This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

First time building a computer, 1000$ budget

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 06:20 AM PST

I'm thinking about building my first computer but I don't a lot about it. I made a list of parts with some internet search and need an opinion for them. My objective is to make a gaming computer for 1000$. I'm looking to play racing games (like Assetto Corsa Competizione) and action games (like Far Cry 5).

Unpopular opinion but still asking for advice: I prefer chicklet style keyboards to mechanicals, so is there a favorite or recommendation for gaming/productivity?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 06:33 AM PST

Edit: to clarify a little, the issue basically twofold: (a) I prefer the feel and typing of apple-style chicklet keys, and (b) I find that nearly all mechanical keyboards have keys that are just too close together for my fairly long fingers.

My build is waiting on nothing other than a case, and I'm driven to insanity watching all these videos and reviews for days at this point

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 06:38 AM PST

    Hi all,

My build/upgrade consists of RTX 2070, Ryzen 7 3800x, Gigabyte x570 Aorus Elite Wifi, 16 GB trident ram 3600 Cl16, EVGA PSU. I am ready to build except for the case.

This is my 2nd build (since 2015) and so I want to spice it up a bit by adding RGB (as opposed to my current build which lacks RGB completely). I also ideally want to take advantage of the USB-C front header that comes with my mobo. For a while I was sure I was going for the NZXT H510 elite, till I saw GamerNexus review about it's thermals. I really do want the front fan RGB design, but at the same time don't want to fry my parts. I will not be doing liquid cooling. I looked at the Phantex P400a, but it doesn't have a USB C and I read reviews about how its material is rather cheap. So I just don't know anymore. Can anyone guide me a little? Ive been watching and reading reviews for days at this point and it's very frustrating. Didn't realize the most difficult part to get for me would be the case.

What I'm looking for in a case: Transparent side panel, RGB fans, decent thermals, decent quality, USB-C/decent I/O.

I have a budget of up to $200

After I finished the build and powered it on, I got a code 55, which is ASUS for "memory not installed". I have tried the following, all to zero success:

    • Tried every combination of RAM slots possible with 1 and 2 sticks.

    • Reseated the CPU and confirmed no bent/broken pins. Ensured cooling block was secure, but not too tight.

    • Ensured memory DIMMs were not damaged nor were pins on the mobo.

    • Confirmed RAM is on ASUS' QVL.

    • Cleared CMOS, updated BIOS using the Flashback feature.

I assume it is possible both sticks of RAM are bad, but I find that improbable. Unfortunately I don't have any known good DDR4 sticks of RAM to test with. The RGB feature of the memory works, but that doesn't necessarily mean the memory chips themselves are good.

I've built many systems over the years, and this is the first time I've run into a situation like this and I'm not sure what else to try. This is why I'm posting here asking for assistance. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated. If anyone needs more information, I am more than happy to provide it.

EDIT: I have tested booting with a known good stick of RAM and the issue persists.

I need a mouse for a *very* large hand

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 02:44 AM PST

So I use the Death Adder currently for FPS games and I do own a Logitech G600 MMO mouse, and while it is my favorite, the threaded cord for it is very stiff and the sharp edges of it are quite low and scrape against my mat. I play with very high sensitivity, so I just couldn't do that anymore. I do appreciate a place to put my ring finger and pinky, however.

My fingers are very, very long. The Death Adder is great save for the fact that the rest of my fingers and palm rest primarily on the gaming mat under the mouse, and inhibit a lot of movement from being smoother. Are there any mice you guys know of that may be as large as a G600 but have a much more expensive build quality for FPS gaming? I've just about had it with trying to play Siege with the Adder.

    EDIT

Thanks for all the comments guys! I'll seriously be considering all of your suggestions.

My hand is 8 inches in length and 4.5 in width

need help! new pc wont boot!!

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 01:47 PM PST

hi! PC noob here! I need some help.

So basically I have built my very first pc. Only problem is, it refuses to boot. I looked up some troubleshooting videos and using the power of elimination I thought my cpu came dead on arrival. So I replaced my cpu and it still won't boot. The mother board leds are on which means it has power. I bought a extra fan on accident when ordering my parts and I have also tried using that fan for some reason to make sure it wasn't the other fans.

Can anyone give me some tips on what I should do? My cpu has intergrated graphics which I think means it will boot with or without a gpu (i have a gpu.) So I don't think its the gpu. I'll leave my parts down here just in case there are instructions specific to some parts :)

    Mother board: Prine b450-A

    CPU: ryzen 3 3200g

    GPU: xfx radeon rx 580

    power supply: 500 watt EVGA

    I think thats it!

anyway thanks for reading, anything helps!

An 11 year olds first system

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 12:58 PM PST

Getting a pair of systems together for my kids, youngest is 11 and my budget is really £300 per system (with a little stretch.)

I have the SSD/hhd already so repurposing these.

I've tried to balance CPU/GPU as best I can. I keep wanting to go for the 3400G, but by going with the 3200G, I can include the xfx 570 8GB GPU.

My thoughts are that another 8GB ram is an easy future upgrade.

My other option is to drop the GPU, go for the 3400G with a future GPU upgrade.

    1080P 144hz or 1440P 144hz monitor for build?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 08:20 AM PST

    Hey all,

I'm looking into purchasing a PC very soon ( either will but components to build or looking into a PowerSpec G706 from MicroCenter at the price they have on sale right now ). Ever since 2 days ago I was looking into getting a PC for 1080P 144hz gaming as I had bought a monitor for my PS4 Pro to use while also be able to hook my future PC into. I wanted to play games at 1080P Ultra res. And hit 144fps in most games.

However, yesterday I was in MicroCenter and seen a 1440p monitor on display, and now I'm torn between keeping my monitor or exchanging it for a 1440P 27" monitor! The monitor I have is a MSI Optix MAG27C and do I would probably just get the 1440P version.

Only thing is I believe I won't be able to use my PS4 on a 1440P monitor from what I've read.

Is it better to keep my Full Hd monitor and game at higher fps (144 max due to monitor ) or get a 1440p display and game at like 60-100 FPS ( so far the build I'm looking into should be hitting those number ? Is there much difference between the two that's noticeable when it comes to resolution on a 27"? I know the display I seen yesterday seemed very clear and all but I didn't have my monitor side by side to see the difference.

VR build, Intel or AMD? I’m torn.

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 11:12 AM PST

So I'm going to be building a PC mainly for the Valve Index, however I will still want AAA/multiplayer games at high frames/nice settings.

I've been reading through tons of posts on various subs and also looking at benchmarks and just can't decide between something like an i7-9700k or Ryzen 7 3700x.

Is the slight decrease in frames but increase basically everywhere else with the Ryzen worth it or should I go for all out gaming stability/frames with the i7, especially when it comes to the Index?

    Gpu core clock at minimum

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 12:37 PM PST

    Cross post from r/overclocking

I was messing around with overclocking my GTX 970 whilst playing Rome 2 Total War, using Zotacs overclocking tool.

All was well, now I am getting severly reduced FPS (10-15) when it was 60+ before.

The core clock monitor says the clock is not going above 200, but GPU utilization is 100%.

If I alt tab out of the game my GPU clock will jump and start working again, but as soon as back in the game it drops along with fps.

I seem to get better/normal fps in battles but it also fluctuates heavily when it wouldnt before.

Double Build for my brother and I! Budgets are $1000 and $1300

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 10:20 AM PST

I've only built 1 PC before so I'm a little nervous and wanted to double check that everything looks good. Just wanted to make sure all parts are compatible as I'm not sure how accurate pcpartpicker's compatibility function is.

    $1300 Build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/YfkHGc

This will be a higher end gaming/streaming build. The goal was 144hz 1080p gaming on high or ultra for most current games. I'm concerned if the cpu fan will be good enough or what I should look for. I chose the Ryzen 7 2700X for better multitasking for streaming. I already have a mouse and windows for this one. Any advice is appreciated!

    $1000 Build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/PrPDZf

This build is solely focused on gaming performance. It will be my brother's system and he doesn't care about how it looks. He just needs 1080p 60hz for all current games so it gave me more flexibility with the budget.

I appreciate any advice or even just confirmation that they're good to go. Hopefully we can get these built by the end of the year :) Thanks.

Would it be possible to upgrade my Dell laptop to support 3 gHz? My guess would be no but I have 0 hands on experience so I wanted to ask.

DESKTOP-4310AIR i5-2430M CPU dual core 2.4 gHz Intel HD 3000 GPU Upgraded it to a 6gb ram Dell 01HXXJ A05 Motherboard

Been using this laptop for about 3 years. My buddy got it broken and fixed it up sold it to me for cheap. I love it but it can't keep up at all visually. My connection rocks but my FPS is averaging at 12 or so.

So, is she worth the effort or do I retire her to a common scroller and save for a more modern setup?

    Edited to add motherboard

Question about fans and airflow for first time builder.

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 01:47 PM PST

    Hi all,

First time I'm building a PC and have bought myself a Cordair iCUE 465x RGB case which comes w three fans at the front of the machine and have also bought myself the Corsair H100 Premium CPU cooler which comes with x2 120 fans and radiator. I have also bought another corsair 120 LL fan to sit at the back of the case.

My confusion is how to determine the most optimal air flow and understanding how the fans will face.

I know the 3 fans that come w the case sat at the front will push air into the case and that their direction is fine. Should I then have the radiator pushing the hot air out at the top of the case and the same for the 6th fan which will be at the back? Or alternatively should I have the top fan and rad pushing cool air into the case with all hot air being pushed out the single fan of the back?

Another confusing point for me is understand which way the actual fans should face! Are their always instructions and directions for this in the boxes / instructions which will tell me which way the fan will which air which direction?

Apologies if this is simple stuff but I can't find my answer.

    Thank you!
