    Simple Questions - November 14, 2020

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 04:09 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Do NOT Assume Component Compatability As I did

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 01:31 PM PST

I just have to vent after this disappointing experience I just had. Hopefully some of you find amusment from this and learn from my mistake.

I was planning on assembling my first desktop today. I've done my research and picked out the Ryzen 5 5600x and the ASUS Tuf Gaming x570 MOBO. I was aware that my MOBO would need a system update to work with the latest AMD CPUs but I thought that it wouldn't be an issue. I'll just use a USB to update the bios... oh wait, this MOBO does not support USB bios flashback. I missinterprepted the manual and though ASUS ez flash 3 was the same as flashback. I was wrong. Ooof.

No worries I thought. I'll just buy a cheap AMD AM4 socket CPU to perform this update. After getting the $60 AMD Athlon 3000G from amazon I thought I was golden. It even has graphics so I wouldn't need to plug in my GPU to update. So far all seemed perfect.

Then the big day came. I opened up all the components that have been sitting in the corner of my room for weeks. The ram slotted perfectly. The PSU and its cables clicked together with ease. The Athlon CPU sat neatly in its socket with a heatsink ontop. I shorted the power switch jumpers and suddently... nothing happened. The fan was active and there was a red led signifying that the CPU didn't boot right.

It turns out that even though the Athelon 3000G is an AM4 CPU which has been out for ages, my x570 MOBO doesn't support it. Appearently little to no x570 MOBOs support CPUs before Ryzen 1st gen. I even called around to computer repair shops on my university campus but no dice. No one offers MOBO bios updates as a service.

Welp, at this point my build day is ruined. I'll try hunting around for compatable CPUs tomorrow but for now my build is stalled.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

    • I'm planning on buying the parts gradually throughout the month as Black Friday and Cyber Monday approach.
    • I don't know much at all about overclocking, so I probably won't be doing so for any parts. That being said, I might be open to the idea down the line.
    • I'd like to have both connectivity options (ethernet and Wi-Fi) available, so I went with a hopefully suitable motherboard.
    • I don't have any strong preferences on RGB, as long as it doesn't get too crazy.
    • Many thanks to my amazing girlfriend and some great Redditors for helping me put this together! And of course, thanks for your time.

Edit: Just wanted to add that this will be my very first build and gaming PC!

Newegg Forcing Crap Bundles on RTX 3000 Series Cards

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 05:17 AM PST

Anyone else think the Newegg bundles are BS. I know it could be argued that it helps prevent scalping, but bundle with decent components that people will actually use. It's always some OLOy RAM, a motherboard that nobody wants or needs or some weird PSU MFG that nobody buys or ever heard of. Then they can take a 15 - 30% (restocking fee) if you return the donkey parts and you have to pay return shipping. Is this just a way for them to scalp on the 30 series card? They get to keep 15-30% for the crap you don't want or they get to unload the crab that nobody buys!!! Put together some real bundles Newegg!!!

Friend wants to play and stream cyberpunk at 1080p60fps- this build enough?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 11:02 AM PST

He already has an existing 500W power supply, would this build be enough to stream cyberpunk at a reasonable 1080p 60fps? Any suggestions/swap outs/? Not really trying to push this any farther price wise.

What can you put inside a pc?

Just bought this ryzen 5900x / rtx 3080 build for $2,103 before tax. How's it look? Good spec/component choice for the price? Any glaring issues?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 03:09 PM PST

It has been ages since I've had to build a PC. My primary use will be for video editing and the occasional game. I have a 140hz LG 1440p IPS monitor.

Price was $2,103 before tax. 2,318 with tax, but I'll be able to claim that back.

Bearing in mind, I'm clueless, and this is a pre-built. Any thoughts? I intend to upgrade the ram to 32GB as it's cheaper to do so on my own.

    Here's what I went for:

Should I build a new PC or try to upgrade my existing?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 02:43 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

I hope all of you are doing well!

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Context (feel free to skip ahead)

Like probably most people here, I love playing video games. I also do some streaming on Twitch and enjoy Star Citizen a lot. You might know where this is going.

Especially when playing Star Citizen, my current system is struggling - even on 1920x1080 - I know that the game is not optimized yet, but I've also been saving some money to potentially build a new computer.

I've also heard that a lot of people have a separate computer for streaming. I don't necessarily need/want a second computer for that unless that's my main mistake here.

I mostly play on FullHD (1920x1080), because I don't want my computer to have to downscale from 4k to 1920x1080, which is quite a high resolution anyways for the PC to handle, but combined with streaming I seem to have some performance issues.

    Current set up

My current set up is from January 2017, where I got a a Cyberpower Vapor

    • CPU: Intel i7 7700K 4.20 Ghz
    • Mainboard: ASRock Z170M ITX/AC MITX
    • RAM: 2x 16GB Corsair DDR4-3000
    • GPU: EVGA 3.0 GTX 1070 8GB
    • Power supply:; Silverstone ST45SF-G 450 W power supply
    • Case: Cyberpower Vapor
    • Main storage: 512 GB Sandisk X400 SSD
    • Secondary storage: 1 TB hard drive (for large files that don't need to be accessed fast)

I have a 4k monitor by DELL (U2718Q), which I use for my work computer and then switch over to my gaming pc whenever I get to play ;)

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I would love to play at Full HD but more fluently. In Star Citizen I'm getting around 15-30 frames depending on the location. I play the game on high settings and would like to keep it like that but with 30-60 frames.

A dream would be to increase the resolution, but I think combined with streaming and the unoptimized Star Citizen that's asking for too much.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    Up to $2800 USD

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

    -------

    A) Should I upgrade components?

I didn't do myself a favor, by getting a fairly small Cyberpower Vapor computer. It is very convenient as it doesn't need much space, but it doesn't offer much space for upgrading.

However, it looks like the cheapest variation here (and please correct me) is to upgrade the graphics card and the power supply - if they fit in the existing space. I think the power supply would need to be upgraded because many of the newer cards seem to draw a lot more power. I think the CPU is doing ok so far and I think the RAM is pretty good as well.

The small space of the case makes it somehow difficult to predict what would fit in there, but as long as the GPU would have the same dimensions it should be possible. One concern might be heat, as a new GPU might dissipate more?

    B) Or should I build a new computer?

I've built computers in the past - granted always with advice from my friends - and am thinking if I should just - sell or give my current computer to a friend - and build a new one from scratch?

Draft of your potential build here

I was going to avoid water cooling, since I don't mind fans and it seems like either way works.

Here's a work in progress draft on newegg.

    Question

I was hoping to get your advice/input on what I should do. I understand that probably both routes are feasible (depending on how much money I want to spend).

The build I put together probably also has some rookie mistakes with the components I selected, since I don't do this very often.

Thanks for your time and I hope you have an awesome weekend

How to reduce dust for a pc on carpet

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 12:14 PM PST

I keep my desktop on the carpet, and I've noticed no cases seem to have large enough feet to significantly lift it off the ground. Are there aftermarket feet or some surface I could put below my case to keep it from sucking in all the carpet dust? I'd like to add a bottom intake, but currently its too close to the carpet.

This is a odd question I know but how did Realtek make so many deals with all these companies to get their drivers or chips inside of their device? I know in terms of audio their has to be so many more companies but so many just stick with realtek what's up with that?

Can you feel framerate drops at higher refresh rates?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 02:22 PM PST

I have decided to ditch 1080p 60fps gaming and I'm upgrading my old 1070 and 7th gen CPU.

The main reason why I have stuck with 60hz for so long is because I like having a solid framerate locked to 60fps. When it dips to 55, it doesn't feel good and it is certainly noticeable.

This brings me to the question. Are you able to clearly feel and see a drop in framerate on a higher refresh rate monitor if it does not go below 60fps? Does it detract from the experience as much as dipping below 60fps would?

Just like how going from 60fps to 55fps feels like crap, I don't know how dropping from 144fps to 130 would feel, or even dropping from 144 to 60. I've never experienced high refresh rate gaming before.

    Would it be bad to pair a 10th gen i3 with a 2080 ?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 12:49 PM PST

I've been looking at alot of benchmarks, and am considering what the best bang for the buck build i can make. Currently looking between 10100 and 10400 and it seems like you only lose about 9% frames between the two an save 60 bucks when getting an i3. Would it be a bad idea to pair an i3 with a 2080 tier gpu (id likely go for a 3060 which should be near 2080 performance) ?

Something worth noting if you have parts with limited comparability. Zorin OS worked for me.

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 03:32 PM PST

I've been struggling for months now to build my little ghetto build. It's a laptop I took apart, and housed in a new case. Every part works fine, but laptop itself came with switchable graphics, and if anyone knows anything about that, the older the system gets, the less compatible they do. Like at all. This system shipped with windows 7 (HP OEM) but couldn't even access the windows update server it was so old.

I installed windows 8 and attempted to update the graphics drivers: BOOTLOOP

    I installed windows 10: BOOTLOOP

POP OS: allowed me to get the system up and running, and recognized that there was an AMD gpu on top of the intel hd graphics, but it wouldn't let me use or update it. I'm not particularly skilled in linux, but I've done one or two builds and nothing worked I've tried before. The intel graphics are so old they're described as "Intel® HD Graphics for Previous Generation Intel® Processors" on the Ark website.

Then I tried Zorin OS. Aside from everything else, I was only concerned with the graphics. Not only does Zorin OS recognize it, it's already fully updated. I can choose which gpu I use to open applications with a right click on it, which is much more practical then setting up a list for applications and which gpu to use. It also doesn't flicker my screen for 3 seconds like its having a seizure. Compatibility seems really good, and I can play CSGO and Dolphin emulator at 30+ fps locked on a 5650M and i5-460m.

All this to say, I didnt particularly like the "windowsesque" theme they were going for with Zorin, but it worked for my use case when nothing else did.

Thank you for coming to my ted talk

Best CPU cooler for Ryzen 3600?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 12:38 PM PST

Got my first PC up and running this weekend and noticed my CPU sometimes hitting 90 degree temps so want to upgrade the stock cpu cooler that comes with the 3600. What's best option for £60 or less price range?

I've got B450m Mortar Max motherboard and a 3070 MSI 2X OC GTX if that helps.

Only one I've looked at so far is this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07ZJJ55P6/?coliid=I1BBISHQ8JRTG9&colid=29FMAA1UL919F&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it&th=1

Anyone got any good recommendations? If it comes in white that would be ideal as my case is that colour so want to try keep the theme :)

Advice on upgrades or a new build? (Total budget ~2,000 USD)

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 02:45 PM PST

    Hi all,

I had my first foray into PC building back in 2016. I think it's about time for me to upgrade, mostly in preparation for wanting to play at least 1440p when Cyberpunk comes out. I largely use my desktop for gaming or as a workstation (Python/Excel/Illustrator).

    Here is my current setup:

    • CPU: Intel i5 6500 (no OC)
    • GPU: Zotac Nvidia 1060 Mini
    • Mobo: Gigabyte GA-H110M (LGA 1151)
    • RAM: 16 GB DDR4 (Kingston Fury)
    • 2 harddrives: 1 Samsung Evo SSD (512 GB), 1 Seagate HD (1 TB)
    • Power: EVGA 650 GS
    • Tower: NZXT S340 Elite ATX
    • Monitor: HP 25es (can only handle 1080p)

I haven't looked at parts in ages so I have no idea what is worth it right now. I'm currently thinking either a Zen3 CPU or a 9/10th gen Intel (10700k or 9600k) paired with a 3070. Any advice appreciated on additional parts I need to upgrade. Thanks!

    Motherboard options

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 02:38 PM PST

Im getting totally lost in the weeds with this upgrade i want to go through.

Whenever stock allows im going to purchase the ryzen 5 5600x. Where im getting lost is that it seems the AM4 slot has existed for a long time and there are too many mobo options.

If money was no issue for you, what top of the line motherboard would you pair with a R5 5600x? What would you use as a solid budget option? What chipset is the newest, 550? Im totally lost and I just need some direction.

    Thanks for the consideration

Pc will boot to windows but not to bios?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 12:33 PM PST

    Little bit of a background

I built a new pc about a month ago and I'm looking to sell my old one. As I'm prepping it to be sold, I'm installing a new m.2 ssd. After installing the new m.2 ssd (WD SN550) I couldn't boot to bios. So I tried taking the m.2 from my newer build which had windows installed and the result was that it booted to windows but I couldn't get into the bios... I tried clearing the cmos by shorting the CLRCMOS pins on the motherboard which resulted in the same thing, boot to windows while not being able to get into the bios. I'm at the point where I've taking out the CMOS battery as I'm not to sure shorting the CLRCMOS pins with a screwdriver worked. The computer worked perfectly fine a month or so ago where I was able to get into the bios.

I was under the impression, I didn't have to do anything before installing a new m.2 so I just installed the sn550. I could be wrong with this assumption so please tell me if this wasn't correct.

I'm assuming the motherboard is now faulty but I'm not entirely sure. Please let me know what you think I can do from this point.

    Specs -

Please help with my first budget build.

I'm 15 and trying to build myself a pc for the first time, I don't know what is good and what isn't so pls help me out. I've put together some parts, but I'm looking to maybe make it a bit cheaper. I live in South Africa so everything here is more expensive because of import taxes and stuff. This is what I have: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/LHpz68

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I'm not getting any input on my monitor. Monitor says "no signal".

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

Replugged all cables. Tryed every stick of ram in both slots.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Also noticed that i cant turn off computer with a long press on the power button on the case. If i turn off the computer with the switch on the PSU and turn it on again within ±3 seconds the fans start spinning again. Reset button also seems to do nothing.

I have plugged the HDMI cable in both the GPU and the mobo.

If i'm correct you cant plug any cable into the GPU.

I'm sure the monitor works since its one from myself.

This is a budget gaming pc i build for a friend, got all the parts for around €400.

EDIT: giving my cpu a power cable helps it allot it seems like! Thank you buildapc community once again!
