- After weeks of research, I have finally finished (probably) My midrange gaming PC build: One of the best for the price rn imo (theoretically) Initial price: $1600 AUD + ~$400 for some added stuff later (peripherals and extras)
- Electrical Current felt all over the case after turning off.
- Does set CPU affinity when playing games affect anything in long term?

- I'm about to build my first PC. Someone recommended this build to me a while ago, and it fits my budget almost perfectly. (A little over budget, but it will do.) Looking for second opinions before I finalize, and hit buy, though, because this is the biggest purchase I've ever made.
- game not using enough gpu?
- Should I get a 1080p or 1440p monitor?
- Upgrade OS from 7 to 10 then install new hardware, or install new hardware then upgrade OS?
- Am I limiting my CPU or GPU with my MOBO? Should I upgrade?
- I'm too scared to build my pc

| Ryzen 5 3600 and MSI B450 GAMING PRO CARBON AC not booting anymore. Posted: 28 Dec 2019 07:33 AM PST It was working flawlessly for almost a month with XMP enabled (3200MHz), until one day it suddenly turned off while it was setting on the desktop screen doing nothing, after that i tried to turn it back on but CPU Debug LED continuously For the sake of time i'll just list what i did try :
All of this didn't even get the PC to post or display anything while all the fans and RGB seemed to be working normally. Notes:
At this point i think i ran out of options and the only solution is to return or replace this motherboard, besides i noticed while searching for solutions that this problem hits MSI the most so i'll be avoiding this brand in the future as this was my first PC build. My PC specs:

I noticed that when doing the parts test outside the case with the stock cooler CPU temp was 44c. Once I put everything in with the 360mm AIO my temps jumped to 60c. I assumed a bad paste application and took the cooler back off only to find the plastic still on the block. tl;dr; I didn't follow the instructions because I knew better, but I apparently didn't. Thinking of pairing the R5 3600 with an MSI B450 Tomahawk Max and 16gb of Corsair Vengeance 3200 Mhz CL16. Thanks in advance! Edit - PC is used primarily for gaming at 1080p 144hz. Budget is around £400 for CPU, motherboard and RAM. My PC seems to struggle during CPU intensive games, can stutter and usaully sits at 100% on all four cores. I've read that eight core CPUs will be more suited to the next generation consoles so it is worth getting a 3700x over 3600? [link] [comments] |
| PLEASE secure your important data with the 3 copy rule Posted: 28 Dec 2019 12:24 AM PST I STRONGLY recommend buying a 500gb hard drive, putting everything important on it like login information, documents, photos, projects, and anything important on it. Additionally, buy a USB drive and put everything which is especially important to you on it. The logic behind triple backup is that you're almost guaranteed to have one storage failure in your computer's lifetime - and lesser so double failure on a backup drive. However, if you have everything also on a USB, it's VERY UNLIKELY you will lose your data on all 3 sources before being able to back it up again. I recently lost all of my FLStudio music projects and was fuming over it. I bought an SSD based Corsair Voyager GTX USB 3.1 storage device, 128GB with fucking crazy read/write speeds and am very very pleased with it. The best $40 I spent in my life aside from my current 500gb SATA SSD (I bought the USB on sale). Back up your data, people. You'll thank yourself later when one or two of your drives fail. Here's the link to the $50 Corsair Voyager, the fastest USB drive on the market (to my knowledge, I'd be happy to know about faster ones because I want more). This drive looks very clean and feels amazing to hold, it's way larger and heavier than you expect - about 250 grams aluminum housing and about twice the size of a standard flash drive. | Posted: 28 Dec 2019 08:35 AM PST I'm posting for two reasons; to see if it can be improved, and to possibly give people planning to build soon a decent sample. I will talk about all my decisions but you don't need to read that, I just want to elaborate as I'm pretty keen. CPU - Ryzen 5 2600X: The upgrade to the mid-range king. I only went for the X instead of the normal one is because of a good local deal, but otherwise, go for the value; R5 2600. Obviously Intel is out of the picture for this price range. CPU Cooler* - CM Hyper 212 RGB black: The cooler will be bought later to get the pc faster. In the meanwhile, the stock cooler will be used. I will only overclock (moderately) after getting the 212. This cooler has lots of value. Averaging almost a 20 degree drop from the stock cooler at less than $60 AUD, it's arguably the best budget cooler, and perfect for me as I will not OC very much. The design is also slim, all black, and with decent RGB it actually looks good too. You also get control of the speed, and RGB functions. Overall GREAT cooler. Thermal Paste - Noctua NT-H1: A very solid thermal paste. Can stay on CPU for three years and there is enough for multiple applications, it's also not electrically conductive and can be easily applied. You could also go for the H2 for 9 more dollars if you want to drop temps even more (2 degrees). Mobo - MSI B450 Tomahawk Max: This is probably my most contested part and there is a lot to go through here, but to keep it short I'll list some of the reasons I got it and some of the reasons I might get something else. Reasons for; Cheap, USB 3.0, Upgradable to series 3000 Ryzen with no BIOS. Against: Only 1 m.2 slot, B450, no wifi or bluetooth. RAM - TYPO, supposed to be: Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200hz 2x8: Not much to talk about here. Reliable company, standard 2x8, 3200hz is best value to speed for mobo as of time of writing. SSD - HP EX920 1tb: There was a lot of options here, 860 evo, MX500, Crucial P1 and more. But this drive is probably some of the best value in the whole SSD market rn. It outperforms both the MX500 and 860 Evo by more than 200% in r/w speed and only costs 10-30 dollars more. It only performs slightly better than the P1 but the P1 cannot handle larger data transfers, has a decent hit in performance when drive is nearly full. It also degrades faster. So all-in-all the HP EX920 is clear winner. GPU: - 1660 SUPER Gygabyte OC: Pretty much the best mid-range GPU, depending on preferences and budget, you could save some money on other parts of the build to get a 2060/2070/5700 but I'm fine with this. Case - Phanteks Eclipse P400A Digital: This one is all about preference. I was between this and some of the NZXT 500 series cases but I decided I liked this aesthetic a bit more. Both options have good airflow, cable management and aesthetics. PSU - Corsair RMx (2018) 550W Gold Fully Modular: Widely regarded as one of the best PSU's it has an average price, gold efficiency and its fully modular. You could get something cheaper but I'm very paranoid to the PSU blowing up the whole system so I'm happy with this one. Got a bit of extra wattage in there to have room for OC and I read somewhere that PSU's run more efficiently if the power draw is not close to the max output. (My terminology isn't the best, I know..) From this point on its completely up to preference Monitor - AOC C24G1: The cheapest 1080p, 144hz, freesync monitor. It also has a pretty good response time (Advertised G2G RT is 1ms but I'm slightly sceptical). It's also curved and has pretty thin bezels. The red on the bottom might be a turn off. There is also a 27inch model which I'm considering, but have been told that 27inch doesn't look good at 1080p. Keyboard* - Corsair K63 : Will be bought later as I already have one. I have tried this keyboard as a friend has it and I just love the feel and looks off it. The price was good so thats how I made that decision. Mouse*: Logitech G502 Hero: This is the most uncertain piece of hardware on the list. I don't really play MOBA's nearly as much as shooters and this mouse looks like it's better for moba's. I like the shape, the adjustable weight and the programable buttons but I feel like something lighter with a bit less buttons would be ideal. I was also pondering at the thought of a wireless mouse but they are a lot more expensive. I'm a claw style grip with average hand size and don't mind a mouse with a bit of weight but I'm not too sure how heavy the G502 Hero is. Headset + Mic* - Phillips SHP9500 + V-Moda Boompro: Won't get straight away as I already have a headset (It's trash but it works). This combo has been featured in many videos because of it's sheer value (value really is a recurring theme huh) I have tried the headphones and they are NICE, great sound, light clamping force, big earpads and an open-back design is perfect as my ears always get hot. The open back might be a turn off for some though. The mic sounds great but my only concern is that it will pickup the noise from my keyboard. Speakers* - Creative LabsPebble 2.0: Will be getting the last as they are not necessary. Just a pair of neat little speakers if for some reason I don't want to wear headphones or want to play sound out loud. QUESTION, will I need a sound card? If so, what are some recommendations. Thats it. If you read that whole thing then I just want to appreciate you, and I'm happy to receive any feedback or recommendations. I could post how I'm going to optimise performance and customise the PC if anyone is curious but I doubt anyone will want to continue reading what I write about for a while. [link] [comments] |
| Electrical Current felt all over the case after turning off. Posted: 28 Dec 2019 06:53 AM PST Hi, its been a 3 days since i've finished my build. I can't seem to pinpoint the culprit. It will only come up when i turn off the pc, then turn of the switch in power strip. Maybe the pc is not grounded well, since i live in a country where the outlet are just 2 pronged outlet. I'm using adapter on my power strip with a 3rd prong. Is this an 'okay'? What do you suggest i'd do to remove this? EDIT: Its just tingly feeling, not a ouchy ones. It's a badly-optimized game so it needs some "special" setting. I intend to follow this guide and set CPU affinity on the game to get better performance. Will this harm the age of my CPU? | Posted: 28 Dec 2019 10:15 AM PST For context, 3 years ago i built a pc with an ace 650w power supply for the last year i have ben running a i5 9600k in a Gigabyte z390 UD and an rx 460. A few days ago i upgraded to a gtx 1080 gaming x 8gb from msi and worked fine using a 6 pin pci power from the psu and a dual molex to 8 pin pci power. Today i could smell a burny smell and my pc shut off. Now when i turn the psu switch on the leds on my mouse and keyboard turn on like they did before with the psu on without the pc itself on However when i press the power button the led on my pci wifi expantion turns on for a brief moment and turns off, no fan spin or anything. I initially thought my psu was dead but now im thinking about it i am slightly confused. What could have happened and what can i do from here as if the psu has died what has died down the pipeline? I'm just not sure of the order that I should do things. A: Upgrade from 7 to 10 with current hardware installed. Then replace hardware after I confirm Win 10 is running. My budget is around $600-$700, and I'm aiming for 60fps on high settings and plan on using it for mostly indie or non intensive stuff (rocket league, rimworld, Tf2, etc.) any more intensity stuff I'd be willing to turn down to medium settings.
