Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

If you're buying used GPUs always consider applying thermal paste for better temps. I bought a used r5 240 with temps of around 90C When gaming. Applied paste and it's down to 70C max

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 07:02 AM PST

By stress testing it would go all the way to 94C during the first 7 minutes so I had to shut it down from fear of it overheating. Now it can go past 20+min in a stress test without going past 81C

Every used GPU you buy doesn't need thermal paste though.

I also bought a used r9 270 factory OC card recently and the temps never go above 65C while gaming. Even while stress testing it never goes above 70C. Yeah I'm not changing the magical paste on that any time soon.

Edit: as for the thermal paste I used, it's noctua nt h1

I ordered most of the parts during the black Friday and cyber Monday sales but it took a while for some to ship and it's been a busy few weeks but I finally got around to building my first machine.

I know blower video cards are bad but considering the small form factor I figured it'd be the best option. BitWit actually made a video about this using the same case
In hindsight I should've gone for a normal video card with a SFX PSU. However that would also require me to get custom cables considering the regular ones aren't long enough and a mounting plate. Which would make my build considerably more expensive. Plus I didn't want to over complicate things.
I already made things a lot harder than necessary by picking this case but I really wanted this particular case because it fits so well in my desk

The build went a lot smoother then I thought, all those case wires looked intimidating but once those were all in the right place it was easy. Though who the hell thought the back end of the motherboard is a good place to put the front audio header!? Do all graphics cards have a little cutout just so these cables can reach this ridiculous spot?

Other issues I ran into is the lack of fan ports on this particular motherboard. I was going to buy a different MSI board with 2 headers but I could get a good deal on this one. Considering I opted for an additional case fan I needed to order a 1 to 3 splitter.

Everthing just worked at the first boot, I only had to a just the fancurve a little because it apparently suffered from "Rush to idle" causing the CPU fan to keep ramping up.

if you have 2 monitors, does it matter if one is 60 hz and the other is 144? Does having 2 monitors reduce your videocard performance?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 01:10 PM PST

hey guys, so I might buy a new desktop with a new monitor (144 Hz) and keep my current main 1440p 60 Hz as my side monitor and remove my 1080p monitor. Does it matter that the 2 monitors will be on different Hz, as in will the 60 Hz not downscale the 144 Hz to the same Hz or something like that?

Also, second question, does having 2 monitors reduce the performance of your videocard? I think i've read something like this but im not sure I understood it. Im talking in the scenario that you game on the main one, and keep the second one for secondary stuff does (so in other words: the game is not displayed on both monitors).

    Thank you guys.

    PSU Watt recommendations?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:32 PM PST

    Hi guys!

I am currently upgrading my small PC tower. Something I'm not too confident with is wattages, so I'm looking for a minimum recommendation.

    PC is running:

    • ASRock B365M Phantom Gaming 4 Motherboard
    • Intel Core i5-9400F
    • Zotac GTX 1050 TI OC
    • 2x 28" 60Hz Monitors
    • 1 SSD, 2 HDDs

My current old PSU has 255w and I was thinking of an upgrade to 550w (Corsair VS550).

    troubleshooting 12-y-o kid's pc build

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:04 PM PST

    Troubleshooting Help:

hi, noob here and mom to a 12-y-o pc builder. My son built his own pc June 2019 and it has been working great since then. He used pcpartpicker for his build. Recently, his pc has been shutting down / restarting while playing games on it. He states that the video card is overheating to 90-100 degrees. I do not know how to confirm this is the case - nor how to troubleshoot to find the problem and potential solution. My savvy 12-yo may (or may not) be trying to con me into allowing him to buy a new video card (RTX 2060 Super).

Any suggestions on what may be causing the pc to shutdown and how I may be able to troubleshoot?

Here is his PC Build: CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor

Motherboard: MSI B450M GAMING PLUS Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard

    Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory

Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

Storage: ADATA Ultimate SU800 128 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

Video Card: MSI Radeon RX 570 8 GB ARMOR MK2 Video Card

Case: NZXT H500 ATX Mid Tower Case

Power Supply: EVGA BR 450 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply

    Thanks! -virago

Surprise assortment of pc parts showed up for a Christmas build - need some guidance. Thank you!

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 02:26 PM PST

Hi r/buildapc, I am just another lost soul in need of some guidance. I will try to keep this as short as possible in order to save you all valuable time:

In essence, my GF wanted a gaming/streaming PC for Christmas and her parents went ahead and bought her an assortment of parts. It's actually pretty funny, because the parts showed up with two power supplies and no case. But they tried! It's kind of sweet.

Anyway, here is the list of what they sent - she'd like to keep returns to a minimum because she doesn't want to seem ungrateful:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/user/fishersbeard/saved/#view=PtnTJx

    -Intel Core i7-9700K 3.6 GHz 8-Core Processor

-be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 50.5 CFM CPU Cooler

-ASRock Z390 Phantom Gaming 4 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard

    -OLOy 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory

-HP EX900 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive

-Seagate Constellation CS 3 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

-EVGA GeForce RTX 2080 8 GB XC HYBRID GAMING Video Card

-Silverstone Essential 750 W 80+ Gold Certified ATX Power Supply

-EVGA 750 GQ Power Supply (second unnecessary power supply)

So basically I have three questions:

    1. Does it matter which power supply I return?
    2. What is a good case for this build from Amazon or Best Buy (GF isn't too partial to crazy RGB stuff). I would rather it have good airflow. Large case is fine.
    3. Will this computer work? Or am I missing something integral here?

I've never built a PC before (I use mac because audio stuff and laziness) but want to help her do this. Thank you SO MUCH in advance for your time. I really appreciate this sub and reddit in general.

Is incompatible RAM really my problem?

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

After assembling my build and plugging in the power source and monitor, no output is displayed. All fans spin and light light up, including a mobo LED, cooler LED, and RAM RGB lighting. After some Googling, this appears to be a very common problem. I have tried several fixes recommended online (described in next section), however many online sources point out it could be due to incompatible RAM. PCPartPicker gave me no warnings with regards to RAM, but after a post hoc search of ASRock's compatibility list for my motherboard, my specific RAM does not appear, however many similar sticks from the same maker (Corsair) are compatible.

The relevant compatibility list is here. (Pinnacle Ridge processor).

My question is short: Is incompatible RAM really my problem, or are there other things I should try? I just want the advice of an expert before I return these sticks for different ones.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

    Things I've attempted:

    • Removing and reinserting RAM
    • Trying only one RAM stick
    • Removing GPU and turning on
    • Reinserting GPU and turning on
    • "Flashing CMOS/BIOS" (ie, removing the CMOS battery, waiting 3 minutes, and reinserting)

    Other notes:

    • Yes, my monitor works. I'm using it right now.
    • Yes, my CPU and CPU cooler are seated properly.
    • Yes, PC turns on (fans spin, light turns on)
    • No OS has been installed (since I can't use the display), but I have an Ubuntu thumb drive at the ready. (I won't be using Windows).

TL;DR: My new build has no display output, and online resources suggest incompatible RAM is to blame (I have tried all other suggestions). I just need verification that this is my issue before spending money on new RAM sticks.

EDIT: Intermittent update - My HDMI cable was not plugged into my GPU. I am unable to test this solution now, but will attempt in a few hours.

    Upgrading my build, any thoughts?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 01:36 PM PST

Hi there. Upgrading my old i7 4770k build.

    Currently I'm running

i7 4770k@4.1GHz Palit Gamerock GTX 1080 4x4gb 1333MHz DDR3 MSI z87-G43 Gaming Samsung EVO 120gb SSD Coolermaster Storm Trooper Case

    Upgrading to:

Ryzen 5 3600 Keeping GPU 2x8gb 3600MHz Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro ASUS Prime B450M-A (Was planning on getting b450 Tomahawk, but I'm very impatient and it wasn't available for 1 day delivery lol) Intel 660p 1tb NVMe SSD Fractal Design Meshify C

Seems to me like it should be a pretty big upgrade, is there anything I should know or could've chosen better for not much of a price increase? Thanks for the input.

    The Build

Just wanted to share what I was able to put together thanks to this sub and r/buildapcforme

I got most of the components on sale during the holidays so I saved about ~$400 from what's listed, which I think was awesome for my first build.

I transferred Windows 10 from my laptop that was on it's way out. Edit: The GPU I got off eBay for about $130.

I am planning on buying another SSD dedicated to running the Adobe Creative Suite for my freelance/personal work.

    Overall very stoked!

After a LOT of problems - my first ever build is finally finished.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:50 PM PST

    https://imgur.com/a/Ng0XGOl

As in the title, after a ton of problems and errors; faulty memory sticks, corrupted windows installations, bad pick of case(started with NZXT h500 and the thermals and cable management with my PSU was a nightmare), and the fact that building a pc for the first time ever is intimidating as fuck, I even build the whole thing from scratch two times because of changing the case - my first ever pc build is finally finished and I just had to share the excitement of joining the master race.

I've always played games on shitty laptops or playstations and xbox's, until a couple of months ago i finally decided to invest into a full blown gaming rig. I couldn't have done it without the pc communities here on reddit, and my god has the journey and troubles been worth it.

I have no clue how to add a pcpartpicker list so i'll write it out as the scrub that I am:

    MOBO: Asus prime z390-a

    CPU: I7-9700k

    Cpu cooler: CM 212 evo

GPU: 2080S rog strix OC edition

    Memory: 16gb of G.skill tridentZ

    PSU: Corsair rm850x

    Case: Meshify C Dark TG

    Storage: 1TB + 500Gb of samsung evo ssd's

I could probably have build a compareable pc for way cheaper if I chose brands like AMD and whatnot - but nevertheless im quite happy with the result.

And sorry if the picture is bad - did my best to leave out my own reflection.

    Mid-range M-ITX build (1080P @ 60+Hz)

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:31 PM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

    Primary use will be gaming.

Will likely do some multitasking while gaming (spotify + web browsing + antivirus in background).

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1080P 60-144Hz at recommended settings. Games will be a lot of indie titles and some AAA titles from a few years ago. I'm OK with having lower quality graphics for more frames on very graphic intensive games, but would prefer to not have really blocky textures.

May upgrade to 1440P at some point.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Ballpark $550. I'm willing to spend a decent amount more per part if it means a significant increase in quality.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    Additional details

    • I have acquired both the CPU and GPU
    • The CPU is the 12nm refresh (AF unit)
    • The GPU is from a previous build and will be replaced in a year or so - I haven't used it in a while so I'll be putting in new thermal paste
    • I'm waiting for the mobo to drop back down to $90
    • Everything I haven't bought can be changed, though I would like a 1 TB SSD (NVME preferred) and a M-ITX case
    • No peripherals required

    Questions

    • How much does the RAM speed matter? I saw cheaper RAM for about 10 bucks less
    • Can I buy additional case fans for the 304? If so, should I?

    WiFi question

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 02:31 PM PST

Building my first pc, just waiting on the graphics card to come in. Is there any option besides connecting via Ethernet to get wifi on the computer for the first time or is that a no? I really hope there is as connecting it to router via Ethernet cable isn't possible for me..

My mobo is the Asus tuf x570 plus (WiFi)

RYZEN 9 & CHEAP MOTHETBOARD? Will it work? Desperate noob in need of help!:)

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 02:23 PM PST

Hi! I'm building my first "powerful" pc. When ordering my only req was as much cpu performance as I could afford. In an attempt to save some money I might have made a huge mistake but wanted some input!

    • The parts are on their way, but I have yet to recieve and build the computer.

    I'm getting,

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X

    Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix B450-F

It seems like they are compatible on the Asus website. After watching some YouTube videos on smilar boards it seems like the VRM Heatsink is likely to overheat? I'm clueless here but just need some input from the pros!

    Will this setup work? :')

    • I'm not going to overclock, and the cpu is going to get cooled by a Noctua NH-D14

    • The computer is intended as a productivity and work computer for music and video production.

ryzen 7 3700x/ gigabyte x570 gaming x no video output

    Hello,
I am currently building a new computer and have not built one since 2014 so am really rusty. I am having trouble booting up the system and its driving me nuts. All the fans start up but there seems to be no post boot as there is no video output. I tried taking the cpu cooler off and checked the pins of the cpu. Tested the system with 1 ram slot and still the same outcome. I have checked all the connections and they seem all connected. The PC seems to stay on and does not cut out. I can turn the num lock on and off if that helps xD. Could it be a hardware issue like static?

I got an rxt 2070 super coming tomorrow so no gpu is in the system currently.
