It sucks that friends who I've convinced to try PC Gaming are completely losing interest because they can't get parts :(

    Posted: 25 May 2021 10:39 AM PDT

I've been a long time PC gamer and have several friends who over the years, expressed significant interest in building their own PC and gaming. Awesome - I thought. More people to game with always makes for a better time.

When COVID hit, obviously people spent more time at home, needing better rigs to work off, etc etc. So I spent a bit of time with each of them trying to pick out parts based on their needs and budget. Most of them opted to wait for 3xxx series cards before starting their builds. Which, in hindsight was probably a bad idea.

A lot of them were so excited, they had some parts ready. Watched so many videos and tutorials. Even bought games. I was pumped for them too.

But when it became clear that stock issues wouldn't resolve in the short-term... A lot lost interest. These are just normal guys - not the type who would set up discord alerts, do all the extra tasks required to secure a card.

Some opted to just get consoles, others bought laptops because they needed something for work. Slowly, each one just lost interest and honestly I don't blame them.

I don't really know where I wanted to go with this... I guess I just wanted to rant. We're all getting to the age where we have our own things going on (jobs, girlfriends, moving out, etc.) And... I was just hopeful that our gaming PCs would be a way for us to still come together as friends and share time with one another.

It just sucks knowing that my friends, who honestly were poised to pick up the hobby that I love long-term, are just completely soured and turned off from the whole experience. I'm just sad really. I was so happy to share my world with them and now they think the industry simply doesn't want them as customers.

Just thought I'd share my frustration with people who get it. Thanks for reading.

Got a refurbished "gaming" PC, but looks like GPU is semi-dead. Any possible fixes?

    Posted: 25 May 2021 06:09 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I recently purchased a pre-built refurbished PC from Newegg (specs: i5-4570 3.20GHz, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD, GeForce GT 1030, Windows 10 Pro). It said "gaming," but it's constantly lagging and freezing during gameplay. Before buying, I checked the FPS benchmarks, and it should deliver at least 30 FPS in World of Warcraft or GTAIV, yet it's overheating and roaring so loud I'm afraid it'll die on me.

I contacted Newegg, and they told me that my expectations for FPS weren't their responsibility. The PC works fine otherwise, so the lags aren't something they can help me with. As I see it, I currently have two options - look for a new GPU or somehow fix the one I have.

I've upgraded drivers to the latest version I could find, 466.27, but it didn't help. Maybe I should replace the fan or thermal paste? I'd prefer to fix it because I think it'll be cheaper than splurging on a new GPU.

But if it's unfixable, I'll obviously have to look for a new one that fits my pretty tight budget of $100. I've searched for ones from this list https://techcompact.com/best-graphics-card-under-100/, but most of them are either "currently unavailable" or refurbished (I sure as hell not buying anything refurbished anymore).

I'd really appreciate any advice or tips on fixing my 1030 because I'd prefer this option over spending more money while having an otherwise working GPU. Maybe some drivers can get it up to snuff? Will the fan replacement actually help, or it'll be a waste of money?

If you think getting a new one is a way to go - maybe you can recommend some stores where I can find a decent GPU that won't cost an arm and a leg? Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help, guys.

    Are second hand HDD reliable?

    Posted: 25 May 2021 10:27 AM PDT

Hi. I'm upgrading my PC to make it work as a server for a project of mine.

A neighbor is selling Seagate Barracuda 500GB HDD's with 2100Hrs of regiatered use, each at 8€. I know it's cheap, but I cant help but wonder if I would sacrifice too much reliability by buying one with this level of usage.

    Temporary gt 1030?

    Posted: 25 May 2021 09:48 AM PDT

Last year I thought about buying a graphics card ( a gtx 1660 or 1050 ti ), but...the prices are inflated and im not paying 400€ for a gtx 1050 or buying one from Wish or Aliexpress. I've got integrated graphics and I've been thinking of getting a temporary gpu, maybe a gt 1030, i know that thats not a great gpu, but if i can play, for example sea of thieves at high settings at 720p and having 40-50 fps thats not bad at all until prices settle down (right now i play at 30fps, low settings at 540p). Is it a good idea or should i buy a second hand gtx or wait to see if the prices go down?

    help with computer :(

    Posted: 25 May 2021 05:29 AM PDT

today i built a computer for the first time, and something seems to be wrong. i followed a techsource video and i'm pretty sure I did everything and i checked the wires several times.

i used a 3090 vision gpu 5900x cpu tuf x570 mobo nzxt kraken x73 aio gskill 32gb ddr4 (2x16) then swapped to gskill 16gb ddr4 (2x8) to test 1tb 970 evo plus m.2 ssd baracuda 8tb hdd corsair rm 850 gold+ and a couple corsair rgb fans all in a lian li 2 mesh case on windows 10 home

When first going to boot, my motherboard (tuf x570) has lights that indicate the boot order and those lights will stay lit up if there is a problem. When I first went to post, the Vga light stayed lit. In order to test the gpu, I plugged my old 970 in, and bam I got my first post. I figured my GPU was messed up. After setting things up, I restarted, and it wouldn't turn back on. This time the Dram light was lit on my mobo. I switched my 32gb ram with my old 16gb of the same brand just to test, I also took out the 970 and put back in the 3090. The computer started up again. So now I guess it's not the gpu, but the ram, because it shut down and started up again no problem now.

After setting things up for a couple hours and installing games, my computer shuts off in a league match. I try to turn it back on and it would turn on all the rgb fans, ram, gpu, and the mobo would light up the boot order. this time no lights were lit to indicate a problem. the computer sat there almost thinking it was booted but it never really started. now it is only starting up half the time, and when it does the fans stop spinning and then start spinning again and the pc quickly shuts down in a few minutes. then it will start turning off and on, on its own again and again. i once managed to look in the eventvwr to get the error, it was kernel-power, keywords (70368744177664),(2).

I'm just trying to get opinions on what the problem could be. GPU, CPU, PSU, Mobo, Ram?

I was thinking maybe PSU. Perhaps the 850 isn't enough for all the stuff?

Sorry if this post is long, I really just didn't know where else to post.

If anyone can help or knows anything I would really appreciate it!

Is anyone else getting disappointing performance with RTX 3070?

    Posted: 25 May 2021 11:29 AM PDT

Title says it all, I really want to know if anyone else has issues with performance on 3070's? I have checked everything now and the only thing that I could think is giving me bad performance is my RAM, as the kits are mismatched, but I tried GTAV with the mismatched kits and a single kit clocked higher and the performance was still bad. Im wondering if my mismatched ram would cause 60fps difference between what I get and what the benchmark of the exact same specs get.

    Ram help

    Posted: 25 May 2021 11:41 AM PDT

Hello everyone! I've had 2x4 gb kingston ram in my pc clocked at 1333mhz stock (using it at 1600mhz). Today, I've put one stick of eight gb Corsair ram into my pc, clocked at stock 1600mhz, and my pc turned on perfectly fine, and recognized 16gb memory just fine, I also ran a memory test, and it didn't crash while I was using 15gb. But I have a question. Is there any downside of this? Is there a considerable amount of performance difference between this method, and a 2x8 method? Should I buy 2x8 kit, or am I good with this setup? I have an I5 2500k, and I use my pc for gaming, and multitasking as well. Maybe I will use it for rendering in the future.

FPS decrease and drops over the last 2 months.

    Posted: 25 May 2021 11:26 AM PDT

Specs are 32gb 3000mhz ram, i7-9700k, RTX 3080. No overclocking, temps are fine. Over the past 2 months I have been getting about 100-150 FPS lower than normal. For example on R6:S I averaged 400-450. I now average 300 and get crazy stutters and drops down to 200. I have tried clean driver install, uninstalling the buggy windows update, and multiple nvidia control panel changes. Any ideas on how to fix this. Much appreciated guys!

    GPU crisis is so demotivating

    Posted: 25 May 2021 10:30 AM PDT

    Hello fellow builders,

    i recently buyed myself a 1500€ Gaming Laptop (MSI GP66, RTX 3070 130W, i7 10750h ) in Germany.

FPS are great but i just cant stand those loud fan noises meanwhile playing not so demanding games (Witcher 3). I undervolt my cpu, i adjust my fans, my cpu and gpu are at lower temps but the fan noises are just to annoying. I need silence! So i relise that i need a prober gaming rig.

so i think about giving my notebook back.

My budget is 1500-1600€. Should be enough right?

So i pick my parts for 820€ besides the GPU and i relise, i cant find any RTX 3060 for under 1000€ (new).

How on earth can anybody buy a graphic card right now?

I have no idea what i should do. Keep my Jet-Engine? Buy a PC without GPU...pick a used one for maybe 750-800€?.

    Thats so depressing and demotivating.

    What would you do?

    EDIT*

    A little update.

I found somebody on ebay who wants to sell me his RTX 3060 AMP White Edition for 700€.
Yes, its still crazy high but at least it fits in my budget and i can play at least some games quite good.

I will drive tomorrow to him, hopefully he will not cancel before.

What motherboard form factor should I go with?

    Posted: 25 May 2021 11:58 AM PDT

I currently either want an mATX or ATX. I like the compactness and simplicity of the micro but, I don't know if I should get an atx case if I want to later upgrade. If I go the atx route I would have more functionality but with more cost and space. I'm looking to use AMD and I have a rtx 3060. I won't be doing extreme gaming all the time. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Wifi card suggestions

    Posted: 25 May 2021 09:07 AM PDT

Built my rig last year and didn't get any wifi capability because I never needed it. Ended up moving and purchased a TP-Link Archer T6E AC1300 to use and the thing is an absolute turd. My laptop has an Intel wireless AC 9560 and has no problems utilizing my 5G network but this TP-Link struggles to maintain a one bar connection if that.

I have been looking for a replacement PCIE card for ~150 USD and so far have seen the Asus PCE-AC88 to be a large majority's recommendation and looks like it will preform infinitely better than the Archer while also being 95$ on Amazon. I was wondering what your guys' personal experience with this adapter was or if you had a different suggestion. A card with bluetooth capability isn't horrendously important but it would be welcomed and I'm really trying to steer away from a PCIE to m.2 adapter. Thanks in advance

Hi need some advice on Power Supply unit

    Posted: 25 May 2021 11:40 AM PDT

I used to have a prebuilt Alienware Aurora r7 but it was such a horrible Pack I ended making my own PC, the only part I carried over was the power supply. It's. 850wat bronze plus China power supply. I am now facing issues with it where the fan is squeaky as hell and even though I opened the PSU and serviced the fan with lubricant. It's still squeaky and annoying.

Now there is a pretty good deal for a Corsair CX-F750, 850was always way more than I needed anyways so should I switch the PSU or is a made in china 80bronze considered fine?

I could get a replacement at a fraction of the PSU cost. But new OSU would have RGB sooooo huge confusion haha

Appreciate any input. Have a nice day

I've almost got my hands on an RTX 3070 and I'm looking to build a PC around it that will last for a while. Most likely looking at using it for lovely 1440p gaming and some streaming too. For reference, my current build is a GTX 970 with an i5 6500 from years ago. My GPU has started beeping every so often which isn't a good sign, and got an opportunity to get myself a new PC so going for it!

I can get myself a pre-owned 3900X for £200 from a friend, and I was curious if it's worth getting that over spending an extra ~£50 on a 5600X.

Also, is the cooler I've put in the build good for what I'm looking at? I wasn't sure if it would be better to look at liquid cooling or not. I've not really gone into much research outside of the CPU/GPU/PSU at the moment. I was going to look at getting 3200MHz RAM as I believe that is what the 3900X would work with easily but on PCPartPicker the 3600MHz RAM was cheaper.

Open to any and all advice!

Is this a good budget SSD?

    Posted: 25 May 2021 01:25 PM PDT

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B088KLZKPQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_imm_JX028MMRTBY6P4RNXSGF?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

At first I was concerned due to me never hearing the brand before but I looked at the reviews. The advertised read speed is 520 MB/s. Some reviews said that the speeds were around and even a little bit above that but some reviews said that non native SATA ports can cut the speeds down to 274-330 MB/s. I've even seen some older PCs from like 2010-2011 give speeds around 150 MB/s. I've also even seen people use on ps4s. The PS4 part is interesting to me since this SSD is SATA III and the PS4 only goes up to SATA II speeds. The original PS4 HDD is about 100 MB/s and with a SSD can go up to 300 MB/s. So my 3 questions are this.

    1. Has anyone here purchased this SSD and how is it?
    2. Would you say this is a decent for a budget gaming PC?
    3. (This is more of a random one and something I'm curious about) Since the PS4 only supports up to SATA II speeds will the PS4 lock this SSD to 300 MB/s as opposed to the 100 MB/s the original HDD?

    New 3070 issues.

    Posted: 25 May 2021 01:01 PM PDT

    Hello,

I'm making this post for a friend that's having issues with his computer

    his specs are:

CORSAIR RM SERIES RM650 80 PLUS Gold Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

EVGA GeForce RTX 2060 KO GAMING 6GB GDDR6

WD Blue SN550 500GB M.2 NVMe PCI-E Solid State Drive

    AMD Ryzen 5 3600x 6-Core/12- Thread 7nm Processor

    MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX Socket AM4, DUEL Channel, 2x PCI-E X16, 6xSATAII

    CORSAIR Vengeance RGB PRO 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3200M Hz CL16

Seagate BarraCuda 4TB Internal Desktop HDD

New GPU: EVGA GeForce RTX 3070 FTW3 ULTRA GAMING 8GB GDDR6 1815 MHz Boost

    ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Now he bought a EVGA 3070 to replace his 2060, which was 100% fine and working underload till the install of the 3070. After he installed it and got the new drivers and everything, he went to play games, he started having some major issues including :

screen goes black the fans turn to 100% and he has to manually restart

screen goes black and no fans ramp up but still needs a manual restart

screen goes black, pc restarts its self.

The PSU we chose to get him was a RM650W and we suspect might be the issue. Even though Nvidia states for a 3070, 650w is enough. the box its self might have an issue.

any thoughts and or suggestions on fixes or has anyone had the same issue?

edit: gpu cables are not split from one or daisy-chained.
