How to build your first PC

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 04:51 PM PST

    1. Do research, feel proud of yourself

    2. Create a compatible parts list

    3. Post to the sub and get shredded by the pros

    4. Revise parts, rinse repeat ad infinitum

    5. Post final list to sub, hear crickets, feel indignant

    6. Go nuts during cyber sales week, buy everything

    7. Before parts arrive, begin reading reviews that show you the errors of your ways

    8. Return those shoddy parts you never should have bought

    9. Buy better parts

    10. Admit you were wrong, hope it goes better this time, pray to gods you've never heard of before

    Ryzen 7 3800x bent pins :(

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 06:24 AM PST

So I made the noob mistake of bending a few pins. 3 to be exact, but got them back to line up and fit into the socket without breaking them. PC booted and everything seems to be working well. Question is: Am I in the clear now that it booted and everything seems fine?

Just updated my bios and had to restart, now doesn't boot

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 10:58 AM PST

The CPU debug light has just lit up and now my computer doesn't even boot, any ideas? I was just restarting after installing the new version of BIOs for my mobo Edit: The pc booted up first time before and I was downloading all my driver's including a update to the bios as it was out of date, version H20 instead of H50

Final Edit: I flashed my bios with a USB drive with the H20 bios version (Version before updating it) from the MSI website and my pc has properly booted now so I will never touch that again, I think it could have been a Ryzen 3000 only bios? Hence why it didn't detect my CPU. Thanks to all of you guys for helping me out, this is why I love this community :) Hopefully this can help other people who run into the same issue

Building my first PC with a $1500 budget, how does this look?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 11:24 AM PST

I've never been a PC gamer before, but I would like to get into it. I will probably mainly be playing Halo MCC and COD at first.

I am going for a white theme and want some RGB, and may add some RGB case fans in the future.

I also want to hook this up to a 34" 21:9 100hz 1440p monitor, would this suffice?

Thoughts on my current airflow and ways to improve it

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 11:39 AM PST

Recently built my first PC on my own. Overall pretty happy with how it all turned out. That said I've been thinking about my current airflow setup and whether or not it could be improved in any meaningful ways. My PC currently is in a Meshify C case and has two 140mm Noctua NF-A14 fans in the front, then an NH-D15 with both fans on the CPU, and then a 120mm Noctua NF-S12A in the rear. Here's a picture with airflow arrows.

    https://i.imgur.com/Kftqdxd.jpg

I had two possible thoughts on ways to improve it but wanted the opinions of those here with more experience than me. The first is that I believe I can bring down both front fans a touch to better align the top fan with the CPU fans.

The second thought is what if I put another exhaust fan on the top rear of the case like so

    https://i.imgur.com/7vVZQgW.jpg

Would that fan ruin the current air tunnel and actually raise temps? Maybe have an intake fan at the top instead of exhaust (though that seems like a poor idea)? There is room up top for 2 140mm fans I believe.

Also, I'm thinking about having the top front fan base its temps on the CPU temp instead of the system temp. Thoughts?

EDIT: Thank you all for your input on my current airflow. Based on most of your opinions, I will leave things as they are for now. I'm not having any thermal issues, just wanted to improve where I could. I'm still debating linking that top front fan to the CPU temp, but that's probably the most I might do in terms of changes. Thanks again everyone.

    Gigabyte 1080ti RMA

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 01:11 PM PST

Hey guys, so back at the end of 2017 I shelled out full price for a Gigabyte Aorus 1080ti Xtreme Edition. Fast forward to 2019, and I've been getting constant GPU crashing at stock clocks when gaming which really pisses me off.

As much as I hate to RMA, it got to the point where I was so sick of dealing with the crashing that I RMA'd it and now Gigabyte is telling me they no longer have stock for my card and my card is unrepairable. Other than the crashing, I loved the aesthetics and look of the card, which was very much picked for my pc build.

Gigabyte offered me the 2080 Gaming OC as a "sidegrade" replacement, but honestly I'm disappointed with the look and aesthetics of the replacement. How would you guys handle my situation? Do you think there's any way I could argue for the Aorus model of the 2080? Just looking for people that may have experience with this type of situation!

    Upgrading CPU

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 02:02 PM PST

Hey people, I just got the upgrade itch and I am looking to change my 7700k.

My main usage is normal and VR gaming.

I can go down two paths, the prices is the difference I have to cover after I sell my current cpu, mobo and ram kit:

    Path 1 :

    i9 9900kf + msi z390 tomahawk + 16gb ddr4 3200 (370 $)

    Path 2:

    Ryzen 3700x + Asus TUF Gaming x570-plus + 16gb ddr4 3600 cl 16 (290 $)

Thing is I am unsure what to pick, yeah the 9900k will be better at gaming than the 3700x, but with the x570 I could sell my cpu next year and get a Ryzen 4000 if they do manage to bring something that much better whilst with the 9900k I am stuck with the current chipset.

Please help me make my mind :D

Mainly will play Warcraft 3 Reforged, want max settings at 1080p, monitor is only ~60 Hz.

Is the 5700 over kill if i find it on sale? Is this one flashable to an XT?

Any places I should spend more or less?

Would like to stay around $700 so I will likely be waiting for items to go on sale.

I boot up the PC, enter BIOS to confirm the SSD is recognized in mobo properly. I have Windows 10 (1609) USB installation stick, but right after I started my set up I got error

A media driver your computer needs is missing. This could be a DVD, USB or Hard disk driver. If you have a CD, DVD, or USB flash driver with the driver on it, please insert it now.

Holes that are not standoffs on motherboard?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 01:19 PM PST

    Hey everyone,

Just picked up a motherboard and am planning on doing a mobo swap (got a good deal on a board that has two m.2 slots instead of the 1 - returning the other board).

Looking at the motherboard there appears to be hole that are not standoffs? Below is an image of the board, and if you look in the top right on the board, there are two holes: one that is shielded and one that isn't.

On the bottom right there is another hole that doesn't seem to have the same metal shielding as the other standoff holes.

    https://www.asrock.com/mb/photo/B450M%20Pro4(L2).png.png)

I plan on just using the shielded holes, and not using these other punch-outs. I am just curious as I've never seen those holes before.

    Thanks again!

Need help with PC build for work! 3960x TR build.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 10:54 AM PST

    Hey all!

I'm looking for some help with building a new PC for work/gaming. I'm investing a lot of money into it so I want to make sure everything has been thought of and planned out.

My budget is $5000 CAD without the graphics card (I currently have a 2080TI). Currently I'm looking at:

    Here's a PC part picker list - https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/kQBv3t

Here are the questions I have:

    • Is there a better mobo out there? I've heard good things about the xenith 2 extreme
    • When it comes to ram I'm kind of clueless on what to pick. I'm set on 128GB and I would like to overclock. I'm no expert when it comes to overclocking but it's something I'm comfortable doing with instructions as I've done with all my previous rigs.
    • My biggest thing about the case is something with solid airflow. During the summer my room temp gets pretty high so I'm looking for something that's going to survive. Large cases are not an issue for me.
    • I need to decide on an AIO cooler and i'm looking for the best you can get as overclocking my CPU is something I plan on doing
    • I'm also curious about liquid cooling my 2080ti ROG Strix as i'm not happy with the temps that it's reaching. This could have something to do with the current case that it's in but it's also something I want to keep in mind when picking my case as i would need to decide on another AIO as I plan on using a kraken g12 unless there are any better choices for easy GPU liquid cooling

Also something to note is I would prefer to purchase the CPU/Mobo/RAM from memory express so I can get their in store replacement.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I would appreciate any kind of help/advice!

Is J_USB the same as F_USB

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 10:42 AM PST

So I'm looking to put a wifi card into my pc but the manual I got on my gigabyte wifi card is in Chinese but it says "connect the other end of the USB Cabke to the F_USB connector on the motherboard" What is F_USB? I only have J_USB and regular USB. Do I just put the Cable on J_USB?

Rx 5700 XT or RTX 2060 Super (or RTX 2070 if it's a build under $1200 max)

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 12:51 PM PST

Hello, I'm looking to build my first gaming pc for Christmas and my budget is around $1000 or $1200 (if the $200 difference will have a big impact). I'd like a pc that would give me the most possible FPS and overall performance (I'm going to play in 1080p/1440p). And I'm hesitating between the RX 5700 XT, the RTX 2060 Super and the RTX 2070. I will be using a i5 9800k (unless you think AMD CPUs are better). I'd also like to record some clips (I mostly play Rainbow Six Siege). If you could guide me that would be awesome. Feel free to ask questions. Thanks

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

This build isn't for me so don't have the full details. I know the end user will be doing some gaming, though nothing too intense. Will be playing at 1080p.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I guess 1080p, 60 fps would be ideal, medium to high settings.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

I wasn't given a budget but dont want to go overboard. Tops $1500 after tax and delivery.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Canada.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    Can I run a 2070 + Ryzen 7 2700 on a 550W Bronze PSU?

I am thinking to upgrade my system and I have been using a Corsair CX550W psu with my 1050Ti. If I were to make a new pc can I use the same psu?

This will be the exact build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/t9wKXv

New WD Black (4 TB) HDD clicking every 5 seconds - is this normal?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 12:14 PM PST

I just got a new 4 TB WD Black & installed in it my PC. when I first turned on the PC i noticed that it was making a bit of noise while windows was starting, and since booting it's been making a small (very quiet, much quieter than my mechanical keyboard) "click" sound almost exactly every 5 seconds. My WD Green that I've had for years (and is still in the pc) never made these noises. Is this normal for WD Blacks? Or should I try to return it before it's too late? Btw it's been happening since before I even initialized the HDD.
Also, if there's any software I can use to test the HDD, please let me know about it. I have UserBenchmark but I'm sure there's probably something more suitable out there.
