This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

On 28 Feb I ordered and paid MSRP for a 3060 Ti from the only store in Australia that was taking pre-orders. It shipped yesterday!

    Posted: 10 Sep 2021 11:50 PM PDT

I kept watching retail prices climb and thinking the store would cancel my order and refund my money. About a month ago they contacted me and offered a more basic model 3060 Ti for 31% more money because they had it in stock, and I said "no thanks, I'll stay in queue".

I was legit surprised when I got the shipped notification yesterday. Getting a card that's currently selling for more than $1300 AUD for $799 AUD delivered ($580 USD).

1050ti GPU only lines up with pcie x4 slot - what will happen?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2021 11:08 AM PDT

I have an Optiplex 9020 small form factor pc that I wanted to beef up a bit and bought the the 1050ti to get some more graphical power out of it.

However, the card only lines up with the pcie x 4 slot, and not the 16. I've tested it out and while it DOES work, I wonder if I'm losing the full potential of the card, or if there will be any long-term issues with the card or motherboard.

    Thoughts?

    PC choosing wrong monitor?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2021 07:42 AM PDT

For whatever reason, my PC chooses to prioritize my secondary monitor instead of my primary, 144hz monitor.

So whenever I load into the bios it's on my second screen, and when I load into windows it takes a second for windows to force onto the other monitor.

So I was wondering, is there a way to change that?

My primary display is using DisplayPort on is on the 2nd slot, and the secondary is on the 4th displayport slot, using an adapter to DVI.

    Build Help/Ready:

    Hi everyone,

Building a new pc for the first time in almost 8 years. I was fortunate to win a Newegg scramble for a 3060ti and mobo. I've "built" the PC with pcpartpicker, but would love your much more knowledgable eyes to take a look. I'm wondering if there is a better choice for RAM to compliment the Ryzen 7 5800x. I'm also inbetween on the case being the Fractal Meshify or the Lian LI Lancool II Mesh if anyone has an opinion on that.

Overall, looking for any and all thoughts on this build. Using mainly 1440p gaming and streaming. Budget within reason (not looking to get crazy extravagant, but willing to pay for better parts). I am also forunate enough to have a Microcenter close by. THanks!

Edit: Prices are arbitrary as I just picked Amazon as the vendor for the post.

Is LG 32gn650b alright for programming? Or is a 4k 32 inch better?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2021 01:11 PM PDT

Hi guys. Is a 32 inch screen (QHD) good for programming? I will also use it for watching movies and playing games. The LG 32gn650b is 165hz and 1ms. I found a 4k LG monitor at the same price but with 60hz and 4ms. I don't know which one would be better.

Fresh Windows10 not booting anymore on freshly built PC

    Posted: 11 Sep 2021 02:07 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I've built a PC for my dad with the following parts :

    - PSU: Corsair RM650 80PLUS GOLD

    - Mobo: MSI B550-A Pro (AM4)

    - CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 (3.6Ghz/4.2GHz)

    - RAM : Corsair Vengeance LPX 64GB Black (2x32GB) DDR4 3200MHz C16 - Black

    - GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 1050 TI 4GT LP

    - SSD: CT2000P5SSD8 - 2To

I've installed Windows10 64 bits on it from an official USB key. The first time, the installation was okay, but when I rebooted, it was stuck on the MoBo logo, and I could not boot.

I checked on some forums who suggested that when Windows finished the installation and gives us 9 seconds to reboot, it was important to remove the USB key at that moment. So I re-installed Win10, and followed this advice. It worked okay for about a week.

I've installed some software, some drivers, made several reboots, everything was okay.

I then delivered the PC to my dad, and he could never boot on Windows. He has the same issue I had with the first installation: he is stuck on the black screen with the MoBo logo, and he never proceeds to Windows.

When I have him press F11 to enter the boot menu, then he selects Windows bootloader and press enter, the screen just goes black (no MoBo logo) and stays there forever....

What do you think could be the reason and what can I do to help? I included the parts below in case you guys can detect an incompatibility but I don't think so...

Is there something with the RAM or the SSD?

Note that I have also a 4TB hard drive on SATA in the PC, btu Windows is obviously installed on the SSD, the HDD is just for storage.

I hope you guys can help me on this, I feel pretty bad :/

    Thanks in advance!

Installing windows 10 issue on upgraded pc

    Posted: 11 Sep 2021 02:01 PM PDT

Right never built a pc before but my i7 6700k on a ROG Maximus viii hero board died. So I've bought and installed a i5 10400F and a Asus Aorus B560M elite motherboard and reused all my bits effectively making it the below build. Was a full send moment.

    https://nz.pcpartpicker.com/list/TqxKfP

So it boots up and goes into Bios and I can see my SSD but not my 1TB HDD though I'm sure windows was installed on my SSD.

I do have a windows 10 USB but it won't boot from it.

Anyone know how I can install windows 10?

    May have ruined my PC.

    Posted: 11 Sep 2021 02:00 PM PDT

Hello everyone, I'm an absolute noob when it comes to pc building. Today I tried replacing the thermal paste (didn't succeed as the screwdriver I had was too thick to unscrew the cooler, waiting on a new set.) After this mess I forgot to plug the cpu fan back in and watched youtube for like 30 minutes. After that I decided to play some games and it hit me after seeing 80 degrees on the cpu in the main menu. So I panicked, turned off the computer, opened the side panel and reached for fan cable, but like I said, I panicked and forgot to ground myself. While reaching my hand touched the cpu cooler and it felt like a static shock, but I can't tell if it was shock or the heat of it. Anyhow I put the fan plug in place and turned on my pc. It booted so that was good I guess. But the resolution was lowered like crazy although I was able to change it back to 1440p from Nvidia control panel. It all seems to be running normal right now but that shock and the resolution thing got me all stressed up. Might there be a problem in the system? And if so, how would I find it. Or rather test the system for problems so to say.

Building a new PC after about ~7 years. Rate my build!

    Posted: 11 Sep 2021 07:59 AM PDT

After building my current PC a long time ago and making some small upgrades along the way, I decided to take the plunge slowly obtain some new parts whenever I'm able, now I believe I have everything I need.

    Ram: Corsair Vengeance DDR4 32GB C16 RAM

    GPU: RTX 3080TI

    CPU: Ryzen 5 3600X

Case: be quiet pro 900 rev. 2

    Board: B450 Tomahawk Max

PSU: CX600 from my old build (600W)

I'm planning to use this for gaming at 1440p, and blender. My first major concern is that my processor might bottleneck me.

My second is that I'm not sure whether I'll be able to move my boot drive to the new system and be able to boot it up without issues (after setting it as my boot drive, of course). I found conflicting information over whether this would be a problem, some said I'd need to reinstall, others said that I would be fine as long as my Microsoft account is linked with my windows installation, which it is. Should I just bite the bullet and install windows on a newer NVME?

PCPartPicker didn't report any problems besides a nonfuctional USB Type C, which doesn't matter to me in the slightest.

Edit: Accidentally the said same thing twice the same thing twice

Edit 2: Thanks so much for all the helpful advice, what I'm getting so far is that I should upgrade my PSU for sure, I'll switch the mobo for a B550 Tomahawk instead for the sake of future proofing if nothing else. I'm stuck with my 3600x for now, but it's still a massive upgrade over my current computer's i5-4460.

    different keyboard types

    Cpu 5600x with stock cooler

    Mobo MSI B550 A-Pro

    GPU 3060 Ti

    RAM Ballistix 2x8GB 3600

SSD directly out of my old computer with windows already on it.

So I assembled everything, fans all spun up, everything seemed powered, and it went to BIOS. Checked that it detected the hardware, everything looked good. I set the XMP profile, and they both looked identical so I set it to profile 2 arbitrarily.

Saved and exited, and then it gave me a CPU overheating warning. It rebooted, went back to BIOS, and it was reading 85c, dropped to 75c when I just let it sit. I was very tired and decided to just shut down and worry in the morning. Turns out my CPU cooler wasn't locked down as I thought, and I fixed that with a little struggle.

Now it won't post. Nothing. I turn it on, monitor seems to register an input, and then it just shows black. Tried it several times and one time it showed a little horizontal white line in the top left, but never went beyond that. I tried resetting CMOS as I've seen suggested both through the pins and removing the battery. Nothing changed. I also reseated the RAM.

I don't k ow where to go from here, and I could really use some help please.

    Gaming Headset for an Father?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2021 11:26 AM PDT

So my brother's wife is looking for a PC gaming Headset and asked me for an Headset to buy (around 150 €). But even if i play a lot i dont know much about Headsets (i'm using an MMX 300 Gen 2). So he is going to be a Father (first child) so i assume a noicecanceling Headset would be a bad idea. Also he needs an Microphone which didn't pick up every noice. If anyone have an idea i would be very thankful.

Ps: Sorry for my bad english but my autocorrect didn't helped a lot.

Can my 550W PSU power a EVGA GTX 770?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2021 01:37 PM PDT

I have an EVGA B5 550W power supply and I was wondering if it would be enough for an EVGA GTX 770. On the website it says the minimum is a 600W psu but after a bit of research some people said a 550 W would do fine. so will it be sufficient?

Misadventures in overclocking my first time build - what can I do to successfully get a stable OC? Or in lieu of that, how can I just undo everything and go back to “stock” settings?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2021 11:14 AM PDT

I'll explain how I got into this mess. I'm far from computer illiterate but this is my first DIY build and I'm very much new to the more tweak-y/enthusiast aspects of PCs.

My CPU is a Ryzen 5950X, my MoBo is an Asus ROG Crosshair Formula VIII. PSU is a Seasonic Focus Gold 1000W. The CPU, as well as the MoBo's VRM block are watercooled via a custom loop. GPU (EVGA RTX 3080 XC3) is not in the loop. RAM is 4x8GB sticks of Trident Z Neo RGB, the one marketed as 3800mhz CL14

When I first set up the PC, I had no intention of OCing the CPU. I only manually OC'd the RAM since I found that the default 3800mhz DOCP profile actually was not stable, nor could I get it to run stable at any voltage level it would boot at. I found that after playing with the voltages I was able to get it stable at 3733mhz (confirmed via 24hour 0 error run of Karhu's RAM Test) and I was content with this. I was also able to complete a 24hour Prime95 run, so no problem, PC's good to go… Right?

Not so. After a little while of using the PC I found I was having issues with the USB-C ports. AMD urged me to update the BIOS and chipset again, which I did, and this does seem to have resolved the USB-C issue, however I found out the hard way that this actually wipes out all your BIOS settings. Time to start from scratch.

Now when going through all the BIOS config for the second time around (and manually OC'ing the RAM back to a stable voltage at 3733mhz again - fun!) I noticed the settings labeled PBO and TPU II. They seemed like good things to have enabled after realizing that these are modes that OC the CPU and I didn't have them on the last time around. So I turned them on.

Stress-testing the system in Prime95 seems to have exposed flaws in this configuration though. Everytime I tried to run the test, inevitably within some minutes the whole PC would crash and go completely unresponsive with a black screen - even holding the power button would not hard shut down the PC, I had to flip the switch on the PSU. Clearly not stable.

When the system would crash like this, the OLED display on the MoBo would show error code 9E - the error code reference table in the manual only states that 9E is reserved for future use. Very useful info. Digging online, this error code seems to be related to the TPM? I'm not sure what that would have to do with the pc crashing like this though.

I downloaded Ryzen Master to see if maybe that was a better approach to overclocking. Didn't seem to make any difference (at least with its automated mode) nor did I feel comfortable or knowledgable enough to take on manually OC'ing the CPU. so I undid these settings.

I then found out about CTR ClockTuner for Ryzen, and followed the author's video guide on how to use it. I figured this actually might be my best bet since the author is also using a 5950x and a similar Asus X570 board. I made sure PBO and TPU II were turned off again as instructed, and followed all steps shown in the video.

At least now with this OC I can get the Prime95 stress test to run without hard crashing the whole system, however every now and then some of the worker threads will encounter a "FATAL ERROR"and stop. This is really disappointing considering how I was able to stress test both the RAM and CPU previously for 24hr periods with no errors whatsoever.

Honestly I'm a bit tired of this and I don't even really need to OC the CPU, I would be happier with one that ran 100% stable and reliably rather than one that gives me cutting edge Cinebench scores or whatever. At this point I would probably just like to undo everything that's been done in CTR and just go back to stock settings. But I'm not even particularly sure how. I'd be willing to stay OC'd if I could get it stable that way too. But I'm not really sure what the path forward would be for either approach. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Upgrading from GTX 1050ti to GTX 1080

    Posted: 11 Sep 2021 01:17 AM PDT

I'm ready to buy a gtx 1080, but i have one potentially 'big' problem. I've been using a 550W psu for everything up to this point and i have no idea wheter or not it will be enough to support a 1080.

After discussing the matter with ppl outside of this subreddit, they have told me that they would not use a 550W for a 1080; and that a 1080ti requires a 650W. Videos on youtube are mostly focusing on the TI version so i have come before you with the grand question:

    Should i keep my 550W or should i just buy a 650W?
