    Simple Questions - November 18, 2019

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 04:15 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

    i7 3770k to Ryzen 7 3700X upgrade

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 04:21 AM PST

Feel it might be time to upgrade my 3770k, it's lasted me well for the last 7 years. I've been hearing good things about Ryzen 7 and that might provide a great performance bump at a good price.

I've drafted a build below but I'm fairly unsure on things like motherboard or RAM. I've heard that a x570 board is recommended for the 3700X but I don't really know much about this. I do plan to look into doing a little OC'ing - I ran my i3770k at 4.5ghz.

I'm wondering if this is a worthwhile upgrade, if I've missed anything out or that there are slight tweaks that I should make.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

45% gaming, 45% photo editing (photoshop and lightroom) and 10% video editing.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I'm not really looking into upgrading my gpu at the moment but I am wondering how much, if at all, my current hardware would be a bottleneck. For example, in Apex I usually run about 120+ fps but then dipping to 60 or below in busy areas or fights.

    My monitor runs at 2560x1440 @ 165Hz.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Flexable, obviously I would like to keep costs down but I usually only do a big upgrade on my PC/Laptop every 5 or so years (small ones like ram and storage as needed). So having good performance now that will hold up well over time (like my 3770k which I got in 2012 did) is what I look for, so I don't mind spending a fair bit upfront.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    UK

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Is 3200mhz ram worth $15 more than 3000mhz?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 08:45 AM PST

So I'm looking to buy some RGB ram and I found a 3000mhz pair that's about $15 cheaper than the 3200mhz version. Is the 3200mhz worth the extra $15? It will be paired with a Ryzen 5 3600 & GTX 1070, used mainly for 1080p gaming

Really wondering if this is gonna be an issue

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 11:10 AM PST

So I have all my parts to build a pc down and they are all in PC Part picker. The thing is is that this warning comes up and it's in red and I really don't want to be building my brand new pc and all of a sudden have a big issue. Can anyone help me with this

Some AMD B450 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Matisse CPUs. Upgrading the BIOS may require a different CPU that is supported by older BIOS revisions.

I know this is most likely not a physical issue but I don't know what it means. (I'm a noob)

    Explain driver issues with 5700xt...

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 10:50 AM PST

How bad are the driver problems on the 5700xt? I'm planning on getting the Power Color 5700xt but if the drivers are going to be very difficult to work with I'd rather just go tried and true and grab a RTX2060...

Anybody on here with experience with the card?

    Need advice upgrading from a pentium g4560 to i5-6500 or r5 1600

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 11:07 AM PST

My motherboard is asrock b150 fatality gaming k4. Should i go for the i5 or ryzen, i know most people would recommend the ryzen but i still need to get a new board if i go that route. So is it worth it to replace both my mobo+cpu and get ryzen or should i just go for an i5 for the easy upgrade. My grapgics card is a 1060 6gb if it matters.

Does using a 4-pin Y splitter slow down the case fan's RPM?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 07:19 AM PST

Hi! My MoBo has two fan ports but the other one is being used for my exhaust fan. I am planning to buy an input fan but I have one port left. I heard that using a splitter splits the voltage causing the fan's RPM to slow down. Is this true?

Planning to buy this fan: https://www.corsair.com/us/en/Categories/Products/Fans/Magnetic-Levitation-Fans/ml-config/p/CO-9050044-WW?desktop=yes

    Ryzen 3700X CPU temperature problems

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 12:35 PM PST

I recently purchased a Ryzen 3700X CPU and noticed it idles around 40c most of the time. Every 10-15 seconds it jumps up like 20c (to 60c+) for no reason and slowly goes back down to 40c over the next 10-15 seconds. Aside from the high idle temps (40-45c), it's frustrating to have my case fans keep ramping up and down because they are tied to my CPU temp. Not sure if I should be replacing the CPU, the motherboard, or the CPU cooler. Anyone else had this problem?

    Specs:

    Ryzen 3700X CPU

    Asus Prime x470 Motherboard

Corsair H100i v2 Liquid CPU Cooler

Does 1080p look worse on a 1440p panel?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 10:54 AM PST

So in short, planning on doing my first ever build very soon, ryzen 3600 with 5700 xt, but with black friday coming up, I'm hoping to buy a new monitor any time now, 27", 1440p, 144hz and freesync (and miss me with that TN panel). However I'm also planning to use this monitor to play my nintendo switch on, so naturally it's restricted to 1080p, which is fine... however I have a feeling and have heard a thing here and there that 1080p actually looks worse on a 1440p screen, maybe because of the pixel alignment of the screen or something? Anyway is my fear correct, or does it not affect how it looks at all?

B450 Pro4 having issues with dual channel memory. Hardware Reserved.

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 11:49 AM PST

So I'm getting the 'hardware reserved' issue with my memory when it is in dual channel. It reserves 8.1gb of 16gb

I tried everything I could find through google. msconfig regedit, other different things, and still not working.

    I have 2 8gb sticks, I've had them mostly in a2, b2, but I've tried a1 and b1.

I've tested the memory, it's all good.

Weird thing is that when I have them plugged for dual, bios says it is single channel, but cpu-z and everything else says it's dual.

I have everything in BIOS to default settings currently, and the memory has been set to the correct speed the whole time.

Currently I'm in single channel mode, and the system does not reserve hardly anything in single channel.

I've flashed all the newer BIOS' (from 3.20 up) and tested on each one. 3.40 has been the best.

I don't have anything overclocked, I'm not a pro, so I don't want to explode the computer on accident.

I reseated the CPU, took the damn thing apart and put back together, and still having the issue. This morning I reseated the CPU, and the BIOS showed dual channel, and task manager showed that a reasonable amount was reserved, not the 8.1gb. But after a couple of minutes, the PC froze, and when it restarted, the BIOS said single channel again, and the task manager said the 8.1gb was reserved.

I drove pretty far to microcenter to get this, I got in touch with them about maybe doing an exchange over mail (no luck). I contacted ASRock, havent heard back. But hopefully there is a fix, any help will be appreciated.

    Haven't built a PC for 10 years. Still running my on i7 920 C0

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 11:41 AM PST

Black Friday coming; time to upgrade. Ran on my old system for 11 years with continuous upgrades.

    Present build:

    R9 290 x Core i7 920 C0 w/ DDR 1600 12GB of RAM. 1TB SSD + 256GB SSD + 3TB HDD.

I have a 1000W Gold Modular Gold PSU that I'd happily transfer over to save some money and put an older cheaper PSU into my old build. I prefer a smaller form factor with a case that has some decent noise isolation (if at all possible). I want something quiet and solid for a case, budget about $200-250 USD for that.

Thank you all in advance for looking at this and helping me out! Really appreciate it!

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

2 x 4k monitor possibility in the future.

In the near term, 2 x 2560 supported is fine. I've never cared for amazing beautiful graphics, but I do care for frame rate.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

I'm willing to buy used parts and last-gen parts.

Not including monitors & peripherals, I'm looking to spend 1350$ USD before adding the case. Also looking to snipe black friday deals. Happy to go AMD if that works better. Happy to go full ATX if that brings the price down OR if the good quality cases are all ATX anyways.

Hoping for some cool Chinese liquid cooling in that budget, but totally unnecessary.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

How does this PSU Tier List make its rankings???

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 06:21 AM PST

This PSU Tier list at LTT

If someone can explain the logic behind the list to me, that would be great. I'm looking at Corsair PSUs and do not understand why the AX1000 is ranked below the HX1000 (platinum).

The Corsair AX1000 (2018 revision) is 80+titanium rated, more expensive than the AX1000, and has great reviews in the post's sources. Yet is ranked in the 'A' tier.

The HX1000 is 80+platinum, so less efficient, yet it is ranked higher in the 'A+' tier.

    What am I missing here?

Friend Selling Me His PC For $300, Worth It?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 01:46 PM PST

Friend is selling his PC for $300. I'm going to be replacing my PC with his. My current desktop will now Plex server, his would be my main PC, and my current Plex server would now be an extra PC in my bedroom.

Is it worth the $300 to upgrade from my PC to his PC parts?

So from a full circle it'll be:

    CPU: i7-4790K to i7-6700K

    Ram: 16GB (1600) to 16GB (2133)

    Graphics: 980 Ti to 1080

4K but can live with 1440P gaming.

    For the Plex server:

    CPU: 2400G to 4790K

    Ram 16GB to 16GB

    Graphics: Intergrated to 980 Ti.

4K but can live with 1440P gaming.
