This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

It all started with a small gift, $3,200 later and the project is done.

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 05:34 AM PST

Last year, my business partner went out and purchased one of these: Samsung CRG9. Of course, he could not help but invite me over to see the thing. After I picked my jaw up off the floor, I left envious but happy to see he was happy with his new purchase.

Fast forward a few months and he calls me back over to his house. I was certain he got a new toy and just wanted to brag again. Low and behold, there sat a shipping crate with my name on it. He got me one. What a guy. Its a good thing I make him a lot of money, lol.

Anyway, my first thought was excitement. Then I realized that I did not have a computer that could properly drive the thing. Here is what I have replaced:

    • CPU - Intel Core i7-6700k (Overclocked to 4.6ghz)
    • CPU Cooler - Noctua NH-D15
    • Motherboard - MSI Z170A Gaming M7
    • RAM - 16gb PC-3200 DDR4
    • GPU - Gigabyte GTX 1080 (non-ti)
    • Case - Fractal Design Define R5
    • PSU - Seasonic X-850
    • Boot Drive - Intel 660p 500GB NVME M.2
    • Data Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 1TB
    • Data Drive - Sabrent Rocket 2TB NVME M.2 (added last year)
    • Monitor - Acer Preditor XB1 (27" IPS 165hz)

By all accounts, this computer was near top of the line when I built it in 2016. It ran most things at 1440p at least at 60 fps (and almost anything not current gen AAA at >100 fps). But that was then. This was now. 5120x1440 is TWICE the pixels as my old - admittedly awesome - monitor. In order to take advantage of this very generous gift, I was going to have to upgrade. My wife also needed a new machine (at least new to her, she is the receiver of technological hand-me-downs after all). Given that, I decided to start over from scratch.

First and foremost, I had to face the fact that top end computer components are hard to come by right now. I had to camp websites, discord chats, youtube channels with running availability tickers, the works. I ended up getting everything except the video card at MSRP, and only paid a bit over retail on the card, but did purchase it at retail instead of from a scalper.

Here is what I went with:

I also had a couple of extra 120MM Noctua Case fans sitting around that I put in there to keep my temps under control. I also pilfered the 2TB Sabrent M.2 drive out of the old computer, so I have a pair of them in the new build giving me 4TB of storage.

A couple of points for purchasing devisions:

    • CPU - originally I was hoping to get a 5900x or even a 5950x. No, not because I do a bunch of productivity that would demand it. Simply because I wanted it. Guess what, unless I wanted to support a scalper, that just was not going to happen. Benchmarks on the 5800x put its gaming performance on par with 5900x. It also has 8 cores, which should keep it relevant for this entire console cycle as developers write software to take full advantage of multi-core gaming. I originally bought the 5800x through Newegg but due to substantial issues with shipping and delivery I ended up re-ordering the processor through B&H. Newegg still hasn't sent me my purchase nor issued me a refund. B&H has been wonderful.
    • GPU - Yes, I overpaid. But not by much. The retail on this card is $1,099. I got it for at 26% premium, which is almost directly in-line with the new tariffs. I am happy with it. And this thing is amazing. I chose AMD instead of going team-green this time purely because the only card that competes with the 6900XT is going for $2,400 even at retail now (RTX 3090). Frankly, I don't see much visual difference with ray-tracing (I am visually impaired) but I do see huge difference in proper freesync and smooth frame rates.
    • RAM - 64gb is a lot. And no I do not need it. But now I can tell myself I could dual boot and run virtual machines and set up a RAM disk. I won't likely ever do those things, but I can tell myself I will. And that feels pretty good.

All in all, I am very happy with the build. I put it all together and it actually booted right up, which feels nice. My ISP is probably wondering why I have downloaded 2TB of data in the last 24 hours, but I have gigabit internet for a reason. Now it is off to play Cyberpunk 2077 at 5120x1440 and have it run smooth as butter.

Is This A Good RTX 3060 TI, 1000 dollar build?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 08:06 AM PST

I am currently using a mac and am looking to build a 1000 dollar computer. I really wanted raytracing and was going to get the 3070 but then realized that the 3060 TI would do just as good for what I was doing. I am planning on recording but not streaming with it and also plan on gaming with it. I am just wondering if this build is a good build

Are gaming chairs worth the invesment or is only marketing?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 02:56 PM PST

Hello guys, I want to upgrade my current chair with a new one. Here's the thing, I sit like around 8 hours since I am a developer, I play games and do work so im basicaly seeted all day (I exersice frequently and strech every hour cause I still don't buy the whole standing desk) so I want a truly comfortable chair. I wanted to get a gaming chair, a not so expensive one, because where I live they are really expensive. The thing is, I have seen that some people don't recommend them mainly because it isn't that big of a deal, that they are just marketing. What do you guys think?

Hope you guys have some recommendations, if you do, send me a link to a chair you really liked or that has lasted you very long. Thanks :)

Building gaming rig + racesim in one

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 12:25 PM PST

English is not my first language, feedback is welcome.

I am currently planning my next pc build. I am looking to build a full on gaming rig, but I would also like a race sim. Like with a seat and wheels & pedals and stuff. Due to spacing constraints and also convenience I have no intention of building 2 separate pc's for this.

I am also a fan of ultrawide screens and have found a nice 1440p 34" that I would like to use.

So to get to the point:
I am thinking of attaching 2 1440p Ultrawides, one for on my desk & one of the rig, and then one or 2 regular size 1440p screens for multitasking. So lets say 4 screens in total. (1 on race rig, 3 on desk)
The thought is to duplicate the Ultrawides so that they show the same thing, meaning that they should not be on at the same time.

I hope that is a bit clear, I have trouble translating the picture I have in my head to words, I apologise for that.

Can anyone think of any constraints with this type of setup? Will it matter that the 2 big screens are never on at the same time, or will it still be a big draw on the GPU?
Is there anything I should keep in mind while planning this? Anything I could do to make it work?

    Thanks for the help everyone!

Go ahead and get a 1440p monitor with my GPU now or wait?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 12:24 PM PST

    I'm on a GTX 1070 and a ryzen 5 3600.

I, like many others, am not able to upgrade to a new GPU just yet because of the shortage. But, I've had my eye on a 1440p 144hz monitor for a while and I'm wondering if I should go ahead and make the jump early. I'm on a 1080p monitor right now.

My thinking is this will be better future proofed for when I do get a 30 series card and with games nowadays having dynamic resolution and scaling maybe I can still get high framerates on a 1070. Besides, other than new games that come out I usually play MMOs and less taxing RPGs like Fallout 4 and Skyrim etc, and some shooters.

What do you guys think? Get it now or wait?

    Thanks

Looking to build my first ever PC - any thoughts on my planned build would be appreciated

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 12:22 PM PST

    Hi All,

So I have been wanting to build a PC for a long time now, and with my new job a laptop hooked up to my monitor is starting to get annoying. Also I know its almost impossible to get a 3080 and will probably just buy one of the overpriced ones on Ebay, but I still thought as thats the GPU I want in the system I should include it in the list. I will be using this PC to work, mainly light stuff with some financial modelling mixed in and gaming, where I play mainly Warzone and might jump back into WOW once I have the PC set up. I'm happy to answer any questions and really appreciate any and all feedback!

    MY BUILD:

    CPU - AMD RYZEN 5 3600 6-Core 3.6 GHz (4.2 GHz Max Boost) Socket AM4 65W 100-100000031BOX Desktop Processor

Motherboard - ASUS AM4 TUF Gaming X570-Plus (Wi-Fi) ATX Motherboard with PCIe 4.0, Dual M.2, 12+2 with Dr. MOS Power Stage, HDMI, DP, SATA 6Gb/s, USB 3.2 Gen 2 and Aura Sync RGB Lighting

GPU - EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 FTW3 ULTRA GAMING Video Card, 10G-P5-3897-KR, 10GB GDDR6X, iCX3 Technology, ARGB LED, Metal Backplate

Case - Fractal Design Meshify C Black ATX High-Airflow Compact Dark Tint Tempered Glass Window Mid Tower Computer Case, FD-CA-MESH-C-BKO-TG

Power Supply - Seasonic FOCUS GX-550, 550W 80+ Gold, Full-Modular, Fan Control in Fanless, Silent, and Cooling Mode, 10 Year Warranty, Perfect Power Supply for Gaming and Various Application, SSR-550FX.

    Storage - SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS M.2 2280 500GB PCIe Gen 3.0 x4, NVMe 1.3 V-NAND 3-bit MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-V7S500B/AM

CPU Cooler - Cooler Master MasterLiquid ML240L RGB Close-Loop CPU Liquid Cooler, 240mm Radiator, Dual Chamber RGB Pump, Dual MF120R RGB Fans, RGB Lighting for AMD Ryzen/Intel LGA1200/1151

P.S. I know 500gb storage isnt much but will upgrade that with another 500gb card ASAP after I've finished my build

    Edit 1: For the cpu I meant a: amd ryzen 5 5600x

Help! My Computer Shuts Off When Running Video Games!

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 10:28 AM PST

Hi all - running into a random issue that last few weeks when running high-spec video games, Star Wars Squadrons, Battlefront 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare specifically.

After about 10 min or so, my PC will shut off. Not crash, but just completely shut off like someone cut the power.

The only recent change I've made to my PC was a Gigabyte Gaming OC RTX 3070 back in early December, but this issue has only started in the last few weeks.

Any thoughts on what could be the source of this issue? What would cause my computer to outright shut off?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    My PC:

    -CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600
-GPU: Gigabyte Gaming OC RTX 3070
-Motherboard: MSI MPG X570 Gaming Plus

Please help me impress my nephew [17m]

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 07:11 AM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

Yes. My first time posting here, but I hope I did ok. Thanks so much in advance!

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

My nephew [17m] thinks I'm a "pro" but I haven't got a clue. Help me prove him right, please?

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

He's a 17yo, so gaming would be 1st priority, although he's convincing his parents it's for school work. Anyway, he's on a budget, so perhaps a focus on gaming (what it might be possible on this budget), and it will surely work for classes or everything else.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

650€ is the build he sent me, I'm guessing 750€ tops.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

Portugal, but can be ordered online from other countries if required.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

This is what he gave me. It's about 650€ including monitor form novoatalho.pt:

    Motherboard: Asus Skt1200 - PRIME H410M-A or K

Graphic: Asus GeForce®️ GTX 1050 Ti 4GB PHOENIX or Cerberus

    Processor: Intel i5 10400F 2.9Ghz 6-Core Skt1200

    Ram: Dimm 16GB DDR4 G.Skill CL15 2666Mhz Aegis

Disk: Western Digital SATAIII 1TB 7200rpm 64Mb Blue (I'm telling him to also get an SSD for the OS and critical stuff, any recommendations?)

Power source: Kolink Core 600W 80Plus

    Box: NOX Infinity Atom RGB

    Monitor: Samsung F352 PLS

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Just want to impress my nephew. Help a brother out?... I'd be most grateful

    Edit: formatting

Device to switch PC audio from Headset to speakers

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 12:39 PM PST

    Hi,

I'm looking for a device that I plug into my PC that I can plug my headphones and PC speakers into, so that I can switch easily between having audio out and mic in to my headset, and by a button or some sort of switch, being able to change the audio out to the speakers. Trying to find a device that allows me to seamlessly change as I please.

    Thanks in advance for ideas!

A few questions about building a budget ish rig for gaming and possibly some occasional streaming

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 07:55 AM PST

I have a monster of a laptop that can run lighter games quite well, but I have been wanting to build a PC for quite some time. Being able to run games such as Apex, fortnite, and Minecraft (I'm a casual normie gamer, I know) well at mid to high settings would be best. I do occasionally stream on Twitch just for fun, so being able to handle that would be awesome as well.

I have been thinking about using a Ryzen 5 of some variety and an RTX 3070 would be nice, but not required if i find something else that will be a good fit for this build.

At this point, I'm not really sure what kinds of specs I need, and what will be overkill. If it's important, I do use multiple monitors (I will also be upgrading my monitors so I'm not sure what setup I'll be using in the end will be) and would like to get into the higher FPS range if at all possible. My budget would be around 1000 USD, I think.

Thank you in advance for all your help! I really appreciate it. I'm looking forward to learning more about the world of custom built PC's.

Computer Restarting By Itself - Help

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 01:01 PM PST

My computer has restarted 4 times in the last 6 hours without me telling it to. The weird part is that it restarts so quickly, that I don't need to log in and nothing closes. Just my LED lights shut off, I hear what I normally hear during a shut down, then it powers up and is back again.

My build is ~3 years old. I moved houses 2 days ago.

I think its faulty wiring, just not sure if its the house or my PC. All advice appreciated.

So I'm reusing my Corsair RM850, my RX580 8GB (I'm waiting for GPU prices to drop and stabilize a bit, maybe new GPU in June? Hopefully!) and my H100i.

I'm mainly going to game at 1440p 144Hz, that's why I chose the 5600X. I really tried justifying a 5800X or 5900X, but I saw the benchmarks and in 1440p the difference is like 3-4 FPS, barely.

I chose the Gigabyte B550 Aorus Pro V2 because it's in the top tier of B550s for VRMs, has a great integrated soundcard (which I use to drive my high-impedence headphones), 2.5G LAN and lots of USB ports to use, since my Oculus Rift uses on its own 3 USB 3.0 ports. It also has great memory overclocking capabilities with a 6 layer PCB.I was torn up between the Aorus Pro V2 and the B550 Tomahawk, but the Tomahawk has a worse soundcard and doesn't have enough rear USB ports (only 5!). Plus, it's only 20 euros more.

I chose the G.Skill Trident Z RGB 2x16 3866 CL18 because it's it's Samsung B-Die dual rank. Really hard to come by a dual rank kit that isn't super expensive! I was going to get the Crucial Ballistix 3600MHz CL16 but they aren't Micron E-die dual rank anymore, they're Micron B-Die single rank. I wanna try to get as much performance as possible out of this build with a dual rank setup and I will try to overclock memory and Infinity Fabric as much as I can.

I chose the Samsung 970 EVO Plus because I don't think I need PCIe 4.0 SSD, since I'm gaming. The 970 EVO Plus looks like a good compromise, and 1TB should be enough for Windows and games. I'm open to alternatives though!

I chose this case from GamerNexus's 2020 best cases video: I like how it looks, it has 3x140mm front fans which are great for airflow while keeping noise low, it also has a 1mm front mesh for dust filtering, should support my H100i, and also has a quite nice "slot" for PSU with great airflow. But I'm open to alternatives here too!

I know I'm going to be bottlenecked by my RX580, but I've been dealing with my current build for way too long (FX8320) and I wanna upgrade ASAP. It's still gonna be a huge upgrade over my current 6 years old build and I plan to get a new GPU soon.I only have one doubt: I plan to mount my H100i top, which I wanted to do in my current build aswell but couldn't because there wasn't enough space between the motherboard and the top of the case. I'm going to be able to mount it top in this case, right?

Let me know what you think! I'm gonna start buying parts as soon as possible :)

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 12:47 PM PST

    Hi there!

I currently have this motherboard in my PC:

    https://www.newegg.com/asrock-b450m-ac/p/N82E16813157880

I bought this WiFi card to install on it:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B084JPFKQ5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have a couple really newbie questions:

    - Will the WiFi card I purchased work with this motherboard?

    - I have my GPU slotted into the first PCIE (I think), does that mean this WiFi card goes in the second slot?

Big apologies for these dumb questions.

    Thanks!!

HELP! I'm a Beginner at building PCs

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 12:46 PM PST

Hi, this is my first post. I want a gaming PC because A) I don't want to use consoles anymore, and B) I want to get into game development, so obviously I would need a gaming PC. I would really appreciate your guys' help. I'm looking at this type of build on pcpartpicker: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/3VqxNP

    1. Is this a good build?
    2. What about liquid cooling? Do I need that and if yes, how do I add it?
    3. Does the number of USB ports have to correspond to the ones on the case?
    4. Can you guys look at the compatibility message it is giving to see how to resolve it? It says:
    5. The motherboard M.2 slot #1 shares bandwidth with a SATA 6.0 Gb/s port. When the M.2 slot is populated, one SATA 6.0 Gb/s port is disabled. **Note:**Some physical dimension restrictions cannot (yet) be automatically checked, such as cpu cooler / RAM clearance with modules using tall heat spreaders.
    6. Will the dimensions work on this one? I'm asking about this because of the compatibility note it is giving. I want this to be balanced, as if I was buying this.
    7. Also, what Nvidia graphic cards are really good and give solid output and decent frame rate? I think the GTX 3080 is pricey and overkill. Like what is good enough to run CyberPunk at 60+ fps at 4k or 1440p resolution?
    8. I think the price on this need to be limited. 3k is WAYYY too much.

Thank you for all your help.

(Edited to organize the post, or it would be really confusing)

WD Elements 14TB making weird noises

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 02:54 PM PST

I just bought this new today and started copying loads of files on to it. About 3TB of movies. It performed fine but when it was finished it began making load clunking / knocking sounds. I ejected it and restarted the pc and the noise happened again but only when idle. When copying it's very quiet. I have many external HDDs of smaller capacity and they never make sounds like this.

How do I know what is normal operational noise for this unit? I'm thinking of returning but don't know if I should.

Does this look like a good build? I got a 3080 coming in the mail and am looking to order the rest of the parts. Is there anything else I need? Any cables, tools or anything. This if my first pc build and I want to make sure I have everything ready to go when I get everything in. I have a mouse, keyboard and monitor so I don't need those... I need to figure out how to get windows 10 as well. Any tips or advice would be really helpful!

For better or worse, I went with the pcmasterrace ZERO Ultra Build Guide. Bought everything except the video card. Alternatives?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 12:26 PM PST

Palit GeForce RTX 3080 10 GB GamingPro Video Card

Is the item that was recommended in the guide but it wasn't available at the time. So where's the next best place to grab it, or is there a better alternative out there?

    Thanks.

Weird error codes / Unable to boot / HDD not detected

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 12:24 PM PST

This is probably going to be long, but I'm lost on what to do. Please help!

    Specs:i9-10900k

    ASUS ROG Maximus XII Extreme

    GTX 780ti (can't get a 3080 yet)

    Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro

    2x M.2 Samsung EVO 1tb

    1x WD Black 2tb

My roommate built a new computer about 6 months ago. Last night he went to turn it on and it would not boot at all. Not to Windows or to BIOS, or a splash screen. It was throwing error code 92 VGA Load VGA BIOS. I looked into it, and it sounded like it is a PCI-E issue. After some trouble shooting and testing my GPU (GTX-1080) in his computer. I eventually figured out that I can get past this code by only plugging in HDMI to his GPU. If I have the displayport plugged in, this code persists. While the HDMI is plugged in, I can get to BIOS, however I then get the error code A2, or A9. This is an HDD issue. At this point I unplugged his 1x WD HDD, and still get the same error code. I tried to individually remove each M.2 drive as well, but the issue remains. I flashed his BIOS to the newest version via flash drive, but still nothing. While in BIOS the option for boot priority is greyed out, so I'm unable to even see if BIOS is detecting any of his drives.

I am unable to test his GPU in my computer as it doesnt fit in my case. I'm lost on what to try, and we are both getting extremely frustrated. If anyone can help out, we would appreciate it so much! Thank you for reading. If you need any more info or anything I can provide whatever I can.

Update: I managed to get BIOS to detect the HDD, but still not the NVME. I contacted ASUS support and they said I have to RMA the MOBO. Ideally I don't have to do this, and there is just something that I'm missing.

    RGB help!

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 09:37 AM PST

I recently ordered my first set of RGB fans. I got the Uphere white 5 pack. I have a white Lian li Lancool 2 and thought they would look great. I got the idea of ordering them from the LTT Intel upgrade because they looked amazing for being so cheap. It came with a controller and I plugged that into the asus 3 pin header and they do work but only are green. They aren't showing up in Armory Crate at all.
