM? Which is the best choice?

    4) Should I really bother upgrading parts to like Samsung or G. Skill or is this a good place to save money?

    5) Any advice for someone who has last built a computer in 2011/12.

Help building a gaming PC comparable to the Xbox Series X?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 12:30 PM PST

    Hello internet,

With the upcoming console generation coming out and the direction Xbox is taking things, it seems to me that the smarter move would be to build a gaming PC since all the MS studio exclusives will release on PC as well as Xbox.

I thought some of you gurus could point me in the right direction. What motherboard, cpu, gpu should I look for if I wanted to build something on par with the next gen Xbox? Any other suggestions or advice on the topic would be greatly appreciated.

    Question on grounding myself

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 10:54 AM PST

I'm going to be building my first pc and I'm wondering how to properly ground myself.

I've heard that you should plug in your PSU to a wall socket and connect it to your case with the switch at the back off. Then keep touching an exposed metal piece on the case or connect an anti- static wrist strap (which I have).

Do I need to have the switch at the wall socket on or off when grounding myself? Thanks

Opinion on first build? Budget = $1300

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 07:47 AM PST

Hey guys! I've been saving up spare money for years and have finally decided to build my first PC. My budget is $1300. I am relatively new to PC building and was wondering if the part list I've compiled below is good. If there's anything I am over/under-spending on please let me know. I plan on using this PC for common school tasks, some programming, and to play games like Ark and Cyberpunk when it releases. Additionally, I don't mind going over the budget a little bit if you guys think that there is an upgrade I need to make. I want to have a dual monitor set up with this PC and I already have a Acer SB220Q bi monitor as well as a 500 gb external Samsung SSD. I do not plan on over clocking this PC so I was wondering if the default cooler that comes with the Ryzen 5 3600 will be enough or if I need to spend extra on a 3rd party cooler. Thanks for the time!

(Sorry if the formatting is weird and language seems too formal/informal I never ever posts on Reddit and have no idea how this works)

Need advice with building PC, are these parts even compatible?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 01:53 PM PST

    Hey there!

I was planning on doing an upgrade of my current rig that is pretty outdated and was looking around in PCpartpicker and I was wondering if any of you are noticing a glaring issue with this config I have picked.

Budget is not a huge deal but im not really willing to drop $1000 on this, but I can always flex a bit and save. My salary is shit ATM but i can always save $100-$200 every month so if it's necessary i'll wait and save.

Worth mentioning is that i already have both storage devices and the GPU in my current rig, so those do not add up toward the total price.

Planning a simultaneous GPU upgrade/swap in two computers, looking for opinions on best path

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 01:44 PM PST

Apologies for any mobile formatting mess. Had a draft typed up on PC, but now 2 hours into a vet visit, I'm taking a break to type it up again.

My PC currently has a GTX 1080. I have a 144Hz, 1440p monitor, and my most played game is World of Warcraft, although I do play other AA/AAA games. On the max settings, I get an average of 80fps in WoW, but would like higher. I don't know that a 2080 Super is enough of an upgrade for the cost, so that's where the swap comes in (last paragraph for tl;dr)

My girlfriend has my ~10 year old build, with some upgrades here and there (SSD + 24GB RAM). She's currently using a GTX 970, and looking for a slightly higher FPS at 1080p. We just built a PC for a friend, and went with a Red Devil RX-5600 XT (with OC BIOS flash). That's getting around 90fps at 1080p.

She's wondering if that same card ($309) would be good for her. According to some benchmark sites, it looks to be ~60% upgrade in performance. The 2060 Super is ~90% ($400). The GTX 1080 is ~110% boost from her 970.

Long-ish story short, would it benefit both of us for her to buy my ASUS ROG GTX 1080 OC, and for me to put that cash towards a 2080 Super? Or does the cost difference not benefit me, and she should just go with a newer card alone? She eventually wants to get a 144Hz monitor, but stay at 1080p.

Building a work/light gaming PC with an existing motherboard and GPU

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 01:42 PM PST

    Hello friends.

I'm building a PC for a friend who just needs it to play indie games and run apps like photoshop. I'm trying to save money and have a leftover motherboard and GPU I was hoping to use. I know this will limit the build, but I just wanted to make sure it'll be usable for someone's work PC.

    IO shield blocks ethernet cable

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 01:26 PM PST

I think my IO shield blocks the port for my ethernet cable. Is there an easy solution that doesn't require taking my whole build apart?

First time building. Want to be able to play and stream off the same PC.

Mostly Rocket League, and maybe CS:GO.

The 1660 Super is $50 more than the 1660. Worth the upgrade?

Also, I'm a little unsure about the case and PSU, let me know if there are better alternatives.

    Any thoughts/concerns/feedback is appreciated.

    1080p 144hz Upgrade

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 10:50 AM PST

I'm looking to upgrade from my current i7 4790k, RX 480 8 GB, 16 GB DDR3 build. I mainly play Quake Champions (hopefully Diabotical soon), CSGO, and do audio rendering/composition on the side.

The goal of my build is to be able to maintain the 144hz while streaming games.

Can anyone tell me if the RTX 2070 Super is overkill? Been thinking about getting an RTX 2060 Super instead, as I'm afraid that the 2070 is a but too much.

I'm also trying to stay as close to $1200 as possible, which currently isn't happening. Don't mind stretching, just need to buy other things too; looking to make the build less expensive if possible.

Note: Low profile RAM is a must, as I already own a be quiet! Dark Rock pro cooler

    Does this build check out?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 09:16 AM PST

I researched quite a bit and this seems to be the best price/performance/aesthetics. Any suggestions?
