    Simple Questions - December 02, 2019

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 04:15 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

USPS does a Santa Letter adoption program where you can choose a kid's letter and respond to it and/or send gifts if you choose to. Found this absolute gem from a future serious gamer.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 08:41 PM PST

    Letter here.

Really wanting to help this kid with at least one part.

Edit for those thinking it's a con: My wife's first reaction was the same and I firmly believe a dose of skepticism is healthy. So let's assume worst case scenario it's a scam and I buy this kid (adult?) a part or two. I've contributed to something that I believe to be an admirable cause-a kid looking to get into PC-building and tinkering. A kid who wants to BUILD something themselves rather than buy it and have the work done for them. A kid who clearly isn't asking for top of the line shit and just wants parts to build a damn PC.

If it goes to an adult instead, then well, I've still done a good thing with admirable intentions and if that's how someone scams me out of $30 or so dollars, then so be it, I guess. But fuck that person and may karma rain down upon them.

If you think it's a scam by me, please, by all means have a look at my post history.

    Push in your RAM

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 08:30 AM PST

I cannot stress this enough. I spent an hour trying to see why my PC won't boot properly. It turns out that I didn't fully push in the RAM. When you're inserting RAM, make sure that the RAM lock thing (the thing you have to lift to insert RAM) snaps into it's default position on its own. If it doesn't do that, you need to apply more pressure.

What's the deal with SSDs that go in the PCI slot? Should I do that? I've always had SATA SSDs in my PC builds...

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 05:45 PM PST

I'm buying all the parts for my build and noticed there are SSDs that go in PCI-E slots. I'm confused - are these for desktop PCs or for laptops? And is that a good option? Or should I just get a normal SATA SSD?

In case it's relevant, the motherboard I am getting is the ASUS ROG Strix B450-F.

****edit: My questions have been answered and explained already in the comments. Apparently something called M.2 is what I was thinking of, and specifically the benefit is in NVMe M.2 SSD cards, which are really fast. There seems to be debate as to whether the speed is actually very noticeable at all. But I bought a 500GB Samsung 970 EVO M.2 NVMe SSD card and am gonna give it a try. I can report back!

Video output works with GPU but not with motherboard outputs.

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 01:20 PM PST

I recently built my new PC and immediately found that the video outputs on the motherboard don't seem to be working. But when I use the GPU outputs it does work. The only reason this is a problem is because my second monitor doesn't support HDMI and my motherboard has DVI and VGA. All the other USB and Ethernet ports work. Just not the video outputs. I looked up this issue and found that people were saying to enable iGPU, but I couldn't find that anywhere in the BIOS.

    Here is my build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rnTwgJ

I would really appreciate any help I can get.

Buddy giving me another 1080ti to SLI, need to upgrade 650w PSu do I go 850w or 1000w?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 10:02 AM PST

PCpart picker saying estimated wattage at 814. Is 850w cutting it too close? Corsair has discounts so was planning on getting the RX850w but do I need to look at 1000w?

    Building for a Coworker: Ryzen 7 2700X vs Ryzen 5 3600

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 12:02 PM PST

Hey all, sorry in advance for broken sentences/typing errors I'm typing this on mobile and my battery is really low so I'm rushing.

I'm building a PC for a Coworker, his max budget is technically around $2000 but he would like to spend less. He doesn't game yet but plans too later casually, he wants this to be a solid home PC for 5+ years.

Intel is basically out of the picture as the price to performance just isn't there and I've rounded it down to the Ryzen 7 2700X and the Ryzen 5 3600. My issue is that I don't want to buy a R2 mobo with an R3 CPU to avoid the BIOS update which means I'm stuck on the expensive X570 motherboards for the R5 3600.

Going with the R5 3600 will cost about 80$ more than going with the R7 2700X, the question is, is it worth it?

Here's the parts list so far if anybody has anything else they would like to add, thanks in advance. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/4q9TYH

I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I'm a bit lost

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 09:50 AM PST

So I used to build my PC's back in my teens/early 20's and I was always up to date on trends. Then I sorta just fell out of practice. The last system I built for myself was a Pentium 4 and I couldn't even tell you what the hot graphics were at the time. Since then, I've had the fortune of having higher end machines fall into my lap via work that I made some small upgrades to - more RAM, bigger HDD, better graphics.

So fast forward to now and my HP Xeon workstation which I had intended to repair and setup as a server but ended up making my primary gaming rig has after almost 6 years grown long in the tooth. I mean it still plays well, I've got a GTX 970 card in there and it handles Call of Duty WWII pretty well but I figured it was time to build myself a decent budget gaming rig and turn the workstation into the server I originally wanted it to be.

To that end, I did a little bit of research and bought a bunch of stuff this weekend to build my new box. I tried to stay within a modest budget as I don't have the amount of disposable income I had back in my 20's. So here's what I bought:

AMD Ryzen 7 2700X processorGigabyte B450M DS3H mobo16GB of RAMMSI Ventus XS GTX 1660 6GB DDR5 gfx card.G.Skill 1250PS platinum rated. This was a bit of overkill I know, but the price point was good. I'm still looking for a PS in the 750-850W range but everything I'm seeing that's fully modular is way more expensive than what I paid for this PS.For storage I had bought 2 Crucial 500GB Sata III SSD drives last year on some flash sale Newegg was having with the intent of upgrading the drives on my workstation but never got around to using them.

So I've got all my components and I was planning on using my old P4 case but to do so I need to replace the fans in the case. They're all very old and only have molex power connectors. There's no way to attach them to the motherboard for monitoring and speed control. So looking at fans, that sent me down the rabbit hole of LED fans and now I'm thinking about having some fun with this build and put in some color. That leaves me with some questions because adding colored light to your case 20 years ago was buying a cold cathode tube and sticking it into your case and there was no controlling it without opening up your case to flip the switch. My old case had two intake fans in the front, two exhaust fans in the back and one fan that you could use either way in the side panel directly over the motherboard. I had it setup as a third intake since the PS was at the top of the case so the fan was acting as a third exhaust pulling air up and out the back. This motherboard I bought has only two fan headers on the board - one for the CPU and one for the system. I've been looking at fan controllers to expand how many fans I can use simultaneously. I looked at the Corsair iCUE Commander Pro, but it seems that this kind of slaves all the fans to the one header and when you adjust one, you adjust all of them. Is this the only way that there is, or is there a fan controller that can control each fan individually off one motherboard header? If I wanted to get LED lit fans, do I need to get a specific controller that will handle that? Is there a controller that can change the color of the fans depending on the temperature in the system? I'm probably not going to go with an elaborate color setup as it will probably take me over how much I'm comfortable spending but I would appreciate any info or point me to online resources where I can learn about this. If I know more about how this setup would go, I'd be able to properly price out what would be needed and if it wouldn't put me too far over budget I might go with it.

    Thanks in advance!

    Build Help:

Replace this text with your answer.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better. Gaming mostly, also probably run a small home entertainment setup. I have a loft condo and I'm thinking I'd like to combine the TV/computer in to one. Please let me know if this is stupid.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I like playing CIV so lowering turn time would be nice, I think I'll be able to run basically anything else I want to play on the intended build. Probably stuff like Witcher, Far Cry, stereotypical shit.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

I don't have a fucking clue. I think I'd like to keep it under $1500 but I also just spent more on the CPU by a few hundo than what's recommended so here we are.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    US

**Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). This is a super fungible list.

Okay, so here's the deal. I've been thinking about building for probably 5 years (was waiting until the i52500k came out to start at some point - if that tells you how much of a procrastinator I am). Anyway I put together a pretty basic theoretical build based on the ryzen 5 3600 and was waiting to see what sales would happen today. Because I just can't help myself I poked around and saw ryzen 7 3800s were only $120ish more so why the fuck not right?

So questions: first of all this is the outline for the build I previously made, I've updated the CPU to reflect the new one but I'm not sure what I really need to do here. Questions:

CPU - I see this one comes with AMDs attached "wraith prism LED" cooler. Should I still get a separate CPU cooler? Is the AMD one sufficient or a total piece of garbage?

MOBO - I really don't know a damn thing about these and it's hard to find a nice summary of what I need to know. I narrowed it down to one that's x570 but really just because that seemed to be the newest thing, I'm not sure if it's necessary or even beneficial? Lots of the MOBO help I see out there is geared towards standard size boards and I'd like to do a compact build so I'm a bit lost there.

GPU - Thoughts? I don't really know much about the various manufacturers of a given GPU. Like I'm reasonably sure the RTX 2060 is plenty of juice but what should drive the decision between say a Gigabyte card or MSI? Also should I roll with a different one?

Case - I picked this one because it's pretty compact and Micro ATX. Should I just go with Mini ITX and a smaller case? Would my build even fit in there/would I have heat issues? Would that limit my ability to upgrade later? I'm not particularly hung up on the standard tower look anyway so if there's some other completely different sort of case I can look at I'm open to suggestions.

Also any other red flags that anyone sees?

Lastly is there any good resources on learning about Monitors vs TVs and which would be best for my needs? TVs tend to be a lot less expensive for the size and resolution but I understand that has some drawbacks - if anyone has a guide to that sort of thing I'd love to see it.

    Thanks in advance everyone!

    I think I Got It!

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 11:54 AM PST

So I have been wanting to build a pc for a long time and I think I got exactly what I want for just under 2,000 dollars. I just want to make that I don't run into any issues.

    Link: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bVscHB

1.) Is my gpu and monitor setup okay or is it unbalanced, i.e to high or low end on the gpu etc.

2.) How can I make sure that I get the right wattage for the Power Supply. It says its estimated at around 414 but should I just get a 550 watt power supply?

3.) Is there some easy guide that will help me actually build it?

4.) It says there is an issue with the cpu cooler. It might not be compatible, I am just not sure if the fans that come with the cpu and gpu will be enough. I dont plan on overclocking but i do want to take care of my system and keep its longevity so any advice would be appreciated.

5.) I am a little confused as to the wired network adapter. Not sure if it comes with one or it is just an upgrade. Will I be able to connect to the internet without one? and which one should i get?

Thank you and have a great day!

I'm unfamiliar with the trusted brands that make PSUs. If someone could tell me, that'd be great. Also, my build only requires 409 Watts according to PCPartPicker, but I want to get extra just in case if I want to upgrade in the future.

Completed Smallest AMD Micro-ITX I could build

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 01:05 PM PST

Finally put together my Micro AMD build. Still trying to figure out how to squeeze as much power out of it as possible, but I think I am pushing it. Wish I would have gotten the 3400G, but I already had a 2400G laying around. Not sure it is worth the extra money to upgrade?

    My build components:

    1. MSI B450I Gaming Plus Mini-ITX Motherboard
    2. AMD Ryzen 5 2400G Processor
    3. Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3200
    4. 2X Crucial P1 500GB 3D NAND NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD
    5. M.2 NVMe SSD NGFF to PCIE 3.0 X16 Adapter M Key
    6. Morex 557 Universal Mini-ITX Case
    7. Noctua NH-L9a AM4, 37mm Premium Low-profile CPU Cooler
    8. 2X Noctua NF-A4x10 FLX 40x10mm
    9. Mini-Box picoPSU-160-XT High Power 24 Pin Mini-ITX Power Supply

I built this PC to be a compact Steam / Retroarch Box I could attach to the back of my TV. I was pretty impressed that I could fit a low profile M.2 adapter into the one PCI-E slot which allowed me to run two independent SSDs for dual booting. It is currently running Windows 10 and Linux. Performance isn't amazing, but it works great at 720p-1080p. I sit pretty far away from the TV and I can't really tell the difference playing games like Witcher 3 at 720p. It is impressive what AMD APUs can handle with fast RAM.

    New build for 1440p/144hz

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 10:13 AM PST

I am looking to build a completely new PC. Intended use for the PC is mostly gaming and general use.

Am hoping to get around 144fps in games like siege, mordhau etc. and then get 60fps on triple A games at 1440p.

    Budget is around £1000.

    Purchasing this in the UK.

I have made up a draft build but am not too sure on which 3rd party GPU to get. Just put the cheapest in for now.

    https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/nFTwgJ

Is it worth sticking with the 3600 or going for the 3600x and overclocking? The CPU comes with a wraith cooler but is it worth getting a separate cooler instead?

First Time PC Build Help $1000 Budget

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 07:27 AM PST

This is my first PC build and I'm looking to enter with a fairly nice set up. It will primarily be used for gaming and the random internet stuff. I'm posting here to basically make sure the individual parts so picked will all work well together and there won't be some unforeseen bottlenecks.

I'm looking to do minimum 1080 60fps on high and anything greater than that is just a bonus. I'm not looking to start overclocking initially so I want components able to do this right out of the box. As far as I know I should be able to easily do this, but I don't have any frame of reference otherwise.

My budget is around $1000 to $1050 pretax and I do live near a Microcenter. I get a potential error from part picker that the motherboard may need a BIOS update. Is there anyway to no when I purchase the motherboard what update it has?

If building a PC today would you use an HDD for files or just keep everything on SSDs?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 12:00 PM PST

Back when SSDs were newer technology they were more expensive than HDDs so people advised to keep a small SSD for Windows, programs, and some games and an HDD for the rest of their files such as documents, music, videos, and photos.

Today if you were to build a PC would you bother putting an HDD in it since SSD prices have dropped significantly? Is it still not a good idea to store infrequent documents such as music and videos on an SSD?

I'm not talking about using an SSD strictly for backup but just using an SSD for everything that's on your PC?

And it can take up to 16gb of ram so I'm curious should I go with 8gb of ram or 16gb when it comes to upgrading ram? Sorry I ask on this reddit but I figure this community can help me as I hardly know anything about laptops

    Choosing a graphics card

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 01:53 PM PST

I currently have a very low end build with a Radeon R7 360 gpu. I am about to build a new pc with almost all new parts but some old ones, including the gpu that I have yet to upgrade. What I am looking for in a graphics card is something that can run almost all triple A games at about 60fps at 1080p on ultra graphics setting, and that will not become obselete for at least a few years. I will be pairing it with a AMD Ryzen 5 2600 cpu. I had planned on purchasing the gtx 1660 super for a while, but then I realized that I could settle for a RX 590 for much less money. (260 vs 170) Then I realized that the RX 580 goes for about 160 including borderlands 3 and a Xbox games 3 month pass. Is it worth shelling out the extra cash for the 1660 super, or even for the 590 given what I'm looking for in a gpu?

    Upgrading an i5 6500 to i7 6700k

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 09:53 AM PST

So before I start here is my current system:

    CPU i5 6500 @ 4 x 3.20 GHz
GPU Gigabyte GTX 1070 Windforce OC
    PSU Cooler Master B400 ver 2 / 400W / 80 Plus White
    SSD Kingston 120GB V300
    HDD Seagate 1TB
    RAM 16GB HyperX Fury DDR3
    OS Windows 7 Pro 64bit
    MOBO Asus H170-Plus D3 (ATX, Intel H170)

My question is fairly simple: will the i7 work with my current system (chipset/cpu socket should be compatible from what I looked up, the i7 also released in the same quarter as the i5 as a sidenote. Also - I'm not sure if my psu will be enough so I just wanna make sure that it's fine

Thanks for ur help in advance!

Trying to buy new motherboard for my wife’s PC - HELP.

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 11:24 AM PST

    Hey all -

My wife is a PC gamer and we built her a pretty killer tower setup back in 2016. However, it's starting to get slow and creaky and I think it might need a new motherboard. (Takes forever to start up or shut down, real laggy to start up even a web browser, etc.) I know Cyber Monday is a great day to buy something like this so I'd love to surprise her and buy something... but I'm a clueless Mac user and could really use a hand.

    Here's what we've got:

ASUS Z1700A LGA, 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

What could I get to refresh this machine and make it snappy again?

    Thanks everyone!
