    Why did everyone switch to nits from cd/m2?

    I know it's kind of a stupid question, but it's just a curiosity I had. As long as I've been interested in computer hardware screen brightness was always represented with cd/m2, but in the past half decade or so I started seeing it almost exclusively represented in nits. I know they can be used interchangeably, but why the change?
