This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

I bought a card bigger than my case could handle. So I had to improvise...

    https://imgur.com/a/AUnd3py

I upgraded my card and didn't think to check the length. As my first card was 11 inches and I didn't think they got much longer than that. My heart sank when I realized I might not be able to use the card or my case. But I was determined, so I chopped up the case to fit it in there. Worth it. Also to anyone that might want to comment on the PSU, the 6800 pulls 300 watts and the 5600x pulls 65 watts. It should be just fine.

Edit: I just wanna add that I made the same post on pcmasterrace and all the comments I got were very hateful, it goes to show this sub cultivates a much better atmosphere. So thank you all. Also, I know the psu is cutting it close but I fully believe I should be fine.

PSU fried $4000 PC... What do I do?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 10:00 PM PDT

I have a pretty high end PC, 10900k, 2080ti, and I got this 850w platinum thermaltake PSU. About 4 months ago my computer started restarting during gaming without BSOD, Its probably happened about 300 times since then and It's taken me a long time to finally narrow it down to my power supply. But It's too late, I know I should've replaced the power supply earlier but then I suspected my ram, motherboard or gpu was causing the issue. I didn't think it was the power supply since I had only had it for about 8 months, and it was a really expensive 850w platinum so I didn't expect a fault that early. My pc shut down today like someone had pulled the power plug and literally would not turn back on, It had a burnt smell coming from the mobo. I took it to a pc shop, turns out the psu died (was expecting that) but my motherboard, gpu and cpu all will not work with the numerous tests they did, they are fully gone. My parts aren't in warranty and I am pretty sure it's not covered if my power supply took them down with it since my 2080ti, 10900k and z490 msi meg all were perfect and without fault. I'm lost, don't know what to do now the only salvageable parts from my pc are the fans, cpu cooler and drives. I worked 3 jobs for months to be able to afford this pc and I have only had it for a year but now it's all gone because of a faulty power supply.. I can't get it back either since the Thermaltake customer support will only replace my power supply and not my expensive parts. I can't do anything now, just have take the loss and move on I guess... Sorry about venting this is just really hard for me right now.

Nearly 30 hours later... my first build finally works!!

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 02:08 PM PDT

    it's so beautiful 😭

Yes, you read that right. From taking all the components out of their boxes to this screen took me nearly 30 hours to do. I'm still in shock, I just cannot believe that I actually got everything to work. I've never owned a PC and have been using a Mac since 2014, but I got into gaming about 2 years ago and not being able to access a giant library of PC exclusives has been really upsetting. Like when I got into cinema a couple years ago there wasn't this huge catalog of movies that I just had no access to, but for gaming there are just so many titles that I've been super fascinated in since discovering them, and now I get to actually play them! Plus it's nice to have a computer with working USB ports and faster speeds and whatnot.

But yeah, I cannot believe that I actually got this far. If you look into my post history for the past couple days you'll see just a small portion of the hurdles and challenges I faced along the way. Last night I finally got the system to boot, and the lights and fans worked but I got no display. It was unbelievably disheartening but I knew I was at least close (just seeing no fire or sparks from my mobo was a relief haha). Just getting it to boot was surprising, like when I realized I had plugged in everything that needed to be plugged in and screwed in and whatnot I just kinda stood there for a while thinking "that's it?" Being so foreign to all of this and relying on the fairly useless manuals and much more useful tutorials (Paul's Hardware build tutorials have been a godsend for the most part) made me think that there was just no way that I actually did everything right. And while I did stumble a little bit after that (including needing to basically reassemble the motherboard and replug almost everything multiple times) I finally got here! I really underestimated how challenging this would actually be, and even though I watched endless build tutorials and read up on what to do and not to do I was not prepared for how hard it would be to actually do it myself. It's kinda like "good at studying—bad at taking the test." I thought I had everything down pat, but what the tutorials don't account for is for all those little hurdles and obstacles that can come about at any point in the process for someone like me who basically has no idea what he's doing. But anyway, I finally did it and I'm super proud of myself for having learned how to do something at this level of complexity (even if it really is just plugging in and screwing in some things). Super excited to finally explore the endlessly fascinating and elusive world of PC gaming. Thanks to all the helpful members of this sub who helped me along the way!

edit: ok 8 hours after making this post I can see why some people thought the photo was a joke. I guess it's a little less elegant than some of the beautiful builds found on this sub but hey, I have Windows running baby!!!

Over the past 6 months my 15 year old son saved, purchased, and built his first PC. I am super proud of him.

    Posted: 06 Apr 2021 01:15 PM PDT

Last October my son decided to build a PC. We found out later that this is a poor time to do that. He worked weekends when he wasn't in football, saved Christmas and birthday money, did research, purchased parts, and built this computer. After the hang up when it came time to buy the GPU I bought him a sketchy Chinese 1050ti (no English on the box or in the instructions) to hold him over until the market rights itself or the opportunity to buy a 30 series presents itself. We tried to build this in a way that the only shortcoming is the GPU for easy upgrade in the near future.

    Here are the pictures: https://imgur.com/a/T4hJ35c

And here is the parts list: PCPartPicker Part List

This is my first ever build after years of saying "I'm gonna build a PC"

    Posted: 06 Apr 2021 05:15 AM PDT

I started the actual building of this in December when I bought my first couple of parts as they were on sale, but I didn't have enough for all parts. It was only last week when I had more money aside and I could finish it.

Although it's missing a GPU, it is still my first computer that I've built myself

The specs and pricing in Australian dollars (AUD) are as followed:

    • Motherboard - MSI MAG B460 Tomahawk - $229
    • CPU - Intel Core i5- 10600K - $349
    • CPU Cooler - Cooler Master Hyper 212 RGB Black Edition (plus one of the included case fans) - $69
    • RAM - Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 16GB (2x 8GB) DDR4 3200MHz (Black) - $149
    • Storage - Kingston 1TB A2000 (SA2000M8/1000G) NVME SSD - $138
    • PSU - Cooler Master MWE Fully Modular 750W Power Supply - $149
    • Case - MSI MAG Vampiric 100R Mid-Tower ATX ARGB Case - $69
    • Extra Case Fans - MSI MAX F12A-3 Addressable RGB Fan x 3 - $39
    • Fan RGB Splitter/Controller - MSI Addressable RGB Control Box with Remote - $39
    • Monitor - 27" CF591 White Full HD Curved Monitor with Speakers - ~$250 (not included in total)
    • *Keyboard - Some HP keyboard that came with a pre-built another family member bought - Probably worth like $10 (not included in total)
    • *Mouse - Razer Naga (2014) - $4 (not included in total) - It was free since it was broken, I just replaced the USB cable for it which cost me $4
    • *Headphones - Razer Kraken X - ~$80 (not included in total)
    • Total = $1230 (all brand new parts)

I plan on getting either a MSI GeForce RTX 3060 GAMING X 12G or a MSI RTX 3060 Ti VENTUS 2X OC 8GB in June or July when I've put more money aside and when (hopefully) stock is available. I'd have waited until I could get all the parts at once but I didn't have much choice as I needed something to replace my laptop that barely runs anything (especially some software I use for university), so I just started buying what I could while still sticking to my planned list of parts. With the RAM, I know the CPU only supports up to 2666MHz, I just got the 3200MHz since it was the same price and would still work the same.

Also, as many might know, the MSI Mystic Light software is so terrible. Words cannot describe how little customization it offers. Even the fan controller with remote doesn't do the advertised lighting effects, nor do the buttons on it seem to work properly.

Edit: I forgot to mention my monitor and peripherals as I've had them far longer than the PC and can't remember the exact prices. Edit 2: Made currency more explicit and fixed some formatting issues.

Is a 1440p build worth it for £150 more than a 1080p build

    Posted: 06 Apr 2021 08:17 AM PDT

Hi I'm a 14 year old boy who has had an ps4 for the last 4,5 years and I want to switch to PC because all my friend did too.

    Posted: 06 Apr 2021 12:59 PM PDT

As I said in the title, all my friends switched and now i dont have anyone to play with so i asked them how to make/buy a PC and they started saying all of the things like 5600x and all that. I had no clue what that all meant so I looked it up and in total it would be around 1500? Yeah so that's not gonna work for me because my family is financially not that rich. My budget is MAX: 350 Dollars because I saved up for 4 years now, is there any way to make/buy a PC for that amount? The games I am looking to play are: Paladins, Overwatch, Apex Legends and Warzone. Can anybody please give me some tips about what to buy if I have enough money?

I’m selling my GPU, what can I do to minimize the risk of being scammed?

    Posted: 06 Apr 2021 11:38 AM PDT

    Hi,

I'm looking to sell my 1080Ti to a guy on FB Marketplace. As a very precautious person, I've been thinking of all the ways that I could be screwed over by this buyer such as him taking my GPU and swap the parts he needs with broken ones and deemed my GPU broken. He could also simply swap my GPU with a broken unit and wants to return.

Some ways that I could fool proof myself from those scam attempts are me taking a video showing that the GPU is working fine with games and the fans running fine. I'd show the date to show it's recent. Another way is for me to record the S/N so he can't swap it and return a broken one to me.

Is there any other things that I should do to minimize the risk of being scammed?

    Thanks!

    Office chair help.

    Posted: 06 Apr 2021 12:53 PM PDT

I am a graduate student, entering a phase where I will pretty much be working from home+typing most of the day for the next year or so. I am on the taller side at 6'3". As it goes my desk is also on the taller side at about 35" surface height. I like working at a taller desk.

I have a chair right now, a workpro 1000 I picked up years ago for well under the price listed there. I have no issues with the seat part of it, but the chair is too low! I attempted to purchase a replacement/taller cylinder from amazon, but it dosen't seem to fit this model.

I know Steelcase, MH, ect make really good chairs, and you may be able to find them second hand. But I dont really have the resources to buy new or times to scavenge around for used deals (I am also not in a major city). No ikea either.

So what I want is a chair that is all mesh, and can be set on the taller side. Almost like a drafting chair. I also like to remove the arms. I do not need a headrest.

Some initial things I have come across on amazon and such, but really looking for any suggestions.

    • Flash Furniture Drafting Chair I suspect this is of dubious quality.

    • This other one from amazon No real reason, just matched requirements.

    • Kroy I could use the extra tall cylinder to raise it up ( haven't returned the cylinder yet). I have seen this spoken about in the same sentence as Hyken or Dexly.

    Temporarily using underpowered psu?

    Posted: 06 Apr 2021 02:04 PM PDT

Quick question. It would make my life easier to use a 450w corsair cx450 psu for a few days with my 3600 and 6700xt. I don't plan to do any gaming in that time. It's one of the newer, grey versions.

As I understand it unless I'm gaming the gpu shouldn't go anywhere near full draw so should be fine, but anything I'm missing?

Reasoning is I bought an sfx psu as part of a move to sff, but the mobo power doesn't reach in my current case.

    Where to buy old CPU’s?

    Posted: 06 Apr 2021 01:49 PM PDT

I recently found an old mini pc in and drawer, the only thing is that it is pretty old (from around 2007-2008) and it has an C2D T5500 (mobile), and it's pretty slow. I like to tinker around with pc's, and want to upgrade the cpu in this thing, but where can I find and purchase such old CPU's?

Looking for a decent, inexpensive cooler for an i5-11600k without OC.

    Posted: 06 Apr 2021 01:39 PM PDT

I am building a PC to serve Plex content but would also like to be able to run games like Doom Eternal occassionaly. The build will be bare bones as I am reusing some equipment but I will be needing to purchase the PROC, Fan, MB, and RAM. I have a GPU (1070FE) and the other components already.

I am looking at the i5-11600K and 16gb of RAM that does not have to be top end at all. I really just need to find a Fan that will cool the Proc without sounding like a blowdryer that is less than $50. I know I may be dreaming but I am trying to keep the pricing around $500 for the PROC, Fan, MB, and Ram. Any ideas? Thanks for reading!

    PC build

    Posted: 06 Apr 2021 11:37 AM PDT

Hi guys, I built a PC in 2015 and it has the following:

Motherboard: ASUS H81M-D PLUS, Sockel 1150, mATX

    CPU: i5-4460

    GPU: amd radeon r7 200

    2x4gb DDR3 RAM

    1tb HDD

So I need to upgrade, I need to start doing a bit of video editing and stuff just doesn't run right on this current PC.

I have an old work PC (Dell) that has an i7-7700 CPU and DDR4 RAM, and an SSD. I'm thinking I might take that and put it into my own PC. This will require a change of motherboard and my head always hurts thinking about compatibility. Has anyone any suggestions? My tower is an Antec One, ATX and my PSU is 630w.

My new build doesn't always boot up. I sometimes see the bios splash screen but a lot of times not even that comes up. I get red led indicating either the cpu or VGA is not working right then the white leds on the gpu turn on and it starts over. Sometimes it gets to the splash screen after a few tries sometimes I just have to power down. I rebuilt everything and checked for extra standoffs and it wasn't that. I guess it would have to be the power supply? I thought I bought a good one but maybe I need to spend even more. Anything else I should check that could cause this kind of issue?

PC just randomly shuts down and I need the power of strangers in the internet to help me with this

    Posted: 06 Apr 2021 05:57 AM PDT

Problem So my PC just suddenly keeps restarting randomly. I could be watching youtube for 10 minutes or playing cs:go for 2-5 hours.

Solutions I tried I tried reapplying thermal paste first because I thought it might have just been my CPU overheating and I've downloaded two software called HWmonitor where it displays my CPU cores at 60-89 celsius idle whereas the other software called Open Hardware Monitor displays it at 10-25 celsius which seems weird to me. Then I learned that you can check the temperature at the bios where it shows 55-59 celsius which made me confused and wonder about the meaning of life. I then went on checking the logs on Event viewer on every time my computer reboots and saw a critical level error and said the source was "Kernel-Power" with an event ID "41"

Speculations Someone said that it might've been the PSU having a problem, some say it's the CPU overheating. But I still can't somehow get a concrete answer

My specs are: AMD APU a6-6400k AMD Radeon HD 8470D

Any help would be very appreciated :>

PC wont boot after leaving Bios, unless i reset CMOS every time.

    Posted: 06 Apr 2021 02:06 PM PDT

So My specs are as follow:

R5 5600x (AIO cooled) Asus R Strix etc 3070 oc Msi Mag b550 tomahawk (flashed bios successful) 32gb 4 sticks of Corsair vengeance RGB pro WD nvme m.2 500gb Sea gate barracuda 2tb hdd EVGA 850w gold

I flashed bios and update most current bios on msi website for the b550 tomahawk, the PC runs great until i tried to change settings in bios like adjusting DRAM frequency to manufactures' rating from 2133mgh to 3200mgh, when i went to exit bios my PC wouldn't boot, so i reset CMOS and i booted, i reset my computer to enter bios again to see Dram was still at 2133, obviously because i reset CMOS, however i exit bios again and same thing it didn't boot and red LED cpu light was on, so i reset CMOS again and this time i did not enter bios and PC worked fine, i though to try again a week later because i thought the problem was my MSI mobo trying to boot to an external hard drive, but that was not the case, now i have to reset CMOS again, and this leaves me with the problem of never being able to change settings in Bios because i have to reset CMOS every time in order to use my PC.

Is it worth going for mini-itx?

    Posted: 06 Apr 2021 06:32 AM PDT

So my pc's about 4 years old now, but even back then the components weren't high end. So i figured it's time 4 a new pc.

Now, it's quite simple. I really love the idea of a console-like pc. I have all the specs for both mini-itx and atx. In this case (no pun intended xD), i just wanna know what you guys think is more worth it (not money wise tho).

    Pros of mini-itx:

    • i can use at as a console if i want to - just put it somewhere next to the tv, plug it in and thats it

      • portability - my friend has the same case I'm thinking of buying and he can literally put it in his back pack

    Pros of atx:

    • cheaper cooling - fans are usually enough, where as it's better for mini itx to have an aio (cpu wise)

    • more slots (pcie, sata, nvme etc)

    • can add aditional usb slots, dvd-rw drive, even floppy disk if i want to, through sata

I purposely didn't mention any of the specs, as it's unimportant in this case

Planning to upgrade PC. What should I leave and what should I replace?

    Posted: 06 Apr 2021 01:50 PM PDT

    My current specs are:
    - Intel Core i7 Skylake
    - 16GB (8x2) RAM DDR4
    - Nvidia GeForce GTX 660

I know that I need to get a new GPU but was wondering if I should get more RAM/new CPU to avoid bottlenecking. I have 2 questions

    1. Which GPU would you recommend, thinking that GTX 30XX are now super overpriced and hard to come by
    2. Should I change something more? Is my CPU already outdated? Is 16GB of RAM enough?

Gigabyte System Information Viewer, shows wrong Processor Socket.

    Posted: 06 Apr 2021 01:49 PM PDT

I've been trying to update the BIOS on my Gigabyte B460M mobo so I can use Resizable BAR but can't for some reason. Looked around for possible reasoning & found out from the Gigabyte System Info. Viewer reads my processor as having a LGA1151 socket instead of LGA1200. I have a i7-10700F which is a LGA1200. Any ideas how can get this fixed while i wait for gigabyte to answer? Thank you in advance! PS: I'm a PC newbie.
