    Simple Questions - December 10, 2019

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 04:09 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Just wanted to put this out there in case someone comes across it and is in a similar situation to me

My desk isn't big enough for my tower to sit on so I was looking for some type of computer stand. The generic ones on Amazon won't really cut it and the one from Ikea that hangs off your desk is too small so I found this on Ikea. Works perfectly as a tower stand, and I drilled a hole in the back so I could route all my power cables through and have the power bar sitting in the cubby, nice and neat. Some pics.

PC turns on but no signal to monitor

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 06:30 AM PST

    https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/sxXwcq

This is my second pc build.

It boots up all fans spin - no mobo sound, though cpu fan spins. There is no signal to monitor. I've tried moving the RAM to the first slot, but the AMD cpu fan is so cluinky and big it blocks any RAM that would fit there.

Also I can't turn it off by clicking the off button.

PC No Long Recognising SSD and HDD after fresh windows install on M.2 SSD.

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 10:52 AM PST

As the title says, after purchasing a Samsung 970 Evo NVMe M.2 SSD and installing a fresh copy of windows on it, my machine is now no longer recognizing my HDD or SSD I was running off before (SSD has a windows copy on it).

The MoBo I'm using is ASUS B350 PLUS, anyone has any ideas as to what could be happening?

PC noob ( havent used one in about 6 years) what do i need?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 01:33 PM PST

Haven't used a desktop in about 6 years a laptop in probably two and my mum randomly offered me one to share for christmas. We were at PC World and the guy suggested two different things this gaming PC:

    https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/desktop-pcs/desktop-pcs/pc-specialist-tornado-r5-amd-ryzen-5-gtx-1660-gaming-pc-1-tb-hdd-120-gb-ssd-10195687-pdt.html which has

    AMD Ryzen 5 3600 Processor

    RAM: 8 GB / Storage: 1 TB HDD & 120 GB SSD

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 6 GB

190 FPS when playing Fortnite at 10

And i know what none of that means

But he also offered i think it was this:

    https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/desktop-pcs/desktop-pcs/lenovo-ideacentre-510a-15icb-intel-core-i5-desktop-pc-256-gb-ssd-black-10193248-pdt.html

    Which apparently has:Intel® Core™ i5-9400 Processor

RAM: 8 GB / Storage: 256 GB SSD

    Or maybe :

    https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/desktop-pcs/desktop-pcs/lenovo-ideacentre-510a-15arr-amd-ryzen-5-desktop-pc-1-tb-hdd-128-gb-ssd-black-10181025-pdt.html

    Which apparently has:

Achieve: Fast computing with the latest tech

    AMD Ryzen 5 2400G Processor

    RAM: 8 GB / Storage: 1 TB HDD & 128 GB SSD

Graphics: AMD Radeon RX Vega 11

The guy said it was basically the same as i said i would want to do 3d model rendering, general coding and also playing a few games as well as general stuff and the salesman said the second one could "probably" play fortnite With a monitor that looked bulky and a colour backgroud lit keyboard and mouse which my mum liked. She was offered the gaming one for around £1048 and the "normal" was like £7-800

Thing is im unemployed and a carer for my mum who's disabled and i dont want her ripped off. What does everything mean and what do i need and where can i get it where its easy to set up?

A big thank-you to this sub; got my build up and running!

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 11:56 AM PST

Apologies if this doesn't fit in the rules, just wanted to pass on my gratitude to the users here and the Simple Questions thread didn't seem appropriate.

I didn't comment much on this sub, if at all, as I had no idea what I was doing and wanted to gather as much info as I could without bothering people with seriously basic questions. But after lots of scrutiny here and help from friends IRL, I ordered some parts and they all arrived last week. Built the PC in two sittings over the recent weekend and it purred to life on Sunday!

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone on this sub, all the info and opinions, links and advice you were offering each other helped immensely and turned a project I wanted to do, but was dreading, into something really fun and honestly quite straightforward to do. With Black market Friday sales I kept within my budget of $1600 and built something that suits me and my use well.

Thoughts on upgrade before I purchase?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 07:42 AM PST

    Hello!

I'm upgrading my pentium build for Christmas and as It's only 2 weeks left before Christmas I need to start buying my parts.

    The build I put together is;

    https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/XJ94Mc

I'd really appreciate if you guys could give me some feedback on this build! If there is anything I should change or anything I should add (my budget for the upgrade is £800, so I have room to add a thing or two!)

I wanted this pc to be a productivity/gaming build hence the 3700x.

I will be gaming, streaming, rendering, photoshop for art and photo editing and eventually some video editing and Cad. (Games I play are pretty varied, but i'd like to be able to comfortably play at at or above 60fps 1080p-1440p)

Note that the items I marked as purchased are just excluded from the budget (i'm buying peripherals after christmas, same with the 2070s, I already own the seagate hdd)

Thank you so much for any help! I really appreciate it and it's gonna save me a lot of stress haha! Hope you have a lovely Christmas everyone!!

Couple questions on new GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 08:25 AM PST

Just purchased a GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER GAMING OC card and was surprised to see it only has an 8 pin power connector. I thought maybe something was off, but after looking at the 2060 Supers on Newegg, it looks like almost all of them have the 8 pin connector and the Nvidia Geforce page itself for the 2060 Super only shows 8 pins on the card. Are they just super efficient? Seems odd that my old, slower card required 8+6 but this much more powerful card only needs 8. Granted it has been almost 10 years since I have purchased a new GPU.

Also, there is a white LED right above the power connector that is on. According to Gigabyte's website, this means that the power cable is disconnected. Obviously it is not, as the card is recognized by my system, and I ma able to benchmark it. Any thoughts on that. Should I just ignore it?

And of course RGB fusion doesn't work, it won't even recognize my card, which again, according to Gigabyte's website, this card should have RGB. But after searching the web, that sounds like a pretty common problem. I dare say RGB on Gigabyte cards doesn't work on more cards than it actually does work on.

Help! I need to upgrade my rig to go Back to the Future!

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 02:18 PM PST

It's time for a major upgrade for my PC. I have a nVidia 1070, Intel i5 4690K, Corsair RM750x and an MSI Z97 Gaming 5, plus SSD, 16 gigs of RAM and so on. To bring my rig to the future (or at least the present) I want to change MoBo, CPU and RAM, I think the othe components will do.

I want to base the new config on AMD and was thinking at a Ryzen 7 3800X to have a powerfull PC even for non gaming related activities, 16 GB of DDR4 RAM and a fancy new case. Now, the real question is: to keep the upgrade under 900 (I'd prefer just a little over 800 if not less) euros, what motherboard and what memory should I get? I don't want to spend too much but I don't even want to bottleneck a CPU like the 3800X... And to keep the system scalable I'd look into newer platforms and techologies like the X570 chipset. For the case I wanted something clean like the Thermaltake View 71 TG but it isn't cheap (around the same I spent for my old one, a Coolermaster Trooper), for the MoBo I saw the "cheap" MSI X570-A PRO, but is it up to the task? I'd prefer ASUS but they are a little more expensive for the same chipset (and that makes me think twice about the MSI one). For the RAM I just don't have any clue, what frequency should I get? Does it really matter?

    tl;dr

    I want to upgrade a: nVidia 1070, Intel i5 4690K, Corsair RM750x , MSI Z97 Gaming 5, and 16 GB of RAM PC

what I looked into: AMD Ryzen 7 3800X, MSI X570-A PRO, 16 GB of 3200 MHz RAM and the Thermaltake View 71 TG

I'd really like to be around or under 800€, any suggestions? Do I make sense or have I gone mad?

Thanks in advance for any help and suggestion, much appreciated.

    New pc won’t display

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 11:40 AM PST

This is my first pc build, some friends helped me out. This is a list of my parts:

Motherboard: Aorus B450 Elite Gpu: GTX 1660Ti CPU: Ryzen 5 2600 Case: Kolink Stronghold Mid Ram: 2x 8GB Vengeance LPX DDR4 Storage: HDD WD 1tb, SSD Kingston 240gb Psu: Corsair TX750M

I've put everything together but get a no signal screen. The cpu, dram, vga and boot light turn on red one after the other and then turn off. I don't know if it's meant to light red or not. I've checked the monitor is fine the hdmi cable is fine. I've tried connecting the hdmi cable to both the gpu and motherboard but get the same result. I've reseated the ram and get the same.

The case comes with two reset switch wires, so I only plugged one in but I doubt that has something to do with it.

Could anyone help? I've looked online and asked some friends and I don't know what's wrong.

    Constant GPU Clock

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 01:43 PM PST

Hello. I am currently using an XFX RX 5700 XT (1 Fan) It has not been overclocked in any way, however, I switched the stock thermal paste with dedicated paste. I want to get the advertised clock speed of 1605mhz, however, I'm not entirely sure that Wattman works with anything except the fan speed. How would I be able to get a constant 1605mhz or at least when I'm gaming. *It would also be nice for these settings to be activated upon Windows startu Thanks a ton

RX580 8GB - Low frames on lowest settings

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 01:24 PM PST

I'm getting 70fps in rocket league at the max AND lowest settings. This just started happening after I kicked my pc after trying to get out of my chair. It used to sit at 144fps.

Now I'm experiencing very low frames, and sometimes the screen freezes for 5-10 seconds randomly.

    Upgrading Prebuilt, Where to start?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 06:30 AM PST

A few months ago I was looking to build a PC, however I found a great deal on a Prebuilt that was cheaper than what I would have paid for the parts individually. It's performed great so far, but I was hoping you fine folks would help me identify where my money is best spent on upgrades.

    Here's the build:

    PCPartPicker Part List

    Type Item Price
    CPU AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor $189.99 @ Walmart
    Motherboard ASRock B450M-HDV R4.0 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard $59.99 @ Amazon
    Memory G.Skill Aegis 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory $59.99 @ Newegg
Storage Team GX2 512 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive -
Video Card MSI Radeon RX 5700 8 GB Video Card $319.99 @ Best Buy
Case Rosewill SPECTRA C100 ATX Mid Tower Case $59.99 @ Newegg
Power Supply EVGA 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply $76.98 @ Newegg
    Wireless Network Adapter TP-Link Archer T6E AC1300 PCIe x1 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi Adapter $34.99 @ Amazon
    Monitor BenQ GL2780 27.0" 1920x1080 75 Hz Monitor $126.50 @ Adorama
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
    Total (before mail-in rebates) $948.42
    Mail-in rebates -$20.00
    Total $928.42
    Generated by PCPartPicker 2019-12-10 09:27 EST-0500

Here's a list of where I feel my money might be best spent (though I'm not sure of the priority). :

Motherboard: It's just a cheap low end board, nothing particularly wrong with it that I know of, but may be limiting in the future or for other upgrades.

Cooling/Overclocking: Currently it's just stock case/card fans with the stock CPU cooler, which makes me reluctant to overclock the CPU/GPU as it's something I've never ventured into before.

SSD: The 512gb 2.5" drive it has is great for mass storage but it's sustained speeds leave a lot to be desired. My current board does have an unused M.2 slot.

Display: Upgrading to 1440p/144hz presuming my system can handle it. (Which I think it should be.)

Do i need the extra 4 pin CPU power cable?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 01:15 PM PST

I currently have a EVGA 700 W 80+ Bronze and want to pair it up with a MSI MPG Z390 GAMING EDGE AC. The PSU doesn't have the extra 4 pin CPU power cable, only the 8. Do i need them or will the build run fine?

    Build:

    Intel Core i7-9700K 3.6 GHz

EVGA CLC 280 113.5 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler

MSI MPG Z390 GAMING EDGE AC

    Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory

EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 8 GB SC GAMING ACX 3.0 Black Edition Video Card

EVGA 700 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply

PCpartpicker says the build will take ~414 Watts. Thanks for looking at my post!

    Order to upgrade parts in.

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 10:58 AM PST

I'm thinking about upgrading some components of my PC for better gaming. I'm a complete noob at upgrading a PC. Currently my rig has:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/GfRDZf

Moving forward, though, I'm not sure in which order I should go to yield the biggest ROI. Would a better CPU be a better investment than a graphics card (assuming a $300-$400 price range for either)? Would a nicer GPU be useless until I improve my CPU? And lastly, for my current monitor I use a basic 60 hz refresh rate TV. Would none of the aforementioned improvements make considerable difference until I upgrade my monitor? Basically, I want to improve all three items over the course of the year, but I'm not sure in which order I should begin improving.

What temperature is safe for a cpu?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 01:06 PM PST

I have an i5-8400 with a stock cooler. It hits 80-85 celsius when been gaming for over 10 minutes.

Just replaced the thermal paste, still no better temperatures.

Are these temperatures safe for continous use, if not, what should i do?

Ryzen 5 3600 Temps Too High?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 01:01 PM PST

*LAST THREAD I MADE DID NOT WORK*

I recently purchased my new PC and here are my specs: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/MoronicLouie/saved/YW8r6h

The 3600 is in an MSI B450M MORTAR MAX m-ATX motherboard

Idle, the CPU is averaging around 50-60 degrees

My CPU voltage is on AUTO in MSI Command Center, and still avergaes 50-60 degrees

What voltage is it supposed to be idling at?

My core keeps fluctuating between 1.076 - 1.384V on idle, isn't that too high?

Is that what's making my CPU 60 degrees on idle?

The settings being on AUTO are supposed to keep the voltage low on idle?

Really confused, my old Intel i7 would average at 0.768V and stay below 40 degrees at idle.

Any specific settings in the BIOS or COMMAND CENTER I should put in for AMD?

This is my first AMD processor and I'm using the stock cooler and thermal paste that was supplied.
