    Best pc chair for cats?

    Posted: 21 May 2021 04:41 AM PDT

I've been looking for a new computer chair for a while, around the $250 budget mark.

Unlike most people, I don't want to keep my cat off of it. He really likes sitting on the back while I work or game and I don't want to take that away from him.

    Thanks in advance!

Any ideas what's up with it? PC is like 5 years old already, upgraded only gpu not so long time ago. Kicking case doesn't seem to help anymore:) It's Intel Core i7-6700K + Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo btw

Edit: Cleaned my PC up a bit but still same. I think soon ill just upgrade my cpu to 5600x along side with new cooler and motherboard. Ty for the help (btw noticed it happens like 50% of the time, sometimes it spins nicely)

    5800X Cooler Recommendations

    Posted: 21 May 2021 06:02 AM PDT

I am building a pc with Ryzen 7 5800X and 3600MHz CL17 RAM in a Corsair iCUE 4000X case with 3 front, 2 top and 1 back fans, case fans being on silent profile. I will run it at stock speeds apart from 3600MHz RAM clocks since technically it is an overclock to my knowledge. I've read a lot about 5800X being a toasty chip. Thinking of buying Be Quiet Dark Rock 4 unless I hit 90 deg C while working with blender or rendering video with it.

Would it be fine or should I just get DRP4 or something similar instead?

DRP4 and similar bulky coolers just look less appealing to me, would go with AIO like H100i Elite just for aesthetics but more points of failure and people report it being loud.

    Thanks in advance.

How to upgrade a Fiber router? Fiber Router suggestions please

    Posted: 21 May 2021 03:34 AM PDT

I've recently built my own system and I am planning to also upgrade my home network. I am currently using the stock router my ISP has given me and it is on a fiber optic connection. Can I just easily swap out third party routers? What routers do I need to consider?

What is the difference between these four pairs of RAM?

Besides the fact that two say "SL" (with a slightly different look) they look identical for spec information and all four have different prices.

    Need help with my airflow

    Posted: 21 May 2021 06:50 AM PDT

    Hello there,

I'd like to optimize my airflow and instead of taking a guess i'd like some more experienced user to get the best configuration possible.

(picture below) I have two 120mm fans in the front; 2 same at the top; and one last at the bottom. I also have a cooler fan. All vertical fans draw air from the front of the case and pushing towards the back. The last 2 (on top) draws air outside to the top.

I should add I'll probably get 140mm fans soon to replace all except the bottom and cooler one .

One thing I'm considering is turning the top-front fan so i get more air and it's push towards the bottom of my case. Would that be good ?

    PCIe or SATA?

    Posted: 21 May 2021 06:27 AM PDT

Hi guys. I have no experience in pc upgrading and need your advice. I want to install SSD and have read tons of information about it. I've seen on some forums that it's better to buy NVMe SSD and install it with a PCIe adapter card than to install a SATA SSD. They say it will boost performance (correct me if I'm wrong, please). The question is whether I need it. I'm an ordinary pc user, not a gamer or designer. Will I feel the difference at all?

Big air coolers and transporting the pc

    Posted: 21 May 2021 04:18 AM PDT

I am getting a pc that i will move by car fairly often. It will have a 5900x and i was thinking of getting a dark rock pro 4 as the cooler. My only concern is whether it can get damaged during transport since that cooler is quite heavy. I can easily remove the gpu but id need to reapply thermal paste every time i remove the cpu cooler and i dont want to do that up to twice a week.

Is it in any danger of getting damaged? Should i get a smaller cooler and if yes which one? I dont want to get an aio. Any other advice on how to move it safely?

    Thanks in advance

Lost two PSUs in a week...what should I be checking?

    Posted: 21 May 2021 12:21 PM PDT

Hi! I'm struggling to figure out where I should start on tracking down this problem. Last week my PC would not turn on, I tested the power supply (1yr old seasonic prime) and it was dead. I thought it might be a fluke and started the RMA process with seasonic. Didn't want to be without my computer for that long so I purchased another prime and dropped that in, it worked for two days then I had my PC crash during startup and was not able to turn it on. Tested that pay as well and it's also dead.

My first thought was to put in a claim through tripp-lite since I'm using their ups/surge protector.

Is there anything else I should be looking at and testing to try to get to the root of this problem?

I appreciate any and all help.

    Thank you!

Do I get a 32GB RAM kit to go with my current 16GB kit for 48GB capacity? Or do I bite the bullet and go for a 64GB kit?

    Posted: 21 May 2021 08:54 AM PDT

Situation: Cities Skylines with custom content is using more than 16GB of memory, and that is on an empty map. I had implement workarounds, such as manually setting 32GB of page file on a secondary SSD so other programs such as Firefox doesn't crash from out-of-memory conditions, and extensively pruning the amount of custom content (I got rid of a large number of props/trees so I could have more buildings). From what I've read, some players stated that their 32GB RAM kits were not sufficient for the game and thus also had to set large page files.

I used Thaiphoon Burner to extract details about the ADATA XPG GAMMIX D10 (2x8GB) DDR4 3200 CL16 kit that I have: https://i.imgur.com/nfHd8ZU.jpg

According to TB, my kit uses single-rank, but I could not find any other information to confirm that. ADATA's website and their Amazon sales page doesn't mention about the dual vs single rank information.

I'm using an Asrock B450m Pro4 motherboard. While I couldn't find any information about it using Daisy Chain or T-Topology, but since the user manual states that there is a large speed drop on two of the slots (I think the memory speed is dropped from 2666 MHz max to 2133 MHz max), I'm assuming using four sticks of RAM will make it harder to overclock the RAM.

Speaking of RAM overclocking, I'm using a 14nm Ryzen 1600 so four sticks of RAM will be a problem for Daisy Chain memory tracing. But on the flip side, 48GB of RAM even at something like 2400 MHz is going to be faster than 16GB 3200 MHz RAM + 24GB SSD page file.

I'm a bit hesitant on going straight for 64GB RAM because of its cost, especially with this year where everything is expensive.

I do plan on upgrading the CPU when I get Cities Skylines 2 (rumored to launch later this year or sometime in 2022).

    3600 vs 5600X for 1070 Ti

    Posted: 21 May 2021 11:38 AM PDT

Hi r/buildapc, my incredibly lopsided build (Ryzen 5 1500X on an A320 motherboard paired with a 1070Ti) is finally annoying me enough that I'm planning an upgrade. The rest of the build is staying put for now not least of which because of the current market condition (1070Ti, dual channel 16GB 3200MHz, 256GB M.2 Nvme + 1TB 2.5" SATA SSD, 60Hz monitor).
If the 1070Ti is gonna stay for another year or so (or until god knows when the GPU market settles down), would a 3600 be enough (I'm unlikely to upgrade the A320 mb if getting a 3600, I know A320 is the crappiest chipset there is but since this is sort of interim I don't want to spend too much)?
Once the GPU market finally returns to a point that's reasonable for me to upgrade, I'm eyeing 3080 or RX 6800XT level performance which means 3600 isn't gonna quite cut it. But at that point there might be a new Ryzen gen that's not on AM4 anymore.
In summary: given a 1070Ti with a potential upgrade to a 3080 or equivalent at a 1 to 2 year time horizon, is it more logical for me to upgrade to a 3600 in the interim (keeping my current A320 motherboard), and potentially doing a much bigger system upgrade (motherboard, RAM, CPU, GPU, high refresh rate monitor, maybe even PCIe 4 storage) once the market settles down a bit in a few years; or should I go with a 5600X plus a B450 motherboard now to future-proof for the GPU upgrade? (My non-gaming CPU-heavy workload mostly involves running virtual box VMs, usually not any more than 1 or 2 at a time. Gen 1 Ryzen's virtualization performance leaves much to be desired...)

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

The build in PC part picker is my old/current build. And it was totally stable. I had some overclocks on the RAM, but other than that it was stock.

I went to install a new GPU (MSI RTX 3060 Trio) and after it was seated and I powered it on, all fans were spinning on full and RGB lighting was on default rainbow. The PC wouldn't respond to the power button and the only way it can be turned off is via the PSU switch.

When the computer is turned on, all fans spin on full. There's no output, there's no booting.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

    • CMOS battery reset.

    • Reseated RAM.

    • Reseated GPU.

    • Uninstalled RTX 3060 and replace it with 1060.

    • Replaced the other PCIe cable with the other one that came with the PSU.

    • Reseated all cables.

    • Booted up with single ram stick in slots 2 and 4.

    • Booted up with no USBs attached.

    • Booted up with no GPU in there for 10 seconds, shut it down, reinstalled GPU.

    • Checked the CPU for bent pins and reseated it. Pins are fine.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

The stock orange LED for the motherboard doesn't come on either.

I use a KVM switch and any peripherals, via the KVM switch or directly plugged into the computer, does not register whilst the computer is on.

    EDIT:

Based on all of this information and everything I've tried, all of my components work except the motherboard. All components (CPU, fans, RAM, GPU etc) are all drawing. The PSU is also sending the power because it is getting requested to and all fans are spinning. The problem is it looks like the mobo is dead and is not regulating the power to the components, hence, why all fans are pulling at 100%.

Thank you all for your help!

Transcending the Console (Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the PC)

    Posted: 21 May 2021 01:53 AM PDT

    Hello all,

As the title implies (not so clearly), I'm looking to get into PC gaming. The problem is...a lot of information has been thrown my way, and I'm not terribly well-versed in hardware. However, I've saved up some money and am looking to get into the hobby. So, I have a few questions:

    1) The PC market seems really troubled right now. Should I wait to buy into this?

    2) Is it cheaper to build a PC or buy one?

    3) What parts do I positively need? I don't need her to be pretty; I just need her to run well.

    4) I'm looking to do a desktop. What specific parts can you recommend for a budget of around 1000 USD (if you think I should build a PC)?

    5) Bonus: Can you recommend any cases that look like old PC towers? I have a real soft spot for late 90s/early 00s computers, as that's when I first experienced them. I might even use our family's old mechanical keyboard (if it still works).

Thanks so much in advance. I know that helping out noobs isn't easy, so I appreciate your time and patience.

Odd issue: PC suddenly only working when one RAM stick is in place, no matter the slots.

    Posted: 21 May 2021 01:51 PM PDT

Motherboard: Aorus X570 Ultra 2 Sticks of 8Gb RAM

This morning everything worked well, then when I started my PC this noon, the displays stayed black.

What I have tried so far:

    • Restarting my PC
    • Making sure all connections inside the PC are solid
    • Unplugging all USB devices etc. before booting it up
    • Cleaning the RAM
    • Updating the BIOS
    • Clearing the CMOS
    • BIOS settings to factory default (no xmp)

When I have either of the two RAM sticks in slot 3 OR 4 the pc will boot. With a stick in slot 1 it will never boot. With two sticks in it won't boot either. No matter if I have them in 1 and 3, 2 and 4 or 3 and 4 despite all the other except 1 working.

So both sticks of RAM work alone (except in slot 1), but never together. They used to work together before for over a year. I have re-enabled XMP two weeks ago. Both sticks of RAM are on the QVL.

I did not install anything at all lately, nor did I drop my PC or anything like it. All parts are 1-2 years old.

    I'd highly appreciate any help.

    Thank you in advance!

I'm getting some major interference after installing a 3700x and I've got no idea what to do

    Posted: 21 May 2021 04:33 AM PDT

    http://imgur.com/gallery/usLmPMT (turn on audio)

I've recently installed a 3700x yesterday and have had major audio interference as you can see in the video below. It was fine before.

I've tried dozens of audio drivers and settings in the bios with no avail, reseating ram and gpu, removing every cable.

In the end I decided to pull everything from the case and I'm STILL getting interference with only the PSU, CPU and MOBO. No RAM installed and no CPU cable installed, only 24 pin. Still interference and this is the video showing everything and computer is off: http://imgur.com/gallery/usLmPMT

So at this point it must be an hardware failure, right? Maybe it just happened right when I switched the CPU for some reason.

What can it be, mobo or psu ?

    Mobo is a shitty asrock b450m-hdv r4.0

    Psu is a Bequiet 650w 80+ bronze

Btw the audio system is absolutely fine and works perfectly with other devices

Thanks so much for any help

Increasing RAM speed causes games to crash.

    Posted: 21 May 2021 11:10 AM PDT

I have 3200mhz ram that is reading as 2133mhz. I was able to manually set it to 3000mhz in bios (any higher and it crashes), however all of my games crash after 5 mins or so.

I set it back to 2133mhz and ifs fine again. Any reason its not able to tune up without crashing? Any help or tips would be appreciated!

    BeQuiet! 500DX stock fan qestion

    Posted: 21 May 2021 11:08 AM PDT

    Hello,

I'm interested in getting a BeQuiet 500DX case to help with thermals etc. I've been reading up on PWM fans as a way to have better controls over fan speeds (I work in audio but also enjoy gaming). On their website they give loudness and air movement specs for the case fans, but in the connector section it says they're 3 pin.

Essentially would I have to replace all those fans with 4 pin PWM versions to get that control?

Looking to build my second PC after 7 years

    Posted: 21 May 2021 12:59 PM PDT

Hello. I am seeking some help with a few parts of my build. I am upgrading from my intel haswell i5. I would like to make sure that this computer is going to last me quite a while so I have set a budget of $4000CAD. I do plan to add a 3080 to the build but for now I will be using my old PC's graphics (970) until I can get a new card. I do plan on overclocking the processor. I do want the build to have usb-c but wifi isnt needed. I did originally have the Gigabyte Elite v2 board but I heard there are bluetooth problems that are not resolved.

Here is my parts list: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/gDLG4d

I'm just not sure about the market right now with all these, the prices seem all over the place. I do have a friend in the United States that can buy some parts for me however with the border being closed it might have to wait until summer. I can wait if its a great deal and I will have more money to upgrade my monitor. Thank you so much for your help.
