    Simple Questions - January 20, 2020

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 04:14 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Should I buy a PC from a closing Gaming Cafe?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 03:19 AM PST

So I'm saving money to buy a pc and then a news has got to me that a gaming hub is closing and now selling its computers. At first they sell it for $350 then $300 then $250, that's the price if I convert my currency to usd. Now I think this is a good deal, and the specs are great for the price too. But I'm still scared to buy since it's from a gaming hub and I have the feeling that the computers are overused. So here's the question, what should I check if I'm going to buy from a gaming hub? Or is it better if I just continue to save my money for brand new pc?

Edit: I'm going to use it for 3D stuff.

    Not sure about some components.

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 03:46 AM PST

Hi guys, planning to build a pc for gaming, unsure of some parts:

    CPU: 9900KS

GPU: Gigabyte Aorus GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Xtreme Waterforce

    RAM: G.Skill Tident Z Neo 16GB DDR4 (3600 mhz 16CL) (or just Trident Z, as I understand there isn't much difference?)

    Motherboard: GIGABYTE Z390 AORUS MASTER

Case: Cooler Master MasterCase H500M ARGB

SSD: Samsung SSD 970 Evo Plus

HDD (for storage): WD BLACK WD4005FZBX vs WD Blue Desktop WD40EZRZ 4TB (is Black overkill just for storage?)

PSU: Corsair RM850 VS HX850I vs RM850X vs ASUS Thor 850.

AIO: CM ML360R VS AORUS LIQUID COOLER 360 vs Thermaltake Floe 360 (dunno which one is better)

Am I missing anything or are there incompatibilities I'm not seeing?

Can I build using these parts and my Phillips screwdriver driver?

Last question, how can I put in more fans later? Would the be connect to motherboard or the PSU?

3600x, Aorus elite wifi mb, pc cooler moonlight (?) fans for push and exhaust. Stock af120's that came with the case for pull.

    570x case

Will a 600w power supply be enough for a 2070-super?

Thoughts and experiences on AIO versus custom liquid loop? What things to look out for, what to look forwards to?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 08:10 AM PST

Those who have made or used custom liquid cooling loops and AIO's, what are your opinions on the two liquid cooling systems?

I'm considering moving from my AIO towards a more customized liquid cooling system. What things should I look for, are there any pitfalls or surprise mechanics that you can share? While AIO's are easier to maintain, being essentially maintenance free, does custom liquid cooling loop bring enough cooling capacity to justify the increased maintenance, or is the difference more style than power?

Does the USB connection for built into a PC WiFi slot go to the same controller as the rest of the USB ports on the Board?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 12:11 PM PST

I am interested in running Unraid using a USB adapter card plugged into the WiFi card slot, and then using the board's normal ports passed through to a VM.

mPCIE and M.2 A/E keyed slots electrically both have PCIE AND USB 2.0 interfaces.

I've found these devices that access the mPCIE or m.2 A/E key USB signal and provide a USB port. I've checked the big chip on the PCB and it is nothing more than a USB hub chip, so these chips rely on the USB signal coming from the slot.

So, if you plug one of these into the A/E key card slot, would it generally appear separate from a motherboard hardware perspective? Or would it just be a USB hub plugged into the existing chipset USB controller?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I am aware of this solution which may fit the bill, it looks like it must have a real USB controller on an mpcie card: mpcie to USB 3.0

But, I can't find anything similar that's M.2 and the MPCIE to m.2 adapters are surprisingly expensive ($12 for a very basic PCB).

I haven not bought a motherboard yet, but if anyone knows a specific AM4 motherboard that has this feature, that also may solve the problem if its <$200.

    PCIe question

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 12:10 PM PST

Dear people of the Buildapc subreddit,

I'm currently running a 1050ti in the bottom PCIe slot of my GIGABYTE B450 aorus elite Motherboard. Because of my custom Mac G5 case I need do do that. (I know it's not the best option)

I want to upgrade my GPU since it's quite old already, and it's the biggest bottleneck in my PC.

I'm concerned that a better GPU might saturate the bandwidth on the bottom slot, but I can't find from what gen the slot is. (PCIe. gen 1, 2, 3...) I know that the slot is 4x, it says that on the MB.

Can anyone tell me the full specs of the bottom PCIe slot and plz help me out?

    SPECS:

CPU: Ryzen 7 2700x GPU: GTX 150ti MB: GIGABYTE B450 aorus elite RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x 16gb

Can I test a potentially fried GPU (lightning strike) in a working PC?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 12:05 PM PST

Is it safe to put a potentially fried GPU from a lightning strike in my working PC?

The PSU is 100% dead on the old PC, and so are both of the hard drives. I'm wondering if it is safe to put the GPU in my new PC to see if it possibly is still alive or not.

    Thanks for any advice.

    GTX 1080 Ti for 350€?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 12:51 PM PST

After browsing willhaben.at, an austrian retail site, I found a GTX 1080Ti for 350€ from Palit (the super jetstream 11GB one) and thought it would be a fair price. Do you think I should buy it now or wait till RTX 30×× releases and drops the 1080Ti/2080Ti prices? I know it's still a decent card maxing out literally any game you throw at it. Also, how good would that card be if paired with a 9700K and 32GB DDR4-2666?

Upgrade Path Help for 2016 Build

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 03:17 PM PST

Hey all, so I haven't been good at keeping my hand in the PC parts game, I figured I would turn to you guys for advice. I built a PC in summer 2016, and I'm looking now for upgrade advice. I just was wondering what and when would be the best bang for my buck. My PC specs are:

Proc: Intel Core i7-6700K 8M Skylake Quad-Core 4.0 GHz LGA

Mobo: ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VIII FORMULA LGA 1151 Intel Z170

Graphics: EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition, 8GB GDDR5X

    Ram: 64GB GSKILL dual channel

HD: 500gb SSD Samsung 850 EVO

    Storage: 1TB Samsung NVMe SSD

I have the setup liquid cooled, and running an Acer XB270HU which is think I'll be fine with for quite some time. I can't tell if I'm behind or should just wait for an upgrade path. Any advice (even just sit and wait, you idiot..) is appreciated.

Looking to upgrade my old gaming PC which is pretty old, bought in 2012 I believe...

    • AMD Phenom II X4 850
    • ASUS M5A78L-M LX
    • EVGA GTX 760 SC w/ EVGA Cooler
    • 8GB DDR3 SDRAM

I have spent a few days watching Youtube Videos and have come up with soemthing I hope will work well for my Budget. Get paid on Thursday, have some Xmas money to spend and am happy to part finance.

This is what I have come up with so far

    https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/Kk3ndm

Getting it all fropm Overclockers.co.uk is about £60.00 more expensive than the cheapest possible and they offer the finiance I am looking for too.

Will be using it it for games that my current PC struggles with such as Anno 1800, City Skylines, Eve Online, Stellaris etc,

Issue with PC turning on and not sure what to do next.

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 09:57 AM PST

Hey. I'm not exactly sure if this is the correct place to put this, but I'll just straight into this as I'm not sure where to go with the issue I'm having.

My PC recently stopped working, what happens is, when I turn it on, the fans and lights appear to be working for a split second and then turn off.

I originally thought this would be a PSU issue, so I bought one that's more up to date (I was on 600W, new one is 850W). However, the issue is still happening.

I have tried several different things to try and fix it, such as taking the PC apart and reconnecting everything. I've replaced the 2025 battery on the MOBO, switched out my sticks of Ram etc. but to no avail.

I even took it to a local PC repair shop where they told me my initial thoughts, that it was due to the PSU (this was with the newer PSU I had just bought, the 850W). I was told they tried with a different PSU and it worked fine, they said they even tested the one I provided and that it was faulty. So I assume I just had bad luck and received a faulty product, no biggie. I then got a replacement from the seller within 2 days and the issue is still happening.

I'm not sure what to do with it now. Getting an expert's opinion and it turning out wrong is putting me off ever going back to them, even after paying for them to tell me the wrong thing kind of sucks.

Would anyone know of there was any tool I could use myself to check what the issue is? I'd rather do that than buy any more new pieces for the issue to persist regardless. Or if someone would know what direction to point me in or maybe someone else has suffered from this in the past themselves?

Any input is much appreciated! Thanks for your time!

Need a little confirmation and help in build for my little brother.

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 08:57 AM PST

So my mom called me the other day asking if ps4 is better than Xbox to get for my little brother. Thinking that it would be better to spend that money on getting a pc I offered her to build him one. As he's 9 it doesn't have to be top notch but 1070 should have couple years of longevity left playing GTA V , Minecraft, Fortnite and what not.

I've done it once in uni 5y ago and have internet to help me so Im sure I can manage it. Still, after days of research I'd like someone's input that I chose parts that work together and make sense.

The budget is around 600 so I thought to go with used gtx 1070 or 1660ti, which ever I could get around 150 used.

As I don't want to OC it Ryzen 5 2600x should be not bottlenecking the GPU and be enough watching YouTube and some schoolwork in coming years.

Not sure if I should go m.2 mx500 or the 2.5" one. M.2 would be easier to build, motherboard has one sata m.2 port anyway and it looks better but I'm little worried of it overheating and throttling. Being already little over budget I can't fit in 20$ heatsink. At the same time the case comes with 2 fans and I thought to put one extra to the back so it should have ample of airflow.

Other thing is the PSU. Will 500w be enough or should I go with 600w. Pcpartpicker says it will take 364w so in my mind 500w 80plus efficiency psu should be enough.

Also any good ideas how to cut the cost not losing in performance would be greatly appreciated.

Alsoalso the prices are actually in Euros as I'm located in EU.

a question about my recently purchased AMD card.

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 02:36 PM PST

    hello everyone,

just recently, i have decided to swap / upgrade my old GTX 1060 Strix for a Sapphire 5700 XT Nitro +.

i've been incredibly excited to install it since purchase, and with estimated delivery time supposed to be within the coming days, i couldn't help but google around about the card further, to boost my excitement.

through this further research, i came across a lot of posts that really weren't what i wanted to see. i looked specifically at how the card performed for some people on my favourite game League of Legends, only to find A LOT of people saying the drivers for these cards are busted ( black screens , crashing etc. ).

now i did notice that these posts are dated ( September 2019 - ish ), and ultimately i wanted to know if since then, the drivers have been sufficiently updated.

have just spent $799 AUD on this new card and really hoping it's not a downgrade from my 1060.

    thanks guys!
