    Simple Questions - January 02, 2020

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 04:09 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Turned 16 years old Today and Finished my first PC build last week.

I just want to give a huge thank you to everyone in this community for helping me out and being very non-toxic and friendly to me even with my dumb questions. It feels so good to build a computer and for it to actually work so once again, thanks a ton to you guys.

Why do parts always go on sale right after you buy?!?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 06:48 AM PST

Pretty much the title. Just ordered all my parts for a new build (first one in like 6 years) and of course today I wake up to an email from Newegg for a 2700x for 135, which is just 5 dollars more than I paid for my 2600x. Not a huge upgrade I know, but I would have liked the nicer cooler.. Anyone else get buyers remorse when they see sales like this?

Did I make a bad choice?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 06:15 AM PST

Just like in my last post I have the lynx level 1 from digital storm but the games I run I'm getting like low FPS and with the money I have left I bought a rx 560 was this a bad choice because I feel like I don't see any improvement with the build. I could see that builds that have the rx 560 with like a i3 cpu could run rust and other games fine but I can't ? I have a ryzen 5 3400g is this processer not good enough to run games like that?

Sorry if I have a lot of questions this is my first real gaming pc

If you're not looking for the cutting edge components, right now is a very good time to upgrade.

I built a rig for a friend over the holidays, and thought I'd share:

    That's:

    • A 6 core/12 Thread Ryzen CPU
    • A B450 futureproof motherboard
    • 16GB of DDR4 3200 memory from GSkill
    • 512GB SSD space for Windows + a lot of games
    • 1660 Ti which will give you 80-90fps in most AAA titles at 1080p
    • An amazing tempered glass case
    • A 500W Semi-Modular PSU from EVGA to cut down on clutter
    • An MSI 1080p 144hz VA panel gaming monitor from MSI with height and pivot adjustments (and built like a tank!)

You can also substitute the 1080p panel with a 1440p 75hz panel as the 1660 Ti can handle games like Witcher 3 at 1440p 60 fps with hairworks off. I spent considerably more for a 7700k + GTX 1070 setup just two years ago.

I'd Like to make the Switch. Help a guy out with a build on where to start?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 09:54 AM PST

Hi there, quick blurb - then what I'd like to do with PC/what im looking for. Any help or builds are appreciated!

30 year old - long time console user - intermediate computer knowledge. I'd like to make a switch to PC just because that seems to be where gaming is going in general, and most of the games I can play on my XBOX I can play on a PC. Competitve/Casual Gamer - Love Shooters and BRs. I'd also like to get into some streaming and video editing.. at the very least, the ability to make clips of games and save them for an extended period of time. Game for like 3-4 hours a day. I am also a graphic designer, love colors and customization (go figure). I am a family man, so there isn't a BIG BIG budget for a pc. I'd say my range would be anywhere from $500 - $1200. I've watched quite a few build vids my favorite are from Linus Tech Tips.. So I feel fairly confident I can build one. I just don't know what I need based on my situation and I am hoping that is where you guys can come in and help steer me towards.

Why don’t case makers move the glass to the right side of the case

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 10:16 AM PST

I feel like the clear side of the case should be on the right since most people are right handed and more likely to use the right side of the table for the mouse.

Is it possible to build a quiet air cooled PC for AAA gaming?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 12:12 AM PST

My i9 9900kf cooled with a Noctua NH-d15 and EVGA ftw3 2080 super get louder than I like when under load. I have 6 140mm noctua fans(1 rear 2 top exhaust and 3 front intake) trying to help but I just can't get my parts cool enough to lower the fans. Do I really need to use a custom air cooler on my gpu?

My gpu is stock and runs at 80 degrees under load with 50% fans and my i9 boosted at 4.7 runs ~70 degrees but the noctua barely makes noise so it's mainly a GPU problem.

    ITX Build AIO fan direction?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 09:39 AM PST

Hey guys I'm currently building in an ITX case with space for only one 240mm AIO mounted on the top. I'm wondering since there is no rear fan, should I be making these fans exhaust? Or would an intake be better? In case anyone is wondering, the case is the A60 by Geeek.

Gigabyte or MSI for motherboard ?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 09:53 AM PST

I'm going to make a bulid soon with a Gigabyte 1660super and a Ryzen5 3600. There are two motherboard options in the B450 chipset in my region :
MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC
Gigabyte B450 AORUS PRO WIFI (rev. 1.0)

They are both available for roughly the same price. Which one will be a better fit for this CPU ? (If someone has experience with one of them, or the same brand, how's the linux support for these motherboards ? Are there any other models that you might suggest in a similar price range ?)

    RX 5700 XT on 600W

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 08:51 AM PST

So, I'm thinking about upgrading my GPU to RX 5700 XT Red Devil, and wondering if I need to upgrade my PSU while I'm at it. Recommended wattage according to PowerColor is 750, which seems excessive. The calculator at outervison says that my setup with the 5700 XT would need 430W, 480W recommended. Those numbers are just so far apart that I'm questioning everything. I do plan on overclocking, but I can deal with the factory OC if it saves me the ~100€ I'd have to pay for a 750W PSU.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I was trying to install a Corsair commander pro into my pc to control my fans but it ended up not working out so I just put my computer back the way it was. I never even touched the ram. I turn my computer back on and now MSI Mystic Light doesn't detect my ram. The ram works but the rgb is stuck in it's default rainbow mode. The RGB control in Mystic Light worked since I built the PC back in early december. I don't get it.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem. I have reset the CMOS, I have uninstalled and reinstalled Mystic light (both the standalone and the dragon center versions), I have installed the G.skill rgb software and that didn't work either, I have reseated the ram, switched the ram slots, booted with one stick of ram, used Ccleaner to clean the registries (G.skills tech support suggestion). And probably other things that I forgot to list.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

G.skill told me to RMA the ram but I would rather not do that. I've been happy with the ram and would rather just figure out a solution.

Issues I had from buying refurbished/used products.

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 10:47 AM PST

I was in the process of building a cheap secondary computer. I swung by microcenter and got the 2700x on sale for 130. Bought a refurbished MSI x470 Gaming Pro from nxzt, used evga 850w g3 from facebook marketplace for 65, used xfx rx580 8gb from r/hardwareswap, new d60g spectrix because i thought it was sexy, m.2 ssd i had lying around and a case i had lying around.

the processor, memory were new didn't have any issue

m.2 ssd was from my stock, didn't have an issue

PSU, used, worked like a charm

motherboard was dead on arrival from nzxt. did all my testing to know its dead and tell nzxt support. They have me do some more troubleshooting because they have to. rma it. the next board has a bad m.2 slot and they didn't send the am4 retention brackets. since from start to finish on the first rma was over 17 days. i was like eff it, i dont plan on using another hard drive on this machine, i am not spending another 17 days waiting on another MB. From the issues I had, i would not recommend NZXT for refurbished. Yeah, it was my only time buying from them, but two of their boards had issues and start-to-finish, IMO, was way too long for a rma.

GPU, used from hardware swap and local pickup. the guy told me that he bought it from a miner. hearing all the stories, i have only heard good reviews about people buying cards from miners. he also tells me that the card was crashing on his system. He said he then bought a 5700xt and was having issues with the graphics card assuming it was his system. pick the card up, get it home, wait for my MB to come in. Assemble the computer and run a userbenchmark test. Test runs fine, but the card is showing up as a weird entry in the score, i can't remember what it said. Install Project Cars for my son and can't even get through one lap before the card crashes. Crap. maybe the card is bad. Do some digging, switch over to the secondary bios and flash it thinking that is why it showed up weird in the userbenchmark result. Still crashes. it was getting pretty warm pretty quick and decide to repaste the card. Boy was I in for a surprise.

Anyone that has built a computer and applied thermal paste to a cpu knows that you only apply a pea size amount. well, here is what i found when i pulled the card apart: https://imgur.com/febrlAU. This is a great example of what not to do. I believe the issues that stemmed from this card where because of the over abundance of thermal paste. as soon as the card would start heating up, it would crash again. After cleaning it and applying a pea-sized amount of thermal paste, the card no longer crashed playing video games, no longer crashed during the userbenchmark test, and no longer showed up funny in the results of userbenchmark. the only reason i could think it was crashing was because the thermal paste was conductive and when it would start getting warm, whatever currents ran through the thermal paste, covered resistors would cause it to short out. after the cleaning and repaste, it also ran a lot cooler.

all in all, i built the pc for a little over 400.

moral of the story. if you buy refurbished, make sure you test it within the short (in my case 30days) warranty to verify it works. when applying thermal paste, only apply a pea sized amount and be careful out there when doing local trades/purchases. Meet in public places or a police station. I didn't have any issues, but it doesn't hurt to be cautious.

if you stuck around till then end, thanks for reading. enjoy your pc building and good luck out there!

Build with Ryzen 2700x with RTX2060s, is it worth is?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 09:25 AM PST

    Hi friends,

    Here is ideal PC: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/vNT8Zf

I've never done this before but I researched parts a bit to see what would work well for me. I am wondering if there is any overkill that I could downgrade to save some money as it is over my budget!

I mostly play competitive games like Overwatch, but the real reason behind is to be able to play next gen games like RDR2 as my gtx660ti is getting quite old.

I also have the option to buy an MSI Trident 3 with i5 9400 and a 1060 for 800CAD$. Good bang for buck?

Any advice is appreciated, thank you :)

since 1/2 yrs the pc started to act in strange ways. When the hdd is under heavy load, sometimes the pc freezes. I have to reboot it, and some times when rebooting the pc can't find the hdd (No bootable devicec found error). I'm constrict to change sata port on the motherboard (or just unplug, and plug in the hdd sata connector) to make it work again. And the pc got slow from time to time (for example opening a film on vlc sometimes requires up to 10 seconds, when before it took 5 second maximum (obviously big mkv files)).

Than today my pc wont show the image on monitor (monitor is ok, as it shows image when hooking it up to my laptop) but other peripherals were on (but they kinda booted twice, so maybe the pc wasn't booting properly).

This was a very bad and ruff description, but basing on it, could i just buy a ssd to get a lighter load on the hdd so it won't freeze the entire pc, or could it be just the mobo that is abandoning me?

    Thanks for the attention

Mistakes I made building my first PC (Read this if you're new to building and going to build)

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 11:34 AM PST

    Motivation of this post
I'm making this because I'm incredibly impatient and caused me to spend a lot more than I had to. I'm hoping that I can at least help a single person not make the same mistakes as I did.

    My build

    Component Selection
    CPU Ryzen 3600X
    GPU RX 590
    PSU Corsair MWE 550
CPU Cooler Cooler Master Hyper 212
    RAM Corsair Vengeance 8 + 8 3200 Mhz
    Storage Intel 660P
    Case NZXT H510
    Motherboard x570 Aorus elite

    Mistakes

    1. Underestimating the frailness of the motherboard

When I build this PC I was installing it on a table without any holder at the bottom causing the bottom to scratch and damage. I then pretty ''assertively'' build it into my case scratching the back of my motherboard. I initially didn't buy a cooler and I overclocked the RAM to 3200 mhz. The Motherboard was so damaged that it died after 24 hours.

My tip to you is, install the CPU backpanel first on the motherboard so you don't scratch anything like I did. And do not for the love of god underestimate the usefulness of a different cooler. I know the cooler master 212 isn't the best, but because I had to buy a whole new motherboard my budget was limited. I went from buying a x570-P to an x570 Aorus Elite.

    1. Too much thermal paste

Building this machine I used too much paste resulting in having to buy isopropyl that I wouldn't have had to would I have been careful.

    1. Being too lazy with the manual

The manual is your kingdom, don't be lazy about it. If I just read the manual properly, I would saved myself much more time properly installing everything such as the PSU cables rather than scratching my head wondering ''why I don't have enough pins''.

    1. Buying a non-modular PSU

I love my build, I'm happy about it and I look at it a lot. The only problem is that my build isn't quite eye candy. I didn't think I would care much until I realized how ugly the cables look from my glass panel. Buy a modular power supply with custom cables, even if it is all black. Then place the cables in a position where they make sense and your build would look a lot more appealing.

    1. Being too biased about AMD

I am a big AMD fan, but not always for the better. Let's face it, the CPU's of 2019 were a great leap versus their competitor Intel. I thought buying a RX590 would be great because it would save me money. Had I just bought a GTX 1660s I would have had a much better time because the whole purpose of this build was to play in 1440p at 3 digits (100)hz. Except I can't. Had I bought a 1660s and not be too AMD biased I could have gotten the extra 10FPS necessary.

I hope someone who builds their PC as a first timer reads this and doesn't make the mistakes that I did. Moral of the story, be patients, do your research and remember that your components should be treated with care.

Quadro vs GeForce GPU for mid-level workstation?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 09:59 AM PST

I'm prepping to build my first workstation - primarily for Photoshop and Lightroom ediiting. Some light video work. Some VR gaming.

Now that GeForce supports 10-bit displays like on the entry-level Benq I plan to get, I thought I could save some money by going with the 2080 Super instead of a Quadro p4000.

Before I go this route, am I missing a whole bunch of reasons I need the workstation GPU? My priorities are color accuracy, speed and stability. Later down the line I will want dual displays, the 27" Benq I'm getting now and the Wacom Cintiq I hope to get in a couple years. I won't be doing anything so heavy as 3D rendering over multiple days.

Here's my part list so far: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/xfNNp8

    Thank you!

I just installed a new 2TB HHD on my computer and it's being recognized as a drive but when I go to the file explorer it's not there, I can't seem to fix it
