Building multiple gaming PC´s at various prices

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 02:27 AM PDT

    Hello,

I was currently asked by multiple members of my family to build PCs for their kids. The main goal of the PC is, in their words, "to be able to play some games and do some school stuff". It was a few years back since I built my rig and I didn´t follow the newest tech updates.

Can you please help me and correct my builds if there are some errors or you have some ideas to improve things?

    PC 1:

My uncle asked me to build a PC for his kid at around 350€. His kid is 9 and wants to play Minecraft and Fortnite. They will not overclock the PC.

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 1200 - 70€
    GPU: AMD RX 550 4GB - 80€
    MB: ASUS PRIME A320M - 50€
    RAM: Patriot 2666 MHz 8GB (1x8GB) - 30€
    PSU: SILENTIUMPC 350W - 30€
    CASE: ZALMAN T7 - 30€
    SSD: Patriot 120GB - 20€
    HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB - 40€

    Price: 350€

This PC allows him to play most games fluently (depending on settings) at 30+FPS. My main issue is the GPU. It seems like the RX 550 4GB is just not that great but RX 560 is at a 120€ price point and not currently available in my country and RX 570 is at 150€ which is double the price of RX 550.

I was wondering if it weren´t better to buy 3200G and avoid buying GPU for now but they don´t want an integrated GPU. They do not want to buy used items too.

    PC 2:

The same uncle wants me to build a PC for his 15-year-old kid who wants to play Call of Duty: Warzone, CS:GO, GTA 5 and similar games. The price range of this PC is 500€.

    CPU: Intel i3-9100F - 80€
    GPU: AMD 570 8GB - 150€
    MB: MSI 310M - 50€
    RAM: Patriot 2666 MHz 16GB (2x8GB) - 60€
    PSU: SILENTIUMPC 450W - 40€
    CASE: ZALMAN R2 BLACK - 40€
    SSD: Patriot 240GB - 30€
    HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB - 40€
PSU FAN: Silentumpc Spartan 4 Max - 20€

    Price: 510€

I think that RX 570 8GB is quite alright at this price point. I would much rather buy 1650 S but that card is 50€ pricier at around 200€.

When it comes to CPU, I do not know anything else that might fit into this setup. According to cpu.userbenchmark, the 9100F is the best option at this price point, compared to Ryzen 5 1600 or Ryzen 3 3200G.

    PC 3:

My second uncle wants me to build a PC for his 17-year-old son. He wants to play games like Horizon Zero Dawn, Red Dead Redemption 2, Assassin´s Creed: Valhalla, and so on. He wants to stream and edit his videos from time to time. His budget is around 700€.

    CPU: Intel i5-9400F - 140€
    GPU: GTX 1660S 6GB - 230€
    MB: ASROCK B365M PRO4-F - 70€
    RAM: Patriot 2666 MHz 16GB (2x8GB) - 60€
    PSU: Cougar VTE500 - 50€
    CASE: ZALMAN R2 BLACK - 40€
    SSD: Patriot 480GB - 50€
    HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB - 40€
PSU FAN: Silentumpc Spartan 4 Max - 20€

    Price: 700€

I think there isn´t much to talk about when it comes to the GPU.

The CPU, on the other hand, is a different story. 10400F is just 10€ more, Ryzen 5 3600 sits at around 190€, which is 50€ more than 9400F. The Ryzen 5 2600 is the same price as 9400F, 140€.

    Thank you very much, guys.

    shoutout to the scythe support

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 12:33 PM PDT

    please remove, if not allowed.

I bought a scythe kama cross in 2013 to cool my i5-3470. This problem came back and i could not revive the pc. I tossed CPU and MoBo and bought a ryzen5 2600 with the boxed cooler.

Then i read somewhere, that for the newer scythe kama cross 2 and 3 there are official kits to make them am4 compatible. I contacted support and they told me it would work but i needed the AMD spring clip since i was using the intel push-pins. I did not have that since i never expected to use that cooler on another cpu. For 4€ including shipping they send me the part which makes my old kama cross usable on the new ryzen.

sold one cooler less but one customer for live.

Basic build for flight sim 2020

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 07:15 AM PDT

I'm really not sure where to start on this as I am a console gamer however I really want to run this game and it might be what breaks me into the PC world. I know computers well, I've just always gotten by with my now aged laptop.

My basic goal is for a build that will run this great without a lot of other purpose right now. So I kind of want to hit whatever the minimum budget (edit: for now I'll call it a loose $1k budget) for this simulator would be, but with parts that leave an easy future upgrade path.

    Thanks!

    RAM sticks - 8×2 > 16×1

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 11:36 AM PDT

I've read everywhere that it is better to have 8×2GB memory than a 16×1GB.

I wanted to ask - does it make that much of a difference or is it just a preference?

How much do I really need to spend?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 09:02 AM PDT

I've done masters-level HPC courses and run fancy CUDA-accelerated code every day, so everyone assumes I know all about GPUs while I just sit and nod and say "ooh yeah, that's fast" or whatever. But I'm living a lie. Don't get me wrong, I know what all the parts do, but I have literally no opinion on the latest Intel chipset or whatever.

See, I've only ever owned prebuilt mid-range laptops. We had a Family Computer for a while, but it was beige and ran Windows 2000. I'm not a heavy gamer, and I've never been convinced I'm sufficiently handy to put all the bits together myself, so I've never done my research before. My purchasing decisions went as far as "i5 sounds better than i3 and 8GB sounds better than 4GB..."

But now I have a thesis to write, so here I am!

I want to build myself a computer. It sounds fun, and I actually have money now. Maybe I'll even learn something.

I looked at the Logical Increments recommended builds as a starting point, but I fell at the first hurdle: I have no idea what tier I should be looking at.

I pretty much just want to play the latest batch of Paradox games (CK3, Cities Skylines, etc.) and the old Valve titles (which probably won't be an issue). It seems like anything from Fair up hits the recommended specs for what I want to do, but I don't want to end up with something underpowered when I inevitably end up getting really into the latest zoo-building game.

I'm also a Linux user, generally, but it seems silly to build a fancy PC and then not even be able to play most games on it, so I'd probably be looking to dual-boot. I've been raised on the doctrine that Intel+Nvidia is the One True Duo when it comes to Linux, but I'm not convinced that's true any more. At any rate, Logical Increments don't recommend any Intel CPUs, and I assume there's a reason for that, but please do let me know if you have thoughts.

I wouldn't be too sad about any budget under £1000 (GBP), but I don't want to squander my money on bragging rights when half the transistors are just sat there unused.

So the choice roughly comes down to one of these three. The point is primarily to figure out what sort of level I want to pitch myself at: I'm happy to swap out any of the parts, but that's where I'll need more of your help. I'm also happy to extend my search outside this range, if you think these are all overkill, or too embarrassingly weak to even be seen with.

    Fair

    • GPU: GTX 1650S
    • CPU: Ryzen 3 3300X
    • HSF: Gammaxx 400
    • Mobo: MSI B450 Gaming Plus Max
    • RAM: 8GiB DDR4
    • HDD: 1TiB
    • SSD: 240GiB
    • PSU: SeaSonic 550W (B)
    • Case: Focus G

    Good

    As Fair, except:

    • GPU: GTX 1660S
    • CPU: Ryzen 5 3600
    • Case: Antec P8

    Total cost: £729

    Very Good

    As Good, exept:

    • GPU: GTX 1660 Ti
    • PSU: SeaSonic 650W (B)

    Total cost: £804

    Cheers!

Will I mess up my pc if I put it on a ground with carpet

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 03:02 PM PDT

I'm doing my first build right now and I'm trying to decide on a desk. I'm thinking a 48-50 inch and my room is really small so I can't go over that. At some point after my build I want to upgrade to a second monitor and I think I can because I got the 1660 super and from what I know it can power two monitors. I have a carpeted floor so I don't know if putting my case on the ground would work and I really don't want to accidentally fry one of the parts doing that. I also know that you can get carts to put them on but most of those are made out of metal and I think the static would go through the metal, I hope I don't sound dumb thinking that but if I am then please call me out. What can I do if I'm not wrong?

What kind of mobo would you guys recommend for a Ryzen 3600?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 10:39 AM PDT

B450? B550? X570? I'm gonna be doing a new build in the next 1-2 months and I know that some B450s don't support Ryzen 3rd Gen out of the box, so I am leaning towards 550 or X570. I'm gonna be gaming and not using a NVME drive, if that makes a difference.

Another question - I assume I should wait for the 3000 series comes out, see if the price of the 2060 super drops a bit (and see if it comes back in stock at places like microcenter)?

So I should wait until like September to upgrade. Sorry, talking to myself at the end of this post.

Help with determining an upgrade path for my 2017 PC

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 10:29 AM PDT

Hi folks. I'm looking for a final round of upgrades to get the most life out of my first build from 2017. I am looking to pick up a new monitor soon as well as a graphics card but am worried about processor bottleneck.

I am a designer/video editor and would like to get at least 1440p for work, but am also chasing high refresh rates for gaming. Is 1440p and above-60fps gaming realistic with just a GPU upgrade, or should I just start from scratch once 3000 series drops?

    Relevant Specs:

    CPU: i5 7600k

    Mobo: ASROCK B250M pro4

    RAM: Corsair 2x16gb @2400

Building in an In-Win Chopin, and need help with CPU/Motherboard pairing to keep absolute bang for buck

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 01:54 PM PDT

My original thought was to get an H310 chipset and a pentium g5400 and call it a day, before realizing I can probably squeeze an i3 in there for not too much more, so, I need help. Can anybody please verify if this motherboard/CPU combo (below) will work out of the box without any BIOS flash or anything of that sort.

CPU/Motherboard I need help verifying if it will work out of the box:

    CPU: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/YqKhP6/intel-core-i3-8100-36ghz-4-core-processor-bx80684i38100

    Motherboard:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/product/Lqvbt6/asus-prime-h310i-plus-r20csm-mini-itx-lga1151-motherboard-h310i-plus-r20csm

And I am aware that the i3 9100 can be found for cheaper and has better performance, but I already know an h310 chipset and a 9th gen chip will not work out of the box. I want out of the box being able to boot to bios and be done with it. Also, my budget is too tight to afford Ryzen chips, because mini itx Ryzen boards can cost $30-100 (usd) more than a current itx intel board may cost. My budget is simply too tight.

Thank you everyone who helps, it is greatly appreciated!!

What's the best motherboard for my first build?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 01:23 PM PDT

I am going to build my first pc, to last me for a long time, and I want to get the most of my 1500€ budget. Right now those are my parts, but I haven't decided yet on what motherboard to buy.

    • CPU: Ryzen 7 3700x
    • GPU: RTX 2070 Super
    • Ram: G.Skill Ripjaws V 16GB (8x2)
    • Case: NZTX H510 Elite ATX
    • SSD: 1 tb m.2 nand 2280
    • PSU: Seasonic S12III 650W
    • Motherboard: ??? ( ± 120€)

I know that the case is expensive, but my father is going to buy for me, but other than that, if I am doing any kind of mistake, I would like to know.

    H210i, x570i aorus, ll120 vs Aer rgb 2

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 03:15 PM PDT

I have the h210i which comes with the smart device v2. I also have the x570i aorus. I like the ll120 fans a lot more as they look better imo but how can I use them without the commander pro and stuff like them devices as they're very expensive. I know the Aer rgb 2 plugs right into the smart device but how can I use the ll120 if I was to get them. Would a fan splitter work or not because I'm pretty use there's only one port for the fans on the board unless I can use the aio one which I don't know do I can

Does this look like a decent build?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 11:22 AM PDT

My apartment was struck by lightning which nuked my previous PC. Haven't kept up with newer parts, since I built my old one in 2016. I'm looking for something VR-capable, and that will get close to 144 frames at 1080p on most games, such as Valorant, GTA, PUBG etc. If there are parts missing, I already have those.

I intend to sell the 500w but is it still functional for the second user given that it's going to be installed for the right build?

    Upgrade from i5 2550K CPU?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 02:42 PM PDT

I've just bumped up my GPU (Radeon RX 580) from a rather ancient GTX 450.

I've had an i5 2550K (3.4Ghz) CPU since April 2012. I'll be looking at an i5 6500 or 7500. I do a bit of CAD at home, and don't play AAA games, mostly indies.

I was wondering what advantages there are to upgrading it (apart from power consumption), or if I should just leave it if it's fine?
