XFX 5700 Noctua edition (i put Noctua fans on my 5700)

Default fans are so loud, I removed and slapped Noctua on my 5700 DD running at 1980mhz, 1.05V. Both fans are runs at 1300rpm and 1100rpm max. Get similar temperatures at muuuuch lower noise level.

This isn't meant to OC, for that, I'll need higher rpm fans, I just wanted less noise coming from my computer.

Making an old PC into a modern gaming PC

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 10:30 AM PST

So here's the deal. I don't have a lot of money. I have an Asus I got back in 2016 that has 16 GB of RAM, a 2TB hard drive, an i5 4460s processor, and I put a Chinese made gtx 960 I got off of eBay like 2 years ago. It's okay for games, but the card is a knockoff cheap thing and sometimes the games I play look "eh" at best.

I don't need a monster PC with 4K visuals, insane frames per second, of even ultra settings. I'd be happy with medium/high settings at 1080p and a smooth 80FPS. What card should I toss in to ensure my gaming experience is a good one?

I know you'll probably tell me to buy a gaming PC or build one, but budget is tight right now. Would games run if I toss a 1660 super or TI into this machine? I play Elder Scrolls Online, Neverwinter, DOOM 2026, WoW, Diablo 3, Battlefield 5, Fallout 4 and would branch out into other kinds of games.

Will I be fine? What do you guys think?

I totally dont understand how to choose RAM.

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 09:09 AM PST

The longer I informed myself the more I got confused.

I need 16gb of DDR4 Ram. I dont care about RGB. I can spend up to 80€. (≈87USD)

mainboard: MSI X470 Gaming Plus Max

    Is 4x4gb smart?

    Is 2x8gb 3200mhz CL16 a good choice?

A Kit i was interested in says 2x8gb 3200Mhz 16CL (16-18-18-38). What does (16-18-18-38) mean? Is it scam?

Will my mainboard (MSI X470 Gaming Plus Max) support this Ram?

Is an i7 9700k even worth considering?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 09:47 AM PST

I'm going to be upgrading my processor very soon and I was wondering if the state of processors were good enough to upgrade and wondering if there was any reason to consider upgrading to an i7 9700k considering how good the ryzen chips have been. Would love to hear everyone's thoughts.

AMD Ryzen 3600 CPU Running Hot with Stock Wraith Spire

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 06:33 PM PST

Posting this here in case any other first time builders have the same issue I did and go looking around Reddit for an answer.

So after building my first ever PC this weekend I was a bit concerned when I saw my 3600 on my B450 Max MOBO was running at about 55-60°C at idle and around 80°C when running a game for about 30 minutes.

I thought maybe the stock CPU fan (a Wraith Spire) wasn't on tight enough so I opened up my case to check it out. Turns out the backplate on the MOBO had fallen clean off and the CPU fan was just hanging there from the stickiness of the thermal paste on the CPU!

Fixed it and temps came down to about 45° at idle and 60-65° under load.

IDK if this is the right sub, but I need help finding some components, I don't know what to look for

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 02:07 PM PST

I would like to buy a (preferably black ribbon style) CPU power extension, as the hardwired to my power supply is too short for good cable management. I just don't know where to look to find one. I also wanted some case RGB lights, but don't know where to look or what to search. Also, how do they connect? Do they connect through a USB header or with an RGB header? Thanks!

New Built Computer - Additional Fans & Placement Question - Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 01:47 PM PST

    Hey,

I built a computer yesterday and set it up and everything is going great, except I dont think I planned out the fan requirements. The case didn't come with any fans and I didn't realize until I opened the box. I set everything up and now I am thinking about fan placement and not really sure what to order and how to set it up.

Case: Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic ATX

The computer has been idling around 48 and then 55 while downloading a game on steam. I think I need more fans, as I haven't tired under load yet. What do you think ? Do I need more airflow?

What I think would be best, are 2 fans at the bottom for intake and 2 fans at the top for exhaust. One fan pointing towards the GPU and another fan over by the radiator.

Next question, what fans should I be buying? I want high quality, QUIET fans. I don't want a noisy computer. Maybe I only need 2 fans total. I was told Noctua fans are really good.

    Fan (noctua): https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07CG2PGY6

Here are a couple pictures to give you ideas on the case

What's the best USB wifi adapter I could get for around $40?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 10:26 AM PST

I've been using ethernet since I've had my build but I recently switched houses and ethernet is no longer an option. My graphics card covers the PCI-E slot so unfortunately I cannot use that.

Seems as if my only option is to go USB. Any recommendations for anything I could find on Amazon? Thanks!

Portable Powerhouse Build - An ITX, Ryzen 3800X, 2070 Super Build, looking for input.

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 10:45 AM PST

Hi all, I've been working on a build and I think I just about have it where I want it. I'm just looking for some extra eyes and input before I start working on acquiring the parts. I've been in the Simple Questions threads for a while, but I wanted to make one big post since it's no longer simple.

The goal with this build is to have a semi-portable powerhouse build. I live in a very long home, that's just how they are in this particular US city. I live with my partner, and as such have wanted to share games with them. The living room and the office, where my current PC lives, are on opposite sides of the house. I've tried to make due with a Steam Link, but nearly every time I've tried it's ended in frustration and not being able to play the game. I also have a multitude of co-op games on Steam that I've just not been able to share due to these issues.

Since my current build is aging out of usefulness, I've decided to bite the bullet and build a new PC, as cutting edge as I can afford. My goal with the new build is to have a 4K editing/gaming hybrid machine that I can easily move from room to room, only needing to connect power and display and minimal setup time.

Specs-wise, I want 1440p ~120Hz in the office (hence the new monitor in the build), and 4K 60Hz in the living room. The PC will largely be used for gaming, though I do pick up some video editing work from time to time due to the ebb and flow nature of workloads in my main career. That's largely why the build has the beefy CPU and RAM.

I figured I'd spend about ~$2500 on a new build, but obviously if I can save money here or there without sacrificing power or reliability by swapping out a couple of components, that's great too. I also plan on sitting on this build for a few months and buying parts on sales when possible. I know in particular the monitor drops ~$70 periodically.

A few concerns I still have are:

    • Do I have enough pins on this motherboard for my fans? If not, what splitter do I need, and will my mobo still be able to control them individually?

    • How exactly does my monitor set up? I can't seem to find any info on what exactly the extra HDMI ports do, as it says it only supports one input (presumably DisplayPort). I'm hoping I can route audio through HDMI permanently so I can eliminate any analog ports from normal use. Since the build is meant to go back and forth, analog ports will wear and becoming inoperable over time. Plus, I want to just plug and play power and display when moving between rooms.

    • Outside of Black Friday, what does the elasticity of prices generally look like for parts? PPP doesn't have interactive price charts so it's hard to tell, and I don't want to wait until November to build. Hoping to build in late April, actually.

    • Are there any small oversights that I may have made, like needing to order extra SATA cables or screws? I'm assuming if I hit "buy," everything I'll need will just arrive, which is why I went through the trouble of adding thermal paste to my build chart. It's been a long time since my last scratch build and I have no idea what manufacturers are sending with products these days.

Possible really stupid question about upgrading my graphics card.

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 02:29 PM PST

Hello r/buildapc, I have been thinking about purchasing a 1660 super to replace my 1060 3gb. Is this card going to be better than my old 1060 simply because of the doubled v-ram, or is it a slower card? Also I was hoping this card would bump up my fps past 60, do I also need to upgrade my cpu (i5-8400 2.8 GHz) to get to 144hz? Thank you for all your help, I'm very clueless when it comes to this stuff.

Opinion on pc I may buy later this year

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 02:20 PM PST

Hello, I'm going to be getting a new pc later this year. I already know how to build and pc and everything, it's pretty easy. So that's not the question here. I was mainly asking the opinion on it. The CPU and motherboard choice. Should I wait until the new CPUs come out this year? Or should I just buy the current line of AMD CPUs? Here is the build, Thanks. The only reason I chose the case was because of the ll120s. Those alone cost $100+. So its basically like I'm getting a $40 case with an open tempered glass panel. I would choose the lian li, but I'm going air cooling and also I would have to buy fans.

PC freezes at Windows splash screen

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 02:05 PM PST

    Title says it all

    Specs;

    i7 5820k

    Gigabyte Phoenix X99 SLI

    32GB DDR4 GSkill Ram (Also XRL8 16GB)

    RTX 2080

    Storage doesnt matter, tried everything

    EVGA 1000G+ (overkill I know)

PC has been going solid for about 4-5 years but the other day it wouldn't boot so I replaced power supply and it booted for 2 days but programs would crash and I would come back to my computer after a couple hours and it would be off but never turned off while using it. So PSU was brand new so I assume it works.

    Heres what I've tried:

    • Replacing Ram with brand new XLR8 kit

    • Enabling/disabling Intel rapid storage

    • Enabling/disabling fast boot

    • 1 Ram stick / 2 Ram sticks

    • Kali Linux live off USB (froze)

    • Windows media creation tool (froze on spinny dots)

    • Legacy boot off my windows 7 bootdisk (froze at windows flag also was known working on this PC previously)

Honestly not sure where to go from here other than replace the motherboard WHICH doesn't really make sense because X99 motherboards are $400 so that leaves me with upgrading to modern hardware which makes me mad because I was happy with the performance of my current hardware. Anything I'm missing? Please help I'm broke... from buying all this hardware :) :(

Edit: also reset CMOS and loaded optimized defaults on BIOS while the PC was unplugged and did a full power drain by holding the power button while it was unplugged

[Motherboard] Mini-ITX build. GIGABYTE B450 I vs ASUS ROG Strix B450-I

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 11:42 AM PST

CPU I will be using is the 3700x.

Concerns of mine are Vrm cooling, I also plan to do some overclocking in the future (nothing too crazy).

This build will get hot as my build is very small so cooling is quite relevant. I will be using the M.2 at the front as well.

Ive heard that x570i boards are best because they have a bios update which fixes the idle activity and boosting, this helps with idle temps and performance underload, only flaw is an extra $100 for one of those.

Budget PC GTX 980 in Optiplex 3020

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 11:31 AM PST

I'm trying to build a very budget PC currently, and I'm wondering the best parts so that there isn't much of a bottleneck and everything is compatible. I have a gtx 980 evga, and I was looking at getting an optiplex 3020 minitower with i5-4590 and 8gb of ddr3 ram. I know I will need a new PSU as well.

Does this sound alright? Or does the GPU not fit in the optiplex minitower? Thanks for the help!
