    Simple Questions - December 15, 2019

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 04:10 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

My thank-you post - an update on the PC you guys helped my to build for only $20.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 08:26 AM PST

    Hey r/buildapc!

Just about two months ago, I posted a thank-you to several people ( u/techmanjoe, u/goblinrum, u/torymid, u/l3ggomycraigo, u/Gibby1560, u/bobsmth93, u/Plainzwalker, and u/SauceOverflow ) for their help and extreme generosity in helping me to put together a build on a highly limited budget. I had many kind responses to that post and several people offering me parts. I now have two more names to add to that list: u/FeralSparky and u/smurfsriot, who have given me an HD 7870 and 32GB of DDR3 1866, respectively. Additionally, I would like to thank u/techmanjoe once again for his willingness to go above and beyond to help me with issues I was having, to the point that he even refunded (That's right, refunded) me (completely unprompted, and in my opinion not necessary) for the motherboard and processor due to a faulty ram slot, halving the total spent on this pc, from $40 to $20. I owe more thanks than you can believe, and will be forever grateful for the kind acts of all of these generous Redditors.

    ----------(\/) Build Updates (\/)----------

As for the case, I still haven't bought or made a transparent side panel, nor have I gotten RGB anything. For the time being, I have left the side panel off, as you all told me that would be fine.

Additionally, you all told me to rotate the cooler 90 degrees for better airflow. I initially thought that was impossible, but I looked closer and found I actually could. I had it running nicely, but the fan had a tiny rattle when placed vertically which turned into a roar and drove me crazy. This does, unfortunately, mean I'm out a fan on my 212, but I'll make do until I get a new one.

Unfortunately, ASUS says they can't ship me the IO shield, so I guess I'll have to deal without one until I get a new board.

I do still plan to eventually put in a better WiFi card and a sound card, but it's not really a top priority.

    ----------(/\) Build Updates (/\)----------

Below is an updated list of parts I have in use.

Upgrading my PC from AMD FX 8320

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 12:40 PM PST

Hey guys, not on reddit to much but I will be checking back into this post to see if anyone helps!

    PC SPECS: CPU: AMD FX8320 8CORE 3.5GHZ

GPU: AMD R9 380 4GB graphics Not sure what other specs are needed.

I just got into PC gaming finally after I have been dying for a gaming PC and Its been 2 years now this Christmas... My PC is pretty good when it comes to all "AAA" games that are optimized. It struggles with games like "Squad" and "Escape From Tarkov" the games that don't have millions behind them to focus on optimizations. I know Optimizations have a lot to do with how well a game actually runs, no matter what system Specs you have, "Squad" runs horrible compared to the game it was actually modded after, "Battlefield" I can play BF all day long at 70-80 FPS with settings on high, but get 20fps during some "Squad" moments, along with some other games... my GPU isnt that bad, its a R9 380 4GB. I have 16GB RAM, and I think what slows my gaming down is my PCU. Which is what I am trying to upgrade. I have a AMD FX 8320 8CORE, tho it says its a 4 core with 8 logical processors... which I am still trying to understand the differences between logical processors and the core processors. I'm still really new to all this. I made the mistake of buying this PC from "Cyberpower" and it cost me like an extra $300 I didn't have to spend, Paid $700 for it and had to put a R9 380 4GB GPU, and a new huge PSU to give it enough power. The PCU is the only thing I haven't upgraded yet. As I said I am such a Noob to this that I paid a guy at a PC shop $80 to put in my Graphics Card because I thought it was super hard to do. I recently thought all you needed was to buy a CPU and installing it is easy, but I see you need a whole new motherboard? before you can replace the AMD FX 8320 with a Ryzen or something better. Sorry for the long paragraph, if anyone reads this please let me know if you can help give me some ideas or tell me what I need to do to upgrade my AMD FX 8320 8CORE. I am tight on money, so I won't be able to afford anything serious like the I9s and newer ones. I am looking for the cheapest upgrade possible, while it still being a noticeable upgrade for gaming.. which is 98% what my PC is used for unless my Grandmother needs to use it to pay bills and stuff

    Monitor not posting

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 10:55 AM PST

I was building my first PC, but I got some thermal paste on the side of the CPU and cleaned it off with isopropyl alcohol. I tried to test it out just in case to seen if anything was broken by trying to go into bios.

The motherboard and gpu lights up and everything, fans are spinning, but the monitor can't pick up a signal. Is the cpu broken then, and is that why the monitor isn't posting?

What CPU should I upgrade to?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 12:06 PM PST

I currently have a Ryzen 5 1400, and am looking to upgrade my CPU. I'd like to stay around 150-200$ for the new processor. Right now I'm looking at the 2700X or the 3600X. I have the ASROCK AB350M, so I know it has a compatible BIOS update. Anything else I should know about the upgrade, or whether either of those options are better than the other?

Cheap, but decent mobo for Ryzen 3600, and RAM compatibility.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 09:13 AM PST

Hi!I'm planning to buy a Ryzen 5 3600, and i have some questions.

1: I want a cheap, but decent mobo. I want it to be microATX, and with B450M chipset. I found this: ASRock B450M Pro4. I think it's decent, but there are some things on it i don't need. I only need one Pci-e x16 slot, and i only want regular USB 3.1 ports on the back panel.

2: I have 2x8 GB RAM already, and i don't know if it's compatible with the processor or not. I heard there are some problems on AMDs side with this. The RAM modules are Kingston Hyperx HX424C15FB2/8.

3: A decent microATX casing. Unlike people nowadays, i don't want any RGB. So nothing fancy just a functionating microATX house, that has maybe 1 fan in it. It can be the cheapest as long as i can put 2-3 HDDs, and one SSD inside. I want something like Deepcool wave v2, but with a fan inside, and 2 3.1 ports on the front. I don't necesarry need a 5.25" i have a writer but i dont use it anymore.

    Thanks in advance. :)

Gtx 2080 ti no signal on hdmi

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 08:10 AM PST

Hey, a friend is building his pc with a gtx 2080ti and his Motherboard is a msi mpg z390. Without the gpu the Computer boots (no OS is currently installed so we come until the boot menu), but as soon as we put the gpu in the "error led" is showing a problem. The LEDs and fans on the GTX 2080ti are working but we still get no Signal. Wr already tried to use a different cable from the psu to the gpu (vga 1 and./ Vga2) with no success. Any ideas how to get it working?

    Gpu for 1080p gaming

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 03:42 AM PST

    Hi,

two years ago I built myself an office pc, but now I'd like to upgrade.

    Current components:

    • i3 8100 4x3,6 GHz
    • 8 GB RAM DDR4 2400
    • 275 GB SSD
    • AS Rock Z370M Pro4
    • 300 Watt be quiet Pure Power 10

I mainly want to replace my PS4, so no high end gaming required.

It's already planned to replace the current 8 GB RAM with 2x8 GB DDR4 3000.

Additionally I finally want to add a Gpu. I'm from Germany and the Budget for the Gpu is 200 €. I tended to a RX 5500 XT (8 GB) or a 1650 super (4 GB), hoping to be able to keep the current power supply. Do you think 300 Watt is enough for that? Or should I upgrade the power supply to maybe 500 Watt and get a cheaper RX 570 or 580 (both 8 GB)?

And would you choose the 5500 XT or the 1650 Super? The 8 GB of the 5500 would provide some backup for future games, but I read everywhere that it's heavily overpriced and can't compete with the 1650 super.

Any other suggestions are also welcome!

Is it worth it to buy an older GPU?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 01:37 PM PST

I have a decent for it's time setup, with an i5 4590 and an R9 270 OC. The most recent game I've tried to pay is Rage 2, and it doesn't run very well. I'm not even that interested in ultra settings or anything, I just want to play the games I want. The next big one I'll be interested in will be the new Doom.

Mid next year I'll be able to afford a new setup that will center around the latest generation i5 and I'm interested in the RTX 2070 Super. I've looked up the 2070 and as I suspected, by CPU will bottleneck it.

But in the meantime, I see that the upper cards of yesteryear can be bought rather cheap.

    GTX 7080

So, would something like this be worth it in 2020? How much longer would you predict my current setup could run the latest FPS titles, or the odd third person game like the Tomb Raider series, with this added?

    Build Help:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

    Strictly for gaming

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

At Bare minimum I would want 1080p 60FPS on max settings but would want the potential of going to higher frames or resolution. Also getting the machine to be VR ready if possible.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Trying to keep it around $1000 (USD) but am flexible if certain parts are worth it.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    United States

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    Best 144hz monitor under $200?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 12:28 PM PST

Would I expect much gaming performance if I changed my 3400g for a 1600/2600/3600?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 12:14 PM PST

I would personally like to get the 1600 because I love the price but I would like to know if I would actually see a performance increase with any of them. I know the cores increase from 4 to 6 with these and idk if that matters much for gaming either. I have a 1660 ti in my build.

Hardware components suggestions for building a linux smartphone : project ARA diy

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 05:12 AM PST

    Hello,yesterday I found this project :

    https://www.hackster.io/news/build-your-own-smartphone-with-isquare-mobility-s-diy-kite-kit-e432012dfa7f

and I have immediately fell in love for it. I would like to make something like that,BUT with some differences. Which are these differences ? Well :

    1. I want to install Linux instead of Android. Maybe Ubuntu touch ? or ? do u have any other linux distro in mind ?
    2. I want to upgrade some hardware components like the mobo, since that kit is 2 years old.

So,my questions is : can you suggest to me some new hardware component to help me to achieve point 1 and 2 ? Regarding the screen,I want to change the "5" 720p touchscreen module" suggested on the kit with the screen used on the Blackberry Passport, that I love very much. I wait with anxiety your suggestions. thanks.

    Which GPU would you pair with r5 2600x b450 Tomahawk 16gb 3200mhz

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 11:22 AM PST

    What graphics card goes best with r5 2600x, 16gb 3200mhz and b450 Tomahawk.. currently running a rx 470 4gb.. do I upgrade? I play Esports @ 1080p 144hz (60hz 2nd monitor).

logicalincrements.com has the 2600x paired with a gtx 1650 super/1660 ti but I'm skeptical because I'm not really a Geforce guy. Is that much of an improvement for the price? Linustechtips endorsed the 1660 super, but was saying maybe wait for the AMD 5500 cards or get a 1070 used off ebay.

    Or I could get a 570 4gb for like $120. Or I could get a 5700 for $300.

I'm super budget oriented, wanting purely bang for buck. What do you guys think?

Soon building a new PC, but waiting for Ampere for GPU. Used RX 500 series a good placeholder?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 11:21 AM PST

I know the 500 series (and some from 400) are excellent for price to performance (at least the 570/480), but I want to make sure that I can get good performance (at a low cost cause it's temporary anyway) while I wait for my true upcoming beast.

This is somewhat what my build might look like, but it's not final. I find it likely that I'll switch PSUs.
