This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

    Hardest part pre build:

Eventually abandoning my decision to go with the H510 from NZXT due to airflow concerns and settling on the Meshify C.

Deciding on if I can make 1.5 TB of combined storage work.

(Im a content creator and photographer files get large and wanted to just stuff a 6-10 TB HDD but couldn't wait no more)

Deciding if I was going to run a dual monitor setup or not and how I was going to source two like models during the shortage. (Thank you pcbuildsales Twitter account)

Settling on a CPU and GPU combo. It's enough to make you go nuts.

Creating a Windows bootable USB on a Mac laptop (not fun)

    Hardest part during build:

This isn't my build persay, I have built a computer before albeit 10 years ago. By far I completely underestimated the cable management process. Not so much on the visible end of the case but in the back. Even with a modular psu things became extremely tight when it came finding places to put things when it came time to seal her back up. From start to finish it took a lil under 4 hours.

    Goal of build:

Originally I needed a workstation to replace my 5 year old Mac Book Pro that's being on its last legs for the better part of the last year or two. I also wanted to get back into PC gaming. This turned into....well I did just sell my PSVR so maybe I might be looking into getting into VR on the PC. I also used to host, produce, etc a 2 hour live streamed podcast for two years and decided it might be time try out regular old streaming for a change.

    Would I do it again?

    Yes!

Do I think I would have to?

Maybe not. I originally was just going to get a prebuilt from NZXT, with their warranty and price list for parts being visible I had no problem stomaching the $99 (I think) build fee. I ultimately couldn't settle on a build layout so I went this route. I think places that make prebuilts are just going to continually improve so this might not be a problem in the future.

Word of advice for first time builders:

It all gets easier after you buy your first part.

    Why does this happen

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 11:03 AM PDT

I was searching to upgrade my prebuilt that I got off of Walmart, and I came across this offer on OfferUp, for a 1070 to, for 300 dollars. Immediately like the rest of you guys would be I was intrigued and decided to act on this offer, the seller confirmed the price and I was able to haggle it down to 275, and I took the money and went to the place we were meeting up. I gave him the money and he gave me a 1080ti box and inside was the apparent 1070ti, I plugged it into my rig, and no boot. I spent countless hours troubleshooting to what could be the problem, and in the end it came down to the GPU. I tried contacting the seller, but he wouldn't respond I knew I had messed up badly. I know this isn't a sub for son stories, but this just happened and I have no one I can tell this to without them making fun of me. Idk why I am posting this here, but honestly I just wanted to let it all out, thanks for listening and have a good day. Bye

    I touched USBs, GPU dies

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 06:57 AM PDT

Hello guys, I really... REALLY need help right now.

Last night, I wanted to remove a USB cable for my controller that was connected to my motherboard. As I was taking the USB out, the video on both of my monitors cuts out. I instantly turned my computer off and on again, and noticed that my GPU fans were not spinning at all. I went to my BIOS and found that my motherboard was acting like my GPU wasn't even in my PC. At the very least, I can see my computer screen with a cable plugged directly into my motherboard.

    I've tried:
    - reseating the GPU
    - unplugging and replugging the cable in the GPU
    - reseating my ram sticks (saw this helped someone before?)
    - updating my drivers
    - updating Windows 10

Something that might be notable is that when attempting to install/update my GPU drivers, the setup told me that the drivers were not compatible with my current version of Windows, both before and after I updated Windows 10.

TLDR: I touched USBs, GPU stops working.

First PC Build! (Mini ITX Gaming)

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 01:23 PM PDT

    Hey everyone!

I've finally built my first ever custom PC. It was more difficult than expected to build in this small case. The GPU barely fit - I had to remove the front IO and remove back plate screws and then reattach all of that once it was in. But it was very rewarding to finish and have this beautiful machine!

    Need help with 1st gaming build (1080p, 144hz - GTX1080, Ryzen 5 3600)

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 04:35 AM PDT

Hi guys, I've been reading and educating myself for the last few days and I somehow managed to put together this build:

    PCPartPicker Part List

    Type Item Price
    CPU AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor $174.89 @ Walmart
Motherboard Gigabyte B450 AORUS PRO WIFI (rev. 1.0) ATX AM4 Motherboard $126.99 @ Best Buy

Storage Seagate Barracuda Compute 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive $54.99 @ Newegg
Video Card PNY GeForce GTX 1080 8 GB Founders Edition Video Card $759.99 @ Amazon
Case be quiet! Pure Base 500 ATX Mid Tower Case $99.99 @ B&H
Power Supply *EVGA BR 700 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply $74.99 @ Best Buy
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
    Total $1484.82
*Lowest price parts chosen from parametric criteria
    Generated by PCPartPicker 2020-06-26 07:33 EDT-0400

To be fair I am not 100% sure about most parts I put in there, so feel free to point out any silly mistakes and things I should pay more attention to.

I am still on the fence about case and PSU, the ones I've been considering other than the ones in the build above:

    • Case - Phanteks Eclipse P400A Tempered Glass DRGB Digital

    • PSU - EVGA BQ 600 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply (If 600W would be enough I'd much rather get this one because it's semi-modular)

    Few concerns I have:

    • PCPartPicker pointed out that some AMD B450 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Matisse CPUs, is there anyway we could tell right now if that might be a problem in my case?

    • If I were to pick from the 2 cases that I mentioned should I invest into additional fans/change the fan placement to get positive pressure inside or is it not as important as I think?

If you have any suggestions on parts that would work better or be more cost efficient I'm all ears. Also, I already have the GPU and I'll be buying rest of the parts in Poland, if that helps with anything :D

    24 vs 27 inch 1080p monitor

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 05:24 AM PDT

I currently have a 22 inch monitor that I game on and will soon be upgrading. I have heard the sweet spot is 27 inch and a gaming center I know is clearing out inventory of the asus 24inch 144hz at $80 a piece. My concern is that my desk is fairly deep 31" and that if I mount the 24 it will feel too small? Anyone have a deep desk and can recommend?

Would I be better off with a performance SATA or a budget NVMe?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 11:22 AM PDT

Category Budget NVMe (660p, P1) Performance SATA (MX500)
    Configuration Dual-core, 4-ch, 4-CE/ch Single-core, 4-ch, 8-CE/ch
    DRAM Yes Yes
    NAND Type QLC TLC
    R / W (Up to, in MB/s) 660p: 1800/1800, P1: 2000/1700 550/510

    Source: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1B27_j9NDPU3cNlj2HKcrfpJKHkOf-Oi1DbuuQva2gT4/edit#gid=0

I actually have the MX500 (in the 2.5" form factor) next to me, but want a confirmation that I made a good choice. I will store everything on this drive (until I run out of space, then I'll buy an additional drive, probably HDD). That is, games and OS. I know that NVMe is only going to shorten loading times by a few seconds, but should I have bought the NVMe just to have an NVMe?

Edit: I know that I don't need NVMe, but, just because I want to know, is the budget NVMe better than the performance SATA?

Will it be beneficial to overclock my CPU?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 12:24 PM PDT

Hi, so I recently ordered some parts for a PC build, and I was wondering if anyone could help me with overclocking it. Firstly, I want to know if it'll be beneficial.

I live in a pretty hot country (Belize and it's 98F at 1pm for reference). I want to overclock my CPU after I get it, but I'm worried about temps.

Also, the motherboard I'm getting isn't the "best" in terms of VRMs and power delivery.

    Specs: Ryzen 5 3600, gskill 16GB ram 3600mhz CL 16, gigabyte b450m DS3H, hyper 212 RGB black edition.

My main concern is wondering if overclocking might damage the CPU or motherboard in the longer run because of thermals. I'd also like to increase single core performance mainly because I do audio engineering/ producing.

P.s. I don't have A.C. so ambient temp is usually 85-95 F during the day.

Build help - did I fry my motherboard?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 01:57 PM PDT

I've built a PC in the past with relatively few hiccups, but I'm afraid I might've screwed up big time in my current build.

I was trying to test the motherboard before installing everything into the case. I'm doing a SFF build. Here are my specs:

    • ASUS Mini ITX B450 motherboard
    • AMD Ryzen 5 3600 cpu
    • HDPlex 200 combo psu
    • Zotac GTX 1650
    • G skill trident z 16gb ram
    • Samsung 970 evo SSD

Here's where my idiocy comes in. I plugged the motherboard power into the PSU's GPU power slot. I booted it up, some smoke appeared coming from the PSU, and I quickly shut it off.

I corrected the power supply issue and it booted fine from what I can tell, but now the onboard graphics don't appear to work and one of the RAM sticks isn't lighting up.

How should I proceed? Should I try to troubleshoot the onboard graphics and RAM? Or should I assume that I fried them and possibly other parts and just replace everything?

advice on new gaming pc, EU

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 11:22 AM PDT

Hello, a little premise, I have a i5 4440 and a gtx 750 ti and I'm still mostly fine, I play fighting games and occasionally action games but mostly retro stuff, don't care about 4k and anything that isn't a stable 60 fps makes no sense to me. I don't mind even low settings but I'm at the point even that is becoming a bit too demanding for what I have, and most games are rather unoptimized, like SFV which runs worse and worse every update without looking anything better. Can't really run Tekken 7 well but I don't play it anyway.

I'm mostly having the need to put together a machine that will likely play the next gen of fighting games flawlessy(like say Guilty Gear Strive), maybe Monster Hunter, RE2/3 at max settings, occasionally some future big release at mid-ish details, and that will sit pretty for 5-6 years without any need to touch it. as an hobby/sidejob i do some drawing with a wacom tablet, and I started looking into blender 3d a little bit, i seem to be able to do anything I need so far with the machine I have right now, so I'm mentioning it just in case.

Budget is 650€ish, I put this together right now but I know very little of modern hardware so feel free to point out any issue or suggest alternatives.

From mid 2012 Macbook pro to 10700k 2080ti 64gb ram. Wow!

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 01:27 PM PDT

What a ride. Decided it was time to build a pc during quarantine. Lots of research, looking at pcpartspicker.com and eventually just knowing enough about computer parts in general that when it was finally time to order I didn't need to check compatibility issues I just knew. I didn't realize just how massive of an upgrade this build would be, my MBP was enough to get the job done for most of the photography work and when it was time to play I'd just play on xbox one x. Wanted a pc that could be the best of both and after looking long and hard at imacs and the new 16inch mbp, i just couldn't justify it. Money goes way farther. I went really big with this build and im stoked. Time to stream warzone and get some work done!

Often when closing a program or opening anything really from sound settings to chrome or firefox, i get the loading wheel and it stays on for at least 5 minutes. I'll try to restart it and with will take another 5 minutes to restart. After restart it will still be the same. If i hold the power button until it force shutdown it will boot fine for a while. I ran memtest last night for a couple hours and it shows no errors. I thinking it the motherboard which i recently replaced (fresh windows install). Any help will be appreciated TIA

This PC would be used for gaming (esports titles at 1080p 240hz and some AAA games) + video/photo editing on the side.

I've already managed to buy a case and power supply (I know that 850W is overkill, but this was the only one in stock).

The main question is motherboard: X570 Tomahawk WIFI (319 CA$) has good reviews, but it's not available in my town, and getting it next week would only be possible after a 2-hour bus trip.

There are 2 X570 motherboards available at nearby Canada Computers store:

    1. GIGABYTE X570 UD Motherboard @ 249 CA$
    2. Gigabyte X570 GAMING X @ 269 CA$

Is it worth going for tomahawk, or one of these boards would also be fine?

If you have any suggestions for more "bang for the buck" parts, it would help me a lot.
