This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Be sure to remove all required GPU brackets that are in contact with the surface area of your GPU... Rookie Mistake!

    Posted: 17 Jan 2020 09:47 AM PST

After dealing with higher than expected temps on my RX 5700 for 2 months, frustrated that under clocking wasn't helping, I finally had a look at the backside of my PC. This is when I noticed that the vent holes on the backside of my blower style GPU appeared to be blocked by my case's GPU brackets. I realized my GPU is thick enough to occupy two bracket slots, so I remove it from the board to discover that (OBVIOUSLY) the entire side that faces the bracket is ventilation for the GPU. While considering what an idiot I am, I removed the bracket cover and re-secured my GPU, now not blocking any exhaust holes. Sure enough, my temps dropped from 95 degrees to a steady 70-75, and the noise went from Boeing 787 to a distant Honda Accord.

EDIT: For those struggling to understand what I'm saying, see this stock photo I drew on to better understand.

Also, see the stock photo of the back of my specific case and card. My GPU outputs are located in the second from the top expansion slot. The third from the top slot was the one blocking the vents, and is now open so the vents are exposed. As can be seen, the vents are flush, so that's why the card was able to fit behind the closed expansion slot.

    Expansion Slot

    Case and GPU

Also worth mentioning that on my case, the slot covers aren't mesh that are easily removable. They are solid metal built into the case that have to be bent until they snap off. And also worth clarifying! My card doesn't have a DVI slot like that STOCK photo. My card only has vents in the second slot (Gigabyte Reference RX 5700)

How do I upgrade to an SSD? (OS SSD)

    Posted: 17 Jan 2020 03:22 AM PST

I'm wanting to move my OS to an SSD. Currently run Windows on a mechanical drive, so am going to get a 120gb SSD for the OS to compliment my other 2tb drive.

Is it possible to move my OS from the 2tb drive onto the SSD? Or am I going to have to reinstall and start fresh on the SSD?

    Many thanks!

The days finally here, can finally afford my new GPU!!

    Posted: 17 Jan 2020 05:12 AM PST

Edit: the PCPartPicker list has an incorrect PSU listed. That PSU is planned as a future purchase. I currently have a EVGA 500W GD 80+ Gold PSU. Sorry for the mistake.

I know I've been posting here quite a bit, so sorry if my many topics seem a tad spammy. Been trying to learn more about my PC, it's components, what does and does not work, and overall just soaking in what information the community is giving me. To all of you I say, thank you very much.

I've been working my ass off and scraping together all my OT pay and I can finally afford to replace my XFX RX 580, and just in time since it's been having some graphical issues lately (artifact, green screen tears etc).

So is my final time asking but which does community find fits my PC best?

Above is the card I am leaning toward most. My case has a clearance of 320 mm max for the GPU and the card itself is 300mm though I have seen reports of it being somewhat closer to 305 mm. My PSU is a B- tier 500w EVGA GD 80+ gold.

While it's not the most optimal PSU I've gathered that it's good enough till I scrape together more cash down the line for a PSU with more headroom. I simply plan on Undervolting the 5700 XT to be on the safe side and reduce thermals.

The case has had it's bum 140mm fan replaced with a Corsair 140mm fan and 2 120mm fans have been installed for better circulation. The top mounted fan is serving as an exhaust while the back and front fans are set as intake fans.

I've been torn between the PC Red Devil and the EVGA 2060 Super XC Ultra edition however (link below). While it's the lesser card, NVIDIA has more out of the box and play potential with minimal effort needed on my own part aside from having to DDU for a clean install.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/product/V23mP6/evga-geforce-rtx-2060-super-8-gb-xc-ultra-gaming-video-card-08g-p4-3163-kr

So with all that said, which would be better for my PC in general. 1440 is nice but I am quite happy going 1080p 144hz for the smoother gameplay. 5700xt has more down the road potential but may come with some issues given my PSU. The 2060 Super seems like the safer option but will have less potential so to speak

And for one last question. If I go 5700XT, will DDU be needed or will it be fine for a plug and play sort of deal? Since it's just AMD go AMD.

Thank you all again, I have actually enjoyed getting to dive deeper into the world of PC parts and customizing my PC. You all have really been a source of helpful information that has had me hooked since I made my first order.

    BeQuite! Pure Base 500

    Posted: 17 Jan 2020 04:14 AM PST

    Pure Base 500

    Pure Base 500

After a long 6 years, I've decided to build a new budget pc for 1080p gaming. My secondary aim was minimal noise at least on idle so I thought I share my experience.

    CASE: BeQuite Pure Base 500

    MB: Asrock B450M Pro4

    CPU: Ryzen 7 2700

GPU: Asus RX 570 4 GB

PSU: Be Quiet! Power Pure 11 600W

    RAM: 2x 8 GB Patriot Viper 4 3000 MHz

    HDD: 1TB

    SSD: 240GB M.2

The Pure Base case comes with two 140mm Pure Wings fans and noise insulation which isn't standard in this price category. Btw it looks really nice, I was surprised how wide it is compared to my old Corsair case. I've ordered a non modular PSU and there is enough space in the case to hide all the cables even while using extensions. I've moved the front intake fan from middle position a bit lower so it would cool the GPU better. It's also pulling more air in, in this position because of the case design. GPU temperature at idle is now a couple degrees lower.

After a few days the stock Ryzen cpu cooler flew out of the case. Temps were ok but it's spinning too fast even at idle, it's just to loud for my taste. Bought a BeQuite Pure Rock and set it to spin at 600rpm up to 55°C CPU temperature, even while playing games temperature stays at around 50°C. Case fans are non PWM but I can control their speed via Asrock motherboard, they are set to spin at 500rpm and the PSU fan spins around 600rpm. With all fans spinning only up to 600rpm there is almost no sound coming from the case, even at night without noise from outside I have to be really close to the pc to hear if it's turned on.

The tricky part was the GPU. Up to 55°C fans are at zero rpm which is good, but while gaming the RX570 are known for producing quit a bit of noise. Out of the box fans spin at 55% around 2000rpm. I've managed to undervolt the card from 1150mV down to 965mV while maintaining stock speed of 1256mhz. While playing KCD temperature went down from 70°C to 63°C with 2000rpm. Than I have lowered fan speed to 35% ~ 1200rpm and the temperature raised again to acceptable 70°-72°C. Acustic difference is day and night, it's still the loudest part but only by a litlle bit.

3900x vs 3950x which should i get if all i really do is game on my pc?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2020 02:18 PM PST

I've been meaning to upgrade my CPU for a while now and have finally decided to do it but I'm not sure if I should spend the extra cash on the 3950x vs the 3900x if all I ever really do is game on my pc. Is there a big enough difference between them to justify getting the 3950x?

Cant install GPU drivers. Could my card have gone bad?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2020 02:07 PM PST

So I have a prebuilt HP desktop that I had upgraded the psu and GPU (Rx480) in around 3 Years ago. It has worked perfectly since then with no hiccups.

Fast forward to this week. I saw all of the hullabaloo about RIS and all the new features in the adrenalin 2020 edition drivers. So I went into radeon settings checed for updates and began the update. It couldnt finish the install so i got DDU, uninsalled in safe mode and restarted. Still no dice. I googled things to try like disable antivirus and firewalls. I used amd's cleanup utility as well. I scanned and checked windows and the filesystems integrity (came back perfect). Somewhere I read to delete the installation folder for the driver so I did that. Still no dice. Lastly I tried going down the list of old drivers that did work and couldnt install those either.

Finally, defeated I used a restore point I had to reset it to a few days ago when I still had a working driver. Only problem is device manager shows I have a driver but I cant open amd settings and confirm any thing. I can try to open it but nothing happens.

My specs are i7 6700 16 gb ddr3l (OEM) OEM mobo Sapphire nitro plus 8gb rx480 Evga either 550 or 600w bronze rated psu Crucial mx300 250gb boot drive 2tb seagate hdd

I always get the same 1603 "a general issue has occured" The amd support site basically only says to use the amd cleanup utility.

Bascially need help on what else to do before i backup and do a clean install of my OS.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Drive letters switched, PC won't boot

    Posted: 17 Jan 2020 01:40 PM PST

I am currently dealing with some driver problems and restored my pc (windows 10). It booted once but since then, upon rebooting my pc, it starts in recovery mode. When I attempt to restore to a restore point, it tells me that I haven't turned on system protection on my C: drive. Opening command prompt in the advanced recovery options and ran DISKPART. This is where it gets weird as it shows that my boot drive is listed as D: and my additional HDD is my C drive.

I honestly have no clue how to proceed from here and hope you are able to help me.

Edit: I have since found this, but I am not sure how to do this from the console.

Edit 2: I just ran bootrec/ScanOs and it says 'total identified Windows installations: 0'

    Ryzen 7 2700x or Ryzen 5 3600

The 7 is currently 177 on amazon

    The 5 is 189

Which one is better for a 900-1000$ build?

The computer will be used for medium games like astroneer, Minecraft, TF2, and rocket League (not really any AAA titles) and some light video editing

Why do people recommend overkill PSUs?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2020 09:05 AM PST

I'm seeing trend of recommending overkill (will use this generic term for sake of simplicity) PSUs, it's complete madness.

For a source of PSU tiering, I will be referring to Linus Techtips PSU Tier List.

There are basically two types of overkill recommendations:

    • Recommending overkill wattage.

    • Recommending overkill "quality" PSUs in comparison to overall build.

The first one is just stupid in itself and I guess not worth talking. The second one of overkill recommendations is more interesting however.

So many times I've seen people asking for budget builds for for midrange or lower end PCs - like Ryzen 5 1600 (AF), Ryzen 2600 or even Ryzen 3600 paired with budget GPU like 1650S, 1660S, etc.. and people are screaming: get RMx from Corsair - which costs damn 1/4 of total build cost (or frankly other from A or higher tier, of which pricing basically starts at 100€+). Then you see someone builds something like Ryzen 7 3700x with 2080s and they are recommending the same PSU.

All B tier PSUs (from list I linked) are exceptionally suitable for that level of PCs builds and cost 30-50% (varying between individual models). However there is trend of saying anything below A tier is a ticking bomb, it will kill your PC, burn your house and other complete and utter nonsense.

B tier consists PSUs with decent quality components (so 105'C rated capacitors), all important safety features, bronze/gold efficiency rating, powerful enough 12V rail (typically ~95% of total PSU wattage), DC-DC converters, good voltage control, good voltage ripple control and good reliability to handle mid-range PC builds. Nothing will explode and nothing will kill your PC or burn your house. B tier is pretty solid.

People are completely insane when it comes down to PSU recommendations. What next? AXi recommendations incoming?

If you view reviews of those affordable B tier PSUs reviews on Jonny Guru (reputable PSU tester/reviewer), you'll see those PSUs are far better than what people commonly acknowledge. Ofc if someone is building 1500 €/$ PC with intentions to high overclocks it's completely different situation.

Where is this trend even coming from, where basically only S and A tiers are worth buying, while everything else, is trash regardless of what you are building and at what budget). I've seen such recommendations for ultra budget PCs on iGPU, completely ridiculous, because "don't skimp on PSU", but skimp != skimp.

Need Help Choosing a Monitor and Feedback about Potential Build Path!!

    Posted: 17 Jan 2020 02:57 PM PST

    PCPartPicker list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/DjtQGc

Above is the build path I've chosen after researching components the past few months. I'm new to PC building and plan on building my own very soon. However, in the midst of the excitement of researching and choosing these components I completely forgot I'd need a decent monitor to go with it. I currently use my Xbox One on my 32 inch 60hz Samsung Smart TV at my desk setup so I was looking at the AOC CQ32G1 1440p 144hz monitor as a decently budget monitor as I'll already be spending a good bit on the actual PC. I guess I could go down to a 27 inch but I'd rather keep my desk layout about how it is now. Right now this monitor is on Amazon for $320 bucks. Does anyone have one of these or have used one? How are curved monitors? Will this be sufficient until I can buy a better monitor within a year or so?

Also, how about the PC build I've chosen? I know I could get cheaper RAM but I wanted a little more RGB for my first build. How is the stock fans in the H500? Should I look into buying some of those too? And CPU coolers... I can't really decide between the Noctua NH-D15, Dark Rock Pro 4, or the Thermalright Le Grand Macho RT. Any input here is also greatly appreciated.

For whoever took the time to read and reply I wanna thank you so much. I've learned more on r/buildapc than I ever thought possible. Thanks, guys!

    8/16 cores/threads enough for gaming?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2020 02:44 PM PST

Hi all, just wanting to see what people think about 8 cores 16 thread cpu gaming for the next 5-10 years. I am wanting to upgrade this year and wish to keep the cpu for as long as possible, i am deciding between a 9900k or a 3800x but I know that ryzen 4000 and intel 10th gen will drop this year...

I know 10th gen intel will have a 10 core/20 thread processor and ryzen 4000 might have similar and better cpus. In a few years will we see 8 core/16 thread get treated like 'basic'? Especially since new consoles are coming out with 8 core and allegedly 16 threads too

TLDR: Is 8 core/16thread 'enough' for gaming or will a 10/12 core cpu be worth it in the longrun?
