    Simple Questions - November 28, 2019

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 04:08 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Built a PC last year based on a forum's recommendation and I'm not happy with the performance I'm getting. What parts should I upgrade?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 07:06 AM PST

First off, I really don't know anything about PCs. The one I have now is the first one that I built myself, so I hope you guys can help me out. This is what I have:

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1400

RAM: 24,0GB Dual-Channel Unknown @ 1064MHz (this is for music production)

Motherboard: ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. PRIME A320M-K (AM4)

Graphics card: 8192MB ATI Radeon RX 580 Series (MSI)

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

    Gaming.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Screen resolution is 1920x1080 and my goal is to play new releases on high at 60fps.

The most common problem that I have is that games seem to stutter randomly. I'll have 60fps in Sekiro for a bit, then I turn the camera and it dips to 40 for a second. In a later area where there's a lot of fire it becomes a constant 20-35 fps.

I recently got myself Fallen Order. Again, the performance seems pretty random. I'll have 60fps for a couple of seconds, then it starts stuttering like crazy when I look somewhere new. This happen every couple of seconds, so it's basically unplayable. Even if I limit it to 30fps and set everything to medium this particular problem doesn't get better at all.

Path of Exile basically runs like shit during the endgame when there's a lot of effects. I play the game on something ridiculous like 800x600, but even then I can't get a steady 60fps.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    500-600€

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Germany

    I'd really appreciate any help!

EDIT: What really annoys me is that this PC seems to barely even be any better than the one I had before. And that one I got for like 550 pre built in 2013 or something. Path of Exile in particular seems to perform pretty much the same

How do I upgrade a prebuilt for performance and coolness so I can gift it to a teenager?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 10:00 AM PST

I bought the HP Pavilion Power 580 023W Gaming Tower about February last year.

I want to add a cooler looking case and replace the power supply. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I've never built a PC from scratch before.

    Phanteks P400A RGB Case

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 06:41 AM PST

The p400a comes with 3 rgb fans that are connected to the digital controller in-built in the case. Question is... what header do they come in and how do i connect it to my b450 tomahawk max motherboard or psu? I heard that it requires 5v argb header which my motherboard does not have. Appreciate some help and if it is compatible with my mobo.

The solution to your computer either freezing when playing videogames/watching youtube randomly, or your screen going dark in the same exact scenario. [FINAL]

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 11:11 AM PST

So quite frankly, you know those threads where "My computer keeps on freezing I don't know what to do my motherboard is something along the likes of an ASROCK pro 4" and all that jazz? I was in the same situation for a long time. I checked this subreddit and I saw no solutions, so I was feeling quite hopeless, and I know a ton of people like me are in the same boat.

Well, I saw a comment on a very obscure reddit thread. This fucking genius says "well hurr durr I cleaned out the dust from my pc with compressed air and the problem was solved". So I go and try it out.

It's like a light switch. On and off. The instant that I cleaned out some dust out of my pc (and by the way, I didn't have much dust in my pc) all the freezing, all the screens going blank that could only be resolved by a hardreset were gone. Everything is working perfectly now.

So the solution to the problem is quite simple: clean the inside of your pc with compressed air.

    Hast la vista!

Is an I5 9600kf a good match with an Rx 580?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 07:39 AM PST

I just purchased a i5 9600kf that was on sale for really cheap, i'm planning on adding it to my system once it arrives as it's a lot better than my current cpu (i3 8100) but theirs very little info online as to how it would perform paired with an RX 580 or if there would be a major gpu bottleneck or not. As it stands my current cpu pairs quite well with the 580 however i'm running into lots of stuttering with certain games especially newer ones due to the cpu itself and am in need of an upgrade. I'm also curious what would my performance increase be like using the i5 9600kf instead of the i3 8100?

My current rig is: Gpu: Rx 580 sapphire nitro + Cpu: i3 8100 Ram: 16gb ddr4 2400 mhz Gskill Ripjaws V Mobo: ASrock B360M-HDV Kingston 240GB NVMe Seagate barracuda 1tb HDD Seagate Firecuda 2tb HDD

    Ram speeds

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 11:34 AM PST

    Hello,

I am trying to adjust the RAM speeds on a new build. If i go anything above 2133,my PC will crash. At 2933, everything will run until I start to play a game, then it will crash. Anything above 2933 will not boot.

When enabling D.O.C.P, it suggest I run at 3200, but PC won't even boot with D.O.C.P enabled.

    Current set up is:

    Ryzen 7 2700

    Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 32gb DDr4 3200

    ASUS ROG X470-F Gaming DDR4

(Win 10 boot from Samsung 860 EVO SSD)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated on how to get faster RAM speeds.

    I need help

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 02:08 PM PST

Firstly I like to play a few games mainly maybe project cars or fortnite, and I was thinking about buying a pc. I am awful with technology so building a pc is out of the books and I'm hoping for a pc that is under €1000 but can maybe give me 144fps on a 60hz monitor. I also have very limited space for this and my desk is hilariously small despite my monitor being propped up. Should I buy a pc?

Can I connect 3 fans to 1 CPU fan connecter?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 01:53 PM PST

So I have 3 Thermaltake pure 12 fans, the box is not clear on individual fan voltage.

    It says

    "Power Input: 12V: 3.6W ; 5V: 4.8W (Fan x 3)".

The CPU fan connecter on my motherboard (according) to manual supports up to 12V.

So is it okay if I use a PWM cable to connect all 3 fans to that 1 CPU fan connecter?

(I have 2 other fan connectors on my motherboard that support a max of 2A or 24W)

Please help me I've spent way too much time on something seemingly so simple lol

[Question] Any difference in quality between external and internal HDDs?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 11:34 AM PST

So I want to buy 8TB of hdd storage. I noticed external drives are slightly less expensive per GB than one intended for internal. I'm willing to rip the external out of it's enclosure to mount it internally, but i don't know if there's any catch to buying the cheaper external in terms of drive quality. Anything i should be made aware of about the quality of these drives?

    Comparison between :

    8TB Seagate Internal - $140

    8TB Seagate External - $120

However, the motherboard is simply the cheapest chosen from an i7-9700K build's parametric filter. Is there any reason for me to select a higher end (and pricier) board instead, and if so, which one would you chose to go with the above components?

Thanks in advance for any answers.

(Also, any critique on the rest of the build will be appreciated, please see my previous post for budget, use case, etc.)

    Graphics Card upgrade?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 12:57 PM PST

    Hello

    So I have a 1070ti with a ryzen 7 2700x 24gb 3200 ram

I'm looking at upgrading my monitor in the future already got that picked out so im good 1440p 144hz

So I have been looking at 2070 supers/ 2080/ 2080 super and 2080ti's and i know 2080ti is the best there is but is it necessary if i want to get the best out of 1440p 144hz or would a 2070 super do just fine?

my 1070ti runs battlefield 5 pretty much on ultra 1080p 45-60 fps while streaming.

Any thoughts are appreciated thank you

Upgrading from my 2013 1.3 GHz Dual-core MacBook Air (lol) - need your opinion on this new rig

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 12:57 PM PST

I'm trying to build a very budget streaming/video editing rig. It just needs to handle streaming for my PS4 Pro at 1080p60 and be powerful enough to run some basic video editing on Handbrake or Sony Vegas. Here's what I've had recommended when trying to stay around $300:

    CPU - Ryzen 2400G or 2600 + a cheap GPU

    Motherboard - B450M

    RAM - 2x8GB DDR4 - 3000

then whatever case with PSU I can get for $50-60 and 250GB SSD

    Questions:

    1. Can this handle streaming my PS4 Pro at 1080p60?
    2. Can this handle video editing on handbrake or Sony Vegas?
    3. Would I be able to play any low-end games on low settings?
    4. Are there any budget upgrades I could add that would make it worthwhile?

I have the Evolve X case and i'm really lost on where to put all these cables. My Asus thor PSU is kind of confusing because i have so many more cables then i'm suppose to use i think?

Are there any videos out there to help me or can anyone please help me? :(

    Ryzen 2700x or 3600?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 12:53 PM PST

This is my first build so I'm still trying to figure things out. I will be using the PC for about 70% gaming and 30% photo and video editing. I keep seeing people say definitely get the 3600 if you're only gaming but the 2700x is a lot better for editing so I'm not sure which to go with.

2700x is 159 USD, should i get it?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 07:07 AM PST

I'm getting a 1660 Super with it so idk if it's over kill but it's 40USD more than something like a 2600x or 2600 right now and it means i don't have to pay for a decent CPU cooler (which would probably cost around 40USD), should i get it?

what price is it normally? i've been warned not to trust sale prices that they say they've been discounted from because of them inflating them to make it seem like a better deal (although this is amazon i'm ordering from)

    any help appreciated :)

Should I upgrade my GTX 1060 6gb to RTX 2060 Super? Or something else? Or maybe nothing at all?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2019 08:28 PM PST

Strongly considering getting this card for black friday (unless someone would advise against that). Of course, I'm looking to make a worthwhile investment that will be a quality card several years from now. I've had my 1060 for about 3 years. And, although it has been great, I would like to see a little higher performance with new games. Should I consider upgrading to rtx 2060 super? My monitor is 1080p 144hz, although I would like to be able to play at a solid 60+fps at 1440p, in case I upgrade my monitor in the near future. If you feel the 1060 is still a worthy card and that I should wait maybe another year or so to upgrade, I'm all ears

    Current build: GTX 1060 6gb, i5-7600k, MSI Z270, 16gb DDR4
