This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

CrystalDiskInfo says my SSD is in perfect condition, Hard Disk Sentinel says its in critical condition

One shows 100% health, while the other shows 3% health.

I can tell something is wrong (Windows CHKDSK on boot up a couple of times a week, random 'lag' spikes), but i definitely wasnt expecting anything critical.

What should i do? Which tool is right? Will formatting help at all?

    PC Upgrade help

    Posted: 21 Jan 2020 02:33 PM PST

I recently posted a similar thread, but have updated some things and wanted some fresh takes.

    My current PC:

    i7 6700

    GTX 970

    8 GB DDR3

    128 GB SSD

    1 TB HDD

    500W PSU

    1920x1080 144HZ Monitor

I'm planning on keeping my SSD,HDD, and PSU. I have $800 to spend on upgrades that I've been wanting. This is what I've come up with:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/sw8gzN

Through benchmarking research, I've found that the Ryzen 5 3600 is better than the 2700x for gaming, and that my GPU choice is pretty good as well.

NZXT 510i front panel connectors and AIO connector

    Posted: 21 Jan 2020 02:24 PM PST

    Hello everyone!

I'm building my PC and need some answers for my problems, could not find the answers googling. My post was deleted from r/NZXT so hopefully I can find some help here.

    1) The front panel connector going to motherboard. I have to use a splitter and motherboard manual shows exactly which one goes where. But the problem is, on the splitting connector I have no idea which pin is + and which -. There is +P LED and -PLED which is fine. But POWER SW and H.D.D LED dont have those marks. Also both cables are black. There is an arrow on one of the pins, but no idea if it means + or -?

    2) My AIO has 3-pin connector, but motherboard 4-pin. I understand that it is OK to connect, but which pins should I use?

    3) My case has Smart Device V2, so 2 original fans connect there and 3 connectors come out, but I have not managed to find out where should I connect those on my motherboard?

Maybe someone has a build similar to mine and can be helpful?

    Specs:

    CPU: Ryzen 9 3900x
    COOLER: EVGA CLC 280mm AIO
    MB: MSI X570 A-PRO
    RAM: G.Skill DDR4 32GB 3600MHz
    Storage: ADATA XPG S40G 1TB M.2
    GPU: Gigabyte Radeon 5700XT
    Case: NZXT H510i
    PSU: Corsair HX1200i 80+ Platinum

    Thanks in advance!

Building a PC for $350-500 just to play RPG's and stream?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2020 02:16 PM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes indeed

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I basically want to play all my RPG's on Steam that I never got to play after my laptop broke. Witcher 1-3, Mass Effect 1-3, Dragon Age, Fallout and Skyrim. I'd like to play some more modern games too, but it's not high priority

    Then got just streaming Netflix/Hulu/Amazon

Also Rocksmith. I love that game

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I want at least 60fps and 1080p. If I can get higher with my price range than great!

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

$350-500 I'm hoping is enough for what I'm looking for.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/XXhc4n

I've somehow gone to 800+ with that

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Hopefully I wasn't too vague, but i don't really have any idea what I'm doing tbh

Can someone please help me with a 1440p 144hz monitor?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2020 02:12 PM PST

Hey guys so I built a new PC, long story short I have an i7 9700k and a 2080super, I'm looking into a new monitor and I'm having a really hard time deciding. My budget is around 600 ish but if I could get it cheaper that would be great. Basically I'm looking for a 27" or possibly a 32" 1440p monitor with at least 144hz. I've heard great things about the Asus pg279q but there's a little confusion with those. Theres a Q, QZ, QR, and a couple others and all the discussions I've seen don't really say which one is which. Just release dates. I've also heard great things about the LG 27GL850 with nano ips. But I've also heard some bad about it too with contrast ratios. Honestly I'm so lost with it all. I have about 6 monitors in my cart with no hope for a clear winner. What's your best suggestion. Cause whatever the general consensus is I'm probably going with that. All I want is good g sync compatability, 1440p, 144hz, and a nice display. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm caught on the Asus PG279's LG Ultragears, Acer Predators, and the Asus TUF gaming monitor. Anyone have experience and can vouge for any of them.

Should I get the I5-9600k or i7-9700k with a 2070 SUPER (For gaming only nothing else)

    Posted: 21 Jan 2020 01:55 PM PST

I'm building a pc with a 2070 Super, when choosing a CPU I'm torn between either the I5-9600K or the i7-9700K, the pc won't be used for anything other than Gaming and I would be using a 144hz monitor which one should I go with? I do have money in mind so is it worth it to pay the extra for the i7? Are there any better choices I should go for?

is it wise to use a 2 tb ssd as both a boot drive and storage space for everything else

    Posted: 21 Jan 2020 09:35 AM PST

(snmsung 860 EVO) the alternative is buying a 1 tb ssd and a 500gb ssd to use as a boot drive although i would be letting go of 500gb.

( This is strictly a gaming PC )

    Question about 1080 ti

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 11:08 PM PST

Thank you. (planning on upgrading to 1440p monitor). Forgot to add its used for few months with receipt and original box.

    Curved monitors?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2020 12:38 PM PST

Hey all, I'm thinking of getting a new monitor soon. I'd like to find a 32 or 34 inch ultra wide with 1440p resolution. A lot of these monitors come in a curved style. Is curved really best if you sit relatively close to the monitor? I use my system for gaming but also work and movies. Does it make more sense to look for a flat display?

Should I upgrade my GPU, CPU/Mobo/RAM, or Monitor?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2020 12:19 PM PST

I'm looking to upgrade my PC/setup, just not sure where to begin. All of these upgrades will hopefully take place over time, I just don't know which to do first.

I'm currently using an Intel G4560 on a Biostar motherboardwith 8 gigs DDR4 Ram, with a GTX 1060 6gb on a 75 Hz monitor. I can upgrade to either a 144hz monitor, a Ryzen 5 2600X processor with a new mobo and 16gb of faster ram, or to a GTX 1070/1080. Each would cost me around the same amount ($300-400), but I can only do one at a time while I save up. Which should I prioritize?

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I have recommended that he just use Cooler Master's fan for $30 than starting off with Liquid Cooling. I have a Gigabyte GTX 1060 6GB that I can sell to him cheaper than the 2060 that I used with an equivalent build before I upgraded. It worked amazing for every game I played, CSGO, CoD, Apex Legends, Rocket League, Forza, GW2, and others with 1080p 144hz and med-ultra settings. I also have a 1080p 144hz monitor I can supply him that isn't part of that build which he will need. Both of these items are in great condition too.

NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section.

    DRAM Error

    Posted: 21 Jan 2020 12:04 PM PST

First PC build.Assembly went a lot smoother than I thought it would have gone. Though complications have still arose. Namely, inactive ports, which seems to be my biggest issue. Given, I didn't know I could, or how to test run as I was going along to diagnose problems.

After, what I thought was completing the build, where all lights were on and fans were working, as should be, I went to plug the HDMI cable into the monitor, which came up as "No input signal."

*Worth noting that the fans for my GPU work for roughly ten seconds, then stop.** Also, I'm using a certain RAM that is designed for an Intel core processor, butread that it is still compatible with my processor. Don't know how true that is?

Of course I noticed when I went to input my mouse in the USB port, that it's lights did not register, but I assumed that it would once I got passed the inactive signal screen. Though, I was wrong.

After repeatedly tinkering with it, I noticed a yellow LED light on my motherboard. Looked it up in the motherboard which referred to as a DRAM error.

Which led me to where I am now, and I don't know where to go from here.

I don't know if that is enough information, here are my parts I'm using for my build:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/user/egrochowski/saved/#view=Txk4nQ

    CPU AMD Ryzen 7 2700x 3.7 GHz 8-Core Processor
Motherboard Asus ROG Strix B450-F Gaming ATX AM4 Motherboard
    Memory Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4 - 3200 Memory
Storage Samsung 860 EVO 500 GB 2.5" SSD
Video Card MSI GeForce GTX 1650 Super 4 GB Gaming X Video Card
Case Phanteks Eclipse P360X ATX Mid
Power Supply Corsair CXM 650 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX PS
    Monitor HP 25x

Would be happy to elaborate further, to erase any sort of confusion I may have caused.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

*Edit*: If motherboard is faulty, what exactly does that mean, and what do I do?
