If you plan to build a PC right now, get the GPU first. I built my PC in October and still can’t get a 3070

PC stuck in boot loop, not reaching BIOS, red light on CPU & fans spinning.

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 10:03 PM PST

hi, I'm not sure where else to post this, so I'm sorry if I'm in the wrong place. the pc I built a year and a half ago is no longer booting up. the last couple weeks, it's been shutting off at random, but boots back up when I leave it off for a minute. I replaced the psu & that sort of helped, but it shut off yesterday & won't turn on anymore. I press the power button, mobo lights are white (usually red but I don't know if that makes a difference) & CPU light is solid red. fans start up for maybe 2 seconds, then it all shuts down. I've flashed BIOS, taken out the ram 1 at a time & swapped them around, took out the gpu, ssd & all usbs as well, cleared cmos & tested a new power supply. nothing has changed at all, except for getting the ram light when both sticks of ram were removed. I don't have a speaker so I don't hear beeps. I don't know where to go from here. I haven't touched the pc so the CPU pins couldn't have been bent and I didn't change any parts or do anything. my CPU temps had never been high so I don't think it's that. all of the capacitors on my mobo look perfectly fine. I have a b450 tomahawk, ryzen 5 3600, rtx 2060 6gb, and a evga 650 g3. the whole build has worked perfectly until yesterday.

    Should I upgrade my pc?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 11:40 AM PST

Lately I have been thinking about improving my pc but I don't know much about what components I have to buy and change.

    My pc has the following:

    - Motherboard : H110 Gaming Infinite(MS-B915)

    - Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7400 CPU @ 3.00GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.0GHz

    - Graphic card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti

    - Memory: 8192MB RAM

What would you recommend me change and what to buy? Thanks :)

I don't know if it is better to change some components or directly sell the pc and buy a better one. In case of buying a new one, which one would you recommend?

How to force my BIOS to use PCIe 3.0 instead of 4.0?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 12:22 PM PST

So I have just upgraded my system with a RTX 3070. I have a SFF PC, so I need to use a riser cable, and my riser cable is 3.0. There is really not much benefit for 4.0 so I don't care, but for now I had to take my PC apart, to take the mobo out, so I can plug the GPU in the motherboard. In order to be able to build it together, I would need to set in the BIOS to force PCIe 3.0 instead of 4.0. I'm reading a lot of people are in the same boat, and many months ago they were using some temporary version of BIOS or something that made it work. Now I am on the latest BIOS (1.80) and can't get to figure it out how to downgrade to 3.0. Can someone help me?

700W PSU Gold 80+ enough for AMD 5800x and Gaming OC 6800 XT?

Intel is a steal right now?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 07:12 AM PST

So I have a Ryzen 5 3600 and an Asus Prime X570-P for around 16 months now. Serves me well, can't complain. However a new Ryzen 5 3600 in Serbia is 185 euros, which a decent price. Well decent if the following 3 CPU's didn't exist:

    i5 10400F - 125 euros

    i7 10700F - 240 euros

    i9 10900F - 330 euros

I know that these SKU's can't overclock, but I don't see how that would change their amazing value. You can also get a decent board like the MSI MAG B460 Mortar for 115 euros that can handle an i9. And we all know how much RAM speed matters (not) for Intel processors. For those wondering Ryzen 7 3700x is 285 euros and Ryzen 9 3900x is 415 euros, so yeah not worth it.

Doesn anyone think that an Intel is a budget king right now, ignoring the Ryzen 5000 (for it's unavailability) and the upcoming Rocket Lake that maxes at 8 cores (pathetic)? We also have Z590 boards here for those who need PCI E 4.0, they are fairly price too (for now).

New Build - No Post, No Fans, No Display

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 12:09 PM PST

    Hey all,

I'm running into a strange issue I have not experienced on a build before and was hoping for some help from this great community.

    The build:

    - Asus z490-plus- i7-10700k- 16gb Corsair Vengence ddr4- Zotac 1080- EVGA 850g2- 500gb sata SSD- H100i Elite Capellix

    The problem:

Completed the full build and went to boot. There was no fan spinning, nor did any QLED indicator light up. I tried removing all components but the mobo, CPU, and PSU to no avail. The mobos RGB lights are going whenever plugging in. And when I push the power button on the front panel I do hear a small click in PSU that seems to indicate its fan beginning to spin. Still no post or indicator light.

** apologies if this post is lacking detail and thanks in advance for the help **

UPDATE: So I replace the cable from the PSU to the 8pin motherboard power connection and got fans and more. Thanks for the help!

    I really like Building PCs

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 09:43 PM PST

Not particularly using them but really building them. I wish I could build PCs all the time but I'm a college student right now so don't have the funds to build more than one for a while.

You guys have any ideas on how I could just build more PCs? I don't really care about profiting off it or something if I build for others. Just so much fun and satisfying.

PC games keep crashing with the 3060 Ti FE!

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 01:19 PM PST

Here's a quick rundown: I got a 3060 Ti, seemingly didn't work even after much troubleshooting, called in an RMA, replacement 3060 still not working, BIOS update (Asrock b550m Pro4) seemed to make everything fine, felt like an idiot for calling an RMA, now games have started to crash again.

When I say games are crashing, I mean they are randomly crashing. Last week, I was getting crashes every 15 minutes or so. But for the last two days, I played a total of 5-6 hours of Witcher 3 (yes I've had a lot of free time recently) and not a single crash. I played again today, and we're back to crashing every 10 minutes (just game crashes a few times, but BSODs happening as well, again completely random).

I'm at the end of my wits here. I'm not an expert at this, but I'm not clueless either. Idk if it's relevant, but the last Furmark (free version) test I did, I got a score of 10,450. Event viewer shows me mostly no application errors, and even with the BSODs, it's not giving me any information that's really helping. I've run multiple ram checks, and no problems there either, all drivers are up-to-date. I also used DDU to uninstall and reinstall nvidia drivers. Components run a little hot, GPU and CPU (3060 ti + R5 3600) at high 70s while gaming, but that shouldn't be causing crashes I don't think. And even nVidia customer support just gives me generic troubleshooting advice really. I also swapped a crappy PSU I had previously with a Seasonic 650w one, so I don't think that's a problem.

What more can I do? Is there any better error logging software I can get, I'm willing to pay a little for it at this point. I think it's a GPU problem, cuz anything else I do runs completely fine. Should I get my system checked by Micro Center technicians? Or would they also just offer generic advice at best? I just want to play some games in peace!

    Thanks for reading.

If you’re looking to get a new GPU when they re-stock, YSK about BestBuy’s deferred rollout of GPUs on their website

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 08:56 AM PST

As many of you know, GPUs are extremely short stocked at the moment. The big issues with this are people buying them via bots so they all sell out in seconds. However, Best Buy found a alway to combat this.

I got a 3060Ti on day 1 from Best Buy, because instead of allowing people to buy all their stock at 6AM, they did this thing that I'm calling deferred rollout of the stock. They would open up the ability to buy for like 45 seconds at a time, then close it. Every ten minutes or so they would open it up again for another 45 seconds, and so on. This made it so you could hop in queue for a gpu but only a certain number of people could be in queue at a time, then 10 minutes later, you had another chance to hop in queue to get one. I ended up buying one from Best Buy that I got at like 7:45 AM when the 3060Tis were sold out on every other website by 6:01AM.

So, if you want a higher chance to get a new GPU on day 1, you should try to buy it through Best Buy, as their deferred rollout means that price gougers and data miners can't spam-buy all of them at once due to how Best Buy does it.

So when I opened my windows ten usb I accidentally pulled that blue tab on top off but I put it right back in,it should still work right?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 12:22 PM PST

I thought that you needed to pull that off to get the usb because I didn't see the usb on the bottom, but I didn't pull it all the way out I put it out like halfway then I put it right back in.

    Is my GPU dead?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 10:30 AM PST

So I recently replaced my motherboard since it was destroyed. I've tried turning on my pc and I'm not getting any output from my GPU. The fans spin at max speed and the LED's turn on. My drivers were up to date so I'm not sure why this is happening.

I even tested out my GPU on my girlfriend's pc and tested it on different PCIE lanes. Still getting the same results. Looked on the PCIE connector, found some scratches, but they don't appear too deep. Have these scratches bricked my GPU or is there any remedy for this?

Will a PCI-E extension cable work with a graphics card?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 01:26 PM PST

I bought a refurbished, pre-built workstation and the graphics card went kaput. I purchased a new graphics card but its much bigger than the old one and won't fit into the case. Would a PCI-E extension cable (this one specifically) work on the new graphics card I bought? Its an ASUS GEForce GT 1030 card. As well, where would I be able to place this so when it gets hot from use, it doesn't do any damage.

    Thank you in advance!

Does anyone use biostar gpu? As this brand is unfamiliar to me, I'm not sure if I should buy it.

Installed the AMD cooler last night, today I realized that I have purchased a much better cooler (Noctua NH-U123). Am I good to just attach the new cooler with a tiny bit of thermal paste, or do I need to wipe down the previously applied thermal paste from the CPU and start fresh ?

HELP PC was running fine and then shut off and won’t reboot

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 11:47 PM PST

Built this pc last July no issues until today when I had it running WoW and twitch, I went afk for 5 minutes and came back to my monitors going to sleep and everything being off. I tried to reboot and nothing. The mobo rgb is still on and when I flip the surge protector and psu the mobo lights go off, but come back on when I flip them back, but nothing else fires up. I had an old psu and same thing. I've tried booting it up without the gpu and zero luck there as well. I've checked everything plugged into the mobo and the psu. I'm not suuuuper knowledgeable about PCs but I'm out of ideas.

    Amd motherboard for a ryzen 5 3600

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 01:12 PM PST

    I want to upgrade my I5 7400 to a ryzen 5 3600.

If i understand it correctly the am4 socket will stop being supported this year.
So should I buy a b550 motherboard instead of a 450? I won't be able to use the motherboard for newer cpu's than the 5000 series anyway right?

I hope I got this right please let me know.

First time PC builder question about cooling

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 01:02 PM PST

    Hello all,

As soon as the last few parts come in (hopefully next week) I will be able to finally build my first PC. I have done a large amount of research on everything, but there's a couple things I'm still kinda unsure about that I need some advice on.

For starters, for my CPU I went with the Ryzen 5 3600, which comes with a cooler. If I don't plan on overclocking, is using that fan okay? Or should I just wait and see what the temps are at to be sure? Probably not a huge deal but I'm stressing anyways. Similarly, the case I went with comes with 3 fans, do I need to get any additional cooling or would that be sufficient? My gpu is an rtx 2060 if that's relevant. From what I can understand as long as the airflow direction is right the cooling should be fine, but I wanted to be sure.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm still so unfamiliar with everything and I just wanna be sure I don't make a silly mistake.

This clip just detached from my motherboard. Is my motherboard damaged now?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2021 10:48 AM PST

My motherboard is a Asus ROG STRIX Z490-A GAMING ATX LGA1200. My case is a Rosewill NAUTILUS ATX Mid Tower. I'm in the process of taking everything out of this case to put it all in a nicer one that I just ordered. This is my first time building a computer.

As I was pulling out the case USB cable from my motherboard's USB 3.2 Gen 1 header, this black clip separated from the motherboard header. You can see it still attached to the end of the cable.

Here's where it came from on the motherboard. And here's a shot of it after I pried it off the cable.

Is my motherboard screwed now? Or can I reattach it?

This cable was super hard to attach in the first place, so I'm not surprised that it was hard to remove.

This case is piece of junk and pretty much all the cables on it were giving me problems. Everything was so hard to connect; it felt like I was puncturing new holes in the plastic on some of the cables. I was so scared of damaging something.
