1440p mid-tier gaming build, criticism appreciated

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 04:38 AM PST

EDIT: Following advice, I have made some amendments. B450 changed to B550, 3200mhz -> 3600mhz and SSD changed. Original build link: [PCPartPicker Part List](https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/HxjVCz)

I'm hoping for 2-3 years of AAA titles at 1440p. Looking forward to cyberpunk. My only concerns are the potential CPU bottleneck (shouldn't be an issue at 1440p?). Any criticism and advice appreciated.

Liquid metal long term usage results

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 04:08 AM PST

On a whim I decided to use liquid metal to cool an i7 4810MQ for a Plex server. Made sure to coat any nearby components in clear nail polish.

That was 2 years ago. This week I noticed the fan is ramping up more and more and the temps starting to exceed 80c under load.

Took it apart and the liquid metal had completely crystalized. Heatsink is pretty much unsalvageable as it's not coming off the copper. The CPU die is pitted but will probably be fine.

Liquid metal brand was Conductonaut if that matters to anybody. To be clear i'm not saying LM is bad or good. Due to the finicky nature of applying the stuff I didn't use it on anything else so I don't have other PC's to compare it to.

Pics if anybody is interested. Taken after attempted cleaning and polishing CPU die. https://imgur.com/a/7LmMTuq

Curious if anybody else has had similar results or better luck? Wondering if it crystalized because it touched the non-copper part of the heatsink and reacted badly? Would also love some advice on how to remove the pitting on the die or if it's even worth it.

A GPU with no power connector?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 12:57 AM PST

So I am still new to the PC building game. Working on a second rig now for my SO. I bought this GPU. As I was installing it, I noticed there was no power connecter for it. Is this correct? I had assumed that a GPU such as this one needed its own power. Where does this draw its power from? Can someone explain this to me? Many thanks.

Upgraded my 6.5 year old gaming/homeoffice build, going for another 6+ year build

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 08:47 AM PST

    Hi all,

I decided to upgrade my rig from August 2014, which had been built to hit the sweet spot between price, performance and quality, for an above average gamer/homeoffice PC. The intention back then was to avoid any reinvests as long as possibe. Which I did succeed in I think. Up until last week, my old system (with one GPU upgrade through the years) allowed me approx. 50fps on average at almost max settings in Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1440p.

This post is intended to share what components I picked (based on sleepless nights) to have another 6+ year build for gaming and productivity. Maybe it helps others who are also mulling over components.

And I want to go back and see if I was right 6+ years down the road ;-)

    My old system:

    • Fractal R4 Define case
    • with a Xeon E3-1231 (4/8 cores / 3.4Ghz) CPU, Dark Rock Pro 3 cooler
    • Gigabyte Z97X-UDH Mainboard
    • 16GB RAM Crucial 1866Mhz DDR3 at CL10,
    • A MSI Geforce N770, later upgraded to a Palit 1070 GPU.
    • 1x Samsung Pro 850 512GB SSD + 1x Samsung 860 EVO 512GB SSD
    • While buying the 1070 I also bought a 600W BeQuiet Pure Power 10. Before that it was a 450W one.
    • Dell S2716DG 27" Monitor, Gsync 144Hz

My old system allowed me approx. 50fps on average at almost max settings in Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1440p

    My new system:

    • Fractal R4 Define case (still such a good case)
    • Ryzen 5600x (6/12 cores / 3.7Ghz) CPU, Dark Rock Pro 4 cooler
    • MSI MAG x570 Tomahawk Wifi Mainboard
    • 16GB RAM Patriot Viper 4000 Mhz DDR4 at CL19, running at 3800Mhz and CL16.
    • Nvidia RTX 3080 Founders Edition GPU.
    • 1x Samsung 980 Pro 1TB NVME
    • Fractal Ion+ 760W PSU.
    • Samsung G7 27" Monitor, 240Hz

My new system does 107fps on average, at 1440p, with DLSS enabled in Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

    My thoughts:

    Fractal R4 Define case

    • Still awesome, still fullfills all requirements of today
    • Fitted with 5! Arctic P14 PWM PST which cost ~30€ together, as a bundle. Makes my case run so silent and cool, that there is no difference between on/off at normal (non gaming) loads. For anyone interested how PST fans work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKi_7UVF3z0&ab_channel=ARCTIC. I recommend to not tie them to your CPU (both sensor or cabling wise). I recommend to leave them as a group of 5 and tie them to VRAM/MOS or System sensor temperatures.

    Ryzen 5600x (6/12 cores / 3.7Ghz)

    • Ryzen 5600x at 65TDP for me is much better than any other 90+TDP CPU, as it runs cooler, and therefore more silent.
    • 6 core vs. 8 core (new consoles): Games tend to use multiple cores, but still like to put a majority of the load on one core. The 5600x excels there. All other upgrades are, to me, not worth the price premium, as the GPU will remain the limitting factor for the foreseeable future.

MSI MAG x570 Tomahawk Wifi Mainboard

    • Went a bit overboard with this one, but mainly for the possible upgrades in the future.
    • Important was PCIE4.0 to run my GPU with that, and more importantly, enable running a PCIE4.0 NVME harddisk at full speed.
    • Ocing capabilities, when I want to fiddle (which I did) are also nice
    • Wifi 6ax is nice, because in the near future I will want to upgrade my router and this should enable better performance/speeds

    16GB RAM Patriot Viper 4000

    • Most everyone will tell you: For a 5600x get a fast 3600Mhz kit, with low CL. Because internally 3600Mhz is 1800Mhz and thats exactly the fabric speed for the Ryzen 5600x and they are in parity then. And they are right.
    • However there I did not do much research into brands/kits, since RAM tends to be the most negligible performance booster. I settled on a Patriot Viper 4000 16 GB kit. And got lucky. With my MSI mainboard I fiddled with it and got it to 3800Mhz, CL 16, at the same time boosting the fabric to 1900Mhz. For anyone interested, I used this one as guidance: https://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/patriot_viper_4_blackout_4000_16gb/2.htm
    • 16GB vs 32GB: Well right now, 16 GB of additional memory does not get me anything. Maybe with SAM or ResizeBar in the future, when Grapics Cards want to access RAM directly, this might become an upgrade position. But somehow I doubt DDR6X VRAM and DDR4 Mainboard Memory are meant for each other.

Nvidia RTX 3080 Founders Edition GPU and Samsung G7 27" Monitor

    • I just got lucky, I have to acknowledge that. Shoutout to PartAlert.
    • With the current pricings, that seem to continue into the midterm future, only the Founders Editions make sense. Everything else is overpriced.
    • With the 3080 I am set for 1440p gaming for the forseeable future. I hope my Samsung G7 serves me well during all that time (and no, I am not bothered by the curve and I work/game on it 7-8 hours a day).
    • I am not sure AMD will ever get its raytracing stuff together and get even close to NVidia, sorry AMD.

    Samsung 980 Pro 1TB NVME

    • The Samsung 980 Pro is 10x faster at 6600MB/s speed than my old Samsung 860 Evo SSD. And it is 3x faster than the Crucial 1P 1TB NVME, which is often recommended (which I do not get). But the Samsung requires PCIE4.0 to be that fast, that might be the difference to the Crucial.
    • Its a stick on the board, does not require space. I love it.

    Fractal Ion+ 760W PSU:

    • I am draining 477W at full GPU load from the wall, so my old BeQuiet 600W would still work perfectly, even with spikes. I could have saved that money.
    • The Fractal is a Tier A PSU (see https://linustechtips.com/topic/1116640-psucultists-psu-tier-list/) which can run fanless below 400W. At 400W it will then engage the fan. Awesome for my dead silent build. And kinda future proof, but was not needed.
    • 10 years warranty. I guess that one will even make it into my next upgrade in 6+ years.

I guess the next time I upgrade will be to a 4k build. But until then I think this should do nicely. What do you think?

PC randomly freezing with solid yellow DRAM light on motherboard

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 05:37 AM PST

I built my PC about 6 months ago, specs are as follows:

AMD Ryzen 9 3900X ROG Strix X570-F Gaming EVGA GeForce GTX 3080 Black 2x16gb Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB 3200 (CMW32GX4M2E3200C16) Corsair AX1200i PSU NZXT Kraken M22 cooler Samsung 860 EVO 1TB

The PC has been freezing whatever is on the screen randomly (everything is still getting power, all lights are still on and fans spinning) and the DRAM light is coming on. I have to turn off the PC from the power supply as I can't shut it down with the power button.

This issue started happening about a month or so ago, but it would resolve itself after a restart, but it has now become more consistent (happening a few times a day and sometimes won't post at all and go straight to the DRAM light).

RAM sticks are in A2 and B2. I have tried switching them to the other 2 slots which didn't help. Also tried booting with a single stick which worked for a bit but then froze again. Tried resetting all the BIOS settings to the default and updating the BIOS to the latest version all to no avail. Tried reseating the CPU and checking for bent pins too but all looked fine.

I can't see this exact RAM on the QVL for the MoBo. Not sure if this could be the cause as it was working fine for the first few months or if the RAM is slowly dying.

Any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated as I am at wits end here!

    Thanks in advance!

Protip: Buy a soft 2" paintbrush for random dusting.

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 01:28 AM PST

I see a lot of requests for maintenance and cleaning advice and thought I'd share that I keep a generic soft bristled 2" paint brush on/near my desk for sweeping mouse mat crumbs, keyboard krustys, and front panel filth from my setup. Warning, it is a bit satisfying, and I'd urge against using it inside of a running PC because of static. But, it will save you a bit on canned air for sure.

Bebby Machine - Gf wanted a cutesy "budget" gaming PC. I chose the budget

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 08:43 AM PST

Finally finished decking out what my gf has dubbed "Bebby Machine," originally intended (by her only) to be a budget gaming PC which has instead become a cutesy powerhouse ready to tackle 4k gaming without breaking a sweat. The only thing she requested was the Kraken AIO because she wanted to be able to put gifs on the cooler.

And let me tell you, Stardew Valley and Danganronpa look fantastic, lol.

This was my second (ish) build, as I did four separate builds (my rig, the Somnambulist, a friend's 5600x/6800 build, and my gf's sister's budget build) at the same time over the past few months.

    Pics

    Full build

    Highlights:

    AMD Ryzen 9 5900x

Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3080 Vision OC

    G.Skill Trident Z Royal 4 x 8gb 4000mhz CL15

NZXT Kraken Z73 360mm AIO (in push/pull config)

Twelve PWM fans - three bottom intake, six side intake, three top exhaust

The cheapest build to run The Long Dark with the highest resolution and smoothest performance

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 10:29 AM PST

    Hi people,

Games are painfully addicting and I'm trying to prioritise other things in life, but one game I can't live without anymore and that's The Long Dark. I have a mid 2012 iMac which manages to run it at 1024x768 but you know, I want to make the experience more immersive. I don't really want to spend more money than I need, though.

I saw the recommended requirements, but I wonder if those would allow me to get the fps I want (higher than 60 possibly). Can anyone reassure on me on that regard? What do "recommended requirements" usually refer to in a game? Is a GTX 555 really the only thing I need? Perhaps the game has been updated after a while and the requirements haven't been updated, stuff like that?

    Thanks to anyone who'll help!

RAM question (Crucial vs corsair vengence at specific settings )

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 04:32 AM PST

Hello guys , this is my last component choice and i really want to make the right choice , and i'm kinda being a bit lost because i don't know much about Rams.

Crucial Ballistix BL2K16G36C16U4R 3600 cl 16 (SINGLE RANK) vs corsair vengence 3600 cl 18 (DUAL RANK). IF i want to overclock it , which one is better to pick ? From what i have heard this crucial does not overclock well ... also someone said to me that they are Single channel ? could someone verrify please?

ps: Crucial's are at 171€ rn whereas Corsair Vengence 200€

    Specs :

    CPU : Ryzen 9 5900X / mobo : msi mag tomahawk X570

    Crucial link : https://www.amazon.es/gp/product/B083TRXZ9N/ref=ox_sc_act_image_2?smid=A1AT7YVPFBWXBL&psc=1

Also please don't ask me why 32GB.... i have my reasons :) not only for gaming but i want the best gaming performances :) thanks !!

Did I just short circuit my PC I built or something?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 05:18 AM PST

So basically for the specs that I think are important, I have a:
BitFenix Whisper M 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply
Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI) ATX AM4 Motherboard
Fractal Design Meshify C ATX Mid Tower Case

You can check the rest of the specs here: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/fkXd6R

Anyway, so what happened was I built this PC about a year ago and everything's been just fine and dandy. The only real issue I have with this PC is that the case's front USB headers are so janky and stiff and plugging things in is very hard. I have a really tiny USB charging cable that I had plugged in to a portable charger, basically just a battery you charge it looks like. It was off of course, but maybe some power was still in there or something? Anyway, I took out the tiny USB charging cable and tried to plug it into the second/right USB header. USB headers are quite finicky so I did it the wrong way, like a lot of people do. But somehow, that just shut off my entire computer. I was freaked out for a second but turned my computer back on just now and everything seems fine. I suppose having high quality PSU's and MOBO's really do pay off? But what happened if anyone knows? I instead plugged it in my first/left USB header since I find it's easier to plug in, and it works fine, charging as it should.

Is it possible to get a 'bang for your buck' value out of a physically smaller PC build?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 10:44 AM PST

This is my first and current build (below), from around 2014.

    • I want a new build that emphasizes portability and minimalism. I might be moving overseas to a small ass studio apartment, and a physically smaller, minimalist build will make things significantly easier.

    • I want to upgrade my CPU from the 4460 to the Ryzen 5600X. If I upgrade the CPU, I know I also need to upgrade the motherboard and RAM. By doing this, it's possible I might even have to upgrade the power supply.

    • Outside of LAN and maybe external storage, I'd like to use as many wireless peripherals as possible, such as the mouse/keyboard, Xbox controller, etc. Would a Bluetooth 5 motherboard be advised?

    • Once again, portable, minimalist, and clean. This gives me the most peace of mind when moving back and forth between countries. Is this type of build feasible? Can I still get something of good value, or would it be way more expensive than its regular-sized counterpart?

Is my RAM compatible with my motherboard/CPU (similar product in QVI but not identical)?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 07:13 AM PST

I have a ROG Strix X570-E Gaming motherboard and Ryzen 9 5900x CPU. I am trying to tell if some RAM I have will work with this combination, so I pulled up the memory QVI for this combination via the ASUS site (https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/SocketAM4/ROG_STRIX_X570-E_GAMING/Memory_QVL_for_AMD_Ryzen_5000_Series_Processors_X570.pdf). According to pcpartpicker (https://pcpartpicker.com/product/dHjJ7P/gskill-trident-z-rgb-32gb-2-x-16gb-ddr4-3200-memory-f4-3200c16d-32gtzrx) the part number is F4-3200C16D-32GTZRX. The QVI does not contain that exact part number but does include the part number F4-3200C16D-32GTZA. Is the QVI comprehensive and this RAM won't work or should it work?

Go safe with 1080p or risk 1440p?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 09:51 AM PST

    Hey, guys

So, I´m finishing my first PC build. I have almost everything setup, with a Ryzen 5 3600 and a GTX 1660 Super 6gb. The only problem is conerning which monitor to buy. I know that this setup can handle 1080p with ease; however, I´ve been advised not to use it with 1440p monitors. The problem is that my standards are considerably lower than most: I´m ok running a AAA game with mid (high?) settings at 40 FPS. Besides, I would like to have room for an upgrade if I ever get the buck to do it.

As upgrades on the current setup are not in question, because of the prices in my country, I would like to know your opinion in the matter. Should I go safe or risk it? And, if I choose 1440p, there´s any chance that´ll be absolutely unable to play AAA games 2 or 3 years from now?

How many fans should I get for this build?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 08:09 AM PST

I just bought a PC and I'm kinda worried if I didn't invested too much in cooling.

    Here's the setup:

    -Ryzen 5 5600x with a DeepCool Gammaxx 400 V2

Can't get RAM to run at advertised speed (everything I've tried so far in post)

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 10:31 AM PST

I can't get my RAM to run at 3200MHz as advertised on the box. It runs fine and everything seems to be stable if I just plug it in and boot up without enabling XMP, but as soon as I turn on DOCP (asus MB) it immediately becomes unstable. Sometimes it will actually boot and run for a few minutes, but then crashes, sometimes it won't even POST and the orange DRAM warning light on the MB lights up and I have to turn off the system and turn off the PSU to get it to reboot. As a result of some of the crashing and failed boots I've had to repair windows to get it to run again.

I've tried enabling the Auto DOCP profile and just use the presets and I've also tried to input all the voltage and timings manually. I've also just changed the speed rating and tried to let the system determine the timings and voltage automatically. When I've tried to change timings manually I used the timings from the label on the side of the DRAM stick.

I also tried to use Thaiphoon Burner and DRAM calculator to give me timings, but Burner indicates Nanya is the RAM maker (not sure if this is a bad thing or not in terms of quality) and DRAM calculator doesn't have Nanya listed to select to get timings. I've never ventured into overclocking before and I just want the factory overclock advertised speed so I'm not looking to go crazy.

I do have the sticks in slots A2 and B2.

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. Do I have crap RAM sticks? Am I just doing something wrong? Does my BIOS need to be updated? (Never done that so makes me a tad nervous).

    System I'm working with

    AMD Ryzen 7 2700x

ASUS ROG Strix B450-F Gaming (BIOS version 2605 according to Speccy)

    Corsair Vengeance DDR4 2x16 3200MHz (CMK32GX4M2B3200C16)

    ATI Radeon RX580

OS drive is a 1TB Sabrent Rocket

    Windows 10

    Questions over first PC build

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 01:08 PM PST

    Hello,

I'm looking to make the jump from console into PC gaming. I went into PC Part Picker to assemble what I think is a good rig, but honestly I have no clue still as I'm learning the ins and outs of everything. I primarily play FPS games like Doom Eternal and Halo on console and am very interested in playing some of the Doom Eternal mods out there, but I'm also interested in playing some VR games if this rig would allow it. I've got a Quest 2 and ideally I'd really like to play Half-Life: Alyx and Star Wars squadrons but VR would be a nice to have and not a necessity. I'd also like to see if this PC could keep up with newer games as they'd come out since I have Game Pass ultimate and can access a fair amount of Xbox games on PC through this. By this, I mean I'm looking for something that wouldn't be outdated within the next few months or anything. Obviously upgrades can happen, but I'd like something to remain somewhat modern for the foreseeable future.

I was wondering if there was someone kind enough to provide some constructive criticism on if this would be a semi-decent first PC. My budget cap is right around $1500 and this one just slightly exceeds that mark.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read!

    In case screen

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 12:57 PM PST

What are those screens that go inside the case called? And how are they mounted? I have seen one in an O11 before and liked the idea of displaying temps+stats.

Enabling XMP leaves PC failing to post

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 12:44 PM PST

    Hi Guys,

New builder here, just built my first PC, the specs in relation to this query are as follows:

    PSU: 750W
    RAM: Corsair Vengeance 3200mhz (16GB x2)
    CPU: i7 10700k
    GPU: RTX 3070
Mobo: ASUS RoG Strix Z490-F Gaming

I am trying to enable XMP as by default, my ram is running at 2133mhz and I'd like to get the full 3200mhz (or at least 3000mhz) out of the kit. But when I go to the bios and enable XMP (there are two profiles there by default, "XMP I" and "XMP II". Both leave my machine not booting. Im not familiar with XMP, and have actually never had any issue like this before. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you in advance....

How important is a high refresh rate in gaming?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 08:34 AM PST

I have an Acer XR382CQK. It's 37.5", 3840x1600 resolution, with a max refresh rate of 75Hz. The monitor is relatively new, so I'm not looking to replace it anytime soon. It's big (I have awful eyesight), serves me well for work, and certainly not the bottleneck in my current build. My computer is almost 10 years old now, so my experience with refresh rates is basically being happy that it doesn't drop to 10fps whenever it's snowing in Skyrim.

Now that I'm finally upgrading my computer, I can actually consider playing newer video games. And this is no small upgrade, either - Ryzen 9 5950X, 32GB 3600Hz RAM, RTX 3090. My monitor will absolutely be the bottleneck in this build, but my question is: does it matter?

I can understand people who buy 144Hz, even 240Hz monitors to play online shooter games, where every millisecond matters. But the kinds of games I like are mostly single-player RPGs: The Witcher, Cyberpunk 2077, the next Elder Scrolls Game if that ever comes out. I'm confident these games will make full use of my high end build to create hyperrealistic environments with ray tracing at my monitor's native resolution, and at a steady frame rate that doesn't look like security camera footage. But do I really need that steady frame rate to be faster than 75Hz?
