This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

I need help building a pc for my son.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 12:34 PM PST

My 11 year old son, has asked me if we could buy him a computer. I told him we couldn't afford it, because we just recently bought our house, instead of renting the past few years. It broke my heart to see him so sad, so I thought about it, and over the next 6 months, I'll be able to save up $400 and buy him a computer, the thing is though, we both know nothing about computers. That's why I'm here, my son recommended I use reddit. I asked him what it is, and he showed me. Because I'm his dad, we are sharing an account, so I can make sure it's safe what he is viewing. I did a little research online, but I'm still clueless about computers. He said he wanted to play Fortnite and Minecraft on his computer. I was hoping, you guys could recommend me what parts I should get for him. He's really excited and I want him to be happy. Thanks in advance. -David

TIFU by running my new build at subpar settings for months

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 08:55 AM PST

I built my first PC a few months ago, didn't realize that I had to enable XMP profile for my ram to run at the level it says on the box. Been running at 2/3 speed for months. Is there anything else that needs to be done post-build to get the most out of your computer? I just installed the OS didn't really mess around with anything else. I've heard about fan curves but is the default fine?

Very Modest (Read: Extreme Budget) Gaming PC for Christmas Gift

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 07:37 AM PST

    Hello,

I am looking to build a super budget gaming PC with my 10-year-old son for his Christmas gift this year. He is looking mostly to play Fortnite, Minecraft, ROBLOX, and other indie games he sees Youtubers play (Bigfoot, etc). I have been lurking here and watching all the "2019 budget PC" videos on YouTube, however, I could really use some help.

My budget is somewhere around $350 and the goal is just to get him into the world of PC gaming. He is currently a console gamer but has shown interest in PC gaming for a while now. It seems like AMD chips are the way to go for budget builds. I am torn between going with an APU for now with a better CPU that opens the path for adding a GPU later, or getting a cheaper CPU and getting the GPU now. Here is what I have come up with so far for an integrated build:

    PCPartPicker Part List

    Type Item Price
    CPU AMD Ryzen 5 2400G 3.6 GHz Quad-Core Processor $119.00 @ Amazon
    Motherboard ASRock B450M PRO4 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard $69.99 @ Newegg
    Memory G.Skill Aegis 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory $49.99 @ Newegg
    Storage Kingston A400 240 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive $27.99 @ Amazon
Case Cooler Master MasterBox Q300L MicroATX Mini Tower Case $44.99 @ Amazon
Power Supply EVGA BR 450 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply $35.98 @ Newegg
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
    Total $347.94
    Generated by PCPartPicker 2019-11-30 10:34 EST-0500

Or I could go with a lesser CPU and get the GPU now with the plan to upgrade the CPU down the line? Here is the GPU build I have so far: You will notice that I had to lower the memory down to 8GB to get me closer to budget. This build is still over budget. I would probably also look for a used RX 570 on eBay to get the price down even more.

    PCPartPicker Part List

    Type Item Price
    CPU AMD Ryzen 3 1200 3.1 GHz Quad-Core Processor $59.00 @ Amazon
    Motherboard ASRock B450M PRO4 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard $69.99 @ Newegg
    Memory Patriot Viper 4 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory $39.99 @ Amazon
    Storage Kingston A400 240 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive $27.99 @ Amazon
Video Card XFX Radeon RX 570 4 GB RS XXX Video Card $119.99 @ Amazon
Case Cooler Master MasterBox Q300L MicroATX Mini Tower Case $44.99 @ Amazon
Power Supply EVGA 600 W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply $34.99 @ Best Buy
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
    Total $396.94
    Generated by PCPartPicker 2019-11-30 10:30 EST-0500

The other reason for the GPU build is that he really wants to play the game The Isle. He is really into dinosaurs and the game specs state that it won't run with integrated graphics.

    Thoughts? Help?

Thank you in advance for your time

Apparently one of the chips/transistors on the GPU caught fire when i booted the PC without plugging in its 6+8pin power connector. Don't know if it's toast, should i buy a new one.

GPU- Titan X Pascal PSU- Corsair 1000 Recently while playing Hitman the shut down unexpectedly, then would boot for a fraction then stop.

    GPU Advice - 1440p 144hz gaming

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 11:15 AM PST

So I've upgraded my monitor - bought the LG LG 34GK950F as an upgrade from generic 60hz Samsung monitor(s). Resolution of the new monitor 3440 x 1440

Trouble is, I will definitely struggle to get 144FPS average with my current GPU, GTX 980. Rest of system is Ryzen 7 2700x, 16GB Ram.

What are recommendations for the upgrade, mainly Games like Destiny 2, Apex Legends, Diablo. Some future proofing also be good. Have been thinking RTX 270 Super, as thats at the top end of budget. I'm in UK if recommending any shops!

First build, Ram and SSD questions

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 06:56 AM PST

Hey guys, i'm building my first PC (Ryzen 5 3600, RX 590, B450 Tomahawk) and i'm about to buy ram but I don't exactly know how big of a difference ram is from the next. Like, is the difference between 3200 and 3000 huge? is it something that an entry level guy like me would even really notice?

As for SSD, should I get a 2.5 inch SSD or an M.2? I don't fully know the pros and cons of either of them.

and if anyone knows of any specific ssd or ram that I should buy let me know please :) thank you

    Ram bad? memtest 3133mhz 27 errors 3h, 2h 2133mhz 0 errors

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 02:09 AM PST

Hello, I've been having trouble with my PC and I think the problem may be the ram. I'm able to boot at 3133mhz with my 3200mhz and it had been working for a while but the PC suddenly started to have trouble booting up. It breaks Windows and I have to repair it to use it every time. I ran memtest and got a 27 errors in 3h, also ran it at 2133mhz and got 0 errors in 2h. Does that mean the RAM is bad or is it normal? I'll try going down from 3133 and see what works. What is strange is that it worked for a couple weeks in 3133mhz but now it doesn't work.

    Proocessor Advice

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 02:10 PM PST

Hello, i am going to upgrade my rig from i5-2500,8gb ram to ryzen based one. I already orderes Gigabyte B450M S2H mobo and XPG 2x8 16gb ram. So here is the question. Please answer it as you know i am a college student. Should i go for a R5 1600 or R5 2600. I can buy 1600 one in following weeks but 2600 is a little throttling me so i will buy it next month if i decide on it. Is there a real difference? By far i can see 10% gaming experience, other casual stuff i will be doing wont bother me on both cpus.

What can be done with my POS?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 11:50 AM PST

    Hey all.
My PC isn't really preforming as desired anymore. World of Warcraft has become very laggy in battlegrounds etc and loading times are shit because i'm lacking an SSD. Only pulls like 15 fps when there's large amount of AOE spells on screen with a lot of people, this is on low settings as well. I'm afraid to even buy newer games because I think I won't be able to play them. I really want to play the new COD and other titles that i've been recommended in the last few years. Here's the benchmark.

    https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/22205917

So everything really checks out, the build is from around August 2013 so the RAM and HDD have really taken a toll I assume. Originally I had a GTX 780 SC, but that burnt out about 2 years ago and I found a 970 for 125 on craigslist to replace it. What can I do with this build? I can't really spend too much right now, maybe like $600 USD max. Should I just wait a few months and try to double the budget and build new? I see some deals around right now and I've been planning on holding out, but I've cut back a lot on gaming because of my pc's lackluster performance and i've just become quite bored.
    Any help much appreciated.

PC loses display but power remains on

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 01:53 PM PST

Randomly (sometimes when gaming, sometimes when doing nothing like just listening to spotify) having loss of display for my PC. When they cut out, all the lights and fans (cpu, gpu, ram) all stay on. However, if I hold down the power button, the PC won't turn off, so I don't feel like it can be the GPU...

Help would be much appreciated as I'm stuck.

How can I pursue my pc building interest?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 11:41 AM PST

About 3 years ago I got very interested in pc builds and I built my first one, which ended up being a terrible build that didn't work correctly. A year ago, a built a second one, with no help this time, and its a really good budget build that I'm very proud of. I love gaming but honestly the whole pc building experience is what has my attention right now. I would love to build tons of more pc's right now but I just don't have the money being a teenager. Does anybody have any tips on how I could still do activities with this newfound hobby? Also what kind of careers could I pursue out of high school to keep with PC building? Thanks for any responses!!

    SSD help

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 01:40 PM PST

Just bought a new ADATA SX8200 Pro 1TB on black friday. I have a 256gb nvme boot drive and 1TB HDD that came with my PC. I only have 1 m.2 slot on my mobo. Any reason to not just buy a pcie adapter and continue to use the smaller ssd as the boot drive and new larger drive for game storage? Computer is for casual use and playing video games. Could always just clone onto the larger drive but why not have more storage?

    Upgrade from a 970

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 01:31 PM PST

Looking to upgrade my GPU from a 970 to either a 1080 or 1080 ti. I was wondering if it'd be worth it at the moment, I could get a 1080 for about £300 and a 1080 ti for about £500, which of the two would be the better deal at that price, and is it even worth upgrading to one of them?

I've been able to use the 970 for quite a while as I only game in 1080p, but even at that resolution it's starting to struggle a bit now. Any advice is appreciated, thanks.
