    Simple Questions - August 21, 2020

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 05:11 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

    Can I combine b350 with r5 3600?

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 06:11 AM PDT

Stupid question but here we go. I currently own a pc with a b350 msi pc mate motherboard and ryzen 3 1200, and I was planning to upgrade to ryzen 5 3600.

•Is this possible without buying a new motherboard? •What kind of bios do I need, if so? •And is it even worth it?

Thank you for your time! Have a nice day!

Is it worth upgrading my processor for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 (MFS2020) and the next gen of games (e.g. PS5)?

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 05:53 AM PDT

    Title

    I currently run an

    Intel Core i5-4460 3.2 GHz Quad-Core Processor

    on a

Gigabyte GA-B85M-DS3H-A Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard

    With a

MSI GeForce GTX 970 4 GB Video Card

    I recently doubled my

    G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR3-1866 CL9 Memory

    From 8 to 16

I'd like to have something that can handle another gen at medium settings and it seems like my processor is my current bottleneck (only component not at the "recommended" level for MFS2020).

Also relevant is I don't anticipate going above 1080p for some time.

    What do y'all think?

Need a PC for a milking robot (not joking)

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 04:08 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

not sure if this is the right subreddit, but anyways...

So my brother asked me if I could build him a pc for a new milking robot which is needed. The contractor said it would cost about 800+ Euros (I live in Germany). So my brother asked me if I could build it for him. They also sent me a list of the needed parts for the PC but some requirements confuse me. Anyway, here's the needed parts list

    - Prozessor: INTEL Celeron-3865U – 2x 1.80 GHz

    - Arbeitsspeicher(RAM): 4 GB DDR4 – 2133 MHz

    - Grafikkarte(Graphics Card): Intel HD Graphics 520

    - Festplatte(Hard Drive): 250 GB SATA SSD Laufwerk

    - 2x HDMI, 1x Displayport (dual monitor compatible)

    - Wifi Module incl. integrated Antennas / 802.11 b/g/n

    - 2x COM-Ports (RS-232 + RS-422 / RS-485)

    - 2x Gigabit LAN (RJ45) supports WOL

    - SD Cardreader, 2x Audio (Micro & Line-out)

    - 2x USB 3.0 (front), 4x USB 2.0 (2x front)

    - Microsoft Windows 10 Pro 64- Bit

Not sure about the 2x HDMI, are there any cheap mainboards with dual HDMI? And what about the COM- Ports, I've never heard of them.

Your help would be much appreciated.

Edit: thanks for your help. I'll go with the contractor PC.

What storage configs do you guys run on your rigs? What are you planning on upgrading to?

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 06:48 AM PDT

Hey everyone, I've been racking my brain lately trying to figure out what type of storage solution I should go with that will get my PC through the next 5 years or so which has lead me to making this post. I currently use a mix of low capacity SATA SSDs and of course HDDs on a B450 motherboard, so no PCIe Gen 4 for me unless I wanna blow some cash on a new board. The Xbox Series X SSD has been my point of reference for my main drive (2.4 GB on the read/writes and 1TB in capacity) with no real preference towards SATA SSDs or HDDs for my secondary drive. Definitely wanting to avoid 5400 RPM HDDs. SATA SSDs with poor longevity are also a no-go.

My major use-case for storage drives is gaming. The latest Call Of Duty is reaching absurd levels of required space and other games aren't far behind, so high capacity is definitely a desire. However, I'd prefer to replace my HDDs with a much faster, high capacity SATA SSD and upgrade my 240GB SATA boot SSD to something like a WD Blue SN550 or something else along those lines. Except the problem with that is losing capacity in exchange for speed and the cost per GB isn't as great as good ol' slow HDDs. Not that I'd ever go back to an HDD as a boot drive though.

So yeah. I'm a bit lost on what config to go with and I guess I just need some inspiration and reassurance that can help me not second guess every solution I come up with at any particular price point. I don't really have a budget per se, but I don't really want to spend over $700 USD. Especially with the RTX 30 Series launching very soon. Upgrades people. Upgrades. Lmao thanks everyone in advance!

    Fingerprint on Thermal Paste

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 08:20 AM PDT

Bought a new Ryzen 5 3600, and accidentally touched the thermal paste on the stock cooler. Am I going to be fine installing this, or should I try to smooth it out with a clean credit card, or should I buy some thermal paste, wipe the paste off the fan and reapply?

    visual difference between form factors

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 09:25 AM PDT

Hey so obviously I dont know what I am doing, and I am thankful for you guys to help me out. So I purchased a HP Elite 800 off of newegg in order to start building it up later... but when I got it, I noticed that the model number on the back said it was a SFF. I contacted the seller and told him that the description online did not say SFF and I would like a refund. They seem to be accommodating my request and will refund. However, they also said that it was obviously SFF from the picture.....well, I dont know how to tell the difference between a regular tower and a SFF? Is it that all SFF computers have the optical drives running horizontally when standing up? Is there more to it than that? Do all full size towers have the optical drives running vertical when standing up?

I obviously do not know anything...but I am here to learn..and I realize that this is a totally stupid and noob question...but I just want to check. thanks

Hello, I'm using the NZXT H510 Elite, and I was just about to finish my setup when I came across this cable. It is sticking out on the front side of the case. Can't find it in the documentation, and can't find solutions on the internet as well. Can someone please tell me what is this for? Thank you so much!

I'm trying to get Windows 10 installed on my first build.

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 04:42 AM PDT

I've been using a mac up until now.

I downloaded the Win 10 .iso.

I formatted a 32GB usb stick to ExFat.

The usb with nothing but the Win 10 .iso is in my new build,

somehow I got the UEFI BIOS to get the usb to come up in the boot options as "usb disk 2.0 pmap".

I've since messed with the settings and now it looks like I'm at the the old BIOS.

    It says:

"Reboot and Select proper Boot device

or insert Boot Media press any key"

I've gotten past this screen by pressing F2.

    I'm back in UEFI BIOS.

    But I'm lost.

I think my mistake is the formatting of my USB drive, should it be Ex32 rather than ExFat?

How to configure a USB button to control Volume/hibernate?

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 07:10 AM PDT

Not sure where to ask this. Remove it if it doesn't belong here. I've tried googling and that's proven unsuccessful.

Im building (modding) one of those Arcade1up cabinets to be an emulation station with a Frankenstein PC i threw together with old parts.

The tower I'm using came from a prebuilt and I can't get into the power button wiring easily.

Anyways, i have an arcade zero delay button encoder. my plan is to use some of my extra buttons for volume control and a hibernate button.

Is there a straight forward way to run a script that can detect the button inputs to increase or decrease volume by 10% and a seperate button to toggle hibernate?

I've hardly ever written code but i can bust out some python in a pinch. Any advice on how to go about this?

    Edit: Windows 10

5700XT or 2060S? Also suggestions for first build.

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 09:04 AM PDT

    Hey fellas,

I'm about to build my first gaming PC. I've been saving up money for years and spent tons of time optimizing a ton of stuff. The final question I have is should I get the 5700XT or a 2060S. I'm going to be playing games like Valorant, Fortnite, Overwatch, Minecraft, Battlefield 5, Moder Warfare, maybe some tomb raider. Also, any other suggestions for the build?

HELP upgrading my pc (first time building a pc)

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 07:07 AM PDT

Hey all!! I wanted to upgrade my 5 years old pc, and in the process I decided to change almost all of the components aside from the hard drive and my ssd, because I want to maintain my files and OS.

    Those are the memory cards:

    1TB - 3.5 inch - SATA3 6Gb/s - 7200rpm

    250GB Samsung 850 EVO - 2.5 inch - SATA3

How can i check if they are compatible with the current motherboards? Also, will it bottleneck my pc if i will go with the soon to be released gpu's?

    Thanks a lot in advance!!

Can you help me replace my cooler?

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 09:12 AM PDT

    Hi Reddit

I realise it's a lot to ask but I just got a new pc and want to change my cooler. I know absolutely nothing about building pcs or the inner workings though.

My (relevant) pc specs are: Ryzen 5 3600 Gtx 2070 B450M Gigabyte DS3H

I currently have a wraith stealth CPU cooler and have bought a wraith prism cooler.

I'd be really really grateful if one of you could write me a dummy's guide to replacing the stealth cooler with the prism.

I have a silver I can give to the winner!

    RAM compatibility with Ryzen 3200G

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 01:29 PM PDT

Hey, I'm intending to buy a 3200G, and on the page of mobo manufacturers I see they list all Ram compatibles for Raven Ridge, Pinnacle Ridge and Summit Ridge. In the case of the 3200G the core name is Picasso, not any of the former, so should I check Ram compatibility somehow, or any Ram stick would work?

    thanks

PC for gaming, VR and 3D software

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 06:08 AM PDT

I'm upgrading my PC with a new motherboard, CPU, CPU cooler, GPU and RAM. All the other parts are from my current build and unless I have to I would like to not upgrade them.

I use my computer for gaming, VR gaming with a Rift S and 3D modeling/rendering.

I don't really play that many competetive games, mostly strategy, simulator and RPG's so stuff like high refresh rate isn't that important to me (hence why I'm not really that keen on upgrading my old monitor)

I use 3Ds Max for modeling and Vray for rendering, but once I'm finished with my 3D bachelor I'm likely going to switch to Blender. I also use some other 3D programs and Unity/Unreal. My main reason for getting the i9 over i7 is rendertimes.

It would be nice to be able to OC, but not really a must as I'm confident this build should meet my demands for a few years atleast.

I will be bying these parts in Norway so don't worry too much about the amazon price. I have found these parts based on price here and what is available.

My main concerns are as follows:

    • Will my new parts fit in my current case?
    • Will my current power supply be sufficient?
    • Anything else that is incompatible?
    • Is there a reason to get the i9-9900K instead of i9-9900KF when using a dedicated GPU? (the KF is cheaper here in Norway)
    • Will the CPU cooler be sufficient?

I also would appreciate any other tips or thoughts you have on my build

    Hello,

Was excited to just finish my first build. Once I was done I plugged it in and fired it up. Everything looked fine at first (lights on motherboard and graphics card along with fans running). About a minute later the whole thing shut down. I get get the lights to flicker but nothing more since. I have a feeling I don't have enough wattage in the PSU (450) but looking for any advice for where else I should be looking to diagnose the issue.

What is the ideal screen size for a dual 4k monitor setup for work?

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 06:05 AM PDT

Are dual 27-inch ones or 32-inch ones better?

Edited: I have a dual 27-inch 4K setup and it is good. I also have a single 32-inch 4K at work and it's quite big at first but it's fine now. Just don't know whether dual 32-inch is better in terms of working feeling. I guess something like 30 inches is cool but they don't make them though.

Can a video card kill a motherboard?

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 10:42 AM PDT

Long story short, built a computer for my dad back in April. Was working perfectly fine. A month back, my dad upgraded the video card to a brand new Asus 1660 Super. Went to turn it on -- nothing. No fans, lights, beeps, nada. Tested the PSU on another computer and no issue.

Figured it was the motherboard - Got it back from RMA today.... plugged everything back in... and nothing. No fans, lights, beeps.

Took the video card out - same thing. Completely dead.

I'm about ready to throw the whole thing out and get a pre-built. I don't know why it's not working at all.
