    Simple Questions - January 06, 2020

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 04:15 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Is it safe to use my pc?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 09:23 PM PST

Hi, I have no idea if this is the right sub to ask but I have no idea where else to post, and I apologise if this is a stupid question, but I'm in Australia, about 2 hours from these bushfires. The smoke has now reached our town and the entire town is covered, with it even slowly seeping inside our houses at this point (and we have been told to not evacuate). I was just wondering if it's safe to use my PC with the smoke slowly seeping inside? Am I risking any smoke damage or anything? Or is smoke damage even a thing for pc's??? Once again I apologise if this is a really stupid question I just don't want to risk anything, considering I only built it not even a week ago.

Building a mini ITX PC in secret for Christmas / UPDATE

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 08:54 AM PST

    https://i.imgur.com/s4OeYJF.jpg

    Hello,

Hope everyone had some fantastic holidays. As promised this is an update of my previous post.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/ebfin2/being_a_father_building_a_mini_itx_pc_in_secret/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

I know many of you asked for a video reaction for when he first opened his Christmas present unfortunately I can't share the video cause we spent Xmas in our big family with a bunch of crazy kids. That was just terrible to handle all of them lol.

So you barely can't hear him in the video due to the other young kids screaming and running crazy and full of joy...

My son first opened a package, a small one, he knew he was going to get a set of Pro Markers that he's been dreaming of so he can draw and keep improving his skills.

Despite knowing what was in that package he still was very grateful and his mom and I got a very warm hug, Jesus what a nice kid...

He then opened a few other ones that he got from his grand parents and uncle and aunt..

There was that big package on the side of the tree that no one knew what was inside. Some of the kids went crazy about it and they just kept touching it wondering what's inside.. my gosh I was so scared of them breaking the PC 😅

And then I looked at my son and said " hey son go check out what's inside, it's for you "

His eyes went big and round like that Cat from Shrek..

He slowly opened it and... we had like a 5 seconds of pure silence then followed by " OOOOOOoooooo " in chorus and perfectly synchronized that reminded me of the Alien in Toy Story 👽

    Everybody was like:

"What the heck is that ? What is it ? Is that some kind of pinball machine ? Look it's pink and blue, might be a toy ?"

Only my son remained silent.. he turned his head back, looked at me and.. pushed me to the ground and started crying in my arms... My God that is very hard to put some words on it... It was like I saw his entire life passing in front of my eyes from baby to the young teenager he now is...

Pure happiness, damn he loved it ! I was so relieved, so much work on it... The only words he said were "wow daddy " Tears came on my face, just couldn't hold them. I didn't expect to have a lot of words, his reaction was just pure gold because to me:

His silence was the reflection of his happiness and silence has so much to say.

... So yeah the PC was fully built and yet he had to do something very new : his first porn experience ! That window peeling, you know that last thing you all love to do at the very end of the process... It was for him.

So he started peeling it, too fast at the beginning " go slowly son and just... Feel it "

I will never, never forget his whispering words, soft yet clear like water " that is sooo gooood "

    " I know son " 😌

    And that's it !

On top of this thread I managed to capture his first reaction when he launched his first game Ark Survival. You can tell he was like diving deep in a whole new world.

I looked at him and I was smiling and thinking - you're impressed son, just keep playing a variety of games, you have no idea what your computer can do, and wait for your monitor with a high refresh rate... You'll have a lot of fun with it, it'll also help you in the very near future when you'll start coding and do animation stuffs, it'll help you achieve your dreams... and a single dream is stronger than thousands of reality. But at the end this is still a PC, more importantly I believe in you son, keep being nice, keep sharing and you'll get rewarded...

He's playing on an old Samsung TV for now but he can count on me for a better monitor as soon as I can. I also gave him my current Logitech Keyboard so he can play, the Ducky one 2 keyboard I'd like to get him is out of stock. And he has a brand new Glorious Model O gaming mouse that is fantastic.

Today he went to the bathroom and let his WhatsApp window opened, I didn't intend to spy on him but I saw a discussion with his friend, it said

" You'll never believe me, I got a PC for Christmas, I'm sooooo happy, really didn't expect this 😭😭😭. " " Wow you father is so cool " " No he's not cool. He was right from the beginning, he's a superhero "

    ...

Thank you everyone for your support, thank you for those amazing comments that mean so much to me as I'm trying so hard to be a good father despite that I had no role model, at least a good one when I was a kid... Also some of you sent me a few games as a gift on Steam for my son, bless you so much, he already finished one of them ( Guacamelee ).

    Love you guys.

M.2 SSD screws are bad and they should feel bad.

Is it time for a new build? What should I keep?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 11:47 AM PST

Hello buildapc, Currently I discovered my pc is stuttering playing sim games (Transport Fever 2 and Planet Zoo). I was wondering if I should go for a new build.

Currently my setup is: Motherboard: H87-pro CPU: i5 4670 GPU: GTX 1070 Memory: 16 GB DDR3 800 MHz PSU: Seasonic m2ii 620 bronze Storage: 1TB SSD, 1TB HDD Case: Fractal Design R2

What do you think? Is my CPU bottlenecking? Or is the whole build just outdated? Can I reuse some parts?

    Recommendation for Video Card replacement?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 01:33 PM PST

My 7-year-old MSI Radeon R9 280 3 GB TWIN FROZR died last night and I am looking for a cheap replacement. Performance-wise, I am just looking for something that can handle games on low-medium graphics. This is mainly due to my planning to do a whole new build by the end of the year, so I would only need the video card for less than a year.

Ideally, my budget is around $100 but could push a bit higher if the increase in performance justifies it. This is the old parts list I had for my build. Below are a couple of examples I am looking at:

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071JV26GH?tag=pcpapi-20&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07646VQ6T?tag=pcpapi-20&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1

If anyone has any recommendations that are around my budget it would be greatly appreciated.

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 11:15 AM PST

Just ordered my pc parts! I also had to face the troubles of ending discounts, so i owe this subreddit a lot for my build. Thank you for that, about my motherboard when i first built it, changing my ssd, gpu and tons of general knowledge also. Anyway, my build is a Ryzen 5 2600x | b450 mortar max - changed from tomahawk max as the price went wayyy up, and its a better board | corsair vengeance ddr4 3000 2x8 | sx8200 m.2 | 1660 super | Matrexx 55 mesh front | be quiet! System power 9 - nearly bought the sketchiest possible

    Moving from console to PC!

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 01:16 PM PST

    Hello everyone!

I hope I make this post right seeing as its my first time using reddit! So I have been playing games on console for the past 22 years of my life starting with the sega! My xbox has taken a crap on me twice now so I figured I would make the switch to PC gaming since tax season is quickly approaching. I added the parts listed below from my work in progress build using pcpartpicker. I want something that will last me a few years before I have to upgrade to keep up with the times. Money isn't that big of an issue but I would like to keep the PC itself under 2200 and then 800 for peripherals. My goals for my PC would be to play games smoothly at 1440p desirably, maybe do a little bit of 4k if i can and of course run 1080p no problem. Again this is my first time building a PC so if the parts seem a little dumb please excuse my ignorance lol. I looked up a few different parts and I'm still learning PC lingo and the ins and outs as well. If I could get some input on things that could be improved on or substituted I'm all ears before i make the dive and order my parts then wanna punch myself because I could have had something better.

**CPU** | [AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 3.6 GHz 8-Core Processor] $322.99: I wanted to go with the 5 3600 but figured since i had some wiggle room with cash I could future proof the system a bit by putting in a fast CPU. I do plan on OCing once i get the hang of everything.

**CPU Cooler** | [Corsair H100i RGB PLATINUM 75 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler] $159.49: This cooler I am thinking of placing on the top mount of the case as an exhaust set up.

**Motherboard** | [Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI) ATX AM4 Motherboard] $188.99: Pretty good reviews and fits in my price range and the wifi enabled on board is a plus.

**Memory** | [G.Skill Trident Z RGB 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 Memory] $99.99: I like the style of the ram and I was watching an LTT video about AMD ram speeds and Linus was saying that AMD works best with faster ram so i went with these sticks at 3600 with a cas of 16.

**Storage** | [Samsung 970 Evo Plus 250 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive] $69.98: this will be my boot drive and steam drive.

**Storage** | [Samsung 860 Evo 1 TB 2.5" Solid State Drive] $129.99: Games, movies, pictures etc.

**Video Card** | [Asus GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER 8 GB STRIX GAMING Advanced Video Card] $583.99: Here is where things get dumb for me, I am torn between the 2070 super and the 5700XT. I have seen videos and read some articles of the XT being able to compete with the 2070 in terms of fps. I like the ray tracing but not too sure how many games I would play that would support it. I am open for swapping for either one.

**Case** | [Corsair Obsidian 500D RGB SE ATX Mid Tower Case] $279.98: I switched my case from the NZXT H510 elite to the Corsair Obsidian due to the fact that the Corsair comes with the mesh front cover, 3 rgb fans, the commander pro, and I like the cases looks in general. I would be using the 3 included fans as intake.

**Power Supply** | [Corsair RMx (2018) 850 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply] $137.99: Again room to grow and it is fully modular.

**Case Fan** | [Corsair LL120 RGB LED 43.25 CFM 120 mm Fan] $39.99: last fan to put in the rear of the case as an additional exhaust.

    | **Total** | **$2013.38**

    Critique mini ITX office PC

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 12:18 PM PST

Building an office PC for a family friend. Initially thought to go with AMD 3600 and GT 1030 but decided to go with 3400g to save a few dollars and reduce overall case thermals.

My only concern so far is that the motherboard is a bit pricy but mini ITX b450 motherboard options are limited.

    New pc monitor or..?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 07:48 AM PST

    Hey all,

Just got myself a new pc. Still using my old monitor BenQ GW2270.

I was wondering what a new monitor would do for my graphics? Would it be a massive improvement? I'm willing to spend 150-250euro.

    PC specs;

    Cooler Master MasterBOX TD500L

    ASUS ROG STRIX B450-F GAMING

    AMD RYZEN 5 3600X - 3,8GHZ

Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB 32GB (2666Mhz)

    NVIDIA RTX 2060 SUPER 8GB

I think those are the relevant bits, if something's missing.. Let me know.

After nearly a year of building part by part, my rig is complete!

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 10:42 AM PST

Greetings, fellow PC enthusiasts! As the title says, I've been buying parts piece by piece and building my new computer over the past 8-9 months. I upgraded from my 3570K and 780Ti which held out longer than I had expected them to, honestly. My final build consists of a 9900K, cooled by a EVGA CLC 360 AIO, in a Gigabyte Z370 Gaming 7 board, 32GB (4x8GB) of Corsair Vengence Pro 3200MHz RAM, 2xEVGA GTX 1070 SC Black GPU's in SLI, all of which is fed by a EVGA G3 750W SuperNOVA power supply. Being newly married and just buying our first home together, as well as wanting to keep my better 3/4's happy, I didn't want to get everything all at once so I decided I'd try to buy used/refurbed where I could. A couple of pictures of the completed build here!

I was able to pick up the Gigabyte Gaming 7 motherboard from Microcenter open box for under ~$100, with the next cheapest open box Z370/Z390 supporting SLI was nearly twice that. Now, everything but the board and the M.2 drive thermal guard were missing so it wasn't as great a deal as it seemed. I bought the EVGA G3 SuperNOVA supply for my prior build when my Zalman 1000W PSU up and quit on me, and I apparently bought the PSU at the right time (June 6th, 2018) because I keep seeing it listed for upwards of $130, when it was only $80 when I got it off of Amazon.

I fully restored both the GPU's as soon as I got them, tearing them down to the bare PCB, cleaning the dusting the heatsinks, taking q-tips with isopropyl alcohol to the fans, and replaced the thermal compound with Thermogrizzly Kryonaut. Since then I haven't had any issues with them over heating, with temperatures around 60-65c while playing GTA V, and closer to 70c while playing Gears of War 5. I realize it'd make more sense to sell the 1070's, and get a 1080Ti, I just didn't want to spend that much all at once (plus, I like the look of the cards in SLI as a single card I feel would make the case look empty, and even though fewer and fewer games utilize SLI the ones I play seem to).

The Asus TUF case was one that I hadn't seen mentioned before, despite being an avid viewer of channels such as LTT, JayzTwoCents, BitWit, and many others on a regular basis. The rugged style, and size, of the case fit perfectly with the aesthetic that I wanted to go with, and I fell in love with it after seeing it one day in Microcenter. I think it balances its imposing, rugged, stylish, and sleek looks while still being a great PC case all at the same time. I feel like the majority of cases now are based off the successful NZXT S340; a small footprint, clear windowed rectangle without a personality, but that is just my opinion.

I replaced all the fans in the system (3x120mm on the front radiator, 3x120mm on the top of the case, and the 1x120mm rear exhaust fan) with the Chinese Aigo DR12 Pro 120mm fans off of Aliexpress for purely aesthetic reasons, and absolutely love them. They've kept my system cool, I run them at 1200RPM at all times and they are dead silent. I'm running a 5.2GHz OC with a +.05v offset on my 9900K and will typically see ~33c idle, and ~60-70c constantly during gaming with brief peaks at 90c. The braided system cables you can see are just some braided cable extensions I got off of Amazon for about $25, the kit included the 24+8 pin motherboard connectors, as well as two 8 pin GPU cables.

I'm incredibly happy with the build, and though it took me a while to piece it all together I can safely say that it was worth the wait. I understand that I am sacrificing thermal efficiency by swapping out the coolers fans since they're speed adjustable and have a higher CFM rating, but I haven't noticed an appreciable difference in performance after changing the fans. I hope you guys like it, let me know what you think!

Hey there folks. I come seeking your assistance. This is my first build in a quite a number of years and a major update on my current rig (6 years old). I am looking at pairing an AMD Ryzen 3700X with a Nvidia 2070 Super to put together a solid gaming computer that should last me a few years before needing updating and hopefully 5-6 years with an upgrade or two along the way.

Notes: I do not have much experience with OCing, but am open to some slight OC on the CPU/GPU/RAM. Right now I was thinking I would give the 3700x stock cooler (wraith prism) a try – unless that seems ill-advised? I plan to put Windows and some other apps on the 500Gb SSD. Games on the 1Tb and media on the 2Tb HDD. I know 32Gb is a little bit overkill, but it's a little bit of future-proofing for me.

    Budget ~$1500-2000 USD

Any suggestions for component swaps or other improvements without drastically changing the approx spend? Also, any sense of what parts I should try to purchase right now versus any others that might be better to wait on for a promo/sale/deal?

Thanks a ton for reviewing my build and providing your feedback. I deeply appreciate it.

What chair for using a pc for long hours would you recommend me?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 11:50 AM PST

I know it's a bit off topic from hardware but, what type of chair is the best for using a pc? I bought less then an year ago a leather one (presidential, not gamer) and it's just destroyed because sometimes I work 18 hours a day for a straight month, so I really used it a lot... the leather is all "broken" and it's making some really bad noises.I tried looking for some advice, most people say gamer chairs but aren't they leather too? Won't it get destroyed like mine? Any opinion would really help.

    Anyway, thanks!

    Edit: As asked I'm a 1.75m tall and 68kg! (or 5'9'' and 150 pounds)

Full hd 240hz monitor or 1440p 144 hz

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 09:04 AM PST

I already have a benq full hd 144 hz monitor and i want to get 1 more.I mainly play cs go and new AAA games.Do you think there is a big enough difference between 144 and 240hz to justify the buy?My gpu can't really do 1440p but maybe i will upgrade in the future.

Alienware AW2518HF-240 hz or Samsung S27R750 -144 hz

MSI b450 Tomahawk Max VS Gigabyte b450 Auros Elite

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 11:15 AM PST

I'm trying to decide between these two mobos, I plan on getting a Ryzen 5 3600. They are in the same price range. I'm curious if there will be any bios issues also. I'm leaning towards the auros based on aesthetics. I really have no plans of overclocking.

Side question will the stock cooler included with the ryzen cpu be enough until I am able to get a better cooler

Is it worth driving to a microcenter?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 08:52 AM PST

As the title states, is it worth my while driving to a microcenter vs buying from online? I've heard sometimes they will have some discounts that you can't get online? I live 2.5 hours from the closest one I'm planning to buy bulk of parts for my first pc build in about 2 weeks.

    Thanks in advance!

Will we finally see a good 1440p 144HZ HDR G Sync monitor this year at CES?

Power Unit to GTX 1660 help

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 12:21 PM PST

Hello, I'm having some trouble with connecting my PCIe cables with my GTX 1660 GPU and making it have a connection to the power unit, I connected the cables together where they should be and when I waited 5 minutes to turn on the system, the bios gives me the "please power down and connect the PCIe power cable(s) for this graphics card" error whenever everything is clearly in place

I'm wondering if I'm missing anything, the power unit is EVGA 850W, and the motherboard is H170 Pro4S w/ 16 GB of Ram and a i5-7500 @ 3.40 GHz processor

    Thank you in advance

    Hi!

Looking into building a PC around the $2,000 range. I'm not very knowledgeable on the topic and would like some advice. I've put together a PC build and would like opinions. Appreciate any help! https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Acharlee/saved/
