    Simple Questions - August 20, 2020

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 05:09 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

    Modular cables are NOT universal!

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 10:26 PM PDT

So this is probably old knowledge for a lot of you, but for me it was a surprise.

Even though the 6 pin molex plug going to your PSU are all identical, their pinout is NOT.

I thought my old OCZ 600W was defective, because none of the drives worked. They worked perfectly with my 430W Corsair. After a while I realized that the OCZ had a diagram over pin outs, and it didn't match the plug. After digging a bit, I found some other modular cables, and the colors of the wires matched the pinout - drives have power again.

This is probably the stupidest thing I've seen in modern computers. Maybe something has changed more recently, but in any case - do check the wiring, you could potentially fry your component if you replace the PSU and leave your old, neatly organized cables (which kinda would be the intention of it being modular).

I've been happy with Corsairs PSU's, so I'm sticking to one brand from now on.

    (Website)Guide: Step1) Logicalincrements. Step2) Skinflint. Step3) pcpartpicker. Step4) reddit.

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 05:56 AM PDT

Pcpartpicker is recommended in every post. I am surprised that the following 2 Websites are almost never recommended:

    1. https://www.logicalincrements.com/is hidden in the r/buildapc wiki. It gives ideas about which parts could fit into a certain budget and which hardware may be needed for different kinds of performances in certain games. Therefore it may help all the people asking for 350/600/1000$ builds or 60fps 1440p build.
DISCLAIMER: dont copy these lists. They are NOT up to date. Dont use it as your only source of information! Proceed with step 2.
    2. https://skinflint.co.uk/
      A) it shows you the cheapest prices & retailers in europe (GER, AUT, UK, PL), not like pcpartpicker showing you old prices.
      B) it has a much more in depth filtering system than pcpartpicker. This enables you to get exactly what you want and facilitates self education (if you dont know what a certain filter option means, you can google it to find out if it is important for you). Therefore it is also very helpful for people from outside of europe.
    3. & 4.: Afterwards you may use pcpartpicker as a final check of compatibility and formatting and then reddit for final questions & advise.

Buyer Beware: New PC Parts sold on Amazon might not have warranty coverage in the US

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 12:40 PM PDT

I purchased a Samsung EVO 970 NVMe SSD last year and I started the process of RMA with Samsung in the US. According the to the serial number I provided from a fresh SSD I purchased on Amazon Services, Inc. in December 2019, the item was intended for sale in a different country and was sold in the US. Samsung USA told me they cannot provide warranty coverage since the item was not intended for sale in the US.

I filed a warranty claim issue with Amazon since it violates state consumer laws, but just as head up to anyone expecting that parts sold on Amazon are legit.

    Build Finally Complete!

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 11:19 AM PDT

    Hey people!

I am happy to say that I've recently completed my first PC build! I'm 15 and after saving up a few years' worths of birthday and Christmas money (big fam = big money) and also getting excellent grades in school, my mom let me get these parts. Let me tell you, it was a blast building it! I don't really like RGB either so there is only a minuscule amount of it present in my build.

GPU just went up in smoke. Looking for advice on a replacement.

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 09:06 AM PDT

My venerable GTX 950 started smoking after I cleaned and lubricated the fans :/

My PC specs (bought in 2016):

    CPU: i5 4690 MB: Gigabyte GA-B85M-D3H-A RAM: 2x8GB 1600MHz PSU: Antec VP-PC 500W

I'm considering the GTX 1650 super or 1660 as replacements. I'm not looking for some big upgrade, just a replacement that's within the price range of what I paid for my old GTX 950. I mostly use my pc to game in 1080p and do some Blender stuff.

1650 is basically the same price as my old card and my first choice, but I'd go for a 1660, except I don't know if my PSU and CPU can handle it?

I'm not really that up-to-date with graphics cards, so if there are better choices, please tell me. I picked nvidia cards, because I don't know a thing about ATI cards :P

An additional question: Like it says in the title, my GPU went up in smoke. After pressing the power button, the fans twitched for a sec, the PC didn't start, but the blue light next to the button remained lit. The GPU started smoking after I disconnecting the power and tried to turn the PC on a few more times. Everything seems fine now that I've removed it, but could the rest of my system be damaged in some way? Is there a way to test for that?

The funny thing is that I didn't even manage to lubricate the damn fan, because windforce fans don't have that removable rubber cap on top :/

How much better is an NVME SSD compared to an 860 EVO sata SSD?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 10:42 AM PDT

I'll just be using the computer for gaming and school work. I already own an 860 EVO 1tb, but I have the money to get a better NVME SSD like the WD SN750. Is it worth upgrading?

RTX 2070 SUPER vs. RTX 2080 SUPER

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 12:13 PM PDT

    Hi there,

Maybe this is a silly question, but I need to choose between these 2 options:

    This RTX 2080 SUPER:

    https://www.asus.com/Graphics-Cards/DUAL-RTX2080S-O8G-EVO/

    and this RTX 2070 SUPER:

    https://www.gigabyte.com/Graphics-Card/GV-N207SGAMING-OC-8GD-rev-10-11#kf

The RTX 2080 SUPER is almost a 30% more expensive than the 2070 super (in my country), so my question is... Is it worth (in terms of performance) or I'm just wasting my money?

Let me know your thoughts about those 2 cards :)

    Regards,

    FF

    Motherboard not fitting in case?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 12:55 PM PDT

I have the MSI B450 Gaming Plus MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard and the NZXT H510 ATX Mid Tower Case. I have been trying to put my motherboard into my case. It can get into the case fine but the places where you put in the screws isn't lining up. I tried to force it into the right spot but it won't move that far. I believe that my motherboard is the correct size for my case so I don't know why it doesn't line up. Any help would be appreciated.

Is my Ryzen 5 3600 too hot or Core Temp is wrong ?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 01:47 PM PDT

I bought and built my pc today and went to check the temps with Core Temp. With firefox and discord open my CPU was supposedly around 60°C (which seems 20°C too high) but after 2h30 using my pc I reboot and check the temp given by the bios (MSI B450 Gaming Max) which is 43°C. To test Core Temp more I added playing BotW on Cemu (reached 47% usage) and got 82°C on startup then around 70°C in game, then Witcher 3 didn't use a lot but was around the same temps.

I don't know which one I should trust (my bet is on the bios since Core Temp only shows temp for one core) but should I be worried ?

Also when I put on the CPU cooler (the one given with the CPU) I only managed to screw in 3 out of the 4 screws (the last one was too high) but it seemed that the cooler was on the CPU. I may also have damaged the pre-applied paste by removing the cooler because the screws were not aligned properly. What should I do about it ?

Edit : task manager shows that my CPU is overclocked (by default) at 4GHz, and Core Temp that core frequency varies between 3.6 and 4.2 GHz (changes every 2 seconds)

Horrible FPS on Minecraft with brand new PC (RX 5600 XT, Ryzen 7 2700)

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 08:20 AM PDT

So a few days ago I built my first pc for around $800 and I started yo minecraft only to get ~150 fps with 8 chunks of render distance (1080p) and if I set the chunks to 32 I get ~20 fps not to mention some very bad stuttering which is ridiculous considering my old i5 6400, gt 730 pc got over 50 fps with max render distance. All other games run fine except for a fair share of stuttering. Any suggestions on what I should do?

My decade-old Ship of Theseus desktop has had almost every component replaced, and it's time for a new case now. I'm looking for one with smooth geometry on the outside (easier to clean), designed to keep the inside free of dust too. May I have recommendations for how to look, please?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 08:32 AM PDT

    PSU - Corsair GS700

    Graphics card - Radeon RX460

    Motherboard - ASUS Prime B350M-A

    CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 1500X

For compatibility, do I need to keep any other components in mind? Are there any unusual issues I should expect when doing the swap?

    Thank you!

I need a HDMI splitter/switch for my PC, where can I get one?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 12:47 PM PDT

Like the title says, I need a switch because I don't like removing hdmi cords from my graphics card port, as it gets more loose every time I do so. So far, all I've found is HDMI splitters/switches for TVs. I need the input to be the graphics card, and the outputs to be whatever monitor or TV is being used. Where can I find one of these? Thanks in advance!

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 12:30 PM PDT

Viewsonic or Dell? I know these aren't top of the line. I'm looking for 1440p for about this price to stay within budget. Looking for POVs on the two listed above. Thoughts?

Advice on upgrading PC for streaming, recording and editing

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 12:26 PM PDT

Hello, as the title of the post says I'm considering upgrading my PC as I've begun to dabble in the world of streaming and recording game clips (with the intention of editing and uploading them to YT and the like).

Unfortunately I've noticed that the quality of my recordings and sometimes my streams are a bit lacking: occasionally suffering frame rate drops (particularly when recording) and stutters. I mostly play Escape From Tarkov currently which is quite a poorly optimised game which I'm sure doesn't help but I can't help but wonder if my hardware is letting me down a bit.

Is my current PC up to standard for my needs or should I be looking to upgrade?

    Current specs:

    -Asus z370p motherboard

    -Intel i5 8600k processor

    -GTX 1080 TI

    -16gb 2133mhz Corsair ram

    -128gb ssd + 1tb hdd

Any advice or constructive input is appreciated!

    Review my gaming build plz

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 07:52 AM PDT

Hi all - I've been super hype about Cyberpunk 2077 upcoming, and my dream for this machine is to run it at max settings on release day. I'm extremely fortunate to have the budget to build something like this, but have only a very little experience with building PCs.

Game's not released yet so there are no official required specs, but I *think* after some research the below should work well - and for plenty of other games. Also looking for confirmation from more experienced folk on this subreddit regarding compatibility. In general it will be used mostly for gaming, and a bit of programming from home (during these weird times).

Not planning on overclocking in the interest of keeping things simpler for my first build.

PC randomly shutting off and wont turn on?

My PC I built is around 6 months old; all new parts. Enabled xmp last week and put my ram to the supported 3200mhz. All has been fine until today my PC is randomly shutting off and now wont turn on for like 3-4 minutes before turning on for what could be 10 mins or 1 hour before shutting off again.
