    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 05:00 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Don't be me. Read the manual.

    So I've just put together a gaming rig. Ryzen 5 3600 with a 2070 Super 8GB.

Booted up Jurassic World Evolution and was getting 13fps. Surely that's wrong. Nothing would solve it. After 2 days of reinstalling drivers and checking forums I was pretty dissapointed. Then I loaded up GPU-Z to check the stats.

    GPU Bus - PCI x16 2.0 @ 1.1

I had the GPU in the wrong slot...

160fps now. So yeah. Super smart builder right here.

Edit - Thanks for the awards! I expected to be told I'm an idiot (which wouldn't be wrong haha) but it's cool to see some decent discussion about it.

    I bought a pre-built for spare parts.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 10:38 PM PDT

So I built a PC. The year was 2011. A sweet i5 2500k oc'd to 4.5ghz, 8 gb of ddr3 ram, a 125 gb SSD and an HD5950. It was the best bang for the buck going and played all the games no problemo. The years passed, the Radeon got replaced with a R380 (then another). Over time, frame rates dropped, but it was still playable, yeah? Until it wasn't. I couldn't play Fallen Order. Doom Eternal said no more than medium setting. Valheim dropped to single frames in the massive compound I'd made so I couldn't even enjoy it. Hey, the government is asking me to stimulate the economy? I think I have an idea of what to do with that.

Then I started looking at where the tech had gone and what the components market looked like. Ugh. So I can't even buy a graphics card?! I might be able to get a hold of a processor maybe?! Look for solutions, it sounds like SI's are able to get a hold of parts, maybe it's time to pay someone do the dirty work. I like the look of iBuypower systems, and the configurator on their website was pretty cool and let me pick the parts I actually wanted. So I made the last changes on a system and paid for the damn thing.

6 weeks later and the damn thing was still in the same spot it was when I'd originally placed the order. After numerous calls and interactions with customer service on Reddit, I was able to determine they had no idea when they were even going to get to picking the parts for the thing, so I canceled my order. I took that money to Amazon and bought the cheapest system I could find with a Ryzen 5600x, 16gb RAM and a rtx 3070. I bought the case I actually wanted and the motherboard I had my eye on, crossed my fingers hoping I'd get a decent return on the unlisted parts in the box of parts I bought.

The Skytech system I got was actually pretty nice, all in all. They did an excellent job on cable management, most of the parts were good quality. The ram was 3600mhz, it had an m.2 Gen 3 WD Blue drive, and the 3070 was a Gigabyte Vision card. The fans were fairly high quality InWin Jupiter's and had a controller. The software was burnt in nicely and had very little bloatware. Honestly, if the case was my style, the power supply wasn't cheap garbo and it had included an AIO, I might have kept it. I almost felt bad about tearing the guts out of it. Almost.

Long story short (ha), I now almost have the system I really want. I'm still waiting for my case fans and ram upgrades to show up to really bling it out, but its up and running and dunking on every game I throw at it in 1440 144. The SSD is blazing fast. I'm very happy with where its at. Components list now!

Case: corsair 4000D CPU: AMD Ryzen 5600x Mobo: Asus b550-F Gaming (no wifi) GPU: Gigabyte rtx 3070 Vision RAM 16 gb xfx 3600mhz HDD: WD Black Gen 4 m.2 1TB WD Blue Gen 3 m.2 1 TB 2x WD Black 7200rpm 3.5 in 1 TB PSU: EVGA Supernova G2 750 watt AIO: Corsair 240mm

And some pics for your edification

    http://imgur.com/gallery/cyFEkmX

Its been a journey, and I needed to get it out there, even if it's just for me. If you've read this far, thank you. A d if you're in the market for ASRock ITX mobo (w/ wifi!) or a Skytech branded InWin case, let me know! I won't subject anyone to the power supply, lol.

Paid off student loans so splurged with my first Hardline Custom Loop

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 07:11 AM PDT

My student loans paid off, debt free celebratory build! Dubbed – Blue Eyes White Dragon

Finally getting around to doing a build complete post. Man was this a long road, started gathering parts in Nov2020 with Ryzen 5000 launch… Was able to put together base components on air about 1.5 months later but then spent the next 4 months gathering and waiting on water cooling components. I severely underestimated the increased complexity a custom water-cooling loop entails as well as all of the added costs that sneak in so wanted to make a very detailed post to hopefully help others considering their first loop be better able to budget appropriately. My initial target budget was $3,000 for base components and $1,000 for water cooling but almost every part ended up getting slightly better part until was about $1,500 over initial budget. I'm sure could easily have gotten close to budget if was patient for a 5600X/ 3080/ cheaper mobo/ and not going all EKWB on the water cooling components but oh well lol. The only reason I got a 3090 was a I got tired of battling for every 3080 inventory drop and on a whim decided to try a 3090 and got one on the first try… With closed pickup location being 8 hrs away soooo road trip!

    Random Stats:

    • GPU Boost Clock – 1995 MHz just via running cooler without tweaking manually (Base 1695 MHz)
    • CPU Boost Clock – 4950 MHz using RyzenMaster (Boosted to 4854 MHz without tweaking with monoblock)
    • Timespy – 18,077
    • Timespy 4k – 9,100
    • FPS, Assassin's Creed Valhalla (4K) – 63 via benchmark (Odyssey at 62)
    • FPS, Cyberpunk 2077 (4K, DLSS Quality w/RT) – 66 in city (47 without DLSS)
    • FPS, Jedi: Fallen Order (4K) ~90-100 during gameplay
    • FPS, Shadow of War (4K) – 101 via benchmark

    Temperatures:

    • CPU ~65 C after 1 hr gameplay (vs ~75 C air cooled)
    • GPU ~52 C after 1 hr gameplay though gets up to 60 after 2+ hrs (vs 63 C stock cooler)
    • Ambient – 23 C
    • Coolant (measured via sensor taped to outside of tube) ~mid 40s, can get up to 50 C after extended gameplay sessions

    Lessons learned/regrets:

Not sure I will ever do a white themed build again lol. I knew concessions would have to be made but man does it make it harder to find parts. If I did I would not use EK and prob go with Corsair since they have so many more white parts such as rads and fittings.

Still unsure if I would ever do a hardline custom loop again… Love how it looks and performs but main was it a hassle and so much extra stuff to worry about. Maybe if I live closer to a Microcenter in the future but man was it a hassle getting all the parts and then waiting every time realized needed 1 more thing. I suspect in 3-4 years I will have forgotten the frustration so who knows lol.

One thing I noticed is that a lot of EKWB's documentation is missing little things a first timer would not know to look for. Customer Support (shoutout to Marian and EKJake on reddit) were extremely helpful but a lot of stuff felt like I shouldn't have had to ask or google solutions to if the pdfs were better.

Currently really regret the ultrawide monitor. I got it mainly for my strategy games (paradox titles, Civ, Total War) and aRPGs/FPS games but any games with good HDR I'd rather play in 4K on my OLED and the only strat game that actually felt good ultrawide was Total War since most of the build menus are center aligned and seeing more of the battle map is nice. Any other game with corner minimaps or left/right aligned menus just got annoying constantly turning my head to see so I leave it in 16:9 mode with black bars most of the time. It is nice for productively having 2 things open side by side almost full size but that could easily have been accomplished with 2 16:9 monitors.

    Future Plans:

Going to try overclocking to see how much higher can push but since everything hitting >60 fps @ 4K didn't feel the need currently.

During my first maintenance will get some extenders and fittings to fix the bottom 2 tubes to be straight on as well as add in an actual temp/flow meter to one of the tubes.

Doubt will do a monoblock again. Love how it looks but was a pain in the ass to install and would have to disassemble the entire build to check if something wasn't working.

Also I feel like my temps could/should be a little better. Hard to say until get actual temp sensor for the coolant and apparently monoblocks allow higher temps in general so will try reseating everything during first maintenance and see if improves. Also maybe clean out the rads, I didn't do any of the rinses I had seen suggested, just used as delivered.

Would like to redo the spray paint job on the rads as well as try to find some dragon decals I can fit on the side spray painted in a different color. I would also like to find some sort of sheet with cut out dragon to squeeze in between the front panel and the distro plate so the light/fluid only illuminates the icon but that's a small space so not sure what material would work.

All in all just glad to finally be done with this and not have to worry about the absurd stock issues with everything anymore. Good luck to everyone else out there still trying to get their parts!

How much experience do you need to build a pc?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 08:28 AM PDT

My dad is skeptical about me building my first computer and he keeps saying that I need to completely dismantle our old computer and then show him the parts (which I already did while taking out the hard drive to get all the data back). Now he's saying that he needs to see all the parts (he was not there at the time of taking it apart) and with his nature, im sure he's gonna make me take a computer engineering course until im certified to build computers and I know he's gonna go overboard. Does anybody know how much experience you actually need to build a computer (keep in mind that im under 16)? I memorized every single step before and I dismantled our old computer then put it back together. I also played with lego's alot -_-...

Help needed: Issue installing a WiFi PCIe Card.

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 10:27 AM PDT

    Hi guys!

Not long ago I got a AX router (asus something) for cheap, and I decided to get an upgrade for my WiFi card (I know cable is better, but it's not possible in my situation).

I got a Fenvi Wifi6+ card. I installed it (on each and every of my empty slots and I couldn't get it to work; Card lits on, I can use the Bluetooth of the card (uses an usb cable) but *my PC * doesn't detect it further.

I've tried deleting and updating drivers, downloading the manufacturer drivers and finally a manual install of said drivers to no avail.

I asked everyone brand involved in this (MOBO, chip, card manufacturer; Seller and a guy from my city) and I couldn't get it to work. The guy of my city installed it in his test computer and it worked fine; The card works fine.

I believe that it may not be compatible with my Mobo or CPU. I've been using it as an expensive Bluetooth card.

I should notice that I found a similar post on other webpage that had my same CPU and same card, with the same problem.

And lastly, all of this happened in February and I haven't looked much since.

I will now post the components of my PC, if anyone knows anything, please don't be afraid of telling me, even your most creative methods.

    CPU: Ryzen 5 3600

    GPU: AMD 590 Fat Boy

1 HDD and one SSD, Samsung

    MOBO: Gigabyte AORUS PRO.

    RAM: 2x8GB 3200

OS: Windows Pro 64 bit (Bought from Microsoft)

THE CARD IN QUESTION: FENVI WIFI6 e (Just in case, ebay link) https://www.ebay.com/itm/393029681320

    Thanks.

~~Edit: Looks lile this card will NOT work with AMD. ~~

    :(

    Edit 2: Looks l8le I may be wrong https://www.reddit.com/r/XMG_gg/comments/js4axj/intel_ax210_wifi_6e_wireless_card/

ax210 is a full cnvi+crf solution so it will work in any laptop. ax211 is crf only solution, but should work with cnvio solutions integrated in ice lake/tigerlake.

    Edit 3:

Looks like this happened too with the AX200 and it was fixed by a windows update

    https://www.reddit.com/r/ryzen/comments/f3quea/wifi_6_network_module_for_ryzen_build/

Edit 4: It certainly doesn't look good, tomorrow I'll keep checking.

Maybe disassembling the card and installing the chip directly helps? I bet it won't but who knows. Like seriously, does anybody knows?

Gotta help those who will follow my path.

This guy had a problem with both Ax200 amd ax210: https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/m92zvl/intel_bluetooth_issues_and_amd_motherboards/

Edit 5: Last for today, found this, I'll try it tomorrow:

PC wont boot windows, monitor black screen

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 02:36 PM PDT

A recent problem occured to me. I was playing a game and after turning it off I had problems with my internet so I decided to restart the PC through windows. After clicking the restart button the monitor turned off but the fans as well as all the RGB on the case weren't turning off for a good minute so I force shut it. After leaving it for a few minutes, unplugging the power and putting it back in I tried to boot it again but again fans spin, rgb on RAM and case on but monitor doesn't show anything... Also my mouse just stopped working as well, it doesn't react being put in any USB ports.

    What to do now?

Wraith Prism Cooler Retention Lever Broke - Cannot get the Ryzen CPU off

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 02:27 PM PDT

    Hi guys!

I ran into a problem today when I was trying to upgrade my Wraith Prism Cooler to an AIO Liquid Cooler. When I try to reach for the retention lever to loosen the retention on the CPU, it was actually broken in half (attached pictures below). However, the retention of the cooler is still on the CPU and the latches have not loosened.

Now, I cannot get the CPU cooler off the CPU/MOBO since the retention is still there.

I was wondering how I can get the retention of the latches on both sides off without having the black lever to undo the tightness between the cooler and CPU.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Call of Duty instability on PC?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 05:56 AM PDT

If you are a new PC builder, don't stress if you are having troubles with Warzone or other call of duty games.

So I have been through thick and thin with trying to fix call of duty (Warzone + cold war). I've tried reinstalling, changed to dx11, tried different gpus (3070 & 6800xt), rebooted PC, messing around with xmp and bios, scan and repair files and more, but the problem remains; call of duty is unstable on PC and there seems to be no clear fix.

Susceptible to crashes, random fps drops, stuttering and instability in launching the game (Would you like to boot in SAFE mode?).

The only somewhat fix that I found helpful was lowering some settings.

Hope this saves some of you hours of troubleshooting or gives you some insight :)

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 10:02 AM PDT

    100600k 16gb ram blah blah.

only thing i need is a graphics card. currently using 10600k igpu. unfortunately im only able to play minecraft haha. i have a limited budget of £200 for a gpu. the gtx 970 seems to be the best option but they are around £180 used! way over what its worth but the 1660 supers are £400+. sucks! Should i spend £180 on a gtx 970? i do want a gpu now rather than later. any input as i feel i dont have much choice.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

The motherboard seems to be getting power because some of the lights are coming on, but the CPU, GPU, PSU, and case fans are not spinning when I flip the power switch. Furthermore, the RAM sticks and case lights are not lighting up and neither are the status lights on the motherboard. I also do not hear any beeping or whirring from the system and the monitor I have it hooked up to just shows a no signal message and goes to sleep.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

    • Reseated the CPU twice, even without the fan attached. No visible damage to it.
    • Reseated both RAM sticks, also twice. No changes
    • Plugged HDMI into mobo and gpu ports, no effect
    • Shorted the board using the CLRTC prongs three times, no effect aside from restarting the LEDs on the back of the board.
    • Tried to download a BiOS update to a flash drive and start it up attached to the mobo, without effect.

Need feedback on a pc build for a casual user

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 10:56 AM PDT

Hello, I wanted to build a mid-range PC for my sister who does very basic work. Her work includes browsing the internet, creating spreadsheets, streaming shows, youtube and so on. I hope you get the gist. It might also act as a general use desktop for my parents as well.

Currently, the build below is what I have come up with based on my own personal research. Could you please give feedback on it? I am also open to suggestions for part replacements/additions/subtractions. Thank you in advance!

    Processor I5 11400F

    Motherboard H510 ME-0

    Ram 8 GB

    480 GB SSD

    2 TB HDD

    Cabinet

Optional High range cabinet with SMPS

I just built my standing desk to go along with my PC setup, but I'm really worried about cable strain, especially on my peripheral cables. Are there any tips or tricks anyone can recommend to fix it?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 02:40 PM PDT

I know this isn't a build-specific topic, but I'm not sure where else to post. Either way, my desk is made from a Vivo frame and a birch butcher block. The dimensions are 50in x 25in x 1 1/2in. I normally have the desk at a height of 28in when sitting and 40in when standing, with my PC on the floor next to the right leg.

Everything works flawless so far, except for the fact that I'm worried about the strain the movement of the desk is putting on my peripheral cables, mainly my keyboard, but also my DAC, mic, and webcam. Right now, I'm using a Velcro cable sleeve, and have that Ziptied to the cable management tray I mounted to the back. It works, but when the desk is lowered, it puts a lot of strain on the cables since the other end of the sleeve isn't anchored to anything.

One potential solution I can think of would be to get USB extensions and just run those to my PC instead (since they're easier to replace if they break). Another option is drag chains, but it seems like a lot of the ones available are either proprietary to a specific desk, or they're just weighted at the end rather than bolting onto the frame of the desk. The third and final option I can think of would be to mount my PC to the underside of my desk, but like with option two, I run into more issues (i.e. - the PC is only hanging from four screws, plus the frame I have is in the way of where the mount would go).

I'm leaning towards the cable extension option with a drag chain combo, but between the desk frame, wood, and miscellaneous cable management stuff, I have over $500 into this project, and I'd like to keep costs as low as possible. If anyone can think of anything else that would be low-cost, I'd really appreciate the help. Thanks! And again, sorry if the post isn't relevant enough. I can take it down if need be.

Why are the LEDs on my RGB fans turning yellow?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 10:48 AM PDT

    Hey,

I've been using my newly built computer for a couple weeks, now. However, I've been noticing that, over the past couple of days, some of the leds have turned yellow, and more are continuing to turn yellow. Why might this be? Thanks.

Do better wire maintenance than I did.

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 09:28 AM PDT

Did a horrible job with wire management, and then to add dumbass to the dogpile, something made me think " Just pull the back of the case off " and I did. I saw the spark that fried my b450. Just finished this build three weeks ago. Moral of our story, you may not think wire management is a big deal. But trust me. It is.

Installing windows and I get error code 0xc000000e when i boot into the ssd

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 12:15 PM PDT

So Im installing windows with using the media creation tool on a usb (I just downloaded it today), and i go through everything like normal, and then when i try to boot into the ssd, it says that it has a missing or corrupted file and error code 0xc000000e. I've used the uefi and legacy versions of the usb drive, and used both the mbr and gpt file systems on my ssd. I don't know what the problem is.

    Upgrade suggestions

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 12:01 PM PDT

Hi everyone, I currently have a pc that I build back in 2016 and did a little bit of upgrading last year. The current specs that I have are the following:

    - Intel Core i-5 6500 3.2Ghz (4CPU's)

-2tb HDD and 128 GB SSD

    - 32 GB RAM

    - GTX 950 2GB

    - ASUS Motherboard H170M-Plus

    - No extra cooling system besides the basic fans.

I've been thinking in upgrading the processor to an i7 of current gen or 9th gen and adding a new graphics card, I want to support 3 or 4 screens. I use it mostly for gaming and programming. Any opinion is welcome thank you!

Is It Possible Build A PC to Match PS5 or XSS At Same Price?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 11:49 AM PDT

I am currently in high school and my parents refuse to buy me a new PC because it's too expensive. I told them you can build a new PC that's stronger than a PS5/XSS for less than the consoles.

My father doesn't believe me and is forcing me to decide between the XSS or PS5 he already got me (which aren't opened yet). How can I convince him I can build a PC for cheaper than a PS5/XSS with equal or more power?

I really want a PC so I can start streaming and making my own money.

Why do people put their motherboard on the box when they are building their pc. I mean like that box conducts as much electricity as a normal table.

    28" HP U28 4K HDR experience

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 11:36 AM PDT

Hi! I'm thinking of purchasing a monitor for my PS5, since it doesn't support my 1440p monitor, I'm gonna get a 4K one too. But unfortunately, I have no idea about a lot of stuff. Does anyone have any experience with this monitor? Is using 4K with HDR gonna make me have more input lag? I've heard the HDR is like the lowest possible, is it gonna be a lot worse, than normal HDR, or is it even gonna be worth it? Thank you for reading and/or answering!

    5800X vs 10850K

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 07:35 AM PDT

Okey guys, it's the tough one for me. Every PC I ever owned had Intel in it. Right now I have 4790K with 1060 6GB. I decided to upgrade and planning to buy whole new PC so I can give this one to my gf so she can play some games on it. But I don't know which processor should I go with. I recently build PC for my brother with 10850K in it, it works like a charm but I wonder if I should try going with Ryzen in mine. I never had anything from AMD but I am not an Intel fan so I am considering a change. Prices are very similiar(Ryzen is 20$ cheaper). Any sugestions?

And if 5800X is the way to go which MOBO I should go for? I am planning to buying 6700XT.

I may OC a little but I am no expert so I prefer raw performance for now. I will be using my PC mostly for gaming with some apps open(discord etc.) and maybe will stream some gameplay for my friends sometimes.

Edit I was like fuck it and went with 5900X. I hope I won't regret this decision lel
