Posted: 31 Dec 2019 02:21 AM PST When my wife complained about her slow laptop back in August, I had no idea what rabbit hole I would end up submerging myself in. Eager to show off my self professed technical prowess, I played around with a few things like start-up app tweaking, cleaning up harddrives and whatever else I could find online. The result was meagre at best. Some sites suggested swapping a harddrives with ssd's - could that be the solution? I never really did more than buy pre-built systems or in recent years gaming laptops. If there was an issue I'd simply carry it to the retailer or call support. That'll hardly impress the wife so I checked what YouTube had to say about laptop teardowns and had a go. Long story short: in the 3 months (ish) since I've first taken a screwdriver to a computer I've gotten hooked and have completed two builds. It's been a heck of a journey and there's still tons to learn and experience but I'm psyched with having found 2 of my 4 true loves this year. Lurking here has given me ample pointers and ideas so sincerest thanks to everyone who contributes here! Prefacing the specs: I built this system because I needed a win somewhere after a bit of a rough year. Prior to starting I did set a budget and then went on to ignore it completely. It ended up being a splurge beyond any notion of reason and I honestly have to say while I AM proud to call it my own, I do now realise that I (or most people) don't need this. My own rig: Joined the pc builder master race - Lian-Li 011d-xl, - Corsair RM850x, - Aorus x570 Master, - Ryzen R9 3900x (oc all core 4.375Ghz @1.32v), - Aorus RTX 2080Ti Xtreme WB (oc 2.04Ghz core & 14.4Ghz mem), - Trident Z Neo 16GBx2 (oc to 3800Mhz @16-16-16-36), - Aorus NVMe Gen4 2TB x2, - 970 Evo Plus 2TB, - WD Gold 6TB x2, Custom soft tube watercooling loop: - phanteks glacier c350a cpu block - aorus rtx gpu block ("stock") - singularity Protium reservoir, - alphacool eiszapfen fittings, - bykski sensor, - mastercleer tubes (OD/ID is 13/10mm, or imperial: 3/8"-1/2") - 360mm primochill eximoSX slim radiator (top), - 360mm primochill eximoSX ultra radiator (bottom), - alpenföhn Wing Boost 3 High Speed 120mm fans x10 (side & bottom intake, rear & top exhaust) Mods / peripherals: - cablemod modmesh PSU cables, white with white aluminium combs (not in love) - Silverstone es02-usb remote (not installed on this build yet but love it on the second system) - Logitech G560 speakers (nifty and not too pricey) - 27" 1440p Omen 27 display (overpriced garbed, highly advise against) - mouse & keyboard aren't done, my wife got my Logitech G703 Hero + Powerplay mouse mat & G915 keyboard for her HTPC I built and I'll probably get the Roccat Vulcan 122 AIMO keyboard & either Kone Pure Ultra or Kain 202 AIMO mouse to keep with the white theme. Cooling/pasting: I've exchanged the stock thermal pads on the motherboard vrm on the gpu pcb with alphacool eisfläche pads (which was a pricey mod but they seem to do better than thermal grizzly minus 8 pads). For TIM I used either hydronaut or kryonaut on the gpu (I want to say hydronaut because kryonaut felt like a pain to spread but I'm not sure anymore) and conductonaut liquid metal between the ihs and cpu block. Fans are running on normal via bios except PCH which I've set to performance since it bugs my autism that it tends to be hotter than everything else. Loop temps run at 26-27° at idle and plateaus at 32°ish in gaming. CPU runs at 50° with occasional spikes to 56°. GPU is in the 30ies. Negligible. With less of an overclock I could probably run it quiet. Lighting: The lighting is still a bit of a pain since the cpu block uses 4pin 12v rgb while the fans are on 3pin 5v addressable. And because there's simply a ton of fans. I ended up going with a lamptron 10x splitter but the gigabyte fusion rgb app isn't letting me do a whole lot. Should be said that I haven't actually looked into whether the power delivery from the splitter would suffice. Jimmy rigging an alpenföhn 3 fan-controller with SATA power onto the hub didn't seem to work. The front leds on the case aren't working either at the moment since I wanted to control it via the motherboard and did a shoddy job cutting the connector off of the control board in the case and attaching a 3pin with electrical tape. That's going to take some fixing and I'll need to look into one or two controllers I can use instead of the motherboard headers as they otherwise mess up the control of the aorus gpu waterblock and RAM. I highly recommend others to check the motherboard manufacturer's compatibility info before choosing your components, if you want to sync everything via their software. My next project involves learning more about electronics and coding so I can build an rgb controller using arduino. Which is a little frightening considering that in the summer of this year I still didn't even know what 80% of what I just said meant... :-) OK wow that was a lot of text. I'll close by reiterating that none of this would have been possible without the wealth of information you guys have provided. It's very appreciated, even by those like me who don't usually jump into the conversation. [link] [comments]

Advice on dealing with children.. am I too hard? Posted: 31 Dec 2019 07:25 AM PST Ok this a weird post... Me (30) Kid (11) So my brother in law is in town visiting and he has been playing lots of Fortnite on mobile. He got his xbox taken away a while back cause he did the classic rack up $700 in Vbucks on mommy's credit card... After hanging out with the kid for a bit I figured hey if your not active and your gonna spend all day being on your phone might as well go all the way and go full geek. Decided to give him my old gtx 970 and I started peicing together the parts. We got in a few hiccups with the cpu cooler and what not and it took 2 days to build it... technically like 5 hours total having to drill and make some mods... The whole time the kid is just bratting out and expecting me to do everything. Everytime I look away and look at him he is rolling his eyes etc... I called him out.... "listen man when I was your age I had nobody to help me build my first and it took me forever... and I did it when I was 8. Your 11 and you don't know how to download chrome cast... here's the computer I did most of the work for you now spend the rest of the night googling and YouTubing where the cables go... (I still did it for him and got it running) Am I the asshole ?? I don't know how to deal with kids... am I expecting too much out of an 11 year old? How do you guys handle this situation ? Posted: 31 Dec 2019 10:32 AM PST So I have put together the pc, ryzen 7 3700x, 2070 super, 16 gbs Ram etc. all the lights are working on each part and all the fans are spinning on each one. But when I try to plug into the gpu to get video nothing happens. I have tried plugging into mobo and nothing. I have tried display port and hdmi and nothing. Someone please help [link] [comments]
How can I convince my dad to let me build my own PC? Posted: 31 Dec 2019 12:01 AM PST I'm 16, and have saved up all year to build my own gaming PC. My mum doesn't seem to mind, as long as I know what I'm doing, and the parts are from "credible" stores. He has three main reasons why:
I've been skateboarding, but only by myself, and would be out for at least an hour every time, which would normally be every day (however it has been +35°C for a few weeks here, so I haven't been out that much). But even if I'm out for 3+ hours, he'll just be like "wow you've been out for an hour, go out again". So idk.
But when I say that they can last for 5+ years, he asks why I can't just buy "a 2 year old pc" for less money. I honestly don't know what he's trying to say with that. I'm sorry if this is the complete wrong sub (pls point me to a better one if you know of one) Thanks in advance for any help! Here's the part list for you who are interested:

What to look for in a boot drive? Posted: 31 Dec 2019 01:31 PM PST Hey yall, I'm currently in the middle of building my new gaming rig. I have a R5 3600 and G.Skill Ripjaws V 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 Memory. I'll probably end up going with one of the X570 boards, bit not sure yet. For the GPU, I'm shooting for the Sapphire Radeon RX 5700 XT 8 GB NITRO+ Video Card. I'm set on a m.2 NVMe SSD. My main questions regarding them though are: A) is it better to have one dedicated m.2 SSD for windows and a few ancillary programs? And have a secondary storage for games? Or B) is it fine to have one large m.2 SSD for both windows and game storage? Also I hear about DRAM and stuff like that, which is a bit confusing, and I don't see those specs in the SSD descriptions. And if some of you fine people could point me in some good directions for recommended products, I'd greatly appreciate it. [link] [comments]
Posted: 31 Dec 2019 01:27 PM PST Newbie here, hopefully a simple question. Don't know if it has a massive impact on anything or not. I was planning on getting 3600mHz but could save a bit of money if I went lower to maybe 3200mHz. Posted: 31 Dec 2019 02:47 AM PST Are keyboard the only pc part where we get less for more money ? In 2014, I bought the Razer Blackmirror 2014 for 80€. For this price I got :
Today, if I want to stick to razer and want the same specs, I have no option. I would have to switch brand (which is not a problem). The entry level Razer mechanical keyboard costs 130€ and I won't get macro keys, nor audio/micro/usb port. Are we doomed ? [link] [comments]

Computer was in a trunk that got rear ended, need help identifying working parts Posted: 31 Dec 2019 01:29 PM PST My 2 week old computer was damaged in a traffic accident as it was in the trunk that got rear ended. Here is a picture. The front of my meshify-C case is damaged and it looks like my GPU may be damaged. Not sure if the PCIE connected is damaged, got popped off, or maybe the piece attached to the mobo broke off (that slanted GPU doesn't look like good news). The other parts look fine just by a quick eye inspection. I don't think I will risk using the power supply as I believe a slightly damaged PSU can ruin my entire build, but is it safe to test out the other parts in a build? How do I go about doing so other than just putting them into a new build? My build is: AMD Ryzen 7 2700x (stock cooler) MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX Sapphire Pulse 5700 XT Cruicial Ballistix 16 GB 3000 MHz Samsung 860 Evo 1 tb SSD Corsair 750x 80 Plus gold fully modular Any bit of help would be great! I'm trying to see if insurance can cover the computer costs, but if not I will try and go through my Mastercard's assurance policy. [link] [comments]

So many guides so to do a test build before the real one just to test components... Posted: 31 Dec 2019 01:23 PM PST What parts should I be using exactly for that. Broken CPU cooler replacement (AIO in small spaces) Posted: 31 Dec 2019 01:22 PM PST Hiya there, let me say I'm not 100% sure if this is the right place to post this, but I thought I'd give it a try. As my title somewhat explains, I'm looking for an AIO cpu cooler replacement. My husband had gotten himself an Asus G20CI prebuild pc (very sff) However now after around ~4 years (no warranty) one out of 2 cpu fans has broken and his cpu has some cooling issues, I've managed to fix immediate issues by changing the fan curve rather aggressively, however this won't really be a long term fix. Instead, I want to take out the fans and cooling block (sorry brainfart, can't think of the actual name) and install an AIO cooler and simply mount the radiator on the outside. However that brings me to my actual question, seeing there isn't too much space, I am looking for an AIO with a low-profile cpu block/pump, do any of these actually exist or would I be better off building a custom loop with an external pump? Again, I hope this is the right place to ask this and I look forward to your replies. -Seralapph Ps. Happy New Year! [link] [comments]
Posted: 31 Dec 2019 01:06 PM PST Hi there, I recently got an nzxt h510 case and I was wondering if installing a 240mm AIO as intake from the front would hurt GPU performance and if it would improve CPU performance... I've seen videos about this case (GN specifically) where a set of fans in the front actually hurt the GPU temps while barely lowering CPU temps(because of the negative airflow that the h510 is meant for) Would a 240mm AIO be the same case or similar, or would it be better than an air cooler (Arctic freeze esports duo 34e)?? I'm thinking of getting the Arctic liquid AIO Thank you and happy new year to y'all! [link] [comments]

Mainly for cemu/yuzu emulator use which i think (by the youtube videos) sides more to optimize with intel but let me know your thoughts/changes what you would do. thanks. Cooling Capacity Validation and Fan Curve Tuning Posted: 31 Dec 2019 12:43 PM PST OverviewIf there's one thing I hate more than RGB going bananas next to me when I'm trying to accomplish something on my computer, it's fan spin up and spin down noises or simply a generally loud computer. Second to that, of course, is when a computer is unstable, potentially from heat you could have elected to remove. I don't see it talked about much, but proper CPU and CASE fan setup is a huge part of making a rock solid and enjoyable computing experience. DisclaimerThis is how I do it. That doesn't make it right--It makes it how I do it. Comments and alternatives definitely welcomed. The ProblemIt's very easy to hook your CPU and CASE fans up to the 4pin connectors, pick "standard" or "silent" in UEFI/bios, and call it good. In my experience with the last 4 Ryzen builds I have done, this can easily result in the following less than ideal situations.
The SolutionTL;DR: Tune the CPU fan curve so it is acceptably quiet with ambient temps down and doesn't respond instantly to spikes. Tune the case fan curve(s) so they are acceptably quiet with ambient temps down and respond quickly when temps rise gradually due to GPU usage. First Step: Verify Cooling CapacityIt's worth noting that I never do an OS install anymore without first running memtest and passing at least one full test at XMP ram speed. My first step after installing the OS and any drivers is to change the fan profiles at full speed (especially the case fans) and then stress test the CPU and GPU at the same time for 10 minutes while monitoring temperatures. On windows, I use furmark and cpu-z at the same time to stress, and hwmonitor to monitor temps. You should reach a point where the temps level off and you can verify that nothing is getting too hot at 100% on all fans. I say "too hot" because this is up to opinion. A stock Ryzen 5 3600 will get to 95c on the stock cooler, but it will generally not fall all the way back to base clocks in my experience. I personally would like to see the motherboard and SSD temps south of 50 in a full heat soaked load situation. In one case, this actually caused me to abandon the front case fan in preference of a side case fan because it was obvious the front case fan was not injecting cool outside air and was instead simply sucking hot air from the top of the case down the front panel. Lots can be learned in this exercise. Assuming you're satisfied with the temps during a stress test, and nothing got unstable, you're good to move on! Note that sometimes I will do this test multiple times with cool downs to heat cycle the thermal paste to get the best results. Second Step: Determine Acceptable Normal Fan Noise LevelThe goal here is to get a feel for your CPU and case fans and at what percentage you can run them at without it being too loud in general for normal every day computing outside of gaming or other workloads. The way I do this is to hard set my fans at various speeds until I determine what speeds are acceptable for constant white noise production. This is especially helpful for the CPU as it tends to spike a lot and the faster you can run the cpu fan constantly, the lower the eventual spikes will be--meaning you won't hit the "speed up" portion of your CPU fan curve nearly as easily. I like to refer to this as the "normal" fan speed. Third Step: Establish Idle TempsTemporarily set the fan curves all to the "normal" speed you were willing to run them constantly at with a ramp / critical at the very end of the curve that will failsafe go to 100% at critical temps. With all the fans at the "normal" speed, now wait and monitor temps. Once they level off, you now have your idle temps. The motherboard temperature is actually the most critical one here, but it is good to know the CPU temperature as well. Fourth Step: Setup CPU Fan CurveThe way I do this is to pick a temperature that I feel warrants the cpu fan going full speed. For me, this is essentially something like 80 on Ryzen 5 and 7 with the stock coolers. I then set my fan curve so it is running at the determined "normal speed" up till 5-10 degrees before my 100% point, the exact point being based on if I get CPU fan spin-up during web browsing or word processing, for example, which severely bugs me. The thing to realize here is that you can control this window size and where the window is at based on your preference, and the higher your "normal" cpu fan speed is, the cooler you will be idling, and thus the harder it will be to cause cpu fan spin-up while just noodling around with little cpu usage spikes. Remember laptop manufactures like apple will actually thermal throttle in the 90c+ range before spinning up the fans at times! Don't feel bad for pushing your spin-up window up or making it smaller--it's your cpu, and of all the dust packed macbooks I've had that had issues, not a single one had a cpu failure. It's your CPU, not the internet's, and I'm just giving you an opinion. Remember, it's temperatures over time, and your idle temps over time count more than isolated periods of peak usage. The balance is between: Ambient noise, risk of noisy cpu fan spin-up, and how hot you're willing to let your cpu run at before 100% fan. Fifth Step: Setup Case Fan CurveThis one is essentially backwards from the CPU fan curve. The goal here is to detect when the GPU has fired up and has turned the computer into an easy bake oven. The all-important motherboard idle temp we established earlier from "normal" fan speed comes into play here. I like to set my curves so that it runs at the predetermined "normal" speed from idle until 5c over idle temp, then over the course of the next 5 - 10 degrees, I go to 100% case fan speed. This keeps the computer quiet but allows it to go full aircraft take-off mode after the GPU really starts contributing to system heat soak. My PhilosophyI like a quite computer during normal use, but when I'm gaming or doing other intense tasks, I'm fine with the computer being louder THEN. I'm absolutely 100% not okay with "stop light races" where the computer gets noisy for a moment when I load up a web site, especially a thick one with lots of crap coding. I'm also not okay with my case fans being anything less than 100% when the insides of my system are cooking. Memtest + stress test + fan curve tuning is one of those things that costs you nothing, but makes for a very stable, validated, and quality computing experience in my humble opinion. A Word on Fan ChoiceI'm a big fan of the Arctic PWM fans that have PST. The PST fans come with a "splitter" at the plug that allows you to string multiple fans on a single fan header by reading the speed of the first fan and then sending the PWM speed control signal to all fans. This is helpful when you don't have multiple fan headers and you don't want to add another fan controller. My favorite fan is, by far, the 120 PWM PST CO. When stringing fans together, make sure to consult your motherboard's manual in regard to maximum amperage draw supported on each fan header. With support for water coolers, you'll find even cheaper motherboard's fan header load capabilities are pretty capable of 2-3 standard fans with ease. Posted: 31 Dec 2019 12:24 PM PST I know that the Arctic F12 is good for airflow, and the P12 for static pressure and whatnot. But I'm not sure which case fans to get since the H510 has questionable airflow. So which of those two fans are suitable for the NZXT H510? Why are there no functional-only cases without any fancy design impact? Posted: 31 Dec 2019 12:12 PM PST A mix of these: - as little metal as possible= low cost & low weight - one main frame = high durability - exact width of 1x 200mm fans - exact height of 2x 200mm fans - just a rectangle, no fancy design with more $$$ - large hole panels/mesh panels only for high airflow (i'd rather none of them for highest airflow) -1x 140mm+ at the back - only decent cable management plates for better airflow - fan attach ability at the bottom You know what I mean.
