If you're building a PC for a child keep that in mind

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 05:59 AM PST

I see sometimes builds intended for children less than 10 years old or around that age.
I did some builds for children and let me tell you, your child is probably going to fool around with the computer, children are clumsy, they kick, fall, spill their drinks, download all kinds of stuff, because they're children it's completely normal.

Whenever I see builds containing Ryzen 5s and RTX cards I can't help but think how much of a headache it's going to be for the parent when their child repeatdly mistreat their thounsand dollar gift. This headache from the parents can also turn into resentment for the child, trust me I've seen this, parents buys a gift they're passionate about and get frustrated with the child because in the end the gift was more about the parent than the hapiness of the child.

So when a dad approached me with a build for his two children, a boy and a girl age 9 and 12 I had to lay some basic rules:

-Keep a flashdrive with an image of windows somewhere
-Backup important/personnal files using an automated cloud system and a synced folder
-Put the computer ON the desk and a reasonable distance from the edge, not under, your child is going to kick when they get excited and the more distance to the ground the less likely a drink is going to be spilled on it.
-Keep the price to a minimum, your child probably isn't going to play Civ 6 or Forza with you and chose instead to play roblox, minecraft, fortnite and among us rigorously. Also the less expensive the less frustrated if anything happens to the hardware, the best child computers are made from hands me down parts or used parts.
-Cut corners on performance and invest in looks, children LOOOOOOVE RGB, they're crazy about it, if I sell a PC it's for a teen or a child and it's because it has RGB. I can sell a buildk with a 6th gen i5 higher than a build with a Ryzen 5 2600 simply based on the amount of ARGB stuff I put in. Really invest heavily on looks, pick a good case and max out those ARGB rainbow puke.

To that father I sold him two computer, one with a black case and red LEDS for the son, one with a white case and pink LEDS for the daughter. Both with hardware from a few generations ago and budget GPUs (1050 and gtx 750ti) and they're really happy on roblox and minecraft from what I heard.

TL;DR: you have to approach a build differently if it's aimed for a child, focus on looks instead of performance and don't spend too much on something you know will break.

‘Building’ a desktop set for my grandad to play Microsoft flight simulator 2020. Want to see if these are all good pieces.

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 02:13 PM PST

So first things first, my grandad who was a pilot his whole life can no longer fly and wanted me to get him a good setup so he can play as realistic of a flight sim that he can play in VR. Preferably 4K. I'm very uninformed when it comes to pc builds so that's why I'm posting here. I've compiled a final list of everything he needs and want to see if anyone can help to make sure I'm not recommending the wrong equipment.

For the desktop, found a build that seems like a good deal. Comes with a 3080 in it.

For the VR, this is what I found the best overall option for quality and price.

And for yokes and pedals etc... this is what he chose.

All in all I just want to make sure it will run vr and everything is compatible.

Edit: Wow this kinda blew up more than I expected! thank you guys all so much! I've gotten some mixed replies whether or not everything will work nicely for the flight simulator, I just want to clarify; He is okay if it doesn't run 4K smoothly. If he needs to bump down to 1440P, that won't be a big problem, just more or less worried about the nauseating factor, especially with his age and less than amazing eyesight.

Edit 2: He wanted me to post a picture of him and his plane so here you all go :)

Lucky Draw - my first ever build with a rare RTX3070

    PCpartpicker build

So i was planning my build since the beginning of November 2020, and i thought it was a good idea to wait until January for the new AMD CPUs and Nvidia GPUs to be able to buy the older generations at a lower price. We all now what happened in the last two months, so i was getting desperate to finish my first ever build, which is put together by myself from brand new components, with a help of couple of friends. I originally wanted to build a low-midrange bang for the buck build (1660s with a 10400f), lets see what happened in reality...

Originally i wanted a nice gaming ring for FHD@75Hz in an mATX build, but due to the lack of variety in both mATX boards and cases i decided to go with a small form factor ATX case, the Meshify C (i added the Meshify S2 because according to website my VGA cannot fit in the case:)). As we will see later, this caused later some problems... Since i was late to the Ryzen 5 3600 party, i quickly decided to go for the i5-10400f. Originally i wanted to spare some money with a B460 motherboard, but i slowly persuaded myself to go for a low-end Z490 board, i chose the MSI Z490-a Pro. My plan is to upgrade the CPU for a 10th/11th gen. K CPU within 3-4 years, IF it is needed, that i why i bought a bit more serious CPU cooler.

During Black Friday sales i was able to grab the Samsung 970 Evo NVME SSD (115 EUR, a bit overkill i know), the Crucial Ballistix RAMs for dirt cheap (55 EUR) and a bq! Pure Power 11 500W Gold PSU (53 EUR). My plan was to go for the 3060 Ti (originally i wanted the 1660s, but it was already out of stock in my country by the beginning of December), so the 500W looked plenty enough.

I started the new year with the goal to grab a VGA within 2-3 weeks. But as you already know, the first working day of 2021 brought a 10-15% price increase compared to December, and i panicked. All the entry level 3060Tis were above 560 EUR, and i did not really want to pay more than 500 EUR for a basic 2-fan model. To cut the story short, on 6th January in the early morning in my local (Hungarian) community forum i got the alert, that in one of the biggest webshop of Hungary there are some RTX3070s for 565 EUR, which is the lowest price ever for a 3070. I ordered it, payed and prayed. I just later found out what i really bought: the high-end card of the European brand of Galax: the KFA2 RTX3070 Ex-Gamer! It is a really nice card, it is quite heavy (1200 g) and do you remember, that i have mentioned how i could find a nice small form factor ATX case? Yeah, this card can only fit the Meshify C if you move the front fan out of the way (a bit more up), since it's 330 mm long! It is freaking huge! And of course i needed to buy another PSU, so i grabbed a Seasonic Core GM 650W.

I know that this GPU is a freaking overkill for me right now for 1080p@75Hz, but it was as expensive as a 2-fan 3060Ti so i needed to go for it. So probably instead of a better CPU my first upgrade will be a 1440p@144Hz monitor :)

PC worked perfect yesterday, now won't turn on.

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 06:48 AM PST

Gaming PC was working perfectly yesterday, played games, turned it off, went to bed, this morning, the power button doesn't turn the PC on.

Even weirder, this is the 2nd time this has happened. The first time the PC wouldn't power on, I assumed my PSU had died (even though it was a good quality one), so I replaced it, rebuilt my PC with the new PSU and brand new power cables and it came back to life, back to business.

A month or so later, it has now happened again. I see lights on the MOBO so the PSU must be alive but the power button doesn't do anything. I have tested multiple power buttons and nothing, I have double checked the power buttons work on other PC's, they do.

If it's not the power button or the PSU, I have no idea why my pc just won't turn on after X amount of time. RAM is brand new, CPU works, GPU works, everything was running smoothly just yesterday, now nothing..

Any help would be much appreciated.

    UPDATE:

My PC just came back to life all on its own, it was honestly kindof spooky. I wasn't near it, I didn't hit the power button, it just.. turned on. Does anyone know how that's possible? I think it might have been related to capacitor discharge. I performed one and then walked away for a few minutes and it weirdly came back to life.

I discovered that NZXT Cam can cause your PC to freeze, especially on AMD builds. This is unacceptable and needs to be fixed.

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 01:39 PM PST

I'm writing this post because, not only do I believe this is a massive issue for others to be aware of, but also due to the amount of posts I've discovered from months ago with no fix. I am seriously so pissed about this.

TLDR: After a LOT of hardware + software troubleshooting on my PC, I found a long forum thread about NZXT Cam issues. After disabling the software from startup, I stopped having ANY issues. It seems to mostly affect AMD, but please read the linked post above. Someone made their own NZXT software controller (in the thread) but I have not tried it out.

SOLUTION: Disable NZXT Cam from startup in software settings. When you boot your PC, open the app so that your custom lighting/cooling settings can load. Then, quit it entirely. Make sure that shit never runs in the background. Use something else to monitor your hardware temps.

    __________

I previously had a 4th gen i5 pc build and decided it's time to start the new year on a new system. Plus, a little graduation + new job gift to myself. I built a new mini ITX system last week. Here's my part list.

I decided I wanted to splurge a bit and get an NZXT AIO. I figured an AIO would be a great solution to clear up space while maintaining solid temps (the PC hovers between 30-45 degrees under idle and load, and very quiet). After some research I decided I really liked the custom display NZXT Z53 and how well it seemed to pair with the NZXT H210i case I have. This would be my first time going away from a standard fan system, but that only made it more fun for me to try out.

Upon boot, my PC was completely fine. I downloaded the exact same apps I had from my old PC and began setting up the drivers for everything. After about 4 days or so, my PC froze for the first time. I was watching Netflix and the picture froze, and so did the audio. I thought it was just Netflix, so I tried to ctrl-alt-delete but nothing would happen. My mouse was still working, so I figured I'd just close the app. Didn't work. I tried opening task manager but it wouldn't open. Restarting via the power menu didn't do anything, either. So I hard reset with my case power button. No biggie, maybe it was a hiccup.

Then it happened again about an hour later - this time I was watching YouTube. So my first thought was that it could be the GPU. I left NZXT Cam open to monitor my cpu temps (which would become my biggest mistake). Everything was under 45 degrees. Reinstalled Nvidia drivers for good measure.I started searching PC freeze issues with Windows and discovered a few generic answers. Some said to try a RAM stress test, so I downloaded Memtest and booted off a USB. After completing the 4-hour long test, it showed zero errors. Okay, that clears up the RAM.

Another post suggested it could be an SSD issue with a solution that involves a registry edit and manually finding drivers (not necessary on AMD since AMD uses native Windows Sata drivers). I followed the steps, and thought this fixed everything, but then my PC froze about 10 hours later. Before I decided to clean install Windows, I also tried to do an sfc scan (system file checker) which showed no errors.

Alright, well, I guess it's time to clean install Windows.

This time, I installed only the basics: Chrome, GeForce Experience, Logitech Options (for my mouse), Slack, Discord, and NZXT Cam.

After 3 hours, it crashes again. Perhaps it was an issue with my m.2 ssd then? I had a 500GB Samsung 970 evo that I bought second-hand from my brother. I ran Crystal Disk Mark and saw a healthy SSD. I even installed Samsung Magician to run a performance test, monitor my SSD temperature and also check for new firmware updates. No red flags. But for the HELL OF IT, I ordered a new 970 evo plus m.2 to see if that was the issue. Clean installed Windows again and within an hour, it fucking froze. Keep in mind, the entire time, the mouse still fucking worked.

Then I realized something: during the entire 4 hours that my PC was doing the Memtest, it did not freeze. So it had to be software. Thinking back from my old PC and the new one, there's only one fucking app that is new to me - NZXT Cam. So I hopped onto Google and typed in "Windows freezing, NZXT Cam" and found a plethora of threads about it, but it clearly hasn't been fixed since these are ongoing threads from a year ago now. I guess Intel builds are pretty safe from this issue. No idea why.

The thread I linked above shows that someone else did multiple testing and pinpointed it to be NZXT Cam. They uninstalled the software completely and had no issues. They installed it back and their PC froze in no time. What. The. Fuck.

It's been the whole day since I have disabled NZXT on boot and prevented it from running in the background. So far, no freeze. I am confident this was the solution to my issue, even if I'm writing this "too early." The thread I found had too much compelling info to let this go. I'm writing this post with specific keywords for people in the future to discover it on Google, and hopefully, for NZXT to finally do something about this.

My first impression of NZXT Cam was that it's great software. No joke, I'm used to Corsair iCue and I thought NZXT's design was clean, simple, and most importantly, customizable. I figured there was no way that such a good software could go and freeze the entire OS. Sheesh.

NZXT, please, fucking fix this. I cannot believe I almost had to RMA my motherboard or buy a new PSU just to make sure it wasn't my hardware.

Is it currently feasible to build a high end gaming PC?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 12:39 PM PST

At the end of March, I will finally be able to start saving up for a pc. My original price range was between 2000-2500 USD, and I was planning to get a 3080 graphics card. However, prices for all the new graphics cards have gone significantly up, and are now out of my price range. If they are not back to normal by May or June, would it be better to just get a prebuilt pc? It seems that PCs that come with 3080s are still priced at around 2000 USD. Sorry if this is the wrong subreddit for my question.

Is it ok that only one of my 3070 fans are spinning at a time?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 12:08 PM PST

I have a zotac 3070, and am wondering why only one fan spins at a time. Sometimes they spin together, but most of the time they spin separately. Is there anything wrong with that? Or is it just how the gpu is. Thank you in advance

    I Built My First PC!!

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 12:56 PM PST

    Build :)

During the beginning of this year I finally mustered up the courage (and money) and decided to finally build my first PC! It was a lot of work deciding and researching the parts I wanted but it was a blast building it! It felt like legos but pricier...I initially thought it would be a pain to even attempt it and indeed I had moments where I was genuinely stumped/annoyed however, I finally finished and I'm soooo excited to begin using it!!

Could I get some advice on monitors?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 11:54 AM PST

Hi all, due to some personal stupidity, I'm suddenly in need of a new monitor. Looking at a budget =<$300. Current top candidate is the Viotek GNV27DB, but I'm definitely open to suggestions!

    Extra Info for more context:

-It's going on my rig with an Nvidia RTX 2070 Super, so I'd like something that looks good with high end graphics settings.-Not sure on 4K, I'd ideally get it but I'm not sure it's worth the money.

-Displayport is a must-have, my card only has one HDMI output and I need it for something else.

-I'm somewhat sensitive to motion blur, although I've seen mixed information on how motion blur relates to response time, clarification would be helpful!

-My previous monitor was curved, and I'd like this one to be as well, but it's not a deal breaker

    Edit:
    - Looking for a 27"

-Ideally G-Sync compatible, though I'm not entirely sure how much that matters

    CPU F5 BIOS

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 12:44 PM PST

Does anyone know what Intel CPUs are compatible with F5 BIOS? I couldn't find a comprehensive list online, and I couldn't figure out which CPUs would based on Intel's website. I did see something about 8th generation CPUs running F5, but I wanted to make sure before I brick my motherboard.

Edit: motherboard I'm using is Aorus Z390 Pro WiFi. It's supposed to support 9th generation Intel CPUs out of the box (CPU I'm trying to use is Intel i9-9900KF), but my PC won't POST. Need an older CPU to update the BIOS, but I'm not sure what generation(s) would work.

Trying to upgrade my CPU, RAM, and Motherboard for less than $500

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 11:43 AM PST

    Hello all,

I am planning on finally upgrading my motherboard, CPU, and RAM after about 8 years. I got a new PSU and GPU (5700 XT) last year and have been waiting to upgrade the other 3. I'm currently running an MSI Z97 Gaming with 16 GB of Corsair DDR3 with an i5-4690k. Any modern upgrade is going to be night and day for me, especially in the CPU department. I want to spend $500 or less on a new mobo, CPU, and RAM (16-32GB), that lets me easily run most games at High-Ultra from 60-144fps at 1440p. I play a lot of Gears 5, ESO, Battlefield, CoD, Elite Dangerous, and Halo, but I'd like to be able to run newer games like Cyberpunk well too.

I also need a system that is okay with having multiple programs like Premiere, Slack, MS Office, Firefox, and Spotify open all at once during work. My current PC can do that so obviously anything new will have no issue either, I'm sure. I don't care about integrated graphics or overclocking.

I don't care whether or not my CPU is Intel or AMD, but I don't want to constantly watch online for parts; I need to upgrade as soon as I can since I use this computer for work in addition to gaming. I hear that AMD is generally a way better bang for your buck, but I don't want to wait 6 months or have to get insanely lucky to snag a new AMD CPU, so I'll get something new from Intel if I have to. I'm still open to options if there's an argument to be made, however.

What are your guys' recommendations? Thanks a bunch!

Is a CPU cooler overkill? and are they worth the money over using stock fan cooler

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 09:53 AM PST

Thinking of getting an MSI Mag core liquid AIO CPU cooler, really love the look of it will match my msi case and msi rtx 3070. However is it worth the £100 price? I'm gonna get a ryzen 5 3600 which i dont think i will overclock, however i personally think the stock amd cooler although not ugly isnt as clean looking as using an AIO, but performance wise is it worth it?

Can't get the first PC I have built to post.

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 06:54 AM PST

    As the title says, I cannot get my PC to post. Here are the parts;

    Case - Coolermaster NR200p

MOBO - Asus ROG Strix X570-I Gaming Mini ITX AM4 Motherboard.

    CPU* - AMD Ryzen 3 2300X.

    RAM - G.Skill Trident Z 3600mhz CL16 2x16

    CPU Cooler - Artic II.

GPU - I have a 3080 on the way but right now nothing.

    PSU - Corsair SF 750 W 80+

STORAGE** - Samsung 970 EVO Plus 250 GB

*I have a 5600x sitting waiting to be installed the 2300x was bought from eBay to update the bios and seems to be in perfect condition.

**This is installed on the back of the motherboard, it is essentially just for windows. I have a 2tb m.2 drive coming for the other slot.

So, the PC powers on. All LEDs on all components turn on no problem. It looks like its working. All the fans are spinning as well and I am almost 100% sure that every cable is in the right slots (I took a few hours to cable manage the system.

I have plugged it in via HDMI and Display Port to a monitor that I know that works and have connected it VIA two different HDMI cables incase it was a cable issue. When the PC powers on, there are no bleeps (I have been lead to believe that my MOBO would make a noise if there was something apparently wrong). I have made sure that the processor I purchased from eBay was compatible with the MOBO. Realistically everything should be working. Can anyone help?

****This seems to have been solved, but if anyone else wants to chime in, I would be grateful. Thanks.

    Any point of a 24" 1440p monitor?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 06:52 AM PST

Building my first PC some time next week, and in the not so distant future I'd like to get a 1440p monitor. What I'm wondering is, is there a notable difference between 1080p and 1440p on a 24"?

Most 1440p monitors seem to be 27" so was just wondering the reasoning behind it.

First build – 3600MHz C18 RAM too slow for Ryzen 5900X?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 06:35 AM PST

I purchased a 2x16GB kit of Corsair Vengeance LPX 3600MHz, C18 RAM (dual rank as far as I can tell) for my new Ryzen 5900X/3080 build. How much performance am I leaving on the table versus something like this Crucial Ballistix Elite 4000MHz, C18 (I would overclock to 3800, C16) simply because the latter won't fit under my CPU cooler in dual-fan mode?

    Adapting SATA3 to M2 NVMe (key M)

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 12:17 PM PST

Edit: Scrap SATA to m.2. It is apparently impossible. But if anyone has any information about PCI-e 2.0 11x to NVMe I would be grateful. This is what I found, but I don't know it will work.

Hi. I have this motherboard and want to buy this SSD. I want to buy it since it costs roughly the same as normal SATA drives, except it's like 7 times faster*.

I wish to use the two components together, but I will need some kind of adapter. I personally found this adapter, but you will notice it says that Sata cable can only connect to Sata SSDs, and that it uses SFF-8643 for PCIe SSDs. So I'm kind of stuck at this point.

*I'm aware the adapting and my outdated motherboard might lower the speeds, but as long as it's not slower than 500 mb/s I'm okay with it, as I plan to keep the SSD until I get a new motherboard, where the full potential of the drive makes it worth (since it's the same price).

Any help is much appreciated :)

Best GPU/CPU for 16 GB of RAM

I am VERY NEW to PCs and would like to know in a simple way what is the best GPU/CPU for 16GB of RAM within a budget of 500 USD (The Budget is all for the GPU/CPU) I mainly use Adobe Products like Premiere Pro and After Effects as well as Emulators like Dolphin and Cemu, currently Adobe works usable but better performance wouldn't hurt, however games like Mario Party 8 and Super Mario 3D Land run at 25 frames with everything else closed in the computer and as optimized as I could make the emulation using tutorial videos.

Also I'm not even sure if I need only a CPU, only GPU, or a CPU with Integrated Graphics (VERY NEW to PCs). I currently have an AMD FX-9830 RADEON R7, 12 COMPUTE CORES, 4C+8G 3GHz and the Motherboard is a BIOSTAR Group A10N-9830E. (Windows 10 and 64 bits)

(In the offchance this are already good components and I'm just not knowing how to use them please tell me as well, if you need any more information to give a better answer feel free to ask. I would also like answers more in the lower side of the budget to be safer)

    PC Upgrade Reccomendations

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 12:04 PM PST

    Hi all,

I have a PC that I've owned since 2014, it originally came prebuilt (since I was 10 and didn't know anything about computers) and I've been upgrading it with the little knowledge I know about computers.

I upgraded my fans since I didn't dust them for 6 years and they stopped working, so I bought new ones and cleaned the fans regularly ever since

I upgraded my graphics card to a GTX 1660 TI and my Power Supply to about a 800W Power supply. But that's about it.

A while ago I tried to play Phasmophobia on my new PC on VR. It's always taken a while to load, but this time it stopped responding completely and wouldn't function at all. This happens with some other games as well, and I have noticed my PC has been slowing down overtime as well. I cleaned my PC Yesterday which did kind of help with speed a little bit, but I'm more interested in the hardware aspects of computer building.

I come to you guys requesting your knowledge, what are the most important parts to a Gaming PC, and based off my description, what are the parts I should focus on upgrading to make my PC more fast and efficient? I'd love to hear your responses.

    Thanks!
