This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

I am upgrading my monitor to a 240hz monitor, as a result I am looking to upgrade my motherboard and CPU in order to be able to reach 240fps. I have been eyeing the i7 8700k. I mostly play CPU intensive games, so I'm also looking to swap to a z series board such that I can oc, though I'm not gonna be pushing the CPU too much, just to get to 240fps.

Any insight as to if the 8700k is a fine upgrade, what motherboard I could get or even if I should upgrade different components is much appreciated. I am trying to stay within a $500 dollar budget. Thanks for any help.

Edit: I am doing 240hz 1080p. **To clarify, the build above is my CURRENT build.

Edit 2: I should have specified, the reason for my upgrade is Overwatch and I really don't play any other games. Thanks for all the responses!

Different brands of Radeon RX 5700 XT???

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 04:46 AM PST

Hey guys I am a newbie when it comes to building PC's as this is my first build. This might sound really stupid but when I search this card up it comes up with different branded boxes like ASUS and PowerColor? The GPU looks the same and it seems to have the same specs so what are the differences if their are any?

    My pc suddenly died.

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 02:19 AM PST

So I was using my pc and it randomly shut down completely and instantly. I'm guessing that the problem is in the psu, but whenever I click the power on button, the light that indicates if the pc is on or off, blinks for a less than a second, but nothing happens. Could it still be a problem with psu, or mother board?

    Edit:

Sorry for not mentioning before, it's a silent desktop pc.

Case- Akasa Euler TX Fanless Mini-ITX

    Power supply- Fortron 90W fanless???

    Sizes- 262.5x215x68.5mm

    Motherboard - Asus PRIME H110T

    Processor- Intel Core i5-6400T, Quad Core, 2.20GHz (2.8GHz Turbo), 6MB, 14nm, 35W

    RAM- 2x8GB 2400MHz Crucial SoDIMM

    SSD Drive- Transcend 240GB, 2.5 "SSD220S, SATA3, TLC 500MB / 480MB / s

Video card- Intel® HD Graphics 530

Sound card- Realtek® ALC887 8-Channel High Definition Audio

    Wireless technologies WI-FI 802.11ac 867 Mbps 2.4 / 5GHz, Dual Antenna, Bluetooth 4.2

    Network card- Realtek® RTL8111H, 1 x Gigabit LAN

    Output / input ports- 2x USB 3.1, 2x USB 2.0 (rear), 4x USB 2.0 (front), 1 x RJ-45, 1 x HDMI, 1 x DisplayPort, 1 x Serial port (COM), microphone and headphone input

The problem with psu is that im guessing it's built in mother board? Because after opening the case the power goes right into the motherboard. So, is it even possible to replace it?

pc underperforming way more than pcs with same specs

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 03:53 AM PST

as you can see here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZVKLw6uav0 in this video it is managing 160 fps+ on low settings on fortnite, when mine struggles to get 100. and i have a rx 570 and a ryzen 3 1300x, so his pc would bottleneck more than mine. i have the updated amd drivers, turned game bar off, turned game mode on. and still no fps change. i really need help! and i also have radeon boost on.

    Ryzen 5 3600 vs. 7 2700X?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 12:25 PM PST

    Netherlands - Here a Ryzen 5 3600 is 200 euros and a 7 2700X is 171.

The 2700X has 8 cores and can be used with B450 motherboards, but i've read that people still recommend the 3600

which is better value? (i use my pc for school and gaming mostly)

    Missing a good CPU. 8700k or 3700x?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 01:58 PM PST

I have an RTX 2070 super, for now I'm running on a 1080p/60 monitor but will upgrade to 1440p eventually. For now I'm super-sampling whenever I can

    My current CPU is a 7700 (not K), which is a 4 core, 8 thread @ 3.6ghz.

Looking for a CPU that I won't need to upgrade for a long time, maybe 4-5 years. But of course, my budget is of max $360

    Wanting to update my monitors

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 09:52 AM PST

To start off, I am not a competitive gamer. If I do play games like CSGO, R6S, RL, and the like, it's usually casual and with friends. I mainly play single-player narrative and RPG titles, and most of them tend to have higher-end graphics and are cinematic (think Skyrim, Halo, Sekiro, Witcher 3, etc.). However, one of them is Hollow Knight (I'm obsessed and am trying to 100% it as well as do some high-end speedruns), and playing that at a higher skill level requires precise platforming and reaction times.

I am in the market for a new monitor setup. I'm looking for a super pretty 4K one to play the pretty games on, and a fast 144hz one to play HK on. I will be buying these over a few months, so I will be saving up and don't mind some of the more expensive ones. What do you guys recommend?

Lastly, for anyone who works with vertically mounted dual monitors, what has been your experience with them? Does your neck get sore if you're using the upper one more than the lower one?

    6 slot riser cable bracket?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 01:05 PM PST

I'm looking for a riser cable that will let me use the bottom slot of my motherboard. I got a really fancy graphics card in an 011D XL and it's a shame I can't see the main part of the cooler. I also have a PCI-e Capture Card which I use a lot and obviously I'd like to keep it.

Does anyone know of a riser I can use?

    Thanks in advance.

Calling all nerds: what thermal paste do you recommend for an i7-9700k running with an EVGA FTW3 2080 Super?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 01:00 PM PST

Getting rid of my GTX 1050 laptop, and doing my first desktop build. I'm pretty well informed for a noob, but I wanna double check everything with the pros. I might do some light overclocking, so I'd like to have a compound capable of handling some light OC temps. Thanks for your time.

Built my first PC and it won’t turn on.

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 05:56 AM PST

Hey everyone, I am a novice at building a PC. I watch some Linus Tech Tips videos and bought myself a budget editing/gaming build. These are the parts as followed

CPU: MPG X570 Gaming Edge WiFi

RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 2x8g

    Graphics: GeForce GTX 1660 TI

    Power Supply: Corsair CX650M

    SSD: Samsung 860 EVO 250GB

    Case: NXZT H510i

The issue is that I have everything hooked up I think properly and I am getting zero power to the motherboard.

It might be a small problem and I might be dumb, but when I shutdown my Windows, everything shuts down, the screens turn off, but the whole PC including lights, fans etc. just keeps running and doesn't turn off. It's completely unresponsive though, as if it's turned off. It's clearly not in sleep or anything similar, and it's also not running any processes as far as I can tell. this doesn't happen consistently but like 6/10 times. I recently installed a new graphics card (RTX 2060S) and this problem didn't start to occur immediately after I installed it (around the 28th of December), but rather at random about a week ago. Old Graphics Card was a RX 590

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem. I googled it but most things were only about the cpu fan staying on and not everything. Tried keyboard and mouse inputs to figure out if I accidentially put it into sleep mode, but it wasn't

    Ram speeds not changing

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 03:08 PM PST

I built this computer about an hour ago and I have been trying to change the ram speeds. Right now the ram is at 2133mhz but it should be at 3000mhz. I have an ASRock b450 HDV motherboard. I went into the OC settings changed the number to 3000mhz then changed it to run the XMP profile. But the ram speed still has not changed. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Son restarted computer a bunch if times

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 03:02 PM PST

So as the titles states, my 1.5 yr old son restarted my computer idk how many times without my knowledge while I was at work. I dont know how long he's been doing this. I just built this computer end of December and just saw him do it for the first time last week, stopped him of course.

Now the computer is freezing within 20 minutes of booting up and being used. Can anyone provide info of what could possibly be wrong?

XFX RX 580 8GB not performing too well after update

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 01:55 PM PST

built a gaming PC at Christmas with help of this sub, all was going well until i updated the graphics card software (radeon) and now games are choppy. and just not right, ive tried messing around with the settings and dunno if its just me or if it i legit have messed up by updating,

i play PES2020, COD MW2 & BO1 Zombies and they ran perfectly fine before and now they don't, if anyone has any idea that would be great.

    SPECS:

    Ram - 16GB

GPU - XFX Radeon RX 580 GTS XXX 8GB

    CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz 6 Core (Socket AM4)

GPU died, what would be a good replacement?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 01:52 PM PST

As the title says, I have computer whose GPU "died". At least, it is not properly displaying the screen and seems to have also caused an issue in windows, but I am going to do clean installation asap.

My question is, what would be a good replacement? It is a R9 390 paired with an i5 4460. Budget is below 250 euros (imagine that the best nvidia card possible is 1660 for this budget where I am from). However, I am wondering if I would be better off buying something slower than an 1660, because of potential bottlenecks. CPU will not be upgraded anytime soon, if ever.

A case to later disguise it as an old tube tv.

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 11:35 AM PST

Alright, so don't judge me. I think it would be hilarious to have a PC that's outwardly disguised as an oldtime tv that were huge and bulky. Honestly I think it would be pretty cool and people wouldn't want to steal it.

I'm just purchasing a new computer case and modding the outsides. Does anyone have any suggestions? Am I just a lunatic? How are veryone's PCs doing today?

    Thanks!

[Troubleshooting] Computer won't boot after hitting power strip

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 01:43 PM PST

Thermaltake Versa H21 Mid Tower Case

    CORSAIR CX Series CX550 550W ATX12V / EPS12V 80

    GeIL EVO POTENZA AMD 16GB (2 x 8GB)

MSI B450-A PRO AM4 ATX Motherboard

    Crucial 1TB MX500 2.5" Internal SSD

    AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz Six-Core AM4

    Radeon™ RX 5700 XT

I was at my computer when I accidentally hit the switch on my power strip while my computer was on and now it won't boot. Fans start up and light on the motherboard blinks on VGA and CPU, although my keyboard and mouse don't light up.

I've tried unplugging the power unit from the power strip, internally unplugging the power unit from the components, and removing the graphics card and trying RAM in different slots.
