    Simple Questions - January 03, 2020

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 04:11 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

    Ryzen 5 1600 AF

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 03:04 AM PST

$85 new for essentially a Ryzen 5 2600. AMD is killing it right now. This seems to me like an insane budget deal. Gamers Nexus has a great video reviewing the CPU

can i just take a moment to say that this community is wholesome and helpful af

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 08:05 AM PST

like, this community is just dedicated to helping people, I've heard such stereotypical things like how "pc gamers are elitist" or whatever but honestly, everyone here has been so helpful and open-minded in literally every way. Nobody here has ever been like, "Wow, your build is stupid, mine is better" like some people think pc gamers do, and overall this community is just great. 10/10

The "so you just got some Christmas money and you want to build yourself a PC but you're on a budget but you still want it to be good" parts list.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 10:04 AM PST

This list isn't just for people who just got some Christmas money and want to build a PC but are on a budget but still want it to be good, but also for anyone who is on a budget and wants to build a PC but still wants it to be good.

With the release of the R5 1600AF, I thought it would be fun to put together a low budget PC build that doesn't really cut corners and will be a very strong performer at 1080p. This build comes out to just shy of $600.

Anybody know how to get a 2nd Gen Ryzen CPU to update Bios on Motherboard?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 01:12 PM PST

I have a Ryzen 5 3600 along with a MSI X470 Gaming Plus coming in the mail. Even though it said in the description that they support 3rd Gen CPU, I've read that that's not true and I need to have a 2nd Gen Ryzen CPU in order to update it. Is there a way for me to get one for free? Or can I go to a store like Best Buy, buy one, update the Bios, and then return it for a refund?

What are the best upgrades for a low/medium end Gaming PC, so that it can run heavy (modded) games like Skyrim more smoothly?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 02:20 PM PST

About 4 years ago I built the PC I'm still using, and it's still doing a fantastic job. However, heavily modded games (I'm talking about you, Skyrim) don't run very smooth. I know this partially is caused by the fact that I simply have too many mods which probably aren't all installed perfectly. But since my PC isn't exactly top-tier I figured making some hardware changes could help as well. The parts:

    CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4460 CPU @ 3.20GHz

    GPU: Sapphire Radeon RX 480 - NITRO+ - 4GB

    RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport - DDR3-1600 - 2x4GB

    Motherboard: Asrock H97M Anniversary

I'm using an SSD for Windows and an external harddrive for my games and mods (the reasoning behind this was that I could play games on my laptop, which I actually never do anymore)

The first thing I definitely am going to do is change the external harddrive for a SSD, unfortunately it seems my motherboard doesn't support NVMe (correct me if I'm wrong!) but a SATA one will do wonders as well I guess. This upgrade probably won't change that much except for faster loading speeds and things like grass/textures loading quick enough in game. So I was wondering, what is the best thing to upgrade? As I mentioned it mostly concerns Skyrim, games like the Witcher run at about 45-60 fps, which I'm fine with. Skyrim sometimes just freezes for a moment and then continues normally (well, don't know if I want to call 25-45 fps normal actually). When playing Skyrim task manager says that 100% of both RAM and my GPU are being used. Should I swap to 2x8 GB RAM or is it wise to buy a new GPU? Or maybe just build a new PC because this one already is "to outdated" for the best GPU's and SSD's? After looking up some stuff online that sure seems tempting :)

Also as a side node, for my studies/job I need to render a lot of images, so anything that boosts my Skyrim playability and render speeds at the same time would be perfect!

Can I build and power up my PC without a case?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 09:50 AM PST

Hello all! All the parts have arrived for my first build!! Well, except for the case. I planned on building it tonight / tomorrow, but New Egg is running behind on delivering the case.

Are there any negatives to building the entire PC without the case for now? I was hoping I could put it together, get into the BIOS and maybe install the operating system and drivers. That way when the case arrives, all I have to do is screw it in and go.

Or should I just be patient and wait for the case?

    Hello strangers of the internet.

Im in the process of building my own case using a wood cabinet that matches my desk.
Now I can't seem to find a panel of sorts with a power button, aux in/out and preferably USB.
See the link below for something similar, but ofcourse i want to find a complete one that i could mill into the cabinet. (and not have to scrap a whole computer case because of it)

    Early GPU purchase

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 12:17 PM PST

Some articles have stated that the price for DRAM used for GPUs is expected or rise in Q1 2020. I am planning on building a PC around the end of April, so would it be worth it to already buy the GPU I'm planning on putting in my build?

Simple question about RTX 2080 super

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 12:13 PM PST

Hey y'all, sorry for a potentially dumb/easy question, but I tried googling a bit and couldn't find an exact answer. I'm currently working on a build with an EVGA 2080 super. I'm getting some new monitors with this build as well, which leads me to my question: how well can one 2080 handle two 1440p, 144hz monitors? I know it can handle two 1080/144hz just fine, but I'm hoping to go with 27" monitors, and as I'm reading more here, I'm seeing that 1440 is truly the best resolution for monitors that size. I just don't want to see a big dip in performance/framerate.

For games, I mostly stick to RPGs -- primarily Skyrim and RDR2, if that makes a difference.

    I need help!

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 02:12 PM PST

Hey I posted a few days ago but got no responses, I'm on the very end stages of making my build, and I'm suffering from second guesses. I was going to get an x570 motherboard for my Ryzen 5 3600x (I got it because it was on sale) because of the ddr4 3600 support which is supposed to be the best ram speed for my card. But I decided I would save a few bucks since I don't plan on overclocking and switched down to the b450 and now I keep switching back and forth. This is where you come in, I need help deciding on whether to save the few bucks and get a b450 with ddr4 3200, or do I go for the x570, and if it's the x570 are there any options below 150 because in this time the motherboard I was gonna get went up in price.

TL;DR do I choose x570 support for ddr4 3600 or b450 for a few extra bucks but ddr4 3200. Also any cheaper x570 options by any chance?

Memory compatibility on ASRock fatality b450 gaming itx

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 02:03 PM PST

Does anyone know if any of these GSkill ram kits work on the ASRock fatality b450 gaming itx? I need 32gb of ram and I really liked the GSkill F4-3600C16D-32GTZN and the F4-3600C16D-32GTZNC but as I didn't see those in the QVL I'm kinda scared to buy without making sure if they will work. My CPU is a Ryzen 3600x.

GPU for 1080p Ultra (+144hz on online games)

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 08:43 AM PST

So I'm thinking of getting a GPU before Cyberpunk comes out in a few months and am happy with my current 1080p monitor for the new future.

What would my best option for a GPU upgrade be if I want to basically max out most settings in most games in 1080p or at least live in the Very High zone for the next couple years? My current card is a GTX 1060 3GB and my CPU is Ryzen 3600 that's starting to have a hard time keeping up with some of the latest titles.

None of my Windows 10 boot drives come up in GIGABYTE’s BIOS. Wondering what to do.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 01:38 PM PST

I finished building my PC today. Booted first time (amazing feeling) and I was wanting to get Windows 10 installed. I had made a bootable drive the day beforehand with the intention of booting off of there, but when plugging it in, the BIOS still says 'No Bootable Device Found'.

I made another one today, same results. I'm wondering if it's an issue with the BIOS or a problem with the USB sticks, or something else entirely.

    Specs:

    CPU: Ryzen 5 2600

    Motherboard: GIGABYTE B450M DS3H

    GPU: Radeon RX 580

    RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengance 3000MHZ

Storage: (forgive me) 1TB Western Digital HDD

PSU: I'm not proud of this either, but it's this 500W 80+ power supply from somewhere in China. (will replace soon)

    Thanks in advance.

[Question] In search of the "best" 1080p 144hz PC build 2020

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 11:18 AM PST

I need your opinion about the 1080p gaming builds. Do you need a RTX 2080 to play 1080p 144hz games? Is RTX 2080 a good pair for i7-8700 or is it a bottleneck?

Look at the build I've made online:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/r9xZQq

Can you improve it? Is it good for 2020? What about the next years?

P.S. Don't hate me if I've added the wrong hardware piece in the list linked above. I'm a laptop gamer for the last 15 years. This will be my first PC build.

    Thank you in advance!

    $250-$300 CPU/Mobo/RAM combo to pair with rx580

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 11:12 AM PST

I gutted the CPU mobo and ram from an optiplex 900, put it into a new case, and put in an rx580 a few months ago, and I feel like its time for an upgrade. I will be using it for strictly gaming and web browsing so I don't really have a need for an 8 core cpu or anything like that. It is also worth noting that I have an aftermarket 500w EVGA bronze PSU. Hey guys, about to purchase. Going to be running 1440p 165hz monitor. I want to run as high of settings at possible. Almost entirely for gaming. Will be looking to create content in the future but will most likely build a second AMD build for that. I want tons of frames and highest graphics that can be handled. I have a 1080ti right now but will be upgrading to a 2080ti in about a month. I will happily listen to anyone that wants to suggest an AMD build. If you guys want to see all parts let me know I'll link. Thoughts?
