    Simple Questions - December 27, 2019

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 04:11 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

    PC won't post.

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 04:32 AM PST

Hello people of thgis subreddit. I was currently building a new pc and I seem to not have success. I have tried switching the PSU and the computer still wont post but all i recieve on my monitor is a "No Signal" sign. I have tried using a different HDMI cable but still no success. I have removed the battery of the motherboard for 10m and I have also reseated every single part of the computer. It's very demotivating for a first time builder and my friend was struggling so he said i should come here for help.

    My parts are:AMD Ryzen 3 1200AMD Wraith CoolerCorsair Vegenance (2x8) 3000mhzASROCK B450M-HDVMSI RX 580 (OC EDITION)The 2 PSUS I've tried areEVGA 600W 80+ WHITE and a be quiet! 400W (Think its 80+ BRONZE)1TB SEAGATE HDD120GB KINGSTON SSDBitfenix NOVA case

Edit: I have located the issue, which was my motherboard, and have ordered a new one. Going to keep the thread open to not stop traffic but thanks for all the help! First time using this subreddit and I really enjoyed the support and how kind this community is. Will be back soon with a finished pc :)

How did I find it was a motherboard problem?

I found out it was the motherboard because my friend came to help troubleshoot and everything worked but when using the mobo it didnt load. All the advice on this thread is very good advice though and I hope for people to find this since the community really came to help me and I'm really thankful! Thanks r/buildapc!

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 07:38 AM PST

Here are the parts I selected. Pcpartpicker doesn't have a price for the GPU but since I am in Europe I will order from a different site anyways. My total comes to 1450€ which fits nicely in my 1500€ budget.

So am I good to go with these parts or did I miss something crucial? Could I have made a big improvement with not a lot of more money or is this good for the budget? Thanks in advance :)

EDIT: I have two other hard drives from my old system with Games and Movies so the 500GB M2 will be for the OS

EDIT: Thanks a lot for all your advice. I have switched out the Motherboard for an MSI B450 Tomahawk Max since I was assured it would work without BIOS updating. Does everything else look ok?

Final Edit: I ordered the parts listed above. Thank you all for your advice. Really looking forward to building it

Headphone amplifier messing with USB keyboard power.

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 07:20 AM PST

Hey all, I have a weird problem going on with a recently acquired headphone amplifier.

Basically, soon after turning on my computer, I power on my headphone amplifier. More often than not, as soon as I do this, the RBG on my keyboard cuts out and the keyboard disconnects/becomes unrecognized by the computer until I unplug it and plug it back in.

When I power off my computer and then turn my headphone amplifier off the RBG on the keyboard lights up again (after turning off while the computer is powering down).

For reference, these are the two products in question:

Keyboard: Anne Pro 2 Headphone Amplifier: Schitt Magni 3

Not sure how rational a fear this is, but my biggest concern is that the headphone amp is pushing power back into my motherboard for some goddamn reason and something is going to fry.

The Anne Pro 2 is a bit wonky a keyboard in my experience anyway, so maybe it's to blame.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks y'all.

Just because a CPU isn't at 100% usage, doesn't mean it isn't bottlenecking.

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 12:15 PM PST

I see a lot of posts on Reddit where people say as long as your CPU isn't at 100% usage, it isn't bottlenecking. That's incorrect, though. Say for example, you have a 10 year old 6c/12t LGA 1366 i7, but you play a game which doesn't use more than 4 cores. It will not be fully utilized, but it will still be holding back the GPU. A better way of checking is making sure your GPU is at 100% usage in my opinion.

Hi! Can I get input/suggestions for my first build?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 11:19 AM PST

I'm starting to research/compile a parts list for my first build. Please be gentle as I'm still learning! But I'm open to any and all suggestions. I think it may be overkill, as I really only play things like Planet Zoo/The Sims lately (currently a laptop user). But I'd expect to play other games with a PC which is why I'm trying not to buy only the bare minimum.

I'm also curious, how does Corsair RBG with work NZXT? If I'm choosing the NZXT case is it easier/better to stick with NZXT for anything with RGB?

About to upgrade to RX 5700XT but I’m worried about the stability problems people oft report

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 02:47 AM PST

For the build I'm going for would suit the RX 5700XT beautifully, but I see a LOT of people complaining about driver issues, Black screens, crashes and general instability and so forth. People who own or know about this card, how bad are the issues? Have they been fixed since released and are they more common certain cards? Thanks

    Wraith Prism RGB control

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 12:20 PM PST

This took me way too long to figure out. I thought I would share my experience in case anyone else is having trouble getting full rgb control of your wraith prism.

Use the usb cable, do NOT plug in the rgb cable. Download the wraith prism software from AMD. Enjoy.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.* Gaming mostly.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Looking for 1080p 60FPS ant moderate settings. This will be my first gaming computer so not looking for anything crazy.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    600-700$

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

How dangerous is a blackout for my PC? Should I buy an UPS?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 08:29 AM PST

Am I right in picking the 2080S over the 2080TI?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 12:52 PM PST

Building a new PC and picked the 2080S as my GPU. I couldn't justify the price difference when the 2080TI can't even max out some games at 4k/60 fps. My goal is to play Cyberpunk 2077 at 4k 60fps with RTX on so by then I imagine the "2080TI Super"or whatever will be out then. When that happens, I can sell my 2080S and buy that card. What do you guys think?

My main setup is a 1440 144hz monitor, but I also have a nice 4k OLED TV which I will game on from time time.

Future proof CPU, unusual prices. What would you do?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 01:53 AM PST

What would you do? I need to update a 6600K rig. But Prices are probably not what you would expect in your country. A Primary game rig, priced ROUGHLY under $700 for board and CPU.

(GPU is a 2080, Ram is Ripjaw 3000Mhz and both wont be changed)

    CPU PRICE
    9700k $450
    9900K $612
    9900KF $578
    3900X $645
    3800X $447
    3700X $399
    3600 $219

Need ideas for cable management as well as changing GPU color!

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 01:21 PM PST

I have almost finished my build but need an idea of which cables I'll need from CableMod and how to better manage those cables to have them either not showing as much or not at all, also I'm trying to find a glossy or metallic fire red engine paint for my GPU housing but I'm having some difficulties. Any ideas?

Critique wanted! All-Rounder build - With expandability

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 01:10 PM PST

Looking for suggestions on a build for all-around work. I do photo/video editing, work with VMs, and gaming, mainly. I want speed and expandability for future upgrades. Storage isn't something I'm worried about at the moment, the SSD is in there as a placeholder. I would really appreciate suggestions.

    Here's my current idea: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bPNBvW

I'm currently using an MSI laptop as a desktop (i7 6700hq, 16gm ram, 1070) and It's not keeping up as well as it used to.

New graphics card needs a different build?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 01:10 PM PST

I have recently changed my old ATI Radeon R9 200 series for NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB to get a better performance in games, especially the demanding SW: Jedi Fallen Order.

Unfortunately it did not help much and some games are even running worse. I am now wondering why is that.

I am thinking whether the motherboard/processor/RAM are unable to support the new graphics card?

    My setup:

Intel Core i5-3350P CPU 3.1 Ghz, 3101 Mhz

    Motherboard - H61M-C

    8 GB RAM DDR3

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB

I would very much appreciate some advice on why the upgrade of the graphics card did not help.

    Thank you.

Not a clue what I'm doing, send help

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 12:53 PM PST

So I'm planning out what I want for my future PC that I'm saving up for and it'll be my first gaming PC. I've got no idea what I'm doing but I think I'd probably be up for trying to build it myself if it means it'll be cheaper. It can't be that hard, can it?

Anyway. Could I possibly ask for some of you to send me your suggestions for what to get? As in, that website where you can pick all the parts and see how much it comes to etc.

I'm looking for a PC that plays games like The Witcher 3, Total War, maybe a little bit of Battlefield etc pretty well. Noticeably better than console is my objective here. I think I'd spend at least £1000 ($1300~), and £1150 ($1500~) at my absolute maximum. Although, I do kind of want to be able to play some of the next gen stuff that'll come out this decade though so if I need to take longer to save and spend more to keep up please give me some advice about that too.

    Thanks for the help

    Questions about 2070 Super

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 10:06 AM PST

    Hey.

I'm buying 2070 super. Just wandering do you guys prefer Evga FTW3 Ultra Gaming or MSI X Trio? I live in Europe so EVGA services not as great, sadly.

I'm just wandering is there a difference between them? And is there a difference in 2 fan or 3 fan gpu?

Also looking in to gygabyte gaming, msi gaming x and evga XC ultra gaming.

Just want to hear your opinion which one should I choose, what + & - of them are, OC capabilities and fan loudness.

    CPU Upgrade

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 12:46 PM PST

    Hey,

so early this month i decided to upgrade my CPU and therefore also my RAM and Motherboard. I ordered the parts you suggested and got them for christmas. Today i switched the parts and everything went smooth as fuck. So i just wanted to say thanks for all the good suggestions and the helpful answers!

Here's a comparison between my old CPU and my new one. Quite a change. Not to forget the 8GBs more RAM and the switch to DDR4.

    Thoughts on this upgrade?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 12:23 PM PST

I'm upgrading my pc next week and figured I'd post the specs here so you all can give your opinions on the matter:

    Current specs:

    i5 7600k, GTX 1600 6GB, 16GB RAM

    Upgrade:

Ryzen 5 3600X, RTX 2070 SUPER (trio fan), 32GB RAM

The ram is just a bonus, I don't think it's that necessary to be honest. But overall, I think the upgrade would be pretty good for 144hz gaming, am I right about this?
