This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

I don't need a gaming PC, but I want to build one so my BF can happily enjoy his favourite hobby at my place. Please help!

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 08:59 PM PDT

I know very little about computers but I want to try and do this because I know it would mean a lot to my boyfriend. I've heard him mention words like "144 fps, 1440P", and "Doom Eternal". I may splurge on the graphics card coming out in October (3070) but I am not sure if it is necessary. I also heard him talk about new processors coming out soon? Thoughts? I am just not sure what a solid option would be. My price range is pretty wide because I want him to really like it (and I don't know what that costs)! I know his own computer is really old so he would be grateful for anything new but I want it to be a pc dream for him.

After many hours looking at this page, YouTube videos, and general google searches I have put together the list below. Any guidance would be appreciated. Also please let me know if I am missing a part.

One request: he likes keyboards with "big" keys but I dislike the clickety clack of it all. Any way to get a quiet version or am I dreaming too big?

    Thank you again!

Please do not approach PC Building emotionally

    Posted: 19 Sep 2020 07:50 AM PDT

I have a friend who wanted to build a PC, naturally I was extremely happy that he went to the right guy instead of going for a prebuilt, spent 2 days making up the parts and getting asked question, made sure all my answers were correct otherwise I'd google the question for him, it was a good pc for and for an excellent price, now he said to me " I really wanna go check the PC builds in local stores" Now being in the Middle East, 99% of all PC people and PC stores and technologically illiterate, over charging more than 50% - 200% on all of the parts than if I were to buy it from amazon.

I Told him "No it's a waste of time I've already checked every single store and every single website I can find as I was searching for a PSU locally and online" and found that all of the places are overcharging, told him in the beginning I was searching for a PC locally, and I went for it as I didn't have much knowledge, but now I see it was a bad idea spending 1100 usd on a 960 with an i7 4790 in 2017..

He came to me today saying he visited a lot of the PC stores and that he found a PC with an i9 9900k and a 2060 super, I was shocked anyone would pair this CPU with a mid range GPU so I immediately told him to tell me the price, he said 3300 USD for the entire setup, I asked him about the peripherals, he said it came with a Razer ORNATA Bs "Mecha-membrane" crap, I can obviously say that since I owned that garbage for 4 years and I never laid hands on it after getting Gateron browns , and the CoolerMaster mm711 which is a good mouse and he liked it, the price was really good which is rare in Saudi Arabia but it's still slightly more expensive than newegg, and the monitor is a 240hz Curved, I told him the curved thing is just a gimmick and he should never buy a 27 inch 1080p for pixel density.

Now here's where it gets spicy, my man said he felt really really comfortable with that setup even though It's like double what it should cost, I said I can get him a much much better PC that performs much better than this one and I'll add the peripherals that he liked even though I don't think anyone should buy the Ornata but it's personal preference and I respect his, I told him I can get him a 5700 and a 3700x, he said "Bro I already told you I'm super comfortable with that setup" I told him I understand that but the PC specs are PC specs regardless of your preference, more FPS = better, less render time = better, and your opinion doesn't change it nor should it matter and obviously with peripherals it's all personal so I didn't mind.

He told me "Man you're such an idiot you don't understand people have personal preferences, I already told you I like that setup and so I am gonna buy it" I told him you're over paying for something I can get for half that price and just as good if not better, and personal preference only goes for the peripherals and some times the monitor and some times motherboards, he then continued to rant saying "Bro you're wasting your time on me I like that setup so I'll buy it I like the specs" mind you he is a beginner and doesn't have enough knowledge to make a sound PC purchase, "You need to stop pretending you're right and just accept that I like this and I'll get it, how did the salesman say it's really really good like 200 times if it's not good, and also he the salesman said it's limited edition so it HAS to be good" he added.

I was just shocked at all of the things he said and I explained that limited edition is mostly just marketing and is an excuse to raise the price, and that the PC is not personal preference, the FPS is not personal preference it's a fact, and I called him out for calling me an idiot and I told him that his logic is flawed because he just bought into the marketing that people do and I explained to him that salesmen are the to make sales so ofc he's not gonna say anything bad about the thing he wants to sell....

He is being so emotional I mean it really sounds like a break up text, rather than him being logical and buying a more powerful PC for 1200$ less, he is calling me an idiot for wanting him to spend less, he kept calling me an idiot even after I proved to him that he's being emotional by making the same exact setup on newegg for 2000 usd, and I can make a much better PC for 1500, and he still insisted he wants to buy from the store which mind you I have been to it and I have bought cases from them and frankly that's the only good thing about them, they have the best prices in Saudi Arabia, but still terrible prices coming from amazon and newegg.

Please please beginners, don't be too emotional and illogical, don't be afraid to ask any questions even if they sound stupid, we all started from there and without these stupid questions we wouldn't be building custom liquid cooled 10000$ systems, never be arrogant because you'll never learn and develop bad habits that'd go beyond PCs, I proved to him that his logic is flawed, please if you see that I have made a mistake please call it out, call anyone even more knowledgeable if you have facts and proof to back up your claim, but if you don't have proof then don't be arrogant and insist you're right or you'll never learn, my close friend is buying a 2000 setup for 3300, please learn from his mistake.

    God bless.

15 year old son wants parts to build his own gaming PC for Christmas, and I need advice on whether the list he provided me will build a good PC. He compiled it after talking to a few friends who have gaming PCs and watching some YouTube videos.

    Posted: 19 Sep 2020 07:45 AM PDT

My son has only previously played on consoles. We have XBox Ones and PS4s and we don't even own any PCs, only iMacs. His one friend built his own PC, I think, but the other has an Alienware from Dell, but he thinks that they will be able to help him build his own with the help of more YouTube videos.

I'm keeping an open mind about it, but I would prefer to have advice from people who know what they are doing before I shell out $1300 on parts for just the PC.

Is this list any good? Any suggestions on how to make it better, or are some of these parts not needed? What are the best places to buy these parts, and are they the types of things that go on sale closer to Christmas? Thanks for any help you can provide.

I went back to the cave... with an even BIGGER box of scraps!

    Posted: 19 Sep 2020 12:48 PM PDT

    https://i.imgur.com/pVyQiRj.jpeg

As I was putting together my last silly scrap build for a nephew (the 8350+rx480 in a haf 912 case in the background of that pic - I'm giving it to a nephew in a couple days for his birthday), I realized that my cave full of forgotten computer parts (the closet in my office) might actually have the fixings to put together ONE more machine... for free...

Since I've actually been enjoying having a semi-decent gaming rig in my office (I've gotten in some overwatch and dota and had some relatively light-duty fun with it over the past few days), I figured there's no time like the present!

Here's what I came up with:

    https://i.imgur.com/4DWuLrB.jpeg

What's in the ridiculously large box of scrap?

The case is an old and silly-big HAF 922 I had laying around from an ancient build of mine. It's a beast of a case, complete with two gigantic 200mm case fans pulling air silently through the box. I pulled it out of the closet (with much difficulty - this thing is an anchor) and was happy to see it still had my old turbo-cool 1000 SLI power supply in it!

That old PSU was a beast. It cost a FORTUNE when it was new. I think I paid more than $400 for that thing. It was built to do quad-card SLI, and indeed, I ran a nice SLI rig with it. There's only one problem with the turbo-cool. I remembered WHY I shoved this box into the closet so many years ago.

Long story short? That Turbo-Cool PSU is about as loud as a harrier jump-jet taking off. At some point, I decided I wanted a smaller/quieter main rig, and this screaming beast got put to pasture. It was time to fix that little problem.

Using extreme care (don't mess with the innards of a PSU - it can kill or maim), I yanked the half-broken tiny little screaming fan out of the PSU. Taking the lid off the case (again, CAREFULLY), I bored a nice big circle in it, strapped on some mesh, and tossed a big fan on top to cool it down. In one fell swoop, I silenced the beast AND increased the cooling air-flow.

Of course, I felt silly when I went online and realized people are still buying these things used on EBAY for upwards of $100. Maybe I should have sold the turbo-cool instead :).

Anyway, hind-sight is 2020. Now I needed some actual parts. Of the bits and pieces in the closet, I knew exactly what I was looking for. Somewhere in a box of forgotten dreams, I had a 1090t.

If you don't know the 1090t, it was a 6 core Phenom - the pinnacle of the old AMD phenom era. It was an overclocking monster of its day, and it stood pretty tall against the piledriver and even bulldozer chips that came years after its release.

After checking out the couple of old AMD motherboards I still have laying around, I decided to go with the ASUS Crossfire Extreme IV. I slotted the 1090t, thermal pasted it up, strapped a big giant aftermarket cooler I had laying around (I have no idea who made this ridiculously large thing), and started to deal with some basic cable management.

Sadly, I only had one stick of 8gb 1600 speed ddr3 laying around, so I'm doing single channel ram until I find another stick, but that shouldn't hold it back too much.

I finished it off with a 2tb hard drive and an old 120gb SSD to use as the boot drive.

After getting it all put together, I fired it up... and was immediately hit with the awful sound of a blow-dryer trying to die.

Sure that all of my main fans were almost dead-silent, I stared at the machine trying to figure out wtf was making noise. Here's the culprit:

    https://i.imgur.com/NA333cS.jpeg

Yup, this motherboard has a tiny little fan SCREAMING BLOODY MURDER under a heatsink on the motherboard itself.

No big deal. I yanked its tiny plug. There's plenty of airflow in the case to passively cool the board.

I was greeted with BLISSFUL SILENCE.

Now I needed a video card, but that wasnt a problem. I still had a 780ti laying around from a past rig. I tested it out and sure enough, she was throttling. Yanking the card, I opened her up to give her new thermal paste and now she's running nice and cool :).

The final step was some light overclocking. 3.2ghz was never going to work - it would choke that poor 780ti. I needed something a bit faster.

    https://i.imgur.com/mdYMyUI.jpeg

4ghz was more my speed :). Like I said, that old 1090t was a beast.

I could have kicked the gpu up as well, but the 780ti is already bottlenecking on the 1090t, so there's no real benefit to do so at 1080p.

Finally, I needed a monitor. Since I'm giving the 120hz flatiron to my nephew, that left me with an old gaming ASUS ve247h. That was a fantastic 60hz monitor in its day - 2ms, 1920x1080, 23.6". Given that this machine was running a processor that was literally released a decade ago (back in good old 2010), it was probably a good thing to stick with trying to push 60fps.

As for peripherals, I grabbed an old crappy logitech keyboard off my shelf, I found a nice-shape g930 headset that I'd stopped using when its charge cable broke (I just wired it up with a long usb cable), and a g502 mouse with a fraying braided cable that I'd tossed in a box and forgotten about (I cut the braids off the cable and it feels lighter and amazing - I might have to cut the braids off my gaming rig g502 downstairs too).

    What was the end result?

This damn machine in all its silly old-ness out-scored the 8350+rx480 build on the heaven benchmark (1080p extreme). I cracked open overwatch and it was pushing 150-200 fps consistently depending on the map even on high settings, and can easily push 100+ on ultra at 1080p... so it's perfect and rock-solid locked in at the display-based refresh rate (70fps), and by letting it sit at that lower-power level, I'm getting low temps and quiet fans.

In most actual games, the 8350+rx480 outperforms it (slightly), but I was genuinely surprised by how close I was getting with this old phenom.

I tried a few more games (gtaV, witcher3, dota, jedi) and everything ran beautifully. I had to fiddle with a few settings here and there (sorry Geralt, no fancy-hair for you), but getting 60+ solid frames per second even with graphics cranked up into the beautiful end of the spectrum on recent titles was no issue at all!

So there you have it. One reasonably powerful, surprisingly capable, and hilariously outdated gaming rig for my writing office built out of ancient scrap from my closet... and it didn't cost me one red cent.

Best CPU + Motherboard Combo for >$300

    Posted: 19 Sep 2020 11:49 AM PDT

My motherboard took a dump and I think I might buy a new mobo and upgrade my CPU. What is the best combo for sub $300? I currently have a 1060, so it doesn't need to be super strong, but I might want to upgrade the GPU down the road.

Meshify C and RTX 3080 Tight Fit

    Posted: 19 Sep 2020 09:22 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I am just about ready to pull the trigger on my first PC build. I don't have a 3080 yet, but I'm watching for some to become available (whenever that will be!). I plan on getting the Meshify C case and a front-mounted AIO. My measurements have come out to be ~2.5mm between the 3080 and the AIO with fans. With it this close to the AIO, does this present any problems like with cooling or anything like that?

    3080 build

    Posted: 19 Sep 2020 11:50 AM PDT

I was able to get a 3080 through an extremely generous friend and now I need to build a PC around it.

    Few quick points:

    1. I will need Wi-Fi 6 in my mobo because my house is not wired for ethernet

    2. Would like to keep the cost of parts (3080 and monitors not included) between $600 and $900

    3. Main question is if you guys think the case will provide good enough airflow

    4. Second question is, is there a dual monitor setup I can get in the $400 and under range that can take full advantage of the 3080? Mainly worried about resolution and color accuracy more than refresh rate. Though 144Hz monitor would be nice.

That's pretty much it other than I am more than open to any suggestions on any upgrades I should make. Or any downgrades I can make to save some money. Lastly, I am probably not looking to overclock anything in order to maximize lifespan and minimize heat.

Is the AMD Ryzen 4000 CPU expected to get the same scalper treatment as the GTX 3080?

I'm looking to build myself a pc and was advised to wait for the launch of the Ryzen 4000 since it's about a month away only, but then the GTX 3080 episode happenned. I'm wondering if this CPU will get out of stock the second it's launched or it will be possible to get our hands on it with no problems?

    Cardboard PC

    Posted: 19 Sep 2020 10:07 AM PDT

Just finished a cardboard pc! Roomate gave me an old pc and I upgraded most of the parts, including the motherboard. Turns out, the new board didn't fit in the old case, but everything else worked fine. So we decided to go the inpatient route and cannibalize the old case to make one that would that fits the new board!

    CPU or 3080 upgrade?

    Posted: 19 Sep 2020 09:43 AM PDT

    Current system:

    Alienware R8

    i7 9700k oc to 4.9

    32GB DDR3200 (running at 2100 low cas)

    2080 Super

    Playing at 3440x1440 100hz

Got an Alienware because it was 30% cheaper at the time then buying my own parts.

Primary game is Escape from Tarkov 80%, 20% Romance of the Three Kingdoms and CoD.

Been playing with squads lately and we play watching each other's discord streams on second monitors to cut down on voice spam and friendly fire. This is a huge resource hog but vital. Tarkov is also notoriously cpu dependent because of all the object modelling and calculations.

With all this running, Max stable OC, and optimized graphics settings I get about 70-80fps and dips to 40fps when a lot is going on during firefights. Brutal to fight at low FPS in an already brutal game.

I've been debating if it's worthwhile to upgrade mobo cpu or better to get a 3080 (when more available). Cost is roughly the same because I'll be buying new case and PSU.

FPS spikes and 'jittery' feeling during games.

    Posted: 19 Sep 2020 05:14 AM PDT

    https://imgur.com/a/3PMU4d8

    https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/33148507

    Hello,

My device is a custom built 'gaming' PC that I built roughly two months ago from the ground up - all new parts, which are as follows; Windows 10 Pro, Crucial MX500 SSD, Ryzen 5 3600 cpu, GTX 1660 super gpu, 16GB of 3200mhz DDR4 Corsair Vengeance RAM, Corsair RM750x Power supply and an MSI mortar max motherboard all put into a CoolerMaster H500P Mesh (Case has 2 huge fans and a smaller exhaust fan so I think the problem is unlikely to be heat related) and an AOC 27G2 Monitor.

The problem is; Unstable FPS. What I mean is that my FPS is never 'smooth' regardless if it is 60fps or 200fps. Before this issue, I could run Spyro: Reignited Trilogy at max graphics running at 144fps (my monitors refresh rate) without ever seeing any drops - the framerate never dropped below 144fps nor did it feel 'jittery'. Now, my fps sits at around 120ish and drops down to <100 and even though 120fps is still a lot, it is not smooth because of how much it fluctuates. AC: Odyssey is another example and will run between 60-70fps on near max graphics but like the Spyro game, it will drop into the 50s with that same 'jittery' feeling as Spyro. CS:GO on the other hand, does not have that 'jittery' feeling to it, rather just not performing as it did - I used to get 300ish FPS on max graphics and now it sits at around 180. Skyrim used to give me around 80fps with enb and graphical mods, now it sits just below 60 fps. Lowering graphics has no impact at all on improving fps.

The problem only occurs during games and was not like this originally, I don't know how long this has been occuring as I've been too busy with school to keep track of it. The only things I have installed on my computer are; Microsoft Office applications, Steam and its games, discord, chrome. The computer was fine when I had these installed. Unfortunately, I don't know if it is a hardware or software issue causing this.

I have tried; disabling startup programs, updating windows 10 and drivers, overclocking, putting on high performance power plan, Nvidia control panel tweaks, disabling superfetch, uninstalling and then reinstalling drivers, running benchmarks to check for faults, disk cleanups, turning off resource hungry features from windows 10, several restarts, lowering in-game graphics, putting my pc into 'gaming mode' from the bios, disabling vsync, made sure everything was plugged in correctly, monitoring CPU and GPU usage and temps, made sure nothing was hogging up my PC, checking for malware. The only thing I haven't done is wipe my system and do a clean install of windows 10 which is what I'm gonna do next if nothing resolves it.

I tried playing games before updating or installing drivers just to be sure any new updates aren't responsible.

If I failed to list anything or need to further clarify something, please don't hesitate to let me know as any help is really appreciated. Thank you.

Should I upgrade my CPU as well?

    Posted: 19 Sep 2020 01:26 PM PDT

So I got a pre build PC a year ago (i5 3470 1050 ti 8gb) and decided to upgrade to a 1660 super so I can play at 1080p 60fps. I also need to buy a new psu, as my current is 300W and that's not enough for a 1660 super. But I was wondering, does the i5 3470 go well with this gpu?

First PC build in almost 10 years

    Posted: 19 Sep 2020 12:53 PM PDT

Hey all, I used to be big into computers and over the last few years life has kinda gotten in the way. Long story short, I'm starting back over from scratch and while I know more generally what I'm wanting to do and the direction I want to take this, I welcome any advice or constructive criticisms of the buildout in currently planning. I currently game on ps4 (not a hard core gamer but enjoy my free time!) and most of the games I would be looking at would be like snowrunner, gta, ace combat, things of the like. Ideally I would love a certain level of vr (I would port over my PSVR (and yes, it works thus far using it on my laptop as an alternative display)) but given what I'm planning I'm not sure how far that would actually work, so that's kind of a luxury if I can get it. I currently have the motherboard and the case already, and I'm not one to demand having the absolute newest, latest, and greatest, but if I would really do that much better with a different plan then I'm open to ideas. Thanks everyone in advance! https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Metalshadow93/saved/rmJwcf

i dont know if this is the right subreddit for this.. but i bought a pc from acer over a year ago. and till now i never ever opened it. not to clean it, not to look inside to see whats inside etc. i dont know anything about my own pc lol. but im super afraid that i break stuff when i only open the case... i dont know how to overcome this really stupid fear. i really wanna clean my pc to avoid overheating and stuff, but im super nervous when i only think about it. :/ i know its a bad question but yeah

Trying to build a budget PC, is the Ryzen 3 3200g good as a CPU?

I will be using the integrated graphics until I get enough money to get a dGPU but will the cpu bottleneck it is my concern.

Again I won't be getting a high end graphics card like a rtx 3070 or anything maybe something like a gtx 1050 or rx 580

Accidentally unplugged my HDMI while trying to do something else, tried to plug it back in but now my monitor is getting no signal

I was fiddling around with my headphone jack and didn't realize how short my HDMI cord is, so when I turned my case around, it came undone. I finish what I was doing snd plug it back in and at first everything loads up, I see the bios loading screen and but it's all red and static-y then it goes back to having no signal.
