How to explain to parents that building a computer is better than buying a dell prebuilt?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2021 07:33 PM PDT

They want me to buy one from Alienware because they have both owned dell computers that they use for work. Dell PCs were pretty good a few years back, but now they're some weird OEM motherboard that isn't compatible with half of the stuff on the computer. They think the parts in an Alienware "aren't the foreign ones you get when you build your own", but I'm pretty sure that Alienware PCs have terrible airflow and temps. I know the GPU shortage is still a thing, but I'm willing to wait on finding one at msrp than buying a low quality Alienware prebuilt. Gamers Nexus literally did a video roasting Alienware prebuilts! They say that that's just some Mexican guy who is getting paid by a computer company to roast a premium company. That the people who review the parts on pcpartpicker are just bots created by the companies who make the parts. Just to clarify, I think all people are equal. I don't stereotype or discriminate anyone no matter their skin color, occupation, religion, national origin, sex, or gender.

Making a Build for my Husband

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 08:41 AM PDT

My husband has been playing games on a laptop since he was a junior in high school. His friends all have high end computers and have moved on to more hard to run games, so he doesn't play as much as he used to. He seems bored and I feel bad seeing him not be able to enjoy time with his friends so I decided I'm going to a new desktop to surprise him. I don't know too much about this kind of stuff so please let me know if what I researched and picked out is decent enough. I have a friend that will be helping me put it together when I get all the parts.

    CPU AMD RYZEN 5 1600 6-Core 3.2 GHz (3.6 GHz Turbo) Socket AM4 65W YD1600BBAEBOX Desktop Processor

    Motherboard GIGABYTE B550M DS3H AM4 AMD B550 Micro-ATX Motherboard with Dual M.2, SATA 6Gb/s, USB 3.2 Gen 1, PCIe 4.0

    Memory Team T-FORCE VULCAN Z 16GB (2 x 8GB)

    Storage Intel 660p Series M.2 2280 512GB PCIe 3.0 x4, NVMe 3D2 QLC Internal Solid State Drive

Video Card MAXSUN GeForce GTX 1660 Ti iCraft 6GB 192-Bit GDDR6 Gaming Video Graphics Card GPU with 3 Fans

Case EVESKY ATX Mid-Range Gaming PC Computer Case With 6 RGB LED Fan Positons

Power Supply Corsair - CX (2017) 450 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply

So far I have the case, power supply, SSD, and motherboard. Eventually I will get a 2TB hard drive for him too. What are your thoughts?

Please help! My PC is shutting off randomly, sometimes getting stuck in a boot loop, and doing a bunch of other weird stuff.

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 11:57 AM PDT

This is a long post, so bear with me.

So I built this PC a few days ago. The specs are as follows:

    • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 3.7 GHz 12-Core Processor
    • MOTHERBOARD: Asus ROG STRIX B550-I GAMING Mini ITX AM4 Motherboard
    • RAM: Crucial Ballistix 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory
    • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 10 GB Founders Edition Video Card
    • PSU: Cooler Master V SFX Gold 850 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular SFX Power Supply
    • SSD: Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive
    • CPU COOLER: Corsair H60 54 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
    • CASE FAN: Noctua F12 PWM chromax.black.swap 54.97 CFM 120 mm Fan
    • FAN FOR AIO CPU COOLER: Noctua A12x15 PWM chromax.black.swap 55.44 CFM 120 mm Fan

Below this, I'll list some possible outcomes/glitches I run into and describe what happens.

(Outcome no. 1) When powered on, the motherboard's error indicator lights will cycle through yellow (ram), red (CPU), and then white (VGA) where it ultimately gets stuck.

(Outcome no. 2) Occasionally, after 5-10 restarts, it'll get past the white LED to a green LED (post). At which time the monitor will flick on, display the BIOS screen, then move on to the windows 10 logo. But then, the PC appears to go into a brief boot loop lasting just one restart. During this restart, my mouse and keyboard's LEDs turn off and then back on. More importantly, however, the motherboard indicator LEDs start their cycle again before it gets stuck on white or the VGA error light.

(Outcome no. 3) Even more rarer than outcome no. 2, the PC is unexplainably able to load fully into windows 10. When this happens, the computer operates as normal for about 0-3 minutes, at which point it the monitor will lose signal and the PC restarts the LED cycle again before displaying the same white vga error LED. In the brief amount of time I have within this state, there are a few things to note:

3a) Windows has an update it needs. If I try to download it, my computer shuts off randomly sometime during the installation.

3b) If I go into device manager, my Ethernet manager and my GPU display driver both have errors.

(Outcome no. 4) I am sometimes able to boot into safe mode. In safe mode, I've tried/noticed a few things:

4a) If I disable the 3080 graphics driver, then boot into windows again, it will work for slightly longer than normal but ultimately it will shut back off again.

4b) I've ran DDU uninstalled to remove any remnants of GeForce Experience and GPU drivers. This works successfully, but doesn't accomplish much, as I need to restart after it's finished running. And even with windows' default GPU driver, I will nonetheless be booted out from windows once my PC randomly restarts.

4c) I've tried disabling "automatic restart for windows after unexpected shutdown" and "fast boot up" (both in the BIOS and in windows' safe mode). Neither seem to have any affect.

(Outcome no. 5) I've tried reinstalling windows maybe 4 times now. Sometimes, the PC will shut off halfway through the installation process. I've tried just leaving the PC alone to see if it comes back on, but no luck. Upon rebooting, I'm usually greeted with "We couldn't install windows" or the installation just canceled and I have to restart it. In the advent of a successful installation of windows, I'm able to use the computer normally for 30ish minutes. In that time, I've tried installing GeForce drivers. Right at the end of the installation process, however my PC ALWAYS restarts again and it will not post. Because of the failed installation, I've always had to spend 40 minutes trying to get into safe mode again and use DDU to remove it.

Here's a list of hardware changes I've made in attempts to narrow the cause down:

    • Different RAM makes no difference
    • The newest version of my BIOS does nothing.
    • Different PSUs change nothing.
    • Different monitor display cables change nothing.
    • Unplugging peripherals does nothing.
    • Using a different GPU (my 1080 ti) DOES make the PC work when I'm able to get into windows (it still takes multiple tries for it to boot). But seeing as I can't install drivers for the 3080 which isn't plugged in, it doesn't solve a whole lot.
    • Using a different motherboard changed nothing.
    • Using superstitions and various rain dances in an attempt to make the PC work out of frustration, did not work.
    • Using a different case fan changed nothing.
    • Using a different SSD changed nothing.
    • A different surge protector did nothing.
    • A different monitor did nothing.
    • Redownloading windows 10 on a different USB drive and installing that did nothing.
    • Using different PSU cables did nothing.
    • I've put my RAM in an old PC and it worked fine.
    • The 3080, when placed in an old PC, also worked fine.

I've spent around 35 hours (not exaggerating) now trying countless tutorials on YouTube and swapping parts all in an attempt to fix this cursed PC. But nothing has worked. If you have ANY advice on how to fix this, please let me know. I can of course, provide any more info necessary.

EDIT1: Here is a video of Outcome no. 2 for further context. Hopefully this helps:

Is it typical for an HDD to stop showing up in BIOS when the drive dies?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 01:35 PM PDT

I would just like to confirm what I suspect, that this generally happens when an HDD dies. I've been building computers for a long time but I was hoping to get some stories from other people about this. I've got several TBs of dead hard drives lying around my house- none of them will show up in my bios. These are all drives that I had written "dead" on because they stopped functioning properly at some point. But I was going through trying to see if some of them could be revived, and I thought it was a bit strange that all of them just won't appear in bios at all. Some of them seem to spin up and make noise, some of them don't. But none register. So it got me wondering if that's how its supposed to work. If BIOS thinks the drive can't read/write/function properly, it simply won't register the drive is even connected? That's normal?

Help deciding monitor for my new PC build!

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 01:10 PM PDT

I built my first PC 15 days ago and I'm not sure what monitor to buy for it. I was using my old monitor I bought when I got my Xbox, until now.

I use the PC for 3D modelling (in Maya. I'm still yet to start learning Houdini), and gaming equally and I can't decide if I should go for 32-inch 4K 60Hz monitor or a 27-inch 2K 144Hz or 165Hz monitor.

If it were for gaming alone, I would have taken 27-inch 1440p 144Hz monitor.

My current monitor is 1080p, 24-inch and it's too small for 3D modelling. It's manageable, but it got damaged when I put it in my car and drove 450kms, 😅, without any packing. It's an old monitor too, so I wanna upgrade. And, 1080p is too inconvenient for 3D modelling.

I've never really used a 4K or 2K monitor. My concern is about 3D modelling. 🤔

Any ideas to improve this build?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 12:55 PM PDT

I'm planning on building a pc soon and this is what my plan for the build is.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600x GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Motherboard: MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus RAM: Corsair vengeance RGB PRO 8gb(x2) Case: NZXT H510 atx compact mid tower case(matte black) Storage: Seagate BarraCuda 4TB
Power supply: EVGA 750GT (750w gold compact 150mm)

I don't have a lot of money so I can't go much higher price wise. So I'm mainly asking if their is better parts for a similar price point.

Looking for an CPU upgrade for the first time in 4 years, need advice on what to buy

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 01:58 PM PDT

My GPU is at the end of it's life and I need to pick a new one, Help?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 11:21 AM PDT

Back in 2016, I built myself a PC. In this PC was a Geforce GTX 970 from NVIDIA. But now, over the course of the last 2-3 months, fans have started making lawn mower noises. (Yes I did try dusting it, no it did not work)

Now that a second fan has joined the cacophony group, I figured it was about time to get myself a Graphics card upgrade. Problem is, I don't know shit. I looked at things like the 3060 TI but it's either sold out on BestBuy or a grand on Amazon.

So that's where I need help. I don't know shit about how most of these parts work, and so I'm not really good at comparing them. Now, I am a college student, so my capital ain't exactly prolific.

I was thinking about maybe getting This one or maybe That one, but it's way more expensive. I'd like to change pretty soon because it's kind of hard to enjoy games or videos while hearing "EEEEEEEUURURURRRRRRRR" non stop. So, if somebody has recommendations, I would be most grateful to hear the wisdom of those who know about this kind of stuff.

PS: Also, the only time i put in a graphics card in my life was... Well, 5 years ago. So if anyone knows a good tutorial to changing it, I'd appreciate a link.

Thanks in advance to any who offer advice.

What would be the best way to upgrade this PC?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 01:17 PM PDT

Currently working with a Vega64, Ryzen 5 2600 (with b450 tomahawk) and 16gb of 3200Mhz RAM. I'm only playing at 1080p so maybe an upgrade would be worthless, but I was thinking about upgrading CPU to a newer gen ryzen because I'm having some performance issues over some games. Would it be a good idea or would a GPU upgrade be better? Thanks!

I have no idea if I got the right motherboard for my GPU!

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 01:13 PM PDT

Hi. I recently managed to get these parts for building my own pc (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/jgyTQD) and I've been using my pc for like a week and everything was perfect until today when I was looking in the specification part of my motherboard website (B560M AORUS ELITE (rev. 1.0) Gallery | Motherboard - GIGABYTE Global ) and noticed something on the expansion slots section, where it basically says that PCI Express x16 slot is only Supported by 11th Generation processors. I'm new to pc building and have no idea if that's gonna affect my GPU performance since I have a 10700k.

    I'd appreciate any comments. Thanks.

Trying to decide between an AMD 6000 series GPU or an Nvidia 30 series GPU for gaming and content creation. Which GPU do you think is better and why?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 12:56 PM PDT

    Context

So I have about $800 that I can spend on a GPU. I kind of need to get one now because my GPU (1070) is on its last legs at this point. I've started streaming my games, editing down the VODs, and uploading these to YouTube. Now with my 1070, which is already not doing well, this takes quite a toll on my computer's performance. Now I've heard good things about the new Nvidia GPUs and how they perform better while streaming, recording, and editing. I don't know how true these claims are because I haven't done much research on it, but hearing this kinda makes me wanna get an Nvidia GPU over an AMD GPU. However, I've seen quite a few AMD GPUs in stock recently and I just haven't gotten them because I heard DLSS and Ray Tracing isn't as good on them as it is on Nvidia's GPUs. Now I'm probably not going to be using ray tracing that much, so I don't really care about it, but I do care about how the GPU performs in games and how good it will be for content creation as well (like streaming, recording, editing, and so on).

    Questions:

    1. Is Nvidia better for content creation or is AMD better?
    2. Also which GPU would you recommend?
    3. Finally, if you have an Nvidia or an AMD GPU do you like it, and does it perform well?

    Stripped screw on M.2 cover

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 12:54 PM PDT

    Pics: https://imgur.com/gallery/OM0kfhi

I've had this build for around 8 months now and this screw has been the demise of me. I originally circumvented this my installing my main M.2 in the slot on the back of the board, but now that I'm in the need of more space, it comes to haunt me again. I had this motherboard rma'd when I first got it, and when they sent it back, this screw was tightened with the strength of all the Greek gods combined and I can not get it out for the life of me. I've tried the rubber and trick, all different types of bits to unscrew it, as well as duct tape. Are there any other methods I can use to get it out? I really done care about the reusability of it because once the M.2 is in, I'll forget about this Bain of my existence. If it comes to completely annihilating the screw, does anyone know where I could possibly get a replacement? Any advice is welcome!

Looking for a decent standalone microphone

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 10:42 AM PDT

Looking to get a decent microphone, wireless would be a plus but not required. I dont know how much noise cancelling is needed but I do have a mechanical keyboard I would want to avoid the listener hearing.

Any good alternatives for 20-60 usd? Usage is only going to be discord and game communication, so no need for streamer quality audio.

I am able to stretch the budget a little.

    Thanks in advance!

Edit: Also, I want to avoid one of those desk mounted bulky microphones.
