Posted: 26 Jan 2020 04:44 AM PST Last year, when I built my new rig, I bought a 144Hz monitor and, thanks to this lovely community, managed to actually set it correctly in games. However, I wasn't blown away by the increased refresh rate. I was more impressed by the jump in resolution (from 1080p to 1440p). Seeing 144FPS in games certainly made feel like I belonged to the PC master race, but I couldn't justify the "better experience". This weekend I reinstalled Windows 10 to try to clear some problems I was having. After installing everything back I felt that something was off. The mouse seemed to lag on the screen. Moving windows around was jittery. Animations seemed slow. After debugging for a while, I realized that I hadn't set the monitor back to 144Hz in the driver settings after reinstalling Windows 10. I opened nVIDIA Control Panel, flipped the switch and pressed OK. Oh. My. God. So smooth. No more jittery movements. Everything was flying. While I couldn't justify 144Hz before, now I can clearly say that it is superior. TL;DR: enjoyed 144Hz for a year without fully appreciating it, went down to 60Hz this weekend by mistake, couldn't believe the difference. Posted: 25 Jan 2020 02:01 PM PST I imagine using a SSD for OS and using 1 or 2 other SSDs for games and such would result in better loading times. What are the pros and cons of just not using an HDD at all? Is the difference between SSD and HDD actually large enough in games to justify the cost difference? Can I build a gaming pc with 500$? Posted: 26 Jan 2020 01:58 PM PST The title is self explanatory. I have a ps4 and s laptop I currently play on. If I were to build a pc I would only be able to build it with a 500$ dollar budget... BUT I have a 1080... something, I'm not sure exactly what's it's called, but I can use 500$ for all the other parts [link] [comments]
STILICHO: 1440p/144hz G-Sync gaming rig [Build Complete] Posted: 26 Jan 2020 07:00 AM PST Feels good to be finally done! I mostly lurk but I've gained so much good info here over the past month of research that I wanted to share my finished build with you all. PHOTO ALBUM VIDEO OF RGB GOODNESS OVERLY LONG BACKGROUND INFO BECAUSE I LIKE TO HEAR MYSELF TYPE I woke up on Christmas morning 2019 to find my beloved old gaming rig from 2014 unable to boot; it just looped repeatedly. After more than a week of troubleshooting, I narrowed it down to the motherboard failing and took it apart, selling the disparate components to a friend. More info on my old rig here for anyone who's interested in some backstory. So, long story short, I decided to build a brand new, all-out gaming rig suitable for 1440p/144hz gsync gaming with the goal of maintaining 90+ frames per second on high settings. My goal with this PC is to keep me gaming for 6+ years like my last PC did. I'll plan to upgrade the GPU in about 3 years, and see how long I can ride these base components until then. Second to gaming is aesthetics. I don't enjoy building (too nerve-wracking), but I do enjoy having built — doubly so when the end product looks nice. I've never been crazy about RGB so I instead went with a mostly black/gray/white aesthetic, with touches of RGB provided by my keyboard, mouse, RAM sticks, and CPU cooler. As far as personal tweaks, I've added custom sleeved cables from CableMod that I've been very happy with. They're of a far higher quality than the old Corsair cables I had in my last rig. And I purchased some black target-marker stickers from Amazon for a few dollars to put on the back of the fans so they don't have the ugly fine-print stickers showing. I also purchased a custom GPU backplate from JMMods because I hate how the exposed backplate of the stock EVGA RTX 2080 Super Black looks. Everything went exceptionally and I'm extremely happy. Lastly, I'd like to thank all of you users here on /r/buildapc and over on PCPartPicker who always respond to my questions and comments on your builds this past month or so. You all are the best. Thank you for always taking time out of your day to help others to learn. Cheers. PCPARTPICKER: https://pcpartpicker.com/b/sbWD4D PART REVIEWS CPU Intel Core i9-9900KS 4 GHz 8-Core Processor I'm sure this will be the most contentious choice of my build. I know folks love the new Ryzen CPUs, and that they're significantly cheaper, but for my purposes (purely high resolution, high framerate single-player gaming) my research continually informed me that the I9-9900 CPU from Intel suited me best. And as a nervous nelly who prefers not to mess with overclocking, I was prepared to pay the premium to have Intel overclock the chip to 5.0ghz straight from the factory. Thus far, it's been performing admirably, and I have no complaints. For others it may not be worth the extra cost, but for me I believe it was. CPU Cooler Corsair H150i PRO 47.3 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler Corsair can be pretty hit-or-miss with me, but this component has kept my CPU under 60°C while gaming thus far. I'm not the biggest fan of how the RGB cover looks — it resembles cheap plastic — but it gets the job done and adds some color. Motherboard Asus ROG MAXIMUS XI HERO (WI-FI) ATX LGA1151 Probably another overkill component on my part, but I'm a huge fan of Asus' BIOS and I wanted a board that had wi-fi and bluetooth onboard. The Aura RGB features are also a nice touch of color in what are mostly monochrome internals. Memory Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 Gorgeous RGB and it gets the job done. Nice, solid build quality. Storage Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive Another premium item. It cost me a pretty penny, but there's nothing like a PC that goes from off to Windows log-in screen in fewer than 10 seconds. And the 2TB storage space is more than enough for my purposes. Video Card EVGA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER 8 GB BLACK GAMING Despite my splurging in other areas, I settled for the 2080 Super rather than going full 2080 TI. I simply couldn't justify spending the extra $500 for the TI over the Super. So far, the Super has been performing well enough for me to hit my gaming goals. My last card was a GTX 1080 so I'm enjoying this upgrade so far. Case Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic Probably my single favorite component of the new build. This case is utterly beautiful, impeccably designed, and a joy to build in. The cable management options are superb, the PSU mount is excellent, and the way the separate panels fit together to close everything up is perfect. Every intake port has a fan filter. And the glass and brushed aluminum are of exceptional quality. This is an A+ case and I'll probably never get rid of it unless it breaks. Superb design and excellent quality materials. I'm now a Lian Li fanboy. Coming from a Corsair 750D made me realize how poor that case was in comparison to the PC-O11 Dynamic. In the 750D I dealt with a cheap plastic window, useless drive bays, and heat pooling near the GPU. And it cost me $~60 more than the O11 Dynamic did. This is a great case. I highly recommend it with no qualms. Power Supply Corsair 850 W 80+ Platinum It's a power supply. The least glamorous component in the entire thing. It gets the job done and it's quiet, and it's got enough wattage that I can run SLI in the future if I wish. Good enough for me. Operating System Microsoft Windows 10 Home OEM 64-bit A hold-over from my previous build. Not much to say. It's Windows. It's got tons of annoying bloatware and useless features tacked on, but it's a necessary evil. Case Fans (6x) be quiet! SilentWings 3 PWM 50.5 CFM 120 mm For a while I considered going with RGB fans but eventually decided against it as I believed it would be a little too much RGB for my tastes. These are great fans. I've used them before with a BeQuiet air cooler and I'm a fan of them (no pun intended). I love the solid black look, which goes with my aesthetic scheme for this build. These move a lot of air so they get loud when the machine is under load, but there's no avoiding that. They don't whine, the mounts are solid rubber and prevent any rattling. They look good, they keep the internals cool, and the price was reasonable. 9 fans is definitely overkill, but I'm way too anal to leave all of the fan brackets in the PC-O11 Dynamic empty. So I filled them, necessary or not. I also did a simple mod to the fans by putting plain, flat black stickers over the backs so the ugly fan back stickers are no longer showing. I enjoy the nice, clean, plain black look of them far better this way. Monitor #1 Acer Predator XB271HU 27.0" 2560x1440 144 Hz Another hand-me-down from my previous machine. RIt's a great screen. IPS panel is a must for me as I love the richer colors, and G-Sync is fantastic for gaming as well. Great monitor. It was pricey when I bought it a couple of years ago, but well worth the investment in my experience. Monitor #2 Asus VG279Q 27.0" 1920x1080 144 Hz Monitor Carrying this one over from my previous set-up. It serves as a second monitor. I use this one when I can't hit the framerate I want to at 1440p in very new, graphically demanding games. Now that I've built a new rig, it's been relegated as a TV and Movie-streaming monitor so I can run 1080p video natively. Mouse Corsair M65 PRO RGB FPS Wired Optical A carry-over from my previous set-up. Fits my hand best of any mouse I've ever used. My only complaint is that it could use a button or two more than it has, and Mouse5 is a bit too far up the side for my thumb to comfortably reach. Still, I've used far worse. Good mouse. Keyboard Das Keyboard 4Q Soft Tactile MX Brown RGB Smart Mechanical Keyboard Another carry-over from my previous set-up. This is my primary gaming board. It doesn't type as well as my Realforce Topre, but that's not what it's for. The brushed aluminum body is gorgeous and adds a great feeling weight to it, and the RGB is a welcome splash of color onto my desktop. Recommended. Cables CableMod ModMesh Custom Cables for HX850i (Black & White) Very happy with these. They're much more flexible and seem of higher quality than Corsair's own sleeved cables, which I've used in the past. Recommended. GPU Backplate jmmods RTX 2080 Custom GPU Backplate I hated the stock look of the exposed GPU backplate that the RTX 2080 Super Black shipped with, so I googled around and found out that JMMods made custom backplates. Rather than a gaudy, RGB-heavy backplate, I decided to go with just a plain, glossy black backplate to reflect the RGB from the RAM sticks and CPU cooler. I think this was the right choice. — (Edit: Seems the Imgur album I posted was a dead link, let me know if it's not working and I'll try and re-upload) [link] [comments]
Accidentally building a (pretty much) whole new PC Posted: 26 Jan 2020 01:43 AM PST I started my day on hardware swap looking at 1070 for like $175...and was going to buy one, but they decided maybe I'll just step up to a 1080ti, why not. After enough thinking I decided screw it, I don't wanna upgrade for a few more years, I'm just going to get a 2080ti. Well my current i5 3570k isn't gonna cut it, so I ordered an i7 9700k, which mean new mobo, which meant new RAM. It was time, I've been on my 3570k and 970 with DDR3 RAM for over 6 years, at the very least. Needless to say I'm very excited. [link] [comments]

Is it true that frequently deleting stuff from a SSD can damage it? Posted: 25 Jan 2020 04:36 PM PST Bought my first SSD 2 months ago, and because it's only 480 GB and I play a lot of games, I have to constantly delete 1 game to install another. Can this damage my SSD? If that's true, what will happen, like how do I know if my ssd is dying? [link] [comments]
I finally finished my first build Posted: 26 Jan 2020 10:46 AM PST Thanks to everyone here who helped me before and during the build process. It took about 10 hours and a lot of question asking. How big of a difference will I see from a gtx 970 to a rtx 2070 super? Posted: 26 Jan 2020 08:16 AM PST Like percentage wise. Will it be like a 25% upgrade, or will I see a massive upgrade? Was debating on how much money I should spend. $500 is my price range and seems good, but if you have a better recommendation let me know. Thanks. Potential problems with GPU and low fps (NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER) Posted: 26 Jan 2020 12:18 PM PST Yesterday I made a post about how my PC had less FPS than when I first built it (About 2 weeks after), I ran a benchmark on the PC, I showed that everything seemed fine on my PC, except the GPU and RAM, which were said to be under-preforming. I enabled XMP on the RAM sticks, but not much came out of it. I decided to run a Superposition benchmark on the GPU, to see if it was the source of the problem. The results (4082) seemed to be nearly half of the scores from the comparisons given (When searching NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER). Does the GPU seem like the main issue with my PC? What may I do to solve this? [link] [comments]

Can my old i5 3470 work well with a new vga? Posted: 26 Jan 2020 02:23 PM PST I have an I5 3470 and r9 280 I'm thinking about upgrading my vga to 1650 super. Graphics card overkill and power supply questions Posted: 26 Jan 2020 02:04 PM PST I'm looking to build a new PC (obviously) for gaming and basic productivity (Office suite), and I was looking for feedback on the video card and the power supply. For the video card, is the 8 GB overkill or will it be noticeably better than 4 GB? I'm going from 2 GB on my current machine, if the context helps. For the power supply, I have two questions — (1) I'm planning on doubling my memory and adding another SSD or two in the near future; do I need 650W or can I live with 550W? (2) PC Part Picker has a warning: "The MSI MPG X570 GAMING PLUS ATX AM4 Motherboard has an additional 4-pin ATX power connector but the Corsair CXM 650 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply does not. This connector is used to supply additional 12V current to the motherboard. While the system will likely still run without it, higher current demands such as extreme overclocking or large video card current draws may require it." None of the compatible PSUs seem to have the extra 4-pin power connector. Is there something that I should be looking for here? If anyone has any other feedback, I'd love to hear it, but these are the two things that I'm most concerned about. Thanks in advance!

Replacing my PC build fro m8 years ago. Posted: 26 Jan 2020 02:04 PM PST Hey everyone, I am finally going to build a new PC mainly for gaming and some hobby graphics stuff. My last PC was built 8 years ago right before my daughter was born and I became disabled. I'm planning on $1000 budget and being as I'm on a strict home budget I want to try and reuse as much as I can from the current system like my case and my mechanical HDD. The case I have is a Cooler Master HAF 912 and I want to make sure it will accommodate current technology. My mechanical is an old Western Digital 2 TB HDD but I plan on getting an SSD. Any help or advice is appreciated, Thanks [link] [comments]
Posted: 26 Jan 2020 01:57 PM PST Hey everyone, I've spent some time making this list and just wanted some advice. I already have the SSD and case since they seemed like pretty safe bets. RAM might be the main thing to decide on. I have a couple HDDs with at least a TB each on them, so I don't think I need to worry about storage anytime soon lol
